Read it for David Weitzman..........2006-01-03
I knew the story of Rama and Sita, and wanted to know how David Weitzman (of the 'Brown Paper School book' series) treated it. I should say it was good. Though the story is the same, this is the Javanese version of the same story of Rama and Sita, and obviously is a bit different in places, from the scriptures available in India, where the original mythological legend is based on.
Weitzman has a knack for making it seem friendly and appealing to children and in this book he uses his own artistic projection, while keeping the basic form of the art intact. The figurines in the book resemble the puppets used in ancient Javanese version of the art of puppetry, marked by their long-limbed figurines. David makes these shadow forms glitter, with his usage of gold color.
Worth reading for kids interested in legendary mythologies.
A delightful book with spellbinding illustrations.......2004-04-30
The Ramayana, as told in Javanese shadow plays, is a tale for all ages. Weitzman creates magical images in color and gold inks based on the shadow puppets. These, by themselves, would be enough to recommend the book, but the language of the retelling of this classic tale is enough to have my six year old and nine year old both coming back again and again. We're buying a second copy for when the first one wears out.
Book Description
Since the first editions of these books were published there have been many significant advances in the field of surface coatings. These second editions are written at a level suitable for graduates new to the resins and surface coatings industries. They give a basic understanding of the topics covered, whilst reflecting recent advances within the industry.
Within these three books the chemistries of different types of resins for surface coatings are explained. In each case, an overview is given, suitable for the graduate new to industry or for less technically involved management. Coating formulations are given to illustrate the use of different types of resin. As with the chemistry, they are not meant to be exhaustive. These books should provide a valuable guide for formulators and should be considered as an essential aid for the 'bench chemist'.
The aim has been to give a general overview, including the necessary background information required to ensure that coating formulators understand the resins with which they are working and the principles of crosslinking.
Resins within Volume III include;
Polyurethanes
Polyamides
Phenolplasts
Aminoplasts
Maleic resins

Product Description
This spiritual treasure is available in three editions. It is taken entirely from His writings, recorded Satsangs including many rare ones that have never been released and intimate gatherings with devotees in America over four decades. As written in the introduction: His message is the timeless wisdom of the Himalayan sages in a language understandable to a modern world, regardless of East or West. He did not espouse any one path but taught that all paths lead to the One God and that we are all potentially children of light.

The wisdom of a life lived in devotion.......2004-10-30
Also available in a hardcover edition, Immortal Light: The Blissful Life and Wisdom of Swami Amar Jyoti is the life story of Swami Amar Jyoti (1928-2001), one of the most prominent gurus who brought understanding of of Yoga and Vedanta to the West, born into a Hindu family in Larkana, Sindh Province, before the partitioning of India and Pakistan by the British. Known for his kindness, his vision, and his humility, he presents his tale in his own words, skillfully edited by Sita Stuhlmiller. Inset sections of color photographs add a vibrant dimension to the wisdom of a life lived in devotion.
Product Description
The Story of Divaali is a wonderful rendition of the "Ramayana," an age-old Hindu epic filled with magic, miracles and adventure. The compelling story tells of a young prince Rama who overcomes Ravana the Demon King. Out of his triumph, Divaali, the Indian festival of lights, is born.
The powerful narrative is perfectly complemented by the jewel-like illustrations of Nilesh Mistry. Drawing on the versions told to him in childhood by his parents, Jatinder Verma brings the essence of this great Indian epic to life for a new generation.
Customer Reviews:
Should be titled differently.......2004-09-30
It is an excellent story book indeed but it should have been titled something like "The Ramayan". I bought it to introduce my child to the festival . Most of the book depicts the Ramayan and there is very little about Diwali as such. I guess it is a challanging task to write a book about Diwali without mentioning Ramayan. The illustrations are very pleasing to the eye and are proportionate to the text contained on each page. This should make it easier for early readers to keep the interest as they read. There is a page on how it is celebrated currently, it would have been more interesting to have some more illustrations to support that. I certainly recommend it to anyone interested.
The Story of Divaali.......2004-05-31
The pages of this book are beautified with the carefully planed placement of illustrations, similar to efforts put forth in the preparation of the Divaali family festival. This book offers those who don't practice Divaali a detailed understanding to the importance of this celebration and it similarities to the Christian celebration of Christmas.
Great read for children and adults.......2003-04-19
Accurate ancient Hindu story, very nicely done for children and many adults.
Book Description
At twenty-one, the passionate and headstrong Ann Veronica Stanley is determined to rule her own life. She escapes the stodgy suburbs to London, enrolling as a student of biology and immersing herself in a world of intellectuals, socialists, and suffragettes. Soon, however, she finds that freedom comes at a price, when she meets the brilliant Capes, a married acad emic, and falls hopelessly in love.
Customer Reviews:
A great novel.......2006-05-08
I'm not much of a novel reader, especially of realistic fiction. But I wanted to read this one, just to see how HG Wells handled such a novel. I was also intrigued with the themes I'd read were involved.
I immediately felt at home in the milieu of the novel. And though male myself, I completely identified with the young female protagonist, a college student in biology who leaves home to strike out on her own. In the process, she finds out about the ups and downs of "real life". The story is told almost exclusively from her point of view. Of course, the setting is now 100 years ago, but there was almost nothing in the novel that truly dated it. All the characters had motivations and acted in ways that seem completely contemporary today. I became completely enthralled with Ann Veronica's life and adventures, even staying up late to finish the book. She became a real person to me.
In terms of this edition of the book, not only are there end notes explaining allusions and other points, but also there is a very useful glossary included which defines unusual words. Of course, there is also a helpful introduction by a contemporaty critic, as well as a preface Wells wrote to an edition of the book published in the 1920s.
I can easily see this novel being adapted for Masterpiece Theatre. With enough publicity, I think it could become a top seller again today. It is definitely a story for the ages.
Book Description
Throughout Indian history, many authors and performers have produced, and many patrons have supported, diverse tellings of the story of the exiled prince Rama, who rescues his abducted wife by battling the demon king who has imprisoned her. The contributors to this volume focus on these "many" Ramayanas.
While most scholars continue to rely on Valmiki's Sanskrit Ramayana as the authoritative version of the tale, the contributors to this volume do not. Their essays demonstrate the multivocal nature of the Ramayana by highlighting its variations according to historical period, political context, regional literary tradition, religious affiliation, intended audience, and genre. Socially marginal groups in Indian society--Telugu women, for example, or Untouchables from Madhya Pradesh--have recast the Rama story to reflect their own views of the world, while in other hands the epic has become the basis for teachings about spiritual liberation or the demand for political separatism. Historians of religion, scholars of South Asia, folklorists, cultural anthropologists--all will find here refreshing perspectives on this tale.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent collection of essays.......1999-11-05
I strongly recommend this book to any reader who wishes to get a sense of the diversity of Ramayana traditions out there. It truly shows how the Ramayana is more than a single story. The epic is a living body of ideas and pieces which can be put together in lots of ways to illuminate life in many contexts.
This book is best for those who already have a lot of familiarity with the basic story and have read at least one version in depth. Otherwise, it will be hard for you to appreciate this book.
Book Description
Internationally renowned South African artist William Kentridge creates animated movies from drawings for projection, charcoal renderings he alters during filming. Paralleling the political upheaval in his homeland, his works reflect the tenuous nature of memory, both personal and historical.
Published to accompany Kentridge's first retrospective exhibition in the United States and South Africa, this fascinating book offers in-depth coverage of the artist's animated films, drawings, and theater productions. Kentridge has also created 16 new, previously unpublished artist's pages for the book.
A wealth of colorplates, essays, and an interview exploring various facets of Kentridge's creative process, and a chronology outlining both his and his country's milestones make this book the most comprehensive examination of Kentridge's work to date.
Customer Reviews:
Catalog of an Incredible Exhibition.......2002-10-13
William Kentridge is a white South African born in 1955. He is best known for animations, based on large charcoal paintings, which have as their subject the complexity of living a meaningful life in the warped society of South Africa.
Kentridge makes the films by working on the charcoal paintings, then clicking the film camera one frame at a time. He then walks back to the painting and works on it, before exposing another twenty-fifth of a second.
Kentridge is articulate and interesting and has established himself as a great artist in the tradition of Hogarth, Daumier and the German expressionists. His exhibition, which closed here in Los Angeles last week, was breathtaking. This book is the catalog of that exhibition.
a very interesting artist.......2002-09-18
I leave off a "star" only because viewing Kentridge's drawings can not substitute the experience of viewing his films. Indeed, looking the charcoal drawings I wonder at what stage of the sequence it is in. Is this the last step in the drawing? Looking at a drawing outside of its time base can also be a positive. I love searching the surface for smudge marks and erased hands and arms. His drawings end up being a record of movement (something that most single drawings fail to capture). For anyone who doesn't know, by the way, Kentridge animates his charcoal drawings using filmic stop motion techniques. The results are amazing. Anyone interested in drawing and painting, the birth of early film, and South African Politics: here is your artist.

Beautifully written book - DISTURBING!.......2001-08-29
In college, I read this book. I was beside myself with misery and despair for weeks. It was really well written - don't get me wrong - but... The book should have a warning on the inside label... If you aren't at THE ABSOLUTE happiest place in your life emotionally - DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. Sorry. But it's how I felt... and so did most of my friends.
Unflinching and fiery.......2000-08-28
This autobiography of the last days of her quite obsessive relationship with Sita is the story of a dying love affair, where each day's petty slights and delightful surprises are digested for the insightful truths and harsh realities of self analysis. Like Violette Leduc, Millett charts every moment and every emotion during the days of bliss and the days of spite in the struggle to save the love they share, until Sita's ultimate betrayal by leaving for a man. Included in this new edition is a portion of the elegy Millett wrote after Sita's suicide in 1978, which is a stunning finale for this captivating memoir. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't find this at all depressing. Rather, I found this book uplifting and mesmerising.
a phenomenal description of love-sickness.......2000-04-25
I agree with the first reviewer that this books is disturbing and depressing. Clearly this is not the author's finest hour as a person. But what saved it for me was that as an author, Millet really does shine. She captures the truth of being the one who loves and needs more, and it IS painful. I found this book fascinating.
A harrowing tale of lesbian love and loss.......2000-04-04
The narrator Kate, an accomplished New York artist, returns to San Francisco after a long absence in an attempt to rekindle her steamy romance with the exotic Sita. What follows is a stream-of-consciousness narrative of hope and despair, a roller-coaster ride from erotic highs to suicidal lows. As with any love story, the reader's response depends on his/her ability to identify and sympathize with the characters, and this is where it just didn't work for me. I immediately identified the Sita character as self-absorbed, dishonest and manipulative and it was difficult to understand why an intelligent, accomplished person like Kate would allow herself to be degraded by such a lover. It occurred to me about halfway through that if Sita had been a man and the story proceeded as it did, we would call it just one more tale of low female self esteem and male emotional abuse and I doubt it would ever have been published. The one redeeming aspect of this book, however, is that it does manage to capture the claustrophobic, edge-of-sanity atmosphere that comes in the final days of a passionate love affair in it's death throes. Just be warned to lock up the liquor cabinet before you begin- a few hundred pages of this is enough to send anyone on a bender.
