Book Description
This comprehensive guide for new parents finding themselves overwhelmed dealing with the reality of parenting provides "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice to allay their fears. Written in a compassionate yet authoritative tone by two moms who are also pediatricians, this guide covers a wealth of topics that often prove daunting in the first eight weeks of a child's life. Starting with "Into the Mouths of Babes" (the trials of breastfeeding) and "What Comes in Must Come Out" (a discussion of "pee and poop") and moving on through "Fever: Trial by Fire" and "Seeing Yellow: Jaundice," this guide offers sound advice that will enable parents to feel confident about their parenting skills. Hints on daily living, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn are also provided.

Brilliant book to prepare you for bring baby home!.......2007-10-05
Great book. It is informative and gives you a good base of information to feel prepared for bring baby home. We would highly recommend this as a core book to have in you bookshelf!
BEST book for up to 6 months old.......2007-08-31
PROS: Easy to read, detailed, has illustrations, straightforward. Wish I read this while I was pregnant!
CONS: Useful for babies up to 6 months
Cliff notes for your newborn.......2007-08-17
It is a good quick synopsis. A caring for your newborn cliff notes. They address all the major topics, deciphering cries, poop, bathing, diapering, sleeping, car safety, illnesses etc. If you are going to buy several books regarding your baby than you could do worse than to purchase this one. However, if you only want to purchase one book, get
what to Expect the 1st yr. They have an entire section devoted to newborn care. It basically gives all of the information that you could find in here. Plus, you are able to use it as a resource for more than just the first few weeks.
Best book to prepare for baby!.......2007-08-09
If you read only one book to help you prepare for your new baby, this should be it. It is straightforward and full of information, but not overwhelming or confusing at all. It does not waste a lot of space with excessive or redundent explanations or cutesy humor. My husband (who is a doctor) and I (definitely not a doctor) both love this book, and recommend it to every soon-to-be parent.
Very helpful book.......2007-06-21
I am a first time mom and was very nervous about what I was going to do after I had my baby as far as taking care of it. Before I read this book I was very scared and nervous about whether or not I was going to know what to do. This book sets your mind at ease and breaks things down in layman's terms, it doesn't give you more information than you need, and it doesn't give you opinion based information. I recommend this book to the scared first time mom.
Book Description
He has been cursed since age 15, carrying always the appositive affixed eternally to his name--the youngest pitcher in major league baseball. And yet the Joe Nuxhall story neither begins nor ends with the appositive. Baseball, in fact, may not even have been his best sport. He was a high school fullback, big and fast and good enough to be All-State, and he was unquestionably the best schoolboy basketball center in Ohio. He had pitched ten no-hitters before he was 15, however, and when he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds that historic time, he first had to get permission from his 9th grade principal, and ferried himself to Crosley Field and back, alone, on the bus. It was not, as history tells us, an auspicious occasion (an ERA of 67.50), but it launched the remarkable career of perhaps the best-loved and most enduring sports figure Cincinnati has ever seen. Noted sportscaster Greg Hoard's new biography, Joe, dramatically paints the Depression era background of "Hamilton Joe," closing industrial league games for his athletic father when the boy was barely a teenager, facing feared veteran slugger Stan Musial his first time up, and on to Birmingham, where he watched, astounded, while a lanky Negro pitcher named Satchel Paige warmed up by throwing strikes across a piece of chewing gum tinfoil. "The Old Left-Hander" pitched twenty-two seasons of professional baseball, including an All-Star year in 1955 when he led the league in shut-outs, and even when he retired to the broadcasting booth, he was still pitching batting practice. Greg Hoard's tale of baseball's last great innocent is the story of a charmed life, in which a blue-collar kid from a gritty industrial town, by great athleticism and a disarming guilelessness, found himself an enduring legend.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyment value is not much - Gets a 1 rating if you're not a Reds' fan.......2006-11-01
I grew up watching Joe pitch. Lots of pictures in the book, but it could have been much better written. Not that much about his major league career. Mostly about his life up to making the big leagues. If you're a Reds' fan you may want to read the book, but don't make it a priority or buy the book. If you're not a Reds' fan, don't bother.
Reds Fan Must Have.......2006-07-10
If you are a true Cincinnati Reds fan or even a Major League Baseball fan you must get this book. It is a biography of a baseball star. The writer didn't just write the book as he saw it he interviewed anyone and everyone that might have had contact with Joe Nuxhall throughout his life and carreer.
The best of Baseball and a Hometown.......2006-06-02
I purchased the book for a younger brother, knowing the Hamilton hometown scenes and connection would interest him. However, I couldn't put the book down. It was thrilling to hear of Joe's encounters with the Big League greats of the glory days of baseball. Greg Hoard's writing is clear and descriptive and moves you right along with it. This would be a good story if it were fiction. As a true narrative, it's fun and inspiring. It's easy to like Joe and it's easy to like this book.
A great baseball story.......2006-04-26
I thought I had pretty much heard all there was to hear about Joe, but I was way wrong. This book never got old because while Joe stated the obvious, he also took care to let us in on other things that happened at the same time. Everyone knows that Joe gave up his high school elgibility to sign with the Reds at the age of 14, but how many know that he later successfully petitioned to have his elgibility returned? That he was an all around athlete at Hamilton High? That he had a sister who died as a toddler? I didn't, but now I do. The minor league stories were the highlight of the book for me, but this is a recommended read for anyone who ever tuned into a Reds game on 700 WLW during one of the stretches where Joe had decided to punctuate the action with a long moment of silence, (Do I have this tuned right, or what?) or tried to figure out what was going on when the action was coming fast. You had to grow up with it to really appreciate it. Great book.

Johnny K Heading Home is an exciting, sometimes humorous, and always fast moving story of a kid growing up in a "loving," albeit dysfunctional, family. A friend said I should have called it: Leave it to Beaver Meets Bart Simpson.
Customer Reviews:
As much fun as "A Walk in the Woods"!.......2007-01-16
With its episodic structure, "Johnny K Heading Home" lets you enjoy casually written humor reminiscent of Bill Bryson's best efforts without having to remember where you left off -- if you can even put the book down once you join the adventures, that is. "Johnny K..." reads as easily as listening to a favorite uncle, though it includes some hilarious raunchiness that few uncles would dare to share.
He's still alive?!.......2007-01-16
I'll start by saying, I'm only 3/4 of the way through this book. Nearly every story makes you say the same thing... "He's still alive???" This is a great book and an easy read. Written just like you were sitting in front of the author as he was telling his stories/memories from his childhood. Though you were a mischievous child? Get this book and find out how lucky your parents were to have you instead of this terror child!

The intriguing memoir of one woman's remarkable struggle with the big-business interests in Western Canada .......2006-05-06
Heading For Home by Zahava Hanan is the intriguing memoir of one woman's remarkable struggle with the big-business interests in Western Canada and her attempts to preserve her ranch from degrading industrial pollution. An inherently fascinating account of her friends, cowhands, neighbors, and even the opposing businessmen themselves, Hanan describes her twenty year-battle to protect and preserve her property rights. Heading For Home is a story of strength, will-power, and incentive, as well as presenting a kind of spiritual quest for self realization. Heading For Home is to be given high praise and recommendation for readers who would enjoy a timeless but modern autobiographical story that informs, entertains, and occasionally inspires.

Book Description
A fast-moving tale of life on the river... This is the story of Tom and Roxa Malone, who lived and loved in the Ohio River Valley many years ago. The story starts as the Confederate Army crosses the Potomac in September, 1862, invading the North. Tom tries to run away from his strict Irish immigrant parents to enlist in the Pennsylvania Volunteers but is rejected because he is too young and receives a beating when he returns home to his parents. Two years later he finally breaks away from his overbearing parents and goes to work as a deckhand on the towboat Shark, beginning a series of adventures and narrow escapes in both war and peace. The annual rise and fall of the Ohio River begins to dominate Tom's life as he searches for his dream, finding happiness at last with his beloved Roxa. But he is not yet free of the bonds that still tie him to his family and to his Catholic faith... Based on a true story, this little book is full of fascinating real-life characters, traditions, places and events.

A LIFE THAT FLOWS WITH THE SEASONS.......2007-08-02
We all like to be caught up in a tale that has it's fair share of drama, romance, humor, and conflict. Add a river the size of the Monongahela, the beauty of the Ohio River Valley, and the boats that plied their trade in the late 1800's and the scene is complete. With John Malone at the helm of our story we are swept along as the seasons change, years pass, a family grows distant while another family grows.
Like most John yearned to get his family's story on paper. What he has accomplished is far beyond that. A quick start jumps us into the home of a devout Irish immigrant family outside Pittsburgh in 1862. Traditions are held and obeyed until an 18th birthday becomes a watershed, literally. When Tom Malone, John's great-grandfather makes his break, it's to the river. Little does he know that a stranded towboat on the Upper Ohio near the little town of Antiquity will change his life forever.
You'll be hard pressed to put this book down, so block off some time, mute the cell phone, and get comfy. With a bit of the Irish brogue thrown in here and there and a good depiction of the times we too can ride the river, work the farm, and feel the warmth as a life and a family that flows with the seasons finds its place in the history of our country.

Book Description
What harassed and harried city-dweller has not dreamed of escaping to a quiet place in the country? Sixteen years ago, Lawrence Scanlan--then books editor at The Whig Standard--had that same dream and he acted on it. With his wife, he moved from the city of Kingston to a 19th Century frame house on the Napanee River in the village of Camden East, Ontario (pop. 250).
Heading Home plots their transition from city to country, with its challenges and comic twists. The book's twelve chapters, each devoted to one month, chronicle a year in the life of the village. Scanlan points to a wide range of data and interviews dozens of people who have opted out of city life--all to show that a major demographic shift is underway.
As lyrical as it is practical, Heading Home shows the way to a new life beyond the freeways and high-rises. Heading Home is the perfect book for all who have lived in the city but who yearn to start over--in a country place.
Customer Reviews:
A must read if you plan to leave the craziness of the city.......1997-11-12
Larry, in his articulate prose, presents places and people whom you would like to have met. I know these people and find after reading the book that I am even happier that I live here. Larry provides humour and a bitter sweet memory to all who profess the love of country life and to the people who live there.
Book Description
The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a frank, funny, and illuminating account for anyone who fears aging but longs to grow up.At forty-four, Leah Komaiko was not aging graciously. Not that she ever has. After all, her generation expects to stay forever young. But now she feels old and empty inside. Nothing she thinks of trying (plastic surgery, a vacation, a puppy, or a new husband) can make her feel young again. Then she meets Adele---a woman who never expected to be ninety-four---alone, forgotten, and living in a nursing home.Am I Old Yet? is an inspiring memoir that takes us deep into a world where most hope never to enter and few, willingly, dare to go: the nursing home. What for Leah begins as a reluctant agreement to spend one hour a week with Adele at the California Chateau evolves into hundreds of hours. Through their visits and conversations (about aging, death, miracles, and even sex), Adele, who is completely blind, surprisingly is the one who helps Leah see the truth about growing old. With Adele as her host, Leah becomes a regular at the Chateau events: sing-a-longs, food fights in the dining room, a Halloween party (where pirates swashbuckle in wheelchairs). Gradually, her own fears of aging begin to lift as she sees that Adele--- resilient, independent, and almost embarrassingly enthusiastic---is, in many ways, younger than she is.This original and poignant book obliterates the generation gap. It shares the "coming-of-age" stories of two wonderful and flawed women, fifty years apart, who find themselves in places in their lives they never thought they'd be and in a friendship they never dreamed they'd know. Am I Old Yet? revealsthat no matter how old people are, if they have love in their lives there is only one age: Alive.AUTHORBIO: Leah Komaiko is the author of eighteen popular picture books and novels for kids, including the bestselling Annie Bananie, the Annie Bananie chapter books, and Earl's Too Cool for Me. Her work has been featured and reviewed in dozens of magazines, newspapers, and on television. She has been a guest speaker in schools across the country as well as at numerous conventions and conferences. She lives in Los Angeles, California.BACKCOVER: "Every once in a while a book drops out of the sky and lands on my 'favorites of all time' shelf. Am I Old Yet? is one such book. It reminds us of the power that life and all its wealth of experiences have to offer. Adele is a woman to be cherished, worshipped, and most of all, honored." ---Jamie Lee Curtis"In this tender, touching, and very funny memoir, Leah Komaiko illuminates the truth about living---vitality of mind and spirit is built on the bonds of love. Everyone who wants to be reminded of the miracles of friendship should read this book." ---Mary Tyler Moore"Komaiko is best at bringing to life Adele's independent mind and her determination to wrest as much life as possible out of her remaining days, as well as at pinpointing the aspects of nursing-home life that worked against Adele's fighting spirit." --Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Am I old Yet?.......2002-03-19
I am so impressed by the honesty of the author, Leah Komaiko--her fear of being old and her sense of insecurity. I am also pleased that she found a way to go through her fear. I am so sorry to know that Adele (the 94 years old lady in the book) was abandoned by her family with no particular reasons. I remember my 89 years old father told me that the worst thing to be old is... you were young not too long ago. And when you get older you would prefer to be with your family. I can imagine how Adele felt when she was left at a nursery home by herself with no visitations from her family... It is a wonderful book!
Friendship through the ages.......2000-08-28
I was touched by the honesty, simplicity and humor of Leah Komaiko's writing in this wonderful book. As a 44-year-old woman, I relate to the challenges of aging in our youth-worshipping culture. I was also struck by the ways in which the friendship between these two women progressed. There were moments when the author seemed ready to "throw in the towel," but the fact that she persisted even when things didn't go quite the way she planned was an inspiring example of how to love another human being, warts and all. I recommend this book to anyone.
Am I Old Yet?.......2000-08-27
I found this book so topical that I suggested it for my book group. We will be discussing it this fall! I think it addresses the unspoken fear of many boomers -- getting old. I took this book with me on plane trip. I found people doing double takes when they saw the title. Even our cabin attendant wanted to give me an answer to the title's question. Komaiko handles the subject with loving humor.
A Masterpiece.......2000-06-14
This is a brilliant, compassionate, funny, inspired, dedicated quick read! It is, I believe the best book about relationships I've read in a very long time. Leah Komaiko says what I think but have never been able to verbalize much less write and put out into the public! When is her next book out?
Poignant and Wise.......2000-04-07
I saw Leah Kamaiko interviewed on last Sunday's Today Show. We were also treated to footage of Leah and Adele walking and talking together. True soulmates. Seeing them reminded me of how moved I was when I read "Am I Old Yet?" the book Leah wrote so that all of us could share what these two wonderful women have learned from each other. There is only one age, alive, and that life is best lived in connection to ourselves and each other. Leah's willingness to face her fears of aging and learn from them gives gentle space for the rest of us to explore this taboo subject. For years in my psychotherapy practice I have worked with many people facing aging and mortality issues for themselves and their loved ones. "Am I Old Yet?" is poignant and wise. It illuminates while it confronts and comforts. I highly recommend this book. It is a valuable resource for our continuing collective journey.
Book Description
Am I Old Yet? is an inspiring and funny memoir of a baby boomer's journey into the belly of a beast where she most feared go-old age and ultimately, a nursing home. To overcome her mid-life crisis, Komaiko adopts a 94-year-old woman. What for Leah begins as a reluctant agreement to spend one hour a week with Adele, at the California Chateau, evolves into hundreds of hours. Through their visits and conversations (about aging, death, miracles and even sex) Adele, who is completely blind, surprisingly is the one who helps Leah see the truth about growing old-no matter how old people are, if they have love in their lives there is only one age. Alive.

A unexpected surprize.......2006-07-01
I was buying this book for a dear friend and decided to read it first before giving it to her. This book was such a quick read.
I could'nt seem to put it down. It was light hearted and funny at times and deep and introspective at others. This is a great book about friendship and how it affects our lives.
I really enjoyed this book. At times I was laughing out loud.
I know my best friend will enjoy it too.

Sensitive and yet fun (that is if you like purple).......2000-10-26
This is a beautifully crafted book of verses
I purchased this book for my elderly mother as it typified her approach to life. She would be forever quoting sections from the book as her behaviour reflected a phrase or section from it. (and yes - she did wear purple!)
It is a gentle reflection on ageing and how too often in our younger years we are driven by fad and fashion. I would thouroughly recommend it to anyone who has elderly parents - and to the parents themselves.
