Born in 1920, Helen Thomas was one of United Press International's very few female journalists for years. She promoted herself to UPI's White House Press Corps in 1960 ("I just started showing up every day") and has reported on eight administrations. Her episodic, old-fashioned autobiography contains anecdotes about each president, their first ladies, and their staff. Her stories are often funny, and she doesn't mind when the joke's on her: "Isn't there a war somewhere we can send her to?" Colin Powell inquired after being buttonholed at a party; President Carter's mother said the greatest lesson she learned in 80 years was, "Never to open my mouth around Helen Thomas." She's also fair: even the press secretaries get balanced treatment, though Thomas criticizes the White House's growing efforts to "manage" the news. (Her most affectionate political portrait is of the unmanageable Watergate wife Martha Mitchell.) Thomas pays loving tribute to her parents, hardworking, religious Syrian immigrants, and to her late husband, Associated Press reporter Doug Cornell, but she keeps the focus on the people and public events she covered. Scrupulously impartial when reporting the news, she feels free here to be bluntly opinionated, especially in her unrepentant advocacy of the media's responsibility to ask uncomfortable questions, even when the public condemns them as intrusive. --Wendy Smith

From the earliest age, Helen Thomas wanted to be a reporter. Raised in Depression-era Detroit, she worked her way to Washington after college and, unlike other women reporters who gave up their jobs to returning veterans, parlayed her copy aide job at the Washington Daily News into a twelve-year stint as a radio news writer for UPI, covering such beats as the Department of Justice and other federal agencies. Assigned to the White House press corps in 1961, Thomas was the first woman to close a press conference with "Thank you, Mr. President, " and has covered every administration since Kennedy's. Along the way, she broke down barriers against women in the national media, becoming the first female president of the White House Correspondents Association, the first female officer of the National Press Club, and the first woman member and later president of the Gridiron Club. In this revealing memoir which includes hundreds of anecdotes, Thomas evaluates the enormous changes that Watergate brought and how they have affected every president since Nixon. Providing a unique view of the Last four decades of presidential history, Front Row at the White House offers a seasoned study of the relationship between the chief executive officer and the press -- a relationship that is sometimes uneasy, sometimes playful, yet always integral to democracy.

4 out of 5 stars "Mr. President?".......2007-10-13

If you've ever wondered about the woman who for years asked the first question at presidential news conferences and also ended each one, then this memoir will be entertaining. Thomas had a long career and got to know every president since JFK pretty well, or so you'd think from this book which is chock full of interesting anecdotes and opinions. It is a bit repetitious and would have benefited mightily from tighter editing. One wonders if the publisher was a little too reverential to use the red pencil. Somewhere along the line, UPI, her employer, lost a lot of its power and impact, due to business turmoil. Still, Thomas soldiered on. She doesn't say much about UPI in the memoir, probably because she's still working, though for Hearst. If you follow the journalism biz, you'll want to read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-01-09

The book is a true reflection of who Helen is and her commitment to the ideals and responsibility of being a "reporter". Whether or not you agree with Helen's political views; it is hard to argue with her views regardig the responsibility of the press corps.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible life...........2006-07-16

It's one thing to be a history buff and read about events of our country and the world. It's another to live it. Thomas has been an active part of almost every major historical event our country has seen for decades. It's a life the rest of us could only dream about. I thank her for giving me the opportunity to read about the behind the scenes events that have made up our history. The writing is very newspaper-like ie short and to the point. It's perfect for the busy adult who wants to pick it up for short spans.

1 out of 5 stars Everthing you didn't want to know about Helen and very little about anything else.......2006-02-18

I was looking forward to reading this book but was sadly very disappointed. Helen Thomas takes great pains not to rock the boat. She is in a position to make intelligent insider analysises, but she chooses instead to sit on the fence. She seems tickled pink that various presidents noticed her! And her birthday!!!! Sheesh!

4 out of 5 stars white house years.......2005-01-25

I wanted to give this book at 5 star rating but the first two thirds of the book are written too much in the style of a quick note taking journalist and I found the writing needing of more narrative. The ' I was there and they thought I was a female tiger amongst men' message over and over again gets tired after a while. The photos of the author with the presidents are ok but Ms. Thomas should have included those moments in history that she was a part of, Nixon's resignation, Clinton intern scandal, Reagan--Iran-Contra, etc. Ms. Thomas' final third of the book is excellent. The writing changes. She elaborates and the book excels.

Book Description

Based on new interviews and never-before-seen archival materials, Woodward and Bernstein takes a fresh, thought-provoking look at this unlikely journalistic duo. Thrown together by fate or luck, Woodward and Bernstein changed the face of journalism and the American presidency. For the first time, Shepard separates myth from reality as she traces the lives of the iconic journalists before and after Watergate.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating Even Without Cooperation.......2007-04-02

The irony here is that neither Woodward nor Bernstein would speak with the author, despite having made millionaires out of themselves over the past 30-plus years by insinuating themselves into other peoples' lives and putting everything they've ever been told by anyone about anyone else between book covers. A bit of a double standard. Still, this look at how Watergate affected these two reporters is an engrossing read and a first class research job. Many many intriguing revelations for anyone who follows journalism and those who still like to read about the Watergate scandal. It's all tied up with a red bow because of the revelation in 2005 that Deep Throat was former FBI official Mark Felt, a secret that Woodstein kept religiously for three decades. Woodward's latest books on Bush are a bit boring, but that doesn't come across here. His Belushi expose remains his best, but this book points out that Woodward never again went outside politics in his reporting. Too bad. He should.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting for journalism junkies, but sporadic.......2007-03-11

Parts of this were interesting and entertaining in adding to my knowledge about Woodward and Bernstein and I indeed recommend it, but with some stipulations. I had thought it would be mostly about what happened to them AFTER the Watergate coverage, but it mostly goes back over the Watergate coverage itself and then speeds through the rest of their careers/lives. The Watergate material is interesting, but I often felt it was more refresher course than revelation, and that I might as well be reading All the President's Men again. The internal newsroom politics material and some additional info about the two men and their lives are very interesting, though, especially about the reaction they got after the book and movie came out. She was too professorial at times here and quoting from other books and Halberstam's tapes for Powers That Be, for example, gets a little curious. I wish she had trusted her interpretive skills more and gone with that. Later in the book, she touches on the big issue of Woodward's later work -- his sourcing and omniscient approach -- but doesn't try hard enough to decide whether he crosses the line or not. And the way she fast forwards to the end, you almost get the feeling that this was written in 1995 or something, went unpublished, and got second life when Mark Felt's family pushed through the Deep Throat disclosure.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Watergate Addicts.......2007-02-12

A MUST-READ FOR WATERGATE JUNKIES! We have all followed Woodward and Bernstein's careers through newspaper articles and the occa¬sional TV interview. Now Alicia Shepard has gathered all those data into a book about what Watergate did for them...and to them. It is a fascinating tale of young reporters who got sudden fame and fortune early in their lives, and how Woodward prospered while Bernstein foundered.
Shepard had access to their entire Watergate archives, and my only criticism of the book is its liberal quotations of that material. When "letters and telegrams" pour in from all over the country to them, it is not necessary to quote from so many. It slows down the narrative and you will find yourself skipping over most of these repetitive passages. All in all, it is a 266 page book that would have a much easier read at about 225. But if you love Water¬gate and all that came in its wake, pick up this book and read about how it careened the careers of these little reports to un¬known heights and depths.

4 out of 5 stars The story behind the story (tellers).......2006-12-16

When the five burglars bungled their bugging mission at the Watergate in June of 1972, they unwittingly changed not only our country's political history, but its journalistic one as well. Alicia Shepard has masterfully chronicled the successes and struggles, both professional and personal, of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the men who blew the lid off Watergate, in this informative and enjoyable book. She recounts their investigation of the scandal, illuminating a new perspective through extensive interviews with their editors. She pulls no punches in exposing their triumphs and their failures in the ensuring three decades, in their reporting, their marriages, and even their relationship with each other. The result is an eminently readable book that will leave you feeling as if you have finally gotten the inside scoop on the men whose names are synonymous with Watergate.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive "Woodstein" Biography.......2006-12-11

Alicia C. Shepard has written what should become the definitive biography of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Her book is scholarly without being pedantic and revelatory without being salacious. She skillfully shows how Watergate affected not only history, but journalism, and the lives of the two young men who doggedly pursued the truth. This book is must reading for anyone who wants to become a journalist, or who cares about what journalists do.

    Book Description

The heart of New York City's Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park has been a vital public space for nearly two centuries. Lined by elegant townhouses, anchored by Stanford White's iconic Washington Arch, and used by students and professionals, dog walkers and musicians, chess players and toddlers, the park is both an oasis from and an ideal of urban life. Synonymous with the city's artistic identity, the park has also witnessed waves of political and social unrest, and served as a focal point for contentious debates about the future of urban development. This rich and colorful history is captivatingly told by Emily Kies Folpe in It Happened on Washington Square.

Farmed by New Amsterdam's freed African slaves in the seventeenth century, the park was used as a potter's field and dueling ground in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War and then converted into a parade ground for the city's volunteer militia in 1826. Since the 1830s, when it formed the nucleus of an upscale community, Washington Square has been an incubator for American art and a haven for writers, painters, sculptors, and architects. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the area began to attract the artists and political radicals--from John Reed to the Beats--who gave the Square a counter-cultural aura it still possesses. In recent decades, the Square's residents have united against such threats to their neighborhood as the urban redevelopment proposed by Robert Moses and the expansion of New York University. Illustrated with a remarkable selection of historic images, It Happened on Washington Square explains why the survival of this unique public space is so important.

5 out of 5 stars It Happened on Washington Square.......2006-01-16

I lived for a time, in the Village, during the 60`s, at times in a haze. Therefore I never got to know the Square and her glorious history,so this book gave me an insight to a wonderful place and the many historical events that took place there. It is well written, and the reader knows, the writer has a very close connection to the Village and the Square and Her people. G.F.St.J. Connecticut.

    5 out of 5 stars lively history.......2002-12-06

This is a lively history of Washington Square Park from its beginnings to its present embodiment. It is also a pocket history of some of the notabale events in NYC itself. The book is written in a highly readable style and filled with pictures tracing the history of the park. A veritable who's who of NYC politicians and artists parade through the pages illustrating the central role played by the park during NYC's development.
Dr. Folpe thorough research illuminates the text without bogging down in acedemic trivia. This is a fascinating history for anyone who loves New York City or is curious as to how it became the art center of the country.
I would recommend this book as a most enjoyable and informative read.

    5 out of 5 stars a wonderful history.......2002-11-24

Folpe spent years going through archives and talking to locals to unearth a detailed history of Washington Square. Her research paid off. This is technically an academic book, but the prose is so engaging and lively that anyone who has even a remote interest in Washington Square will enjoy this.

        Book Description

George Washington comes alive in this fascinating activity book that introduces the leader to whom citizens turned again and again—to lead them through eight long years of war, to guide them as they wrote a new Constitution, and to act as the new nation’s first executive leader. Children will learn how, shortly after his death in 1799, people began transforming George Washington from a man into a myth. But Washington was a complex individual who, like everyone, had hopes and fears, successes and failures. In his early 20s, for instance,Washington’s actions helped plunge Great Britain and France into war. He later fought for liberty and independence, yet owned slaves himself (eventually freeing them in his will). This book weaves a rich tapestry of Washington’s life, allowing kids to connect with his story in 21 hands-on projects based on his experiences and the times in which he lived. Children will learn how to tie a cravat, write with a quill pen, follow animal tracks, sew a lady’s cap, plant a garden, roll a beeswax candle, play a game of Quoits, and make a replica of Washington’s commander-in-chief flag. The text includes a time line, glossary, websites, travel resources, and a reading list for further study.

In Susan Isaac's Long Time No See, Courtney Logan, former investment analyst, devoted mother, and Long Island housewife, leaves her home on Halloween night for a quick trip to the grocery store. Five months later, her badly decomposed body is found floating in the backyard pool, concealed by the pool cover.

Enter Judith Singer, who helped find a murderer in Isaac's 1978 bestseller, Compromising Positions. Something about the Logan case doesn't make sense to Judith, and she becomes so engrossed in the mystery that she actually knocks on the grieving husband's door and offers to help exonerate him. Long Time No See draws on the best of the light, character-driven mysteries, like those by Janet Evanovich and Mary Daheim. Isaac's first- person heroine is impulsive enough to get herself into trouble, yet thoughtful enough to invite confidences. And her voice is appealingly funny and honest. "Since becoming a widow," she reflects, when faced with a twist in her investigation,

I'd tried hard not to indulge in the lonely person's Happy Hour: talking to oneself. About a year earlier, in the drugstore, I found myself befuddled, dithering between a condom rack and a display of batteries, and was startled when I heard my own loud voice demanding: 'Why am I here?' But now I gave in and had a chat with me.

Although clever and well-written, the novel's real strength lies in its characterization and in Isaac's leisurely unfolding of the implausible dark side of the perky blonde murder victim. This is a welcome outing from a deservedly popular writer. --Regina Marler

                Book Description

It's been twenty years, and Judith's life has definitely changed. Now a history professor and a widow, she hasn't seen Nelson Sharpe of the Nassau County Police Department in all that time. But she still can't get her one-time lover out of her head. Her life takes an unexpected turn, however, when former investment banker turned suburban mommy extraordinaire Courtney Logan vanishes from Long Island into thin air.

Everyone suspects husband, Greg, the darkly handsome son of flashy Long Island mobster Fancy Phil Lowenstein. Ever the good neighbor, Judith offers her services to Greg, but he shows her the door, thinking she's just a nut. His father, however, isn't so sure -- he just may have other plans for the wily Judith...

                1 out of 5 stars Audio Awful.......2006-08-01

I regret that I did not read a previous review that mentioned how awful the audio version is. The Author should not have been the Narrator. It was difficult enough listening to her normal Brooklyn accent but her mimicking other voices was painful. Her Southern Belle accent sounded like a Neanderthal (truly). As far as the story goes, her amateur detective has the pool-cleaning man from the house where a murder was committed come and give her an estimate on having a pool installed so that she can question him (I am not aware that pool cleaners also handle pool sales.) She also gets too involved in details (like the description of a lamp shade). Her attempt at humor is having a crime figure named "Fancy Phil" - gee, wonder how she came up with that. I could not finish the first disc and have decided to order satellite radio for my car to prevent future mistakes like this one.

3 out of 5 stars Where HAVE You Been!.......2005-05-25

My favorite newspaper, Nashville TENNESSEAN promotes Ms. Isaacs as: "Reading (Susan) Isaacs is like taking a good friend to lunch. (In fact, I saw a man reading a paperback at lunch in public just yesterday!) "You get funny observations on contemporary life, great gossip, and a great time."

Her best-selling COMPROMISING POSITIONS (1985) was made into a movie starring Susan Sarandon and Raul Julia. Judith was the sleuth and now, twenty years later, her neighbor has been found dead in the backyard 'covered' pool. The perky blonde victim, mother of two, had just suddenly disappeared on Halloween Night and the body discovered five months later. Judith sets out to exonerate the husband, son of a gangster. He does not trust her.

She is now a history professor and a widow. Enter former lover, Nelson Sharpe of the police department of Nassau County. Sparks fly, as no one ever forget her first love.

She has written RED WHITE AND BLUE, MAGIC HOUR, ALMOST PARADISE, and CLOSE RELATIONS. This is one of her best.

1 out of 5 stars Book OK, audio edition terrible.......2004-08-17

This is the first Susan Isaacs book I have read. I listened to the abridged audio CD version of the book. Ms. Isaacs is the narrator herself. It is terrible. I am unable to concentrate on the story - I am so distracted by her voice. She tries to do "accents" of some of the characters - all the accents turn out to be caricatures - of southern accents, of Eastern European, of Brooklyn, etc. It is almost unlistenable. Do yourself a favor, Ms. Isaacs - save the narration for the professionals!

4 out of 5 stars pulled me in like a fish to the bait.......2004-02-13

I really enjoyed this book. It took me a little bit to get into the story but when I did, I kept on reading until I finished the book.

Courtney Logan, who retired from a financial occupation to stay home with her family and, as a sideline, had developed a small business of her own, has disappeared. She went to get some apples and although her vehicle was found in the garage she disappeared. Five months later her body is found in the pool under the pool liner with two bullet wounds to her head.

Judith, who is a history teacher and had lost her husband two years earlier, is a curious person. Since the loss of her husband she has been at loose endes and finds she needs something to give her life meaning. Years ago she had helped solve a mystery and felt the same stirrings in her to help get to the bottom of this one. During the other case, she had an affair with a cop for six months and then broke it off because they didn't want to hurt their families and now he, Nelson Sharpe, is back on the scene. They still have that old attraction to each other but will they follow their desires?

The police are looking at the husband but she doesn't think he did it and goes to him, Greg Logan, to offer her assistance. He runs her off, but his father, "Fancy Phil" Lowenstein, a mob boss, finds out and asks her to help. Greg had changed his name so that people wouldn't know who his father was and be judged because of his father's occupation. He was trying to lead a clean, honest life.

Judith questions several of Courtney's friends and acquaintances
and finds a wide variety of descriptions of what kind of person Courtney was like. Each person seemed to see her a little differently. Who was she? Judith keeps digging for the truth and finds more questions than answers.

She portrays her characters in a realistic manner with a good dose of humor, by which I mean, they are colorful characters who could have had better morals, but people we see all around us at times. Hopefully not as frequently as we read in the book, but then this is only a book.

I highly recommend the book. It is very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Judith Singer Is Back...As Witty, And Ingenious As Ever!.......2003-07-28

I am a big fan of Susan Isaacs. Her wit and wonderful characters are always winners in my book! I think Ms. Isaacs was at her best with "Compromising Positions," and "Almost Paradise." So I was happy to pick up a copy of "Long Time No See," which reintroduces her readers to Judith Singer, from "Compromising Positions," twenty years after the original intro. Apart from my eagerness to read this new novel, and to find out how Judith has fared, I looked forward to discover how Judith has aged, being a contemporary of hers, and to see if we still have things in common. ;)

Judith, now a widow for two years, has earned her doctorate in history and teaches at a local upscale college. She has mourned her husband, who though not the love of her life, was a much loved companion. She hasn't seen the love of her life, Homicide Detective Nelson Sharpe for twenty years. At their last meeting they made a mutual vow never to meet again. Nelson, however, lurks in Judith's mind, never far from her thoughts.

The now Dr. Singer has never lost the "detective bug" either, which she picked up in "Compromising Positions." When a local mother of two, Courtney Logan, suddenly disappears, the mystery peaks her interest. When Courtney's body is found, weeks later, in the family's covered pool, Judith's long suppressed detective instincts, chomp at the bit! Desperate for accurate information about the homicide, Judith actually knocks at the Logan's door and questions the uncommunicative, grieving husband, Greg Logan. What chutzpah! Logan's father, the renowned, very gauche, and dangerous gangster, Philip "Fancy Phil" Lowenstein, hears about Judith's visit, and pays her a visit himself. Yoiks! Actually, Lowenstein hires our "would-be sleuth" informally, to see what she can discover. The Nassau Police believe that his son Greg is the murderer, and have not made much of an effort to find another perp. "Fancy Phil" remembers Judith's effectiveness from "Compromising Position" days and hopes she will come up with some helpful clues...or maybe an answer to "who done it."

The mystery is a good one with some surprises. Romantic sparks fly with the reappearance of Nelson Sharpe. And Ms. Isaacs' wit is as sharp as ever. There is nothing deep here; no gripping suspense, nor complex characters or plot. "Long Time No See" is a fun and entertaining read, however. And if you're a Susan Isaacs fan, you'll love it!

                Book Description

Long Time No See is an inspiring story, but Beth Finke does not aim to inspire. With unflinching candor and acerbic wit, she chronicles the progress of the juvenile diabetes that left her blind at the age of twenty-six as well as the seemingly endless spiral of adversity that followed. First she was forced out of her professional job. Then she bore a multiply handicapped son. But she kept moving forward, confronting marital and financial problems and persevering through a rocky training period with a seeing-eye dog.

Finke's life story and her commanding knowledge of her situation give readers a clear understanding of diabetes, blindness, and the issues faced by parents of children with significant disabilities. Because she has taken care to include accurate medical information as well as personal memoir, Long time No See serves as an excellent resource for others in similar situations and for professionals who deal with disabled adults or children.

5 out of 5 stars Beth Finke was a personal inspiration in my life.......2006-04-21

I knew Beth Finke growing up in Illinois. I was a teenager when she needed a baby sitter for her disabled son, and she was associated with the foundation where I lived and worked. I not only have very fond memories of Beth, but also her delightful son and her first seeing-eye dog Pandora.

As a young teenager, to meet a woman as bright, witty, and brave as Beth was a life lesson that stays with me to this day. I was so struck by Beth's outlook on life that I decided to make my High School final project a video documentary of her daily life (sorry, it is not available outside of the local TV station's archives). Now, over a decade later, Beth continues to be an inspiration to me and my wife (who also knew Beth), and I am so very glad that others have seen the same in her memoirs.

If you want to be inspired by a life that may have been struck by disabilities, but not dampened by them, you will not be disappointed. While perhaps an odd suggestion to most, I especially suggest this book to those who have sensitive teenagers in their homes - it will put them on the right track towards respect, humor, and a positive outlook on life.

5 out of 5 stars I read it in three hours.......2003-07-04

_Long Time, No See_ is the memoir of a woman whose diabetes caused her to become blind at the beginnning of her relationship with the man that became her husband. Beth chronicles her life since the lights went out in a funny, poignant style, bringing humor to stories about her seeing eye dogs and not wallowing in sentimentality over her love for her husband and disabled son. But for me, the best part of the book was reading about the resources and adaptive measures available to blind people. I've been an avid reader since I was two and it's always been one of my greatest fears that I might someday lose my vision, but Beth's book is both an inspiration and a practical guide to what's available. Good work.

                5 out of 5 stars Reality check!.......2003-06-18

Beth Finke's _Long Time, No See_ is a lively and very real story of a modern American woman's life--the ups and downs, the tragedies and belly laughs. Her honesty is palpable and her humor always engaged. Blindness, birth defects, medical red tape, bureaucratic Catch 22's, problems in relationships--this woman has met them all straight on and remained real and honest and entertaining. You won't be able to stop reading this personal story! Guaranteed to give you both grins and tears. Highly recommended even if you know nothing about diabetes or blindness. (P. S. Do not confuse it with a recent novel by the same title.)

I read this book on an airplane flight and didn't even think about how my knees were jammed into the seat in front of me. Some of my fellow passengers were probably curious if they noticed that I laughed out loud (the pinto beans..) and cried at different points. Simply an amazing, funny and inspiring autobiography.

This was NOT a return of the deaf man. (What book was he reading??)

I won't give any plot away, as that would spoil the fun. I've read a dozen or more of the 87th precinct books, and this one was rather weak. I get frustrated with books that rely on a gimmick that gets revealed in the last 5 pages. I think that a novel should be rewarding throughout, giving out nuggets of the solution along the way, instead of making it impossible for the reader to figure out until the author pulls back the curtain at the very end.
