    Book Description

One of the most important, exciting biographies of our time: the definitive, major two-volume biography of Pierre Elliott Trudeau – written with unprecedented, complete access to Trudeau’s enormous cache of private letters and papers.

Bestselling biographer John English gets behind the public record and existing glancing portraits of Trudeau to reveal the real man and the multiple influences that shaped his life, providing the full context lacking in all previous biographies to-date.

As prime minister between 1968 and 1984, Trudeau, the brilliant, controversial figure, intrigued Canadians and attracted international attention as no other Canadian leader has ever done. Volume One takes us from his birth in 1919 to his election as leader in 1968.

Born into a wealthy family in Montreal, Trudeau excelled at the best schools, graduating as a lawyer with conservative, nationalist and traditional Catholic views. But always conscious of his French-English heritage, desperate to know the outside world, and an adventurer to boot, he embarked on a pilgrimage of discovery – first to Harvard and the Sorbonne, then to the London School of Economics and, finally, on a trip through Europe, the Middle East, India and China. He was a changed man when he returned – socialist in his politics, sympathetic to labour, a friend to activists and writers in radical causes. Suddenly and surprisingly, he went to Ottawa for two mostly unhappy years as a public servant in the Privy Council Office. He frequently shocked his colleagues when, on the brink of a Quebec election, for example, he departed for New York or Europe on an extended tour. Yet in the 1950s and 60s, he wrote the most important articles outlining his political philosophy.

And there were the remarkable relationships with friends, women and especially his mother (whom he lived with until he was middle-aged). He wrote to them always, exchanging ideas with the men, intimacies with the women, especially in these early years, and lively descriptions of his life. He even recorded his in-depth psychoanalysis in Paris. This personal side of Trudeau has never been revealed before – and it sheds light on the politician and statesman he became.

Volume One ends with his entry into politics, his appointment as Minister of Justice, his meeting Margaret and his election as leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada. There, his genius and charisma, his ambition and intellectual prowess, his ruthlessness and emotional character and his deliberate shaping of himself for leadership played out on the national stage and, when Lester B. Pearson announced his retirement as prime minister in 1968, there was but one obvious man for the job: Pierre Trudeau.

In 1938 Trudeau began a diary, which he continued for over two years. It is detailed, frank, and extraordinarily revealing. It is the only diary in Trudeau’s papers, apart from less personal travel diaries and an agenda for 1937 that contains some commentary. His diary expresses Trudeau’s own need to chronicle the moments of late adolescence as he tried to find his identity. It begins on New Year’s Day 1938 with the intriguing advice: “If you want to know my thoughts, read between the lines!”

    Book Description

Pierre Elliott Trudeau always opposed the dominant ideology and what passed for conventional wisdom. This was true when he spoke out against the oppressive rule of Maurice Duplessis in Quebec. It was true in his years in Ottawa, as justice minister and prime minister, when he introduced controversial measures ranging from wage-and-price controls and restrictions on foreign investments, to expanded rights for homosexuals. It remained true in the years after his retirement, particularly when he has took issue with the more provocative expressions of Quebec nationalism and with federal initiatives such as Meech Lake and the Charlottetown Accord.

Now neo-conservative ideas have taken over. Virtually every level of government in Canada is competing with the others to reduce the role of the state and eliminate constraints on business. Less government has come to mean a smaller role especially for the federal government. And the increased powers taken on by the provinces are being used, increasingly, to substitute private interests for the public good. The Canada that promoted equality, justice, and opportunity for all is under sustained attack. Never has the need for a clear statement of liberal principles been greater.

In this volume, Ron Graham brought together a selection of excerpts from Trudeau’s writings, speeches, and interviews – many of them never before published in book form – to make a highly readable, lucid, and compelling summary of Trudeau’s political beliefs. To each chapter in this selection Trudeau provided an introduction and to many of the excerpts he added a new commentary. The result is a book of remarkable power: rational, timely, and eloquent.

5 out of 5 stars Trudeau Is Your Guide!!.......2003-10-30

I was one of those people who never voted and never had an opinion on anything political. But after reading PET's views and thoughts about Canada and her people, I can say I am a Liberal. This book helped me come to a more complete vision on what a Canadian should strive to be. I was looking for a guide to help me understand Canada, and without Trudeau I would still be in the dark. In a world where there is no left or right and everyone just flip flops around the middle, this book stands up for what being a Liberal is about. The book doesn’t dictate, it just cuts out the BS and leaves you with something to think about. You will get slapped in the face with the honest and straight to the point style of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Quick Trudeau reference.......2001-07-13

Trudeauites search no more! In this small book, you'll find all of Trudeaus quotes and thoughts, culled from thousands of pages of materials. They are grouped by relevant section (Quebec sovereignty, etc) and the quotes used make great conversation starters. Love Trudeau or hate him, this book gives both sides plenty of ammo.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-02-21

"The Essential Trudeau" is a well crafted novel that manages to amalgamate all of Trudeau's views on politics into one pocketbook sized novel. What made it very interesting was its ability to seize the reader with it simplicity. Unlike most other political books, this one manages to use language that can be understood by the youngest of Trudeauites. Pierre Trudeau himself contributes to the novel by adding new information on his views and justification for past political decisions while he was in office. This is a very brave book that looks at the views of a man considered to be Canada's most influential Prime Minister. An entire range of topics are covered in this book, including "The state of Quebec nationalism" and "The Role of the state". I highly recomend this novel, as it presents the views of a man who will go down in history as a true liberal.

Since his election as Prime Minister in June, 1968, Pierre Elliott Trudeau has dominated Canadian politics and wielded an extraordinary influence-even after his retirement from political life in 1984. Right up to the present day, through his pronouncements and publications, Trudeau continues both to fascinate us and to provoke highly emotional reactions.

                Book Description

Pierre Trudeau was prime minister of Canada from 1968 to 1979 and from 1980 to 1984. This is his story, told in his own words.

Take a look through the book. When you do, you will find that this remarkable memoir has many qualities. It is:

                PERSONAL
As if he were sitting across the table from you, Pierre Trudeau reminisces about his life in an informal, direct way. He starts with his memories of his family, especially his mother and father, to whom the book is dedicated. There are memorable events from childhood here, such as a visit to complain to the principal on his second day at school. Later there is a lunchroom encounter with a high school bully and then, at the age of fifteen, real tragedy.

“Aroused by the ringing of the telephone, I came out of my room to go downstairs and find out what was happening. But I froze on the landing when I heard the awful words: ‘Your father is dead, Pierre.’”

                PHILOSOPHICAL
After an extensive education in Montreal, Boston, London, and Paris, Trudeau set off with a backpack to travel around the world. He tells how he went through one war zone after another, encountering armed bandits and being arrested in wartime Jordan as a Jewish spy. These adventures and further travels through India and war-torn China left with him a deep belief in the rights of the individual and the vital role of government in protecting these rights. He tells how his hatred of narrow nationalism reinforced his stand against requests for special treatment by successive Quebec governments.

                POLITICAL
From the day he decided to go to Ottawa as a Liberal MP in 1965, Trudeau was clearly on a fast track. After becoming minister of justice in 1967 and tackling very controversial law reforms, he ran for the leadership and became prime minister in 1968 – the first Canadian leader born in the twentieth century. He talks about his use of “the Liberal machine” and all the electoral fights that followed over the year, providing interesting insights into his contests with national opponents such as Robert Stanfield, David Lewis, Joe Clark (a tougher opponent than the man who deposed him), Ed Broadbent, and Brian Mulroney, about whose virtues he is eloquently silent.

                PERSONALITY-FILLED
As a leader whose time in office ran from the fall of Charles de Gaulle to the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev, Pierre Trudeau was able to exert his influence to break down the Cold War mentality. He enjoyed good personal rapport with such different leaders as Chou Enlai, Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, Helmut Schmidt, and François Mitterand. His relations with Richard Nixon and Margaret Thatcher were less warm, and he was less impressed by Ronald Reagan’s intellect than by the wisdom of the Queen.

                PATRIOTIC
Whether they loved him or hated him, Canadians knew that in Pierre Trudeau’s time, the government stood up for Canada. He stood up to the domestic terrorism of the FLQ – and he makes no apologies here for his tough response to the October Crisis in 1970 – just as he stood up to the provincial premiers (including Réné Lévesque) who he believed were blocking the patriation of Canada’s constitution ten years later.

                PERTINENT
The author’s preface ends with a word to you, the reader. “Whether you were a Liberal Cabinet colleague, a Canadian voter whose support we sought, or a young Canadian whose future we tried to improve, you are a part of this book.”

1 out of 5 stars THE AUTHOR OF CANADA'S MISFORTUNES.......2006-07-30

In retrospect history will judge Trudeau as an unmitigated disaster for Canada. Many mistook his arrogance and aloofness for intellectual stature. The only thing greater than the sycophantic love displayed by some Canadians for Trudeau was his absolute contempt for Canadian voters.

This is as fine a memoir as one could expect from a man who kept his secret self so distant from others that one suspects he sometimes found the line difficult to cross himself. Trudeau was not only the most intelligent prime minister Canada ever had, but probably the most brilliant (intellectually speaking) statesman any nation ever had. However, his mind went to places that were not always to do with the ebb & flow of politics. It is unfortunate that this memoir does not tell us more about the man's secret self. I don't mean just gossip column things; I refer to his thoughts on life, literature, & art: topics on which anyone who knew him recognized his mastery. The book is brilliant too, but I suggest that it requires some reading between the lines to catch at what Monsieur Trudeau only hints. It's his truth from the inside, after all, so he shouldn't be expected to see himself "objectively" & account for the way he was seen by others. This can be uncomfortable sometimes. For example, when he was nearly defeated in the first election after "Trudeaumania" in 1972 because he attempted to be straight, true, & honest with the Canadian public, he roared back playing the "promise'em the world" consumate politician in 1974 to a majority government. I would have wished for more third person objectivity here. Still Trudeau was a giant mind & a giant will-power amongst mental idiots & usual politicoes during his tenure. I believe he has the right to do just what he did in this magnificent memoir: Speak from the heights & tell it as he alone saw it. Bravo! We'll not see his like again.

4 out of 5 stars He was Canada........2000-09-30

Although always a controversial man, P.E.T. embodied what it means to be a Canadian. Over his 16 years as Prime Minister he was directly involved in many major events which have shaped Canadian history. I write this the day after his passing, so in consequence I am probably a little biased. I grew up with Trudeau. The first 11 years of my life he was P.M. I could go on and on with the memories, as some have suggested he did with his Memoirs. However, that was the beauty of Trudeau. He was a brilliant man and loved life.

In answer to the comment from the reader in Toronto that he glossed over many not so stellar performances on his part - have you ever read another auto-biography of a public figure which told the whole truth and nothing but? There are many sides to a story. I would challenge anyone to write about their lives and not smooth certain parts over abit!

All in all Trudeau takes us through his tenure as P.M. in one of the most exciting periods in recent human history - 1968-1984. Anyone who is interested in world or Canadian affairs should read this book. And it's a must for every Canadian household.

                Volume 1: The Magnificent Obsession
Winner of the Governor General’s Award

This volume examines the formative influences on Pierre Trudeau’s childhood, his knight-errant youth and early manhood, his charismatic ascent to the Liberal Party leadership, and his dramatic first decade as prime minister. It concludes with his bittersweet triumphs in fighting off the separatists in the 1980 referendum campaign and his battle with provincial premiers to patriate the Canadian constitution.

5 out of 5 stars An untold story.......2001-05-30

As someone who was too young to experience "Trudeaumania", this book gives me a lot of insight into who Trudeau was and also who were the men and women behind the scenes of those Liberal governments that changed Canada.

As someone who grew up during the Mulroney and Chretien governments, it made me yearn to be a little older so I could experience what happened during that tumultuous times.

Trudeau was an enigma wrapped in a riddle and this book does an amazing job in conveying that story and passion that drove him.

4 out of 5 stars I have rarely read a political bio. of such depth and scope.......1999-07-14

While I, as an American, do not have the intimate knowledge that a Canadian of my age would have of the times, this biography of Trudeau gives me an insight both into the character and career of Pierre Elliot Trudeau and into this era of Canadian political history. Trudeau's fights within and without the Liberal party and against those who changed the Quiet Revolution into the politics of succesion are engrossing and fascinating. Also striking is the way that the Canadian (and European) study of political economy, as opposed to American political science, gives one a greater insight into the times and the economic forces at work in the political sphere. The only reason that I didn't give this five stars is because I don't feel qualified to judge Canadian political scholarship.

                    Book Description

At the turn of the last century, as industrialists and workers made Chicago the hardworking City of Big Shoulders celebrated by Carl Sandburg, Chicago women articulated an alternative City of Homes in which the welfare of residents would be the municipal government's principal purpose. Seeing With Their Hearts traces the formation of this vision from the relief efforts following the Chicago fire of 1871 through the many political battles of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. In the process, it presses a new understanding of the roles of women in public life and writes a new history of urban America.

Heeding the call of activist Louise de Koven Bowen to become third-class passengers on the train of life, thousands of women "put their shoulders to the wheel and their whole hearts into the work" of fighting for better education, worker protections, clean air and water, building safety, health care, and women's suffrage. Though several well-known activists appeared frequently in these initiatives, Maureen Flanagan offers compelling evidence that women established a broad and durable solidarity that spanned differences of race, class, and political experience. She also shows that these women--emphasizing their common identity as women seeking a city amenable to the needs of women, children, families, and homes--pursued a vision and goals distinct from the reform agenda of Progressive male activists. They fought hard and sometimes successfully in a variety of public places and sites of power, winning victories from increased political clout and prenatal care to municipal garbage collection and pasteurized milk.

While telling the fascinating and in some cases previously untold stories of women activists during Chicago's formative period, this book fundamentally recasts urban social and political history.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY WONDERFUL AND INSPIRING BOOK.......2005-04-22

I just have to say that I don't believe in hell or satan. I say that because they are both in this book but I truly feel that a God that refers to us as His children, that a God who created us in His image, that a God who loves us so unconditonally and deeply without exception would create such evil as satan and punish His children by putting them in the fires of hell for eternity to burn. Having said that, and granted that is my own personal belief, I loved this book. It is truly an inspiring and enlightening book with much useful information. I use the prayers and practices daily and love them. Joyce Ann Stevens is truly a wonderful person who truly loves humanity and wants to help us all go to Heaven and make our Heavenly Father and Mother proud of us and for us to all be given the title "Good Daughter or Son". I know I am touched by the love and caring and compassion that Joyce Ann Stevens has for people to do all she had to do to write and publish this wonderful book. I thank God for Joyce Ann and for his wisdom in choosing such a special person to do His special work and pass along this invaluable message He has for His children. I sincerely hope to see more books by Joyce Ann Stevens and God. I will be keeping my eyes open for another book and antoher and another. God bless you Joyce Ann and may you always be protected from evil no matter where or how it comes. Keep the faith and know that you are special and very much appreciated in this world. This world would be a much colder and impersonal place without your presence in it. Thank you for all the caring and love that went into your book and please continue your work so that people like me can be saved and live a much more Godly life. Thank you Joyce Ann Stevens and thank you God.

Poems expressing the Inner Visions of the mind, the heart, the body and the individual soul

There is a belief that moves about the Universe. "If you hold an image of the life that you want to experience, that image and that experience will become your reality."

There is an Inner Vision present in our lives. Some of us can can see it, touch it, and feel it -as we've come to know it, through the cracks and crevices of our own mind-altering experiences.

                        Letter to God

"You're My Inspiration, because when I was a little girl, I was unloved. My parents were abusive. You were my voice and your soft spoken words: my comfort. I wrote love letters to myself with the words that only you could bring to me while you breathed life into my lungs. Because of you, a writer is born-and your blanket of love and warmth is still protecting and covering me, to this very day.

                        Thank you God.

                        Book Description

Majesty. Too grand a word? Hardly. The challenge rises in trying to describe a great wild ruggedness with a language born on a small island of green hills. Or, on a deeper level, trying to reduce the imperfect harmony of a roaring flute-an 800-pound, urine soaked, mud-slathered, wild-eyed flute-to a few flat syllables. Plenty of folks have tried. And a few, in sublime moments, have crossed over, the pages of their books suddenly smelling like pine duff and elk musk. Those sublime moments are gathered together here-the words of dozens of people who have loved elk and elk country over the past century. And these passages are coupled with a language of greater clarity-photographs that need no words, images that ring with something very much like the sound of a faint bugle drifting down out of the fog. Listen well as you turn these pages. There is majesty here.

                          Book Description

Measurement of Cardiac Deformations from MRI: Physical and Mathematical Models describes the latest imaging and imag analysis techniques that have been developed at leading centers for the visualization, analysis, and understanding of normal and abnormal cardiac motion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of MRI in measuring cardiac motion is particularly important because MRI is non-invasive, and it is the only modality capable of imaging detailed intramural motion within the myocardium.
Biomedical engineers, medical physicists, computer scientists, and physicians interested in learning about the latest advances in cardiovascular MRI should find this book to be a valuable educational resource. In particular, it is more tutorial in nature than most of the technical papers where the research was originally published. Practitioners and researchers working in the field of cardiovascular MRI will find the book to be filled with practical technical details and references to other work, enabling the implementation of existing methods and serving as a basis for further research in the area.

In her second book, Lynn Price continues to deliver a powerful call to action. The reader can't help but be inspired by Lynn's own story (to read more about it, check out her first book, Real Belonging: Give Siblings the Right to Reunite.) One can only wonder how great the world could be if everyone was as generous, smart, and proactive as Lynn. This book is proof that one person can truly create a "ripple" effect and make a real difference in the lives of others.
