Book Description
When British women demanded the vote in the years before the First World War, they promised to use political rights to remake their country and their world. This is the story of Eleanor Rathbone, the woman who best fulfilled that pledge. Rathbone cut her political teeth in the suffrage movement in Liverpool, spent two decades crafting social reforms for poor women and children, and was for seventeen years their advocate in the House of Commons. She also played a critical role in imperial policymaking and in the opposition to appeasement. In the last decade of her life she sought to rescue Spanish republicans and Jews threatened by Hitler's rise to power. In this important book, Susan Pedersen illuminates both the public and private sides of Rathbone's life while restoring her to her rightful place as the most sophisticated feminist thinker and most effective British woman politician of the first half of the twentieth century.

Good way to introduce the "birds and the bees".......2007-09-01
My son and I had the best laughs reading this book; somewhat embarrasing at time but it was all out there, he was able to ask questions and it was a great way to discuss these things with him as it is with any child. I highly recommend this book for 9 or 10 year olds if your ready to discuss such things with them.
Offers too much detail in my opinion.......2007-08-23
Although I believe this book may be suitable for some kids, I do not believe it is suitable for my son and that is why I did not give it to him. Some pages from the book actually made me turn red! It is my opinion that kids do not need to know all the details provided in this book in order to get the message of where they came from. An edited version would work better for me.
Covers the embarressing areas.......2007-08-23
This book does a great job at explaining why grownups like to have sex. It describes the feelings, without getting lewd.
Where Did I Come From?.......2007-08-09
My son read this in addition to another similar book, and said that this book has less information in it.
Just the facts.......2007-07-13
Great book. I had it when I was a kid and bought it for my niece and nephew. It's just the facts. With all the sex in the media and talk on the playground I think kids deserve to know the truth.

why go through life without an owner's manual on how to live smart?.......2007-04-23
truly, faith is a gift - and no one can proselytize or persuade anyone else, not should they - but how DO we know how to live a good life, how to live the Best Life?
this is a very readable Just-The-Facts explanation - in short essays that you can reference quickly or read slowly - a simple presentation of how to understand and decide the vital issues of a lifetime - applying great scholarship and wisdom to the everyday questions and problems of ordinary life that we all have, that have been true for all the centuries and that will be true until the end of time -
this would be the best Confirmation present for any Catholic - but it's not just for Catholics...because for anyone, what is more important than "settling the God thing" - deciding what to believe and why to have certainty in what we believe? why not figure this out when we are young so that we can live out our lives in accord with principles that hold up? why put off figuring out What Life Is All About?
there is joy in discovering truth and this book would help anyone find out for sure what is true for them and why - living well is not complicated and it's not easy. A good life, the Right Life IS simple and it is hard - but it's not confusing at all.
this book can REALLY help you discern for sure what makes sense to you about the Good, the Beautiful and the True - it's a bargain to get this much clarity and peace of mind for such a fair price.
"Amen" to Patrice's review!.......2006-09-30
This is another one of those books that I wish was written 30 years ago when I was a teen. The information is key to knowing how to correctly form your conscience and make choices; and knowing how to make good choices will affect the rest of your life. The authors make Aquinas very accessable to the average reader. It is written with warmth, some humor and makes the point well. Personally, I think this book should be required reading for every highschooler. This would make a great gift for the teens/young adults on your Christmas list!
Offers Answers for those Questioning Their Faith.......2006-04-10
Have you ever wondered why the Catholic Church teaches what it does on issues of faith and morals? Do you struggle with belief in a personal God? Are you having difficulty making ethical decisions? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then "Where Did I Come From? Where am I Going? How Do I Get There? Straight Answers for Young Catholics" is the book for you. Co-authored by Charles E. Rice, Professor Emeritus at Notre Dame University, and his daughter, Theresa Farnan who is a lecturer in Philosophy at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, this book seeks to provide black and white answers to a world that often only sees shades of grey.
"Where Did I Come From?" begins by proving the existence of God. This section will seem very familiar to those who have studied the work of Thomas Aquinas. For those who have not, you are in for quite a treat. If you have ever wondered "How can one prove that there is a God using reason," you will now have an answer.
The book then goes on to describe why a Church, in particular the Catholic Church, is necessary, and why there must be a Pope. The authors maintain that the teachings of the Church "are like a manual provided, not by General Motors, but by God himself to show me how to achieve eternal happiness, a goal even more important than changing a tire."
Ethics are also covered in detail. Topics discussed include: how one makes ethical decisions, why there must be a right and a wrong, and the role of our conscience in making decisions. Rice and Farnan delve into difficult ethical issues such as abortion in the case of incest or rape and the removal of feeding tubes. While one may not necessarily agree with their conclusions, they do present the official Church teaching and the reasons for it.
While this book is aimed for young Catholics who are still in the midst of being formed in the faith, it provides a useful tool for Catholics of any age who are seeking for definitive answers.

Read To My 4-year Old.......2007-08-07
Eeks! Yes, I found this book & purchased it when my daughter was three thinking that I had years of waiting before I pulled it out of the closet shelf. But we read this book together when she was four (just two months shy of her fifth birthday). My daughter kept asking me "How do women get pregnant?" and after delaying the question countless times, I thought it was better to sit down and have "the talk" rather than keep fielding her questions. I was so nervous and anxious, but I said, "Do you want to learn how women get pregnant?" and she responded, "YES!!!".
The book was tastefully written and explained things factually and in a way as to not create an embarrassing situation. When I told people that I bought a pop-up sex education book, eyebrows were raised. The book has flaps to open, a baby in utero moves its feet & head - that is the extent of the pop-up factor. This makes it more interactive and it is now my daughter's favorite book. What is nice is that the issue of 'privacy' is addressed. Couples don't try to make a baby in public and privacy should be respected.
My daughter knows the birds and bees now and is comfortable with it. She does not go around telling her friends nor does she think it is something 'nasty' or 'unnatural'. I would rather have her learn the facts of life from her parents than from her peers.
The book also explains that the couples are married and 'love each other very much' before they try to have a baby. While some may view this as 'conservative', I think it is refreshing.
My kids love this book!.......2005-01-12
This book is open, honest, colorful and presents all the pertinent info in a fun and non-threatening way to children who are naturally curious!
I like that it depicts pple of different races, sizes and shapes. The 'lift the flaps' format never fails to amuse the kids. Giggles, shrieks of laughter and definate learning are guaranteed.
It is not overly 'graphic' in nature nor does it shy away from using the proper terminology or offering up the facts of creation.
Dr. Ruth has done a great job of presenting the 'need to know' facts at an age appropriate level.

A great selection from a fine New Jersey poet.

Sentimentality and Pedestrian Prose.......2000-11-28
Gillan who fiercely took back her Italian name only when multiculturalism became fashionable, is bascially a sentamentalist. Her poetry does not rise to the truly poetic. She needs to go back to square one and study the really good Italian American poets like Felix Stefanile, Diane DiPrima, John Ciardi, Daniela Gioseffi, Donna Masini, Joseph Parisi, Dana Gioia, Maria Fama, so many others, who can write with more than old-fashioned violin strings. I had a real desire to like the book, but I was disappointed. These other authors are highly recommended reading, evenif this Italian American poet falls rather flat. There are really norisks here. The language is pedestrian. Nothing original. Que piccata! What a pity!
Maria Mazziotti Gillan: From Every Day to Universal.......2000-05-03
Maria Mazziotti Gillan is one of the most influential living Italian-American poets. She is also active in the field of multi-ethnic poetry, and is the editor of the prestigious "Paterson Literary Review." Her poetry has been compared to the poetry of the great William Carlos Williams, who came from the same area in New Jersey. And from William Carlos Williams (whom she loves), she has learned that great poetry comes from "the cup that runneth over", that is, from emotion, from intuition, and from the genuine wonder at the marvel of life. Hers is poetry that is deceptively simple and that is based on content, images, and recollections, rather than semantic funamnbolism. Her poetry also pivots around recollection, in that she follows Wordsworth's tenet that poetry is "life recollected in tranquility."
Although Mazziotti Gillan's poetry deals essentially with her experience as an Italian-American, it transcends her own ethnic origins to reach a reality that encompasses all shades and shapes of American faces and the many ways to be American.
Maria Mazziotti Gillan is the founder and director of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College in Paterson, New Jersey, and editor of the "Paterson Literary Review". With her daughter Jennifer Gillan, she coedited the acclaimed 1994 anthology "Unsettling America: An Anthology of Contemporary Multicultural Poetry and Identity Lessons: Contemporary Writing About Learning to Be American", published by Penguin in 1999. She is also the author of seven books of poetry, including "Where I Come From: Selected and New Poems" (Guernica), "The Weather of Old Seasons", Cross Cultural Communications), and "Winter Light", an American Literary Translator's Award winner. She has had several poems published in "The New York Times", "The Christian Science Monito"r, and "Poetry Ireland", as well as in numerous other journals. Awards for her work include the 1998 May Sarton Award, two New Jersey State Council on the Arts fellowships, and a Chester H. Jones Foundation Award. In addition, she was a finalist in the PEN Syndicated Fiction competition. She has appeared on National Public Radio's All Things Considered, Leonard Lopate's Books and Co., and Garrision Keillor's Writer's Almanac. Her poetry book, "Things My Mother Told Me", was published by Guernica in 1999. Currently, she is at work on a memoir entitled "My Mother's Stoop."
Maria Mazziotti Gillan's poetry is bold and gutsy, and deals directly and unflinchingly with the complicated terrain of race and ethnicity in the United States. It also boldly deals with feeling, family, and expectations, with love and longing, with childhood and old age. Mazziotti Gillan is a courageous, risk-taking poet, who does not hesitate to bare her soul. She reveals the most intimate details of her life, her family relations, her experiences as a child, as a lover, as a wife, as a mother. These experiences, far from being only Italian-American, belong to the universal realm and reflect the destiny of "Every Woman".
I have personally seen and heard Maria recite her poetry at many of her well-attended poetry readings. Having broken, a long time ago, her silence, Mazziotti Gillan speaks, in her poetry as well as in person, with an assertive, inspiring voice that at times takes on prophetic, ieratic tones. She is not, however, devoid of humor.
Maria Mazziotti's poetry, in simple and direct language, explores the universal experiences of all humans, from childhood, to adulthood, to old age. Some of the poet's strongest poems, in this good-looking book by Guernica Press, reveal her own poetic itinerary in the world of men and in the magic Kingdom of Words.
This is a book I highly recommend-a fresh, moving, inspiring book.
A Reader in California
Beyond Labels.......2000-01-06
The poet's mother is the unifying spirit in this collection of heartfelt poems ablout family life. The mother is the vehicle through which Gillan's Italian ancestory comes alive and by which hope against all odds is maintained. Through these poems we come to understand how a family--any family-survives the hardships of the present through its links with the past and dreams for a future. The poems in this collection are written in everyday language aout everyday experiences. They speak in clear, cirect language about what it means to be human. They also remind us of the importance of place in shaping our lives. This book is a gem, and I think it would appeal to a wide cross-section of people. It will make you laugh and cry. I loved it.
A Lumnious Poetry Collection.......1999-12-07
This luminous poetry collection is about much more than ethnicity. Certainly, those with an Italian American background will be especially moved by the poems that directly address that experience, but Gillan's work succeeds in transcending any single identity category and explores instead the multiple ways in which each of us learns to identify him or herself. Addressing the intricacies of class and ethnicity that determine one's relationship to what is considered "mainstream" American culture, these poems derive their power from the genuine experience of growing up poor in an Italian American neigborhood in a city of factories, rowhouses, and vacant lots. Reflecting a complex attitude toward this space, as well as to the close-knit community that both nourished and stifled her talents, these poems speak to anyone who as a child secretly wished to be a member of a "normal" made-for-television family, only to appreciate as an adult the freedom and imagninative possibility that result from embracing one's personal past and cultural origins.
Open your eyes wider.......1999-08-20
The previous reader seems to be wearing blinders that allow a look only at this ethnic aspect of Gillan's poems. Too bad. There is much more here about motherhood, heritage, city life, growing up and yes, about all those things in a frame of Italian- American Culture. Read "Arturo" & "Public School #18" and see if you don't agree. Gillan has worked hard, in her anthologies, poems and work as an editor and teacher to promote the cause of poetry and the dropping of ethnic & racial barriers. Take a closer look.
