5 out of 5 stars A rich ethnography combined with useful history.......2002-04-10

Canadian military historian Fred Gaffen's book Cross Border Warriors attempts to fill in the gaps in Canadian and American military history. He shares detailed anecdotes of the Americans who fought in the Royal Canadian Forces and the Canadians who fought for the American military, while grounding their stories deep in a macro-historical analysis of the conflicts and cooperation between the two nations. He recognizes both the strong anti-American sentiment in Canada and the occasional fear of Americans that Canada was about to attack the U.S. Ultimately, he wants to tell the stories of the 60,000 American and Canadian citizens who served in each other's armed forces since 1812.

Gaffen begins with the American Civil War, which is commonly thought of as an American only conflict, but it had a definite impact on Canada as well, not only because many Canadians served in the American Union and Confederate armies, but because the civil war was the backdrop for Canadian confederation. As skeptical as Canada's founding fathers were of the civil unrest in the United States, many Canadians "with a taste for adventure " enlisted in the American forces both North and South. Many Canadians also fell prey to crimpers from the States who enticed them under false pretenses or even drugs and alcohol to join the war in the States, usually taking the place of someone rich enough to buy his way out of service.

Crimping occurred on both sides of the border, however, and in World War I before the U.S. joined the war, Americans were crimped into duty for the Canadians. The American Foreign Enlistment Act of 1818 was supposed to prevent such abuses in recruiting, and it was finally enforced and the crimping came to a halt. Canada joined WWI in 1914, two and a half years before the U.S., and since the U.S. was officially neutral, it could not compel or explicitly let its men fight for the Canadians.

However, Canadian minister of defense Sam Hughes assembled a brigade of Americans living in Canada to fight overseas, and then when America joined the war, an agreement was reached that Canada, the U.S., and Britain could all draft each other's citizens into any of their armed forces. Many Americans chose to join the British Air Force for the chance to fly.

It is interesting to note that despite this seemingly open cooperation and trust between the two countries during WWI, the U.S. and Canada both had contingency plans in case of attack or invasion by the other or by Britain before World War II. When Canada entered WWII, many Americans crossed the border to join the Canadian Air Force Special Reserve, which they could do without losing their citizenship. They would take an oath of obedience to the Canadian army, but not an oath of allegiance, and therefore retain their American citizenship. However, when the U.S. entered the war in 1941, many Americans returned to the U.S. forces because of national pride and better compensation.

Canada also had the Clayton Knight committee dedicated to recruiting American pilots to fly for the Royal Canadian Air Force, which many Americans joined because of the more relaxed education and training requirements.

Canadian participation in American conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf was much less pronounced, mostly because of the smaller scale of these wars and less need for foreign soldiers. Canada did send a brigade of its own to fight in Korea, but most Canadians who fought in that war did so under U.S. command. Generally, Canadian Korea veterans had a much more positive experience than Canadian Vietnam veterans. Many Canadians went to fight for the U.S. in Vietnam seeking glory and adventure, but they were sadly disappointed, and most felt "used and abandoned by the American government." More Canadian veterans than American suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the horrors of Vietnam and they receive less public support. Canadian Vietnam veterans face considerable hostility from the Canadian public, and they are treated even more as outcasts than American Vietnam veterans in the U.S. Canadian involvement in the Persian Gulf war was limited mostly to Canadians already living in the U.S. or special forces assigned to help with the battle.

Through detailed historical facts and personal anecdotes, Fred Gaffen makes an important contribution to the often neglected soldiers who fought across borders in the past two centuries. He provides the recognition that these brave men and women deserve and have often not received. He emphasizes the important and lasting ties that veterans from Canada and the United States keep to this day, and hopes that the two countries will continue their friendly relations and willingness to help a neighbor in times of crisis.

4 out of 5 stars Revealing and Inspiring! Shows our best!.......2000-06-15

Gaffen shows our guys serving in each other's armed forces from the War of Northern Agression, through the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf.

Gaffen begins each section with a history of the conflict. The first part brings to us the lives of Canadians who served in the Federal Army, including several Medal of Honour winners, and details how Canada was a tacit ally of the Confederate States of America. This part also tells the stories of several Americans who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during 1914-1918, including author Raymond Chandler and several Victoria Cross winners. The 1939-45 section begins with Americans in the RAF and RCAF, and goes on to the accounts of several Americans and Canadians serving in each other's militaries, including the only member of the US Coast Guard to win the Medal of Honour. The Korea part is shorter, but does briefly mention one American from New Jersey who was KIA while serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment. The Vietnam chapter is patterned after Gaffen's previous book < >, and includes two of Canada's greatest heros, Fidele Joseph Bastarache, and Michael John "Bat" Masterson. The Gulf section discusses two Canadians who served in the US military during that war. The appendices on Canadian Medal of Honour recipients (including some from the Indian Campaigns, the Spanish American War, The Mexican capaign against Pancho Villa and others in between), Canadian casualties of Vietnam, Medal of Honour recipients buried in Canada, and American recipients of the Victoria Cross are informative and inspiring.

The only thing Gaffen missed was the death of US Special Forces Sergeant Robert Deeks, killed by a landmine on 2, March 1993, while serving with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Somalia. However, this can hardly be a fault or a flaw in the book, as Gaffen was probably doing the research or writing during that time frame.

This is a very heartwarming and inspiring book. In an era when Canadian politicians and wrestlers, and Canadian and American sports fans work very hard to foment enmity between our people, Gaffen's book reminds us that we have a lot more in common than a border and a language. Gaffen also shows he truly cares about the people of which he writes, expressing his personal support for the cause of Canadian Vietnam Veterans. Given that Gaffen works for the Government (the Canadian War Museum), this took guts.

A very informative and touching tome. I would make it required reading in high school history classes on both sides of the border.

We found this book to be very informative and of great help in knowing what a gem mine or business has to offer in gem's and minerals. We think that this guide is a must for any one looking for gems to know what they do to help you and offer you . very ,very good .

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2006-06-21

Really thin volumes that hardly cover each state included. Big on organization and sections, but what is the use if they say "no information."

Most of the content is museums which can be found on the web or in free state tourism guides. The list of collecting sites (free, or fee) is sorely underdeveloped.

I returned my copy, even though I wont see much $ after shipping charges are deducted from the refund amount. I was just plain insulted by the book. (I got Northeast and Southeast books - sent both back!)

This book is loaded with useless information. If your looking for someplace to mine gold or gems. This book will not tell you. It does however provide you with guide services contact information. So if your looking for a river or area in your state where you can pan some gold. Don't look in this book! I didn't see anything you can't see in the yellow pages of your local phone book.

A real disappointment. I have looked over the "Quadrant" series by Eckart and it was much better. I would recommend a book search for the "Gems and Minerals of America" by Jay Ellis Ransom, it has much more comprehensive information and a lot more than even the "Quadrant" series contains. But of course local "collecting guides" are even better. Contact the clubs in the area you are going to visit and see if they will let you go on one of their field trips or suggest a location. I'm VP of the Montgomery Gem and Mineral Society, we would love to take you on a trip.

          4 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly enjoyable.......2001-11-16

Anyone who's seen reviews I've written of other anthologies might be expecting a poor review here. But actually, not in this case. For once, I seem to have stumbled across an anthology in which the individual novellas are all very readable, enjoyable, and which suit the format of a shorter length. This is particularly surprising in the case of this anthology, in which all stories are about 70 pages long.

Three of my favourite writers are in this five-author anthology, which might have contributed to my enjoyment - but then Putney and Layton's novellas are not set in eighteenth- or nineteenth-century England, which is the setting I'm used to from them.

There is something of a theme to the collection, in that four out of five stories concern men who are or who appear to be rogues, and who reform right under the heroine's nose. MJP's contribution, set in Texas a hundred or so years ago, sees a condemned man being taken to hang for murder. Along the way, a young woman - who, it turns out, might have good reason to hate him - takes pity on him and they spend one unforgettable night together. But he's condemned to die, so how can they have a future?

Joan Wolf, an author I've never encountered before, sets her story, The Antagonists, in Regency England; the hero and heroine are cousins who grew up together. I would normally have wanted much more to this story, but Wolf uses an interesting technique. The story is told in first person, from the heroine's POV. And since Dinah starts off by telling us how spoilt and nasty her cousin Thorn (the Earl of Thornton) is, we're led off on quite a misleading track. (Although Dinah does reveal that she has a tendency to exaggerate!)

Layton's contribution, Buried Treasure, was the disappointment in this collection for me. A pirate narrowly survives a murder attempt and recovers in the house of a beautiful young woman whose seduction he plots. Unfortunately, for reasons related to both his behaviour towards her and to his fellow pirates, I couldn't come to like Dancer at all, and wouldn't want to re-read this novella.

Next was Patricia Rice, also new to me; her tale, Fathers and Daughters, covers the well-worn subject-matter of an impoverished suitor who was turned away by the heroine's father. Carolyn also believes that Jack accepted money from her father to walk away from her. Now that he's back, can he possibly convince her that he wasn't only interested in her money, and that he wasn't paid to reject her?

Finally, Mary Balogh's Precious Rogue. This is a lovely story, told with Balogh's great skill; Patricia, the poor relation who is effectively her aunt's slave, has no great opinion of her cousin's suitor, Mr Bancroft. After all, the man is an unprincipled rake, and - although no-one else seems to notice - during Patricia's aunt's house party Bancroft conducts clandestine affairs with at least three women. But what Patricia can't ignore is the fact that he is *nice* to her. And she enjoys their verbal fencing... too much for her own good. After all, he's going to marry her cousin...

This one is certainly worth a look.

          4 out of 5 stars Repeats.......1999-08-13

The stories are good, but have all been published before. According to the Copyright page "The Antagonist" by Joan Wolf and "Fathers and Daughters" by Patricia Rice first appeared in A Regency Valentine; "Buried Treasure" by Edith Layton and "Precious Rogue" by Mary Balogh in Dashing & Dangerous; and "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know" by Mary Jo Putney in Rakes and Rogues. I had already read Putney's story (very good, but then everything she writes is) but was glad to get Wolf's (although I think a longer format suits her better) and I really liked Balogh's (very satisfying - nice ending)

          Book Description

Elizabeth Matthews never expected her son Patrick to be diagnosed with autism. But she didn't expect him to becomer her "escalator to heaven", either. In Precious Treasure, Matthews describes the joys, challenges, and heartaches of raining a child with special needs.

          4 out of 5 stars Very moving.......2005-01-09

Even though the book is aimed at parents, I am 15 years old, and I loved it! It contains a lot of great lessons for coming close to God. There were so many times I wanted to cry while reading this. It is so moving, and has something for everyone, parent or not! This book really is a precious treasure!

5 out of 5 stars Proud to be a Mom.......2003-05-06

This book is a beautiful witness to all mothers about our special treasures. Whether we have one child or ten each is precious. Elizabeth Matthews tells of the joys and trials of her very special little boy who brings her so much "golden treasure." The book reminded me that it is our perspective on things that makes them a burden or a treasure. This is a wonderful Mother's Day Gift!

          5 out of 5 stars A heart warming story.......2003-03-14

This is a wonderful book that pertains to everyone. My husband read it and loved it too. We both laughed and cried. It taught me to count my blessings and stop complaining about little things we have no control over. The book is based on how Beth relies on her faith to get her through difficult times. I recommend this book to everyone -not just mothers with a special needs child.

          5 out of 5 stars Precious Treasure.......2003-03-10

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ways to strengthen their spirituality. Beth reveals how her faith comes into play daily, hourly and moment to moment. Her son Patrick is one of the main focuses of the book. He is autistic. I learned about autism, yet felt that the focus of the book was much broader than autism. Beth is married and the mother of 10 children. She has a lot of wisdom and faith from her own personal journey. Anyone could benifit from this book who is looking for ways to enhance their life in difficult and/or not difficult times in their life through faith and trust in a power greater than themself.

          5 out of 5 stars A book for all.......2003-02-23

This is a book for all parents and all grandparents. A book for anyone who is struggling with the problems of everyday life. I laughed and cried and read the book at one sitting. Ms. Matthews writes from actual life in a simple and loving way. I highly recommend it.

            1 out of 5 stars Worthless Book.......2005-10-19

I live in New Mexico and this book lists only 4 sites to mine / rock hound. I know of at least 35 sites in the state none of witch the book lists not to mention the books 4 sites are all pay sites where you must pay a fee to dig. The author did little to no research on the available sites in this state. In the back of this book is a form called readers contribution where the author wants you the reader to send them the locations of mines you know of so they don't have to do any research and may profit off your work or knowledge. Do not waste your time on this book if you are serious about rock mineral and gem hunting.

3 out of 5 stars not bad, a bit light.......2005-05-24

Oh well, I suppose that this guide tells the truth and has no glaring inadequacies, but maybe the whole Southwest is to big to cover in a book to introduce the layman to gem and mineral collecting. Kinda light...
