Book Description

This book is designed to help biologists who must create their own illustrations and artists who are confronted with unfamiliar biological subjects. The author, an experienced biological illustrator, gives practical instructions and advice on the consideration of size and of printing processes, choice of materials, methods for saving time and labor, drawing techniques, lettering methods, and mounting and packing the finished illustrations. She explains how to produce clear and attractive charts, graphs, and maps, so essential to science publications. Though this primer does not cover photographic techniques, it does include advice on retouching, cropping, and mounting photographs and on using photographs of biological subjects as aids in drawing. This second edition is updated to reflect the many technological changes in art materials and printing processes that have occurred since the book's first publication, and it includes an entirely new chapter on planning, designing, and mounting the poster presentations that have become an essential part of conferences held by scientific societies. Also included are the requirements and conventions peculiar to biological illustration and a bibliography of useful reference works.

This is a great place to begin!.......2000-03-28

With the internet, lots of people are beginning to design web pages... with no sense of art or style at all. Likewise for some people who use computers for illustrations. This handbook is indeed where everyone should begin if they're going to illustrate. It doesn't say much about computers, but it does show how to make professional illustrations using pre-computer tools -- which still set the standards. It's a most enjoyable book.

A useful book........2005-02-25

Whenever I see a book which claims to be an "encyclopaedia" of a particular subject, I expect it to be laid out in encyclopaedic form - i.e. with every word of relevance to that subject listed and then fully described in alphabetical order. Why? Because, by definition, that is how an encyclopaedia is laid out. Similarly, when I see a book which claims to be a "complete" guide to whatever, I do not expect to find large sections of the subject matter missing. Thankfully, in this case, the book is a fairly complete guide to the overall subject of Nature Photography.

This includes a section on high speed photography with inclusion of some outstanding examples of birds, butterflies and insects all in mid flight, photographed by that world-famous exponent of this particular aspect of photography - Stephen Dalton. Similarly, there is also a section on underwater photography - although, I did find the photographs here to be rather bland, uninspiring and some were even out-of-focus. The same is also true of a number of other photographs throughout the book - although, if those poor photographs can be ignored, there are still many valuable lessons to be learned from this work.

Happy Halloween, Biscuit!.......2006-10-24

This was a bad impulse purchase. I scanned it to make sure the pictures weren't scary, but I didn't read it from cover to cover. As endearing as some may find these characters to be, this story annoys me. Reading all the, "Woof's" gets old after the first sitting, and the story is just too sappy for me.

In addition, I don't like Halloween books that show children trick-or-treating alone. I know this is nitpicking, but I don't want my child getting the idea that wandering the streets alone at night is a safe thing to do. On the plus side, this is a lift-the-flap book, and little ones enjoy the hide-and-seek qualities these kinds of books offer.

There are so many wonderful Halloween books today, this isn't one of them.

My 2 year old loves all the biscuit books! This is the newest addition to her collection, and it is a favorite already!

Best one yet!.......2000-09-02

My 7 year old daughter and I collect the Biscuit books, and this is the best one yet! The lift flaps are wonderful! Kids can get really involved in the book by guessing what is coming next. This is a great book for my daughter's age, since she can read it herself. Younger children will also love it, espcially lifting the flaps on the pages. I work with toddlers and plan on using this book with them when we start talking about Halloween.

This book will have parents and children laughing out loud, until the last page.

Amelia Bedelia is a great series for younger kids and a good way to teach them to read. It also helps them to understand two ways of looking at things.

My son enjoys the repetition of the story. On each page the scientist attempts to assemble the pieces in the box. He has many failures before he finally succeeds. The illustrations by Warren Linn really makes the book funny.

Aside from the fact that my uncle illustrated this book (go Uncle Warren!) How could you not love this book? It's a great children's story with beautiful, modern and colorful illustrations.

First I start with what I did like in the book and that was the decorations,wether it was for keepsakes or temperarely projects,they are nice and fun to do.The recepies however were not halloween minded enough to my liking and of the 18 recepies there was only 1 with picture.Surely as this is a book "full" of ideas they could have shared more ideas on how to present the food.Plenty of pictures though of the costumes wich I found very childish.Granted,they are childrens costumes but they lacked imaganation I thought.It's a shame that there aren't any costumeideas for adults in the book.There's a great book on my bookshelf about decorating your house for halloween and that is 'Halloween decorating'by Arts & Crafts for Home Decorating.Its less childish than Handmade Halloween.ISBN 0-86573-415-1.It was rewarded with the Benjamin Franklin Award and is clearly the best book on Halloween crafts I have yet seen.
