According to Klein, the author of All Too Human: The Love Story of Jack and Jackie Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis began courting the widow less than 48 hours after her husband's assassination, but she made him wait, which drove him crazy. Soon she got drunk with Marlon Brando and later with Clint Hill (the agent had thrown his body on top of hers during Oswald's fusillade) at D.C.'s fanciest restaurant. Brando she took home to seduce by dancing to Wayne Newton's "Danke Schoen," pressing her thighs against him, but he fled into the night. Cowboy-handsome Clint Hill and Jackie were seen necking and petting, occasionally disappearing beneath their banquette. Klein (the spoilsport) says Jackie didn't sleep with Ros Gilpatrick, Lord Harlech, Frank Sinatra, or Bobby Kennedy, even though Ethel was told, "He's spending an awful lot of time with the widder."

The book is arranged in bite-sized mini-chapters, and there's a naughty treat in almost every bite. Though Ari didn't kiss Jackie at their wedding, an alleged accidental eyewitness calls their lovemaking "energetic and creative"--maybe because, unlike with his previous girlfriends, Ari didn't burn Jackie with cigars or wear her clothes. Jackie may have spent over $2 million (in 1998 dollars) on clothes, but hey, her pal Bunny Mellon spent $6 million.

Klein offers lots of intimate alleged facts, like her three face-lifts in the '80s, but the best thing about the book are the quotes, some of them Jackie's. Her friend Brendan Gill poses the central question of her life: "How does one live publicly in a world where one has to lie?" Some of the truths are probably in this book. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

In this journalistic tour de force, bestselling author Edward Klein, a friend of Jacqueline Onassis's for many years, takes us behind the public image to give us a story that has never been told before. For this myth-shattering portrait, Klein has amassed a wealth of exclusive information from private documents and correspondence; FBI files; and hundreds of interviews with Jackie's friends, the associates of Aristotle Onassis, and people familiar with her longtime companion, the mysterious diamond merchant Maurice Tempelsman. Many people break their silence here for the first time.

Much more than a portrait of a famous celebrity, JUST JACKIE: HER PRIVATE YEARS captures the essence of a captivating woman whose passion for wealth was matched only by her deep need for privacy.

5 out of 5 stars I's nice to see that someone cared........2006-09-24

As a avid devotee to the Jackie O myth, I have read a few untruths in my time. While Barbara Leaming's "Mrs. Kennedy" is the most factual portrait of Jackie in the White House, I believe that this book is the best that comes close to the truth about her life after. She is written about as a woman, not as a myth...and also as a good person. She is finally shown as as she truly is. A mythmaker, a style mavin....a person. I love this book. I don't think anyone should miss this book, for it not only tells the story of a legendary woman, but of us all. She was amazing. And she was real. That is what this story tells us. Thank goodness someone cared enough to get behind the mask.

3 out of 5 stars worth it for former Secret Service interviews.......2005-12-28

Edward Klein spoke to Ham Brown, executive director of the Association of Former Secret Service Agents, and former U.S.S.S. agents Larry Newman, Paul Landis, Bill Livingood, and Frank Yeager, as have I. That said, much of Klein's work, in this book and others, has a tabloid journalism feel. Still, there are nuggets of value...just read with a skeptical eye, here and there.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2003-11-25

I don't mind it when people shatter a facade. Only as long as it's true. This book holds no credibility. When Klein claims he was an acquaintence with Jackie, I think that means he picked up something she dropped once. Another thing that seems suspicious is that Klein keeps writing books about the Kennedys. How many times can you write about the same subject? Get a life, Klein.

4 out of 5 stars Fleshing Out Jackie.......2000-02-18

I have been a lifelong follower of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and thought I knew a great deal about the facts of her life. But like everyone else I was on a quest to understand what was under the facade. This book didn't bring more insight about the ever elusive "Jackie", but it did provide a fleshed out version of many of the extraordinary circumstances of her incredible life. With so much of the history of her life presented like "visual" soundbites, it was engrossing to read this book's details which to a great extent humanized Jackie to me as never before. The image may have seemed effortless, but the cost of her public persona was more than anyone should have to pay. It is strangely comforting that she was so very human, and such a woman of her time -- at first looking for her purpose through a man, and finally finding her identity and happiness from within. I thought when I was a child at the time of JFK's assassination that I would never have been able to do what Jackie did during the time of his death and funeral. It is reassuring to know that no one, not even Jackie, could possibly behave the way she did without a tidal wave of emotional pain that nearly spanned the remainder of her time on earth.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2002-08-31

"Purple Hearts and Golden Memories" is essential book for any serious fan of Minnesota sports. It is by far the most complete and comprehensive source of Viking information. You will not find a list of say, every Viking who has ever been in training camp along with their jersey number/numbers worn in any other text available. The only thing it lacks it complete game by game statistics. But I know of only one other reference that includes such info, and that is an extremely rare 15th Anniversary softcover publication which I believe was only sent to season ticket holders. This book is a must have. Like the reviewer listed above, I believe this book will be out of print shortly.

4 out of 5 stars 35 years is an interesting trip for even the newest fan........1998-02-16

This book, which looks as if it will not be available for too long, is a must for any collector of Viking history.

With large sections given to all the coaches in this franchises' 35 year history, it quickly shows the character of the teams throughout each era

From the drill sergeant-like coaches, to the laid back genius of Bud Grant

Extensive interviews and quotes from previous players are everywhere.

    Book Description

Small town Minnesota plays a leading role in Minnesota Memories, a new collection of twenty-seven remembrances written and edited by former Albert Lea resident Joan Claire Graham and Owatonna native Kathy Megyeri.

With tones ranging from melancholy to hilarious, these Minnesota Memories convey an impression of what it is to be grounded in the Midwestern culture of the mid twentieth century. Mature Minnesotans will relate to stories about family secrets, Mom's good Bavarian china, childhood games, local radio shows, country school, or the Owatonna motel entrepreneurs who were the vanguard of the travel industry boom after World War II.

These true stories invite the reader to empathize. Their richly detailed and good humored narrative evokes similar memories in the minds of readers. Whether as an addition to a collection, a gift, a historical reference, a conversation piece, or merely as a completely enjoyable reading experience, Minnesota Memories is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Wagon Load of Memories.......2003-05-23

One story, "Toyota City", is worth the price of all of the "Minnesota Memories" books. Joan and her fellow writers take us back to our childhood and memories of friends and relatives. Even though I am from North Dakota, these collections of stories ring true to the stories we were told when visiting the "Home Place" in Minnesota. Never been to Minnesota? Read the books and find people as they really are. People like you and me or like we wish we were. Fill your wagon with real stories of real people as you join Joan and friends in a journey to the real Minnesota. We were privileged to have Joan visit our home. She is as delightful as her books and her time with us is now one of our very own "Minnesota Memories."

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia and Laughter from the North Star State.......2001-12-10

Readers of this book write and say, "Send me another; I want to give it for Christmas to my relatives who already have every refrigerator magnet and walleye shot glass from Mall of America." Tell newcomers or those who have retired from Minnesota winters and relocated in Florida that this is one book they should share with anyone who still holds the North Star State dear to their hearts. It's a gem!

    4 out of 5 stars Uplifting Memories.......2001-11-22

You'll be charmed by the North Star memories these 2 ladies evoke of their lives in Minnesota in the '50's. How I had forgotten the polio epidemic, the love-affair with Elvis most of us had, the local swimming holes, and the scrap books I kept but now can't find. I laughed, I cried, and I sent in my own submission to their upcoming Vol. II because I too was introduced to my first theatrical performance at the high school gym when basketball nets served to hold spot lights and the velvet curtain was strung between them. Their writing even captures the speech patterns I wanted to lose, but my Minnesota accent still gives me away. Their guest writers capture memories that my family holds dear--the local church pageant, the one-room schoolhouse that educated most of my family, and the centennial parade with its primite floats and antique cars that stole our hearts and made us yearn for those by-gone years of the simple life, valued time with family, and Christian values that are never appreciated till later in life. This is a fun read, one that all Midwesterners can identify with and appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a visit back home.......2001-09-06

Minnesota Memories is the kind of book you finish at three in the morning and wish you had more chapters yet to read. It evokes thoughts of the quirkiness in Minnesota practices--calling casseroles hot dishes, referring to going to any of Minnesota's l0, 000 lakes as "going to THE Lake", or referring to the noon meal as dinner and the six p.m. meal as supper. Remember when adventure was having the family sit down for supper at
    seven?

Authors Joan Graham and Kathy Megyeri, both native Minnesotans, recall some of their favorite tales of growing up in the North Star state. The book brings forth pure joy. It is clean, totally charming, and recalls a Minnesota where hard work, innocence--or not getting caught-- and having a little fun was the way to go. The descriptions of the localities, the stories, the lifestyles and even the pictures of ancestors, proms, school and First Communions bring back memories and smiles.

Growing up in Minnesota in the 50's, 60's and 70's meant that what happened in your house, stayed in your house. You learned to keep your mouth closed and talked about politics, the price of strawberries or the weather. As we were growing up, we all thought we were the only ones who had strange relatives, wanted to juggle on the Johnny Carson Show or were fearful that someone would find out we were different.

Minnesota Memories authors share their own family practices and stories, and guess what? The same things that were shushed in our houses, also happened in the authors' homes. As you cuddle in a soft chair to read the stories, you'll remember long forgotten thoughts and memories of life in Minnesota.

One particularly endearing tale tells of Joan Graham mother who had been raised during the Depression and had learned to live with the frugality of many of our parents. She longed for something utterly beautiful and regal. Finally, she was able to send away for an elegant eight place setting of Bavarian china. For almost twenty-five years the treasured china was never used, however...

The writing style is honest and freshly straightforward. You find yourself right there in the room with the story teller. You put the book down and the events stay with you and mingle with your own past memories. This is one sweet little book that feels like a visit back home to Minnesota--or to any state that was once home. This is one book not to miss.

    Marilyn Mikulewicz Baranski
    Minnesota native--thirty years removed

    5 out of 5 stars Memory Lane.......2001-09-05

Personal history--two words that, for many, generate mixed feelings. The value of getting something, anything down on paper is inarguable. How many of us wish that Mom or Dad, Grandma or Grandpa had left us something written to remember them by? How many (or few) generations back do you have to go before ancestors become merely names, because the details of their lives have become forever lost? On the other hand, the task of writing personal or family history is incredibly daunting. Where to begin? How to get it all down without becoming tedious? In Minnesota Memories, Graham and Megyeri provide us with a delightful example of personal history done right. Their formula is simple: take a topic and run with it. Imaginary friends, moving away, Elvis, old photos, summer, the skeleton in the closet. Forget the timelines and the begats, the crises and grudges, instead write about the everyday stuff of life. With humor and grace, the authors explore both the ordinary and the odd. They help us feel we have experienced what life was really like in small-town, mid-century America. Minnesota Memories provides would-be family historians a fine example of what a successful memoir looks like. But would someone please tell me, what in heck are "kickerinos"?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars People's Histories.......2002-10-11

Minnesota Memories includes stories for all of us. Some are funny and some are inspiring. Although the author/editor wrote several of the most pleasurable stories, the most interesting aspect of the book is that she has encouraged average people to write stories about their own lives. Some of the stories are autobiography and some are history. Many of the stories took me back to experiences in my own life. Some made me cry. Most are of universal interest. These are real people.

    5 out of 5 stars She's done it again!.......2002-07-18

The Minnesota Memories series reminds me of the old PeeWee's Playhouse TV show. In every episode of PWP, the eponymous host would announce the word of the day, then instruct viewers to "scream real loud" whenever they heard the chosen word. Viewers would be amazed (and possibly irked) at how many times common words like "door", "more" or even "like" would crop up in the course of the show. It sometimes seemed that cosmic forces aligned to push the word of the day to the forefront. But what in heck does this all have to do with Minnesota Memories? Let me explain.

In MM1, the word "kickerino" appeared in more than one essay, written by more than one author. Why? Cosmic forces? Who knows? In MM2, the word of the day is "Odin". Odin, a tiny town by anyone's reckoning, accounts for more than its share of ink in this edition of Minnesota Memories. The Odin stories are not only compelling, but they allude to other, equally compelling tales. We all have stories, and publications like Minnesota Memories allow them to be heard and celebrated. Who knows? Perhaps something near and dear to you will be the "word of the day" in Minnesota Memories 3. If it is, you can count on me to scream real loud!

5 out of 5 stars She Did It Again!.......2002-06-25

Joan Graham grandly succeeded with her sequel to Vol. I of Minnesota Memories. She remembered her first ski lesson so vividly that I laughed until I cried as she related the frozen tundra on which she stood, her attempt to be "cool," and shopping for that perfect outfit that would make her ski as well as Billy Kidd. Her book also includes memories by 34 others whose lives have been impacted by living or working in the North Star State. Let's hope Joan has the stamina and sales to continue collecting even more Minnesota Memories--it'll become a state treasure!

5 out of 5 stars Rating the Best - Minnesota Memories 2.......2002-06-21

Minnesota Memories 2 was delightful! It holds your interest thoughout and each story is a special experience in itself.

As one who grew up in the midwest, I can relate so very well to everything expressed by those who contributed to its writing. It makes one realize, even after so many years, that what you experienced as a child perhaps more than a half century ago,was also shared by so many others. It brings the past so much closer than it has ever been before and you know there are many people out there who feel as you do. Thank you Joan Graham, for making it all possible!

5 out of 5 stars Real Stories from Real People.......2003-05-10

This is the third "Minnesota Memories" from Joan Graham. I've read them all! This one is as delightful as its predecessors.
Graham suggests that you get together with friends and read the stories aloud--they are sure to trigger associations and soon people will be telling their own stories. Joan Graham believes that everyone has stories just waiting to be told or written. This book attests to her belief--it is a wonderful collection of real stories from real people.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Hot Dish.......2003-05-09

I really enjoyed this book - it evokes the bittersweet memories of growing up in the midwest - and not just in Minnesota. This is the real thing, not some tongue-in-cheek send up of "hot dish & ludefisk."

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for All Who Love Minnesotans.......2003-05-05

I married a St. Olaf graduate who still carries her Minnesota accent after 40 years. Until I read this volume and the other two books in the series, I never really understood those North Star inhabitants who are afraid to say anything for fear of "making waves," who adore Eddie Cochran's hit "Sittin' in the Balcony," who worship Owatonna's Sullivan designed bank as a shrine, and who worry about everything from weather to the success of this year's corn crop. These books should be required reading for those who know and love Minnesotans or just want to understand the people who make the state so special. The final entry, Governor Pawlenty's Inaugural Address, made me especially appreciate Minnesotans' contributions to our daily lives.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked on these Books!.......2003-05-02

These Minnesota Memories books just keep on getting better and better. I picked up this one last week after I heard the author talking about it on WCCO radio, and I couldn't put it down till I read the last page. Some of the stories are funny while others are poignant, historically rich or even sad, but they're all honest, true, and tremendously entertaining. These books should be designated as Minnesota's Good Will Ambassadors. If you are from Minnesota or if you know someone from that great state, you must read all three volumes. Minnesota Memories 3 is just as terrific as the first two.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Batch.......2004-11-23

This book series just keeps getting better. Volume 4 is the biggest collection of Minnesota Memories stories so far, with 50 true tales by 39 writers from all over the state. A mom takes her teenage son on a winter adventure to learn dog sledding in the frozen Boundary Waters area, a conductor tries to save a train stuck in a cocoon of snow, an outdoor college performance of "The Music Man" takes on a plague of fish flies and gale force winds, a daughter helps her father plant his last garden, and a small town librarian tells about the cowpie plaster that saved her brother's infected foot many years ago. These books are like a pot luck supper. You never know what's going to be there, but it's always good because everybody brings what they do best for all to enjoy. I love these Minnesota Memories books!
