Still seeking to learn more about FDR in a condensed version.......2007-07-30
I liked this book by Miller, but not as much as his book on Theodore Roosevelt. I also thought this book was better than the one by Roy Jenkins(Franklin Delano Roosevelt). F.D.R. is a long (500+pages of small type-in paperback)read; at times it was very slow and much too detailed (his early life), while the pace was much too fast and abrupt on his final years in office and as commander-in-chief. I came away with knowing more about FDR through the description of his friends, but still unfamiliar with what he actually was thinking during these tramatic times before and during WWII.
The Pop Biography of FDR.......2000-08-28
This is not a bad book, but is a breezy and non-scholarly look at the most important President of the 20th century. Miller's research is haphazard and he puts too much weight on witnesses who were unreliable and discredited by better historians. Miller grossly exaggerates the extent of FDR's womanizing in the 1910's and bases his assumptions on a witness who is a proven liar. A more methodical writer would have avoided this mistake.
Similarly, his take on the FDR-Eleanor relationship is also wide of the mark and inaccurate. His anti-Eleanor bias is evident and he makes several misstatements of fact. Blanche Wiesen-Cook's recent two-volume Eleanor books are the better and definitive treatment.
If you are serious about FDR, you will rely upon the superior books on him by Kenneth Davis, Geoffrey Ward and Frank Freidel.

Product Description
While African Americans managed to emerge from chattel slavery and the oppressive decades that followed with great strength and resiliency, they did not emerge unscathed. Slavery produced centuries of physical, psychological and spiritual injury. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and opens up the discussion of how we can use the strengths we have gained to heal.

A Necessary Accounting.......2007-08-07
This book is a healing work for any Blacks who have wondered about behaviors that seem natural to us and so different to whites. It is a history lesson a soothing salve and a book of hope for those in despair over the rising violence in inner cities as well as negative lifestyles. It is without equivocation a tour de force!!!
Clear Analysis of the Situation of African Americans Today.......2007-08-04
This book brings the story of African Americans into sharp focus relative to the diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) amongst people who were enslaved. The argument is that slavery has resulted in a complex pattern of symptoms amongst the descendants of said enslaved people called 'Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome' (PTSS). PTSD was highlighted following 911. It was also outlined as a result of events such as the war and/or the holocaust. In fact, the thesis of this book is that, similar to findings for holocaust victims, not only did American chattel slavery produce devistatingly traumatic experiences for the enslaved, but the responses and defense mechanisms developed by the enslaved (both functional and dysfunctional) over the over 200 years of slavery were passed down to their descendants. As a result, people of African American descent STILL feel the effects of slavery/Jim Crow (American Apartheid) in their outlook and lives (as do whites in reverse). Examples of responses to PTSS include:
-Vacant Esteem (feelings of worthlessness/depression)
-Rage/Frustration
-Internalized Racism (emphathizing with the values of the oppressive group).
Awareness of this legacy is the first step in healing from it. Leary presents several ways of viewing approaches to healing once African Americans have come to terms with the legacy of shared trauma. The key in her mind is that we remember that Justice inevitably prevails. That we need to focus on healing the wounded aspects of our cultural outlook as individuals and to support each other in doing so as a community. This book is a great academically oriented (well researched) lead in to the more practice oriented 'Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder' which includes practical, step by step game plans on how to address and diagnose this complex phenomenon amongst one's students and/or patients.

Book Description
We admire these men for their greatness, but the truth is Augustine grappled with sexual passions. Martin Luther struggled to control his tongue. John Calvin fought the battle of faith with worldly weapons.
Yet each man will always be remembered for the messages he declared—messages that still resound today. John Piper explores each of these men’s lives, integrating Augustine’s delight in God with Luther’s emphasis on the Word and Calvin’s exposition of Scripture. Through their strengths and struggles we can learn how to live better today. When we consider their lives, we behold the glory and majesty of God and find power to overcome our weaknesses.
If ever you are complacent about sin, if ever you lose the joy of Jesus Christ, if ever you are dulled by the world’s influence, let the lives of these men help you recapture the wonder of God. Book 1 in The Swans Are Not Silent series.

Giants of the Faith.......2007-08-19
The books in the Swan series are taken from a conference for pastors, where Dr. Piper presents these biographies. The biographies are never meant to be exhaustic treatment, but tailored to encourage pastors.
I find these brief biographies to be so wonderful and often whet the appetite for more. One can only be encourage and motivated to do more for the Lord, having bathed the soul in these well-written, tailored sketches.
Outstanding book, outstanding series!.......2007-04-05
Incredible. This is the first book of a series of four that Piper wrote to expose this generation to some of the great saints of the past. I started by reading book three, moved to book four, just completed the first and am looking forward to diving into the second book to finish the series. This book was very powerful, enlightening and challenging. As a Reformed believer, I've grown up with a tremendous appreciation of Luther and Calvin, but knew little about the incredible influence of Augustine. As I've matured in my walk and the more I read, the more I see the fruits of Augustine's thoughts in the works of so many great thinkers and writers that followed. Piper's expose on Augustine gave me an even greater appreciation for God's sovereign grace in the life of Augustine and for how God used him like the source lake from which mighty rivers of knowledge and grace have flowed down throughout history.
I think what I enjoyed most about the book is the concept that the central theme that connected these three men was their love for God's Word - they digested it daily, they wrestled with it, they sought to squeeze out every truth that could be known about God Himself from His divine and inspired Word. Their lives were devoted to the study of Scripture and to the accurate and passionate teaching of God's Word to the people. While each lived in tumultuous times, it was amazing to read about how diligent they were with their time and how much they accomplished without any of the modern conveniences that we enjoy today.
I would highly recommend this book and the entire series to all followers of Christ to gain an even greater appreciation for God and how He has used ordinary men throughout history to accomplish extraordinary things. The books are easy to read and relatively short, but are packed with great encouragement for every believer.
Listen to the voices of Christian history..........2006-04-16
The Legacy of Sovereign Joy is Book One of John Piper's series The Swans are Not Silent. Each book of the series (of which there is currently four) collects three of the biographical lectures Piper gave at the annual Bethlehem Conference for Pastors over the past two decades. When Augustine resigned as Bishop of Hippo it was said that the "swan is silent." Piper aims to show that the swans, those in our heritage of Christians throughout the centuries, are in fact not silent.
This book expounds on the lives and thoughts of Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. It begins with an introduction about "savoring the sovereignty of grace in the lives of flawed saints." Piper explains that each of these men "had this in common: they experienced, and built their lives and ministries on, the reality of God's omnipotent grace." (18) Noting some of the flaws of each of these men, Piper believes that "the glory of God, however dimly, is mirrored in the flawed lives of his faithful servants." (37)
Each chapter is about half biography and half theological survey and averages 34 pages. There is a pattern to each chapter: after a brief introduction John Piper provides a biographical sketch and then brings out a prominent theme from author's theology. For Augustine, the theme is sovereign joy, for Luther it is sacred study, and for Calvin it is the divine majesty of the Word.
After these chapters, Piper concludes with four lessons we can learn from the "flawed saints." "1) Do not be paralyzed by your weaknesses and flaws... 2) In the battle against sin and surrender, learn the secret of sovereign joy... 3) Supernatural change comes from seeing Christ in his sacred Word... 4) Therefore, let us exult the exposition of the truth of the Gospel and herald the glory of Christ for the joy of all peoples." (143-148)
It is evident throughout the book that John Piper has done his homework; quoting often from primary texts and secondary sources. While there may be some over simplification in regard to the theological themes, Piper's points are nonetheless insightful and practical. Each chapter serves as a great introduction to the lives and thoughts of these Christian men. The Legacy of Sovereign Joy provides a stimulating resource for those looking to discover some of the motivating themes of the Reformed tradition.
Concise but comprehensive.......2005-09-15
Concise but comprehensive might sound like a contradiction but I couldn't think of any other way to describe it. John Piper really introduced me to Jonathan Edwards, and between the two of them I would say that no other author has had as much of an impact upon me in the last few years as these two. Now Piper introduces us to Augustine, Luther, and Calvin also. This is the first book in a series of three and well worth the investment. I read it in my spare time in just 1 week, have the second book ready to go, but regret not purchasing the third at the same time. Piper's strength is not only in presenting one very compelling argument about the triumph of God's grace (or "Sovereign Joy"), but to do it by presenting numerous facets of the work of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, which are easy to follow and understand, gives an excellent overview of their lives and ministries, and which leaves you wanting to (and feeling confident of being able to) read from the original sources. Every page was a gem. Be warned though, I got about 10 pages into the book then realised my mistake ... I should have read this book with a pencil and note pad in hand! There are so many great quotes from Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, not to mention Piper himself that you'll want to write some of them down to chew over later (or file away for sermon illustrations). This is an easy read and a great introduction the some major figures in church history, not to mention excellent food for the soul. In a day when people are so biblically illiterate as well as ignorant (or contemptible) of church history, this book demonstrates that our impoverishment is foolish and unnecessary. We need more books like this! I would have given it 6 stars if I could, simply on price, readability, and content alone.
Inspiration for New Christian Leaders.......2005-04-16
As you can see by the book's subtitle, this little book has three biographical pieces on well known historical Christians. Though most Christians know the names of these men, few know any more than that. So this book serves as a useful introduction to their lives and work.
But this book offers more that just a general introduction. These essays were originally conference talks given by the author to an audience of pastors. So there is a specific theme and purpose to them beyond summary historical information. Lessons from the lives of these men are drawn out to inspire and equip a new generation of Christian leaders.
I was personally most inspired by the chapter on Martin Luther. I was greatly convicted to be more diligent in the study of God's word. But all three essays were interesting and provoked personal reflection.
Book Description
In this personal history of the Negro Leagues, Stanley Glenn gives an intimate and in-depth look at the daily trials and tribulations of a Negro League Baseball player. With wisdom, wit and perspective, Glenn recalls the indignities he and his teammates suffered during the days of Jim Crow, a time when they were denied gas for their vehicles or even a decent place to stay as they went "barnstorming" around the country, playing against and alongside some of the greatest baseball players of all time.
Glenn's story illuminates the strength and determination of black ball players. In spite of the forces against them, they persevered for love of the game. And despite the adversities these men faced, they enjoyed the journey and came away with treasured memories and lifelong friendships. Through his blend of humorous anecdotes, inspiring words of wisdom, and colorful imagery, Mr. Glenn wonderfully conveys the bittersweet paradox that was the Negro League Baseball experience.

2nd in a Trilogy - The Moorehouse Legacy.......2006-12-20
Joy Moorehouse grew up knowing that she probably would never have the things she wants - namely her neighbor,Gray Bennett, and a life of her own designing dresses. When Joy's parents died, her older sister took over the running of the family bread & breakfast, leaving Joy to take over the care of their grandmother, who has dementia. With the family barely holding on, Joy can only yearn for Gray Bennett, a rich, political consultant, who she has loved for years.
Gray, on the other hand, has noticed Joy, but believes she is too innocent, too young for him. Gray has had a pretty terrible family life, with his mother running around with every available man, and sometimes even putting Gray in the position of having to warn her when his father was coming home. Because of his mother, Gray really has very little use for women. Add his early childhood experiences to the cutthroat life Gray leads in Washington, D.C., and you have a recipe for a hard, uncaring cynic.
This second book in the Moorehouse legacy reminded me more of J. R. Ward's writing than the first book, but despite being well-written and interesting, I grew tired of Gray's internal whining and needless jealousy. At first it made the romantic conflict very believable, but after a while you wished he would just get over it or move on. Regardless, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary romances.
Moorehouse Legacy.......2006-11-12
Ms Bird has written another excellant series. Has strong characters that carry from one book to the next. Whether she is writing as Jessia Bird or JR Ward, she keeps her readers coming back for more,

I find myself looking to do more fun things with my kids........1999-03-18
I have always considered myself a fairly "fun" dad. Upon reading Legacy of joy the Lord has opened my eyes to so many other ways to enjoy my children, just by being happier in my responses to them. My wife and I have both noticed more laughter around the house and less television just by changing my attitude to one of joy and laughter instead of the rule maker of the house. God bless Mike and Norm.
IF you are a Dad,..... Get this book now!.......1998-11-05
In all seriousness, I can not think of one reason for a father not to fork out the $11.00 for this book!
If the writings of Mike and Norm stir only one thought it will be "Dads,... think about who you are, how you are blessed by your children and for Pete's sake,... do your best to bless them in return." What's more,.. is the book gives example after example of "Pro Dads". Dads that have done parenting well, men who are easy to admire and you can not help but want to emulate their wisdom in parenting! What a drink of cool water! In this time of ,... uh,.... less than emulatable (is that a word?)leadership in our country. (how's that for political correctness?)

Faith is Good.......1999-12-25
Anselm shows clearly in this splendid book on the religion and spirituality of this world that Faith is indeed truly Joyful. He uses the most visual images to prove the fun and happiness that is stored on the very batteries of Faith, the thing that drives our very Churches and Temples of various religions. A great read, I find best red whilst listening to Richard Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto. A true masterpiece of spiritual enlightenment.
Product Description
Dinah's Lament studies the ways Christians have read six biblical narratives about sexual violence, using biblical commentary, homilies, and devotional writings as a window into the history of the church's attitudes about rape. Schroeder analyzes the patterns of Christian interpretation ... from the early church through the Reformation, and shows that traditions of interpretation are often more disturbing and horrifying than the texts themselves. Her work raises important questions about the way Christian readers continue to shield the Bible from criticism and to reinforce patterns of subjugation, silencing, and violence against women.
An introduction addresses the physical, emotional, and social effects of rape and sexual violence on women in the early church, Middle Ages, and Reformation, and summarizes Christian patterns of interpretation including allegorical, moral, and literal- historical approaches to the Bible. Subsequent chapters discuss early Christian accounts in which virgin martyrs were divinely protected from rape; interpretations of Genesis 34 that effectively blamed Dinah for her own rape (with the remarkable exception of Martin Luther); the importance of Christian voices, especially medieval women like Hildegard of Bingen and Hrotswitha of Gandersheim, that insisted on the innocence of rape victims and lamented the violation of women's bodies; and more.
