Book Description

Through the centuries, people from all walks of life have heard the siren call of a pilgrimage, the lure to journey away from the familiar in search of understanding. But is a pilgrimage even possible these days for city-dwellers enmeshed in the pressures of work and family life? Or is there a way to be a pilgrim without leaving one’s life behind? James Attlee answers these questions with Isolarion, a thoughtful, streetwise, and personal account of his pilgrimage to a place he thought he already knew—the Cowley Road in Oxford, right outside his door.

Isolarion takes its title from a type of fifteenth-century map that isolates an area in order to present it in detail, and that’s what Attlee, sharp-eyed and armed with tape recorder and notebook, provides for Cowley Road. The former site of a leper hospital, a workhouse, and a medieval well said to have miraculous healing powers, Cowley Road has little to do with the dreaming spires of the tourist’s or student’s Oxford. What Attlee presents instead is a thoroughly modern, impressively cosmopolitan, and utterly organic collection of shops, restaurants, pubs, and religious establishments teeming with life and reflecting the multicultural makeup of the surrounding neighborhood.

From a sojourn in a sensory-deprivation tank to a furtive visit to an unmarked pornography emporium, Attlee investigates every aspect of the Cowley Road’s appealingly eclectic culture, where halal shops jostle with craft jewelers and reggae clubs pulsate alongside quiet churchyards. But the very diversity that is, for Attlee, the essence of Cowley Road’s appeal is under attack from well-meaning city planners and predatory developers. His pilgrimage is thus invested with melancholy: will the messy glories of the Cowley Road be lost to creeping homogenization?

Drawing inspiration from sources ranging from Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy to contemporary art, Attlee is a charming and companionable guide who revels in the extraordinary embedded in the everyday. Isolarion is at once a road movie, a quixotic stand against uniformity, and a rousing hymn in praise of the complex, invigorating nature of the twenty-first-century city.

3 out of 5 stars Street of Dreams.......2007-05-28

The author writes about his investigations arising from walks along a modern mixed-cultural and commercial street, Cowley Road, near both his home and Oxford University. Mr. Attlee, a talented writer, is best when allowing the shopkeepers and others with ties to the ancient street tell their own stories. However, the book, as it proceeds, slides into ever more of Mr. Attlee's thoughts on life (anti-automobile, anti-Iraq war, anti-big business) than on the more interesting and vibrant community that borders Cowley Road.

      Book Description

The outstanding beauty and distinction of the small towns of Provence have proved irresistibly attractive to visitors from America for the best part of a century. From the hills and mountains of the Alps and the Lubéron to the rich vine-growing country of the Var and the delightful coastal resorts, these communities are special places indeed.

In the small towns one finds the true spirit of Provence. Terracotta roofs cling at strange angles to stone and plaster; deep, velvety shade covers the ground beneath tall plane trees in some peaceful square, enlivened by the sound of water from an ancient fountain. Sometimes calm, sometimes vibrant, but always timelessly appealing, the most beautiful country towns of Provence are presented here in Alex Ramsay's perceptive photographs and Helena Attlee's evocative commentaries.

This magnificently illustrated survey opens in the west of the province, marked by the Roman presence and home to the lively regional centers of Arles and Uzès. In the center of Provence—the départements of Var and Vaucluse—are such attractions as L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, famous for its antique markets, and Hyères, one of the first resorts on the Riviera. Haute-Provence and Maritimes, which sweep around the north of the province and finally descend to the sea in the east, embrace the varied gems of mountainous Saint-Martin-Vésubie, coastal and Italianate Menton, and Grasse, perfume capital of the world. The variety revealed in this visual and textual feast is incredible—and all set in the dramatic contours of one of Europe's most striking landscapes.

Like other volumes in this internationally best-selling series, The Most Beautiful Country Towns of Provence is completed by lists of sights to visit and places to stay and to eat. 260 color photographs.

3 out of 5 stars Not My Favorite Book.......2007-07-23

This classic coffee table book features prominent villages in Provence. The birdseye photography is lovely, but this collection could benefit from pictures that take you into the town and show the reader what makes each one distinct. I own a half dozen books that profile French gardens, homes and interiors - this is not my favorite book.

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of Provence is captured in this book!.......2003-03-26

If you, like me, cannot afford to travel to the south of France, this large-format book is the next best thing!!! Its stunning photography will really enchant you and leave you with a sense of regret that you cannot be there now, at this exact moment. Looking at the beautiful pictures of old but graceful buildings, narrow streets and dramatic landscapes you can almost sense certain serenity permeating those ageless country towns of Provence, endlessly basking in the golden rays of sun... Aaah, Provence....

        Book Description

For more than 500 years the gardens of Italy have attracted visitors from all over the world. Many of the greatest artists and architects of the Renaissance were employed in their design and ornamentation. Italian Gardens is a practical and beautifully illustrated guide to more than 60 of the finest examples, from the seventeenth-century gardens of Castello d'Aglie in Piedmont to the thirteenth-century Moorish garden of the Villa Rufolo in Campania. As well as well-known gardens (for example, the Boboli gardens, Florence, Villa d'Este outside Rome), the book takes visitors away from the well-trodden tourist paths to a private world of beauty and, often, eccentricity. Both practical and up to date, the guide provides histories and descriptions, as well as detailed information on locations, facilities, opening times, and accessibility.

On a recent visit to Italy I went prepared with Penelope Hobhouse Edith Wharton and Helena Ramsay and it was not until I loaned the latter out that I realised how useful it is as you try and find your way around the hazards of being a garden addict in that country !!
(Reviewed at length on the u k site)
I endorse nearly everything that the previous writer says but would like to add how practical it is as the directions to the gardens are not easily found in any other guide or Tourist Office.

I'd be very happy to have it back !

4 out of 5 stars Don't let the small format fool you.......2001-05-18

At first glance, the small format of this book (only 3 x 4 inches, appx.) might lead you to forget about it. Don't make that mistake. Ramsay & Attlee have provided much more information about the history and features of the Italian Gardens than can be found in the "rival" Garden Lovers Guide to Italy by Hobhouse. Little of their material is new, but in compiling the best facts & anecdotes from Wharton, Masson, Lazzaro, et al., Ramsey & Attlee have written the book which I would be most likely to take along with me as a guide to the gardens. The one main fault of the volume is that by devoting more space to each gardens, the number of gardens covered has been reduced. For example, at Lago Maggiore, the Isola Bella is covered, but the Isola Madre is not. Probably the best thing to do if one is going off on a garden tour of Italy is to read Edith Wharton and Claudia Lazzaro before you go, and then to take both Ramsay & Attlee's book and Hobhouse's Guide along on the journey.

          Product Description

Clement Attlee was a Labour politician and prime minister from 1945-51. He was the first Labour prime minister with an absolute Common's majority. Attlee's post-war government enacted a broad program of socialist legislation in spite of conditions of austerity in which rationing was actually extended. By the end of 1946 acts had been passed nationalizing the Bank of England and creating the National Health Service. The railways, the mines and supply of gas and electricity soon followed into public ownership. Meanwhile he had been closely involved in the process of dismantling the British Empire, with independence given to India, Pakistan, Ceylon and Burma. Yet he believed in Britain playing a strong role in world affairs, accepting British participation in the Korean War. His majority was reduced to six in the 1950 election and he lost the election of the following year.

            Book Description

Clement Attlee was a remarkable politician and served as Britain's (arguably) most successful Labour Party Prime Minister from 1945-51. It is time he was re-examined, and, for the first time, by someone from the generation whose lives his government affected radically. Each time he is re-examined, he seems to emerge as a greater Prime Minister, and a more complex and interesting man, than was previously thought.

                Book Description

This publication contains the correspondence exchanged by J.V. Stalin, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, with Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the U.S.A., Harry S. Truman, President of the U.S.A., Winston S. Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Clement R. Attlee, Prime Minister of Great Britain, during the Great Patriotic War and in the period between victory and the end of 1945.

Tendentiously selected parts of this correspondence were published outside the Soviet Union at difference times resulting in a distorted picture of the Soviet attitude during the war years.

This publication is to help restore historical truth. It contains the full texts of all documents available in the Soviet Union of J.V. Stalin's correspondence with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Winston S. Churchill and Clement R. Attlee during the period in question. Certain messages quoted or otherwise mentioned in publications abroad are missing from this book, as their texts have not been found in the Soviet archives.

The correspondence between the heads of the Governments published here was conducted chiefly by exchanging code messages through the Soviet Embassies in Washington and London and through the Embassies of the U.S.A. and Great Britain in Moscow. The messages were decoded in the respective language. Some of the messages were delivered by diplomatic post or by authorized representatives of the Power concerned.

                    Book Description

When we read accounts of polar exploration today, we are impressed. When we read of the exploits of men such as Ernest Shackleton we are astounded. To survive under the conditions that he and his men experienced, with equipment deemed primitive by today's standards, is almost beyond our ken. Shackleton tells the story of his last expedition (1914-1917) when his ship, the Endurance, was crushed by pack ice. He went on to complete an 800-mile open boat journey and then a twenty-mile hike through the mountains in order to save his men. And he did.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with pictures.......2007-01-12

I'm rather obsessed with Antarctic exploration at the moment, and reading material is harder to come by than I had first anticipated. This book has many good pictures and lots of diary entries, etc, from Shakleton and others. Well worth it.

                          5 out of 5 stars Literally Chilling!.......2001-03-15

My good friend Antonia Martin just gave me this book for my birthday. Antonia, you are an absolute Treasure!

I have become fascinated with the Shackleton story, not only for the awesome testament to dogged determination to succeed in the face of seemingly daunting odds that it is, but because apparently my Grandfather knew him quite well and worked on the planning of the journey back in London. Somewhere we have a signed original of the book from 1919 amongst Mother's belongings, back in England.

This is a bone chilling visual and literary step by aching step trudge through the most inhospitable place on Earth. As the Endurance, their ship, died so their own endurance was born. And what an endurance that was!

As my eyes wander the pages in the warm comfort of bed my mind is wind-whipped by the Antarctic blasts Shackleton and his team ultimately survived! It is quite simply one of the most amazing stories it has ever been my pleasure to absorb. I am in awe of the achievement described and pictured in this book.

                          Everybody should read it!
