Anyone who acts the flaneur in David Hockney's current touring exhibition DAVID HOCKNEY: PORTRAITS cannot help but encounter the many portraits and influences of Peter Schlesinger, one of Hockney's clan of admirers and students. Hockney's portraits of Schlesinger show a handsome young man with stylish dignity and a most memorable presence. All that is to say re-reading Peter Scheslinger's 'Checkered Past: A Visual Diary Of The 60's And 70's' adds credibility to the observational skills he possessed and which were nurtured by his association with Hockney.
Schlesinger was invited by Hockney to London's Slade School of Art in 1968 at a youthful age 20. Hockney favored him and imbedded him in Hockney's wide circle of acquaintances and friends living and visiting in the Notting Hill district in London. Artists of every kind, from painters and sculptors to actors, musicians, dancers, photographers, interior designers, and yes, even the hoity toity of British society were gathered around the two. Schlesinger, himself a painter and sculptor, was wise enough to see the importance of the documentation of this pregnant artistic period and kept his camera in hand, capturing this inimitable time - the 1960s and 1970s.
Schlesinger was able to address his 'portraits' in the natural surroundings of his 'models', both in England and on the European Continent. The results are casual portraits of such luminaries as Hockney himself, W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Paloma Picasso, Twiggy, Robert Mapplethorpe, Yves Saint Laurent, Manolo Blahnik, Celia Birtwell, and Rudolf Nureyev, self portraits - many of these photographs were used by Hockney as sketch ideas for his drawings and paintings.
This entertaining and art history important book contains not only fine images, but also boasts comments from Schlesinger discreetly placed throughout the book, adding to the mood of that particular time during which the photographs were made. The controversial shoe designer Manolo Blahnik opens the volume with an appropriately campy forward, which sets a fine mood for what is to come. Once thought to be merely another photomontage of the 60s and 70s, Hockney's current exhibition throws new light and importance to Peter Schlesinger's book and his artistic career. Can't leave this one on the coffee table.......2006-03-04
I ordered this thinking it was a fun coffee table book about fashion from the 60s and 70s, as the cover would have you believe. The photos were boring & mostly of unrecognizable people. Plus, it contained a full frontal male nude shot, which made it too X-rated for me to leave out on the coffee table. I can't have my mother looking at this book! Thumbs down.

This book is a feast for for the eyes . The photographs are delicious in that cherry pie, sweet tart sort of way... overwhelming in their beauty and composition. The text is very matter of fact, warm and totally involving. My only complaint is that I wish there hundreds more photos to look at! This is an excellent book for everyone who has dreamed of the glam life!

Checkered Past is an intriguing art book which should appeal to a wide audience. Peter Schlesinger was a prolific amateur photographer in the late Sixties and early Seventies, snapping his interesting friends. He put his vast collection of photos in his beautifully bound Wallace Heaton books. Now he has put them in his book Checkered Past. Most of his subjects were and still are famous from the rarified worlds of the British aristocracy, Society, the Art World, Fashion and Showbusiness. But, what is really fascinating about this glossy book is how Schlesinger has managed to take such impromptu snaps of well known people, going about their daily business whether it be in an art studio or at home. It really is an insider's glimpse of lifestyles which makes the reader feel an active participant. Peter also wrote the amusing text and his old friend Manolo Blahnik, the international shoe designer supplied the forward. Ogle David Hockney, Paloma Picasso, and larger than life personlities like a younger Bianca Jagger. It helps if you actually knew Peter's subjects, but it doesn't matter if you haven't met any of them personally. Checkered Past is a fascinating sign of the times and it makes a good coffee table book, too!

Having spent some time in London during the late 60's, I can honestly say that this
interesting and beautiful work succeeds quite impressively in bringing alive a sense
of time, place, and especially people...very unique and out of the ordinary people.
A book worthy of reading, browsing through often, and sharing with friends.

A moving testimony to Florida prison conditions.......2004-05-20
The author has been incarcerated in Florida for most of his life, starting at age eleven. His book is well worth the read, particularly for those who want a better understanding of such matters in Florida.
He recounts his life, both committing crimes and incarcerated, as well as his many escapes. For a person who has been incarcerated most of his life, he is a good writer and gives very worthwhile descriptions of Florida "justice": Way too many law enforcement officers lie about him, causing him to have even less respect for our quite flawed criminal justice system.
He also recounts the injustices that others have suffered in Florida's "correctional" institutions.
And after he had been arrested for felony murder along with Frank Valdez, the death row inmate who was murdered by the prison guards in the late 1990s, he has a very powerful conversion experience to Christianity.

Dorkin Hits His Stride...........2002-07-10
After reading the AWFUL Hectic Planet: Dim Future, I was less than thrilled that I had purchased all the volumes of Dorkin's Sci-Fi satire. The book was derivative, lifeless, and unfunny. I started reading Checkered Past with a sense of dread....
Well, I needn't have worried, because Dorkin obviously found his voice after those initial issues. This book is touching, funny, and well-done all around.
In Book Two, we follow the crew of The Jersey devil as they try to get off of the planet they're stuck on, see the next phase of the disastrous relationship between Halby and the lovely/crazy Elsie, watch Ron make a Hockey comeback, meet the hilarious "Fibby", and go for a 36-Hour shopping spree in the biggest supermarket EVER. The jokes all hit the mark, and despite the Sci-Fi trappings, Halby and Elsie's doomed love is really Heart-rending to watch. What guy couldn't identify with Halby...? My only beef is that Evan seems to have forgotten about the T.A.N.C..........(Also, be on the lookout for a cameo by the great Cowboy Wally!)
