                        Book Description

Offering a practical new approach to the management of child-at-risk cases, this book illuminates how parents perceive therapists and child protection workers and why, from their own point of view, they so frequently refuse to cooperate with intervention. Amply illustrated by case examples and interviews with parents, the book helps readers overcome common difficulties associated with the referral process while maximizing parents' cooperation and motivation for therapy. MacKinnon challenges dominant professional discourses that attribute abuse to parents' "pathology" or "dysfunction," showing instead how family violence and the referral process itself are inextricably linked to dynamics of gender, class, power, and powerlessness. Readers learn to develop an effective relationship discourse with families, giving voice to the experience of each member and eliciting their commitment to nonviolence, fairness, and equality. Special attention is given to the therapist's role as a "power broker" who can prevent problems and intervene in difficulties between families and child protection agencies.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for family therapists........1999-10-30

Trust and Betrayal in the Treatment of Child Abuse is a rich and profound examination of an area of thought and work fraught with complexity. MacKinnon maps a clear path through the dilemmas of child abuse, combining a depth of theoretical approach with clear practice guidelines. What is so appealing about MacKinnon's writing is its clarity and accessibility in the midst of a gritty analysis of socio-political discourses. Her ideas are conceptually satisfying and include constant reference to case examples that are helpful illustrations of the theoretical ideas explored.

Trust and Betrayal provides a framework to examine the many difficulties emerging when dealing with issues of child abuse. MacKinnon presents thoughtful solutions to inherent systemic problems that inevitably result when attempts at social control and therapeutic gain intersect. It is at the point of intersection of a number of different discourses, especially the discourses within family therapy and child protection that this book offers a more complex understanding of the position of the individual, the family and the wider system. For those working with families, the book challenges us to a depth of understanding of our clients, which involves a consideration of gendered, powered relationships and ideas of class. MacKinnon places the client's subjectivity within those discourses showing how it develops out of the particular underlying premises and beliefs within a family.

The first part of the book deals with "Child Abuse in Context". There is no simplistic analysis here. Clinical problems are explored in combination with an understanding of various contexts which families bring to therapy. These include the context in which families are referred, in which they live their lives, and the context in which premises and beliefs held by the family and by child protection workers continue to exist unchallenged.

The chapter on the "Genealogy of Relationships" is worth particular mention. Here MacKinnon introduces a new discourse around child abuse that in our opinion creates a space for therapeutic change without minimising the seriousness of abuse. There are some fascinating ideas here suggesting a new conceptualisation of relationships involving the "dominant account" of family relationships and the importance of eliciting the "hidden account". This genealogical approach "seeks and allows for each person's account of relationships. It can be a guide to how therapists can approach the story of abuse from family members and effect a change in underlying network premises held by family members" (P.97).

The last half of the book is essential reading for therapists working with families who have become intertwined with the Child Protection Department. The approach outlined is based on years of research and a therapy project undertaken by the author. The crux of the approach is that it effectively engages families and gives them a different experience of working with professionals.

MacKinnon's feminist-informed approach is radically different from a position that assumes, even before therapy begins, that it is not useful to work with perpetrators. She creates a space for the therapist to be positioned which may allow for the parent who abuses to work towards safe contact with the family/child. She argues that the task of the therapist is to sit in the space that names abuse as abuse. Whilst holding the abusing parent accountable, the therapist works to negotiate a safe way for relationships in the family to continue. She describes the therapist's role as that of a "power broker". What stands out in this approach is a deep respect for all family members and their significant relationships within a context of accountability.

The account of "the working class" in Chapter 4 is perhaps more homogeneous than we would expect. We think other accounts exist which are not included here. We are also left wondering why MacKinnon does not explore the issues that exist for therapists in dealing with child abuse, when the most therapeutic position may be to decide not to continue with, or even start therapy.

What we do not doubt is that MacKinnon brings to her writing an ability to see the world through her wealth of experience as a therapist, supervisor and consultant. Her work is respectful and compassionate, including the voice of each party in the web surrounding child abuse, with a rich interweaving of comments from parents and workers who have entrusted her with their opinions.

Trust and Betrayal brings a refreshing breath to a discourse that does not usually self-reflect, namely the discourse around relationships between clients of the Child Protection Department, the Departmental workers themselves, and therapists. It is valuable reading not just for family therapists but for those entering the field of child protection and those working with families and individuals where there have been allegations of abuse.

                        Book Description

For generations, untold numbers of women suffered the silent horror of being sexually exploited by respected professional men whom society deemed above reproach. The frightened cries of these victims fell on deaf ears. Lately, the epidemic abuse of professional power for sexual favors has secured a prominent place in America's conscience. Victimized women are now empowered to speak out as society tries to understand how and why their pillars have fallen. In this thought-provoking book, women who have been coerced into sexual liaisons by lawyers, doctors, clergymen, educators, and other professionals reveal their experiences and the toll it took on their lives. Their recollections provide fresh insight into why some women are vulnerable to exploitation and what leads these men to risk their entire livelihoods to seduce their patient, client, or confidante. What ensues is an in-depth examination of a type of relationship that begins with trust, feeds on real or imagined attraction, and often ends in emotional ruin. In Betrayal of Trust, studying the actual relationship is only the beginning. Friedman and Boumil dig deeper to educate about exploitative situations. Readers will learn about early warning signs for recognizing when a professional relationship is crossing the dangerous boundary line between professionalism and sexual abuse. On the legal front, new laws and statutes concerning sexual exploitation and malpractice are considered along with the time, financial, and emotional ramifications of lawsuits and other legal recourse. Victims are taken step-by-step through the long psychological healing process that leads from anger, shame, and guilt to vindication, resolution, and recovery. Related issues such as mutual consent and the ethics of sexual relationships between a man and woman after termination of their professional relationship are also discussed. The book not only sheds light on the misuse of power in professional relationships. It performs a valuable public service by pinpointing potential targets of abuse and offering hope for the thousands of victims who need to know why it happened to them and how they can pick up the pieces.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Discussion of a much ignored issue........1999-07-22

As a victim of pediatric doctor-patient sexual abuse, I'm always glad to see this covert issue discussed. However, this book, did not provide enough information to help in my case. Of the few texts I've discovered of this issue, abusive mental health professionals are explored more often than doctors who give physical exams. The sections dealing with abusive mental health professionals and clergy are excellent. However, Betrayl of Trust could have discussed abuse within other doctor-patient relationships more thoroughly. Issues such as appropriate, feasible ways of seeking legal retaliation (which in my experience is none), problems of limitation statutes, and the dangerous possibility of posting the medical abuser's name on the world wide web are neglected. Though the book did not provide much useful information for me, I give four stars to the authors for having the courage to write on these important matters.

When Julie Hilden's mother became ill her daughter didn't do what was expected of her. Julie chose to abandon her mother and make her own life. As a child, she used books to escape her mother's silent retreats and bewildering rages. When Harvard's acceptance letter came, she fled. She blamed no one for her sad childhood, and she never asked for forgiveness. THE BAD DAUGHTER is Hilden's haunting, intelligent story of how she began discarding all traces of her former life. In the course of the story, however, Hilden discovers that she can never fully escape her past. Each new relationship she forms is influenced by her betrayal of her mother. And in a final, chilling irony, Hilden learns there is a good chance she carries the very same gene for early-onset Alzheimer's that brought on her mother's terrifying fate. "It's hard to decide what is more remarkable about Julie Hilden's THE BAD DAUGHTER: her unusual courage and frankness or her remarkable gifts as a writer. This is an absorbing book and an impressive debut."--Alison Lurie.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for courage.......2006-05-11

Julie Hilden displays great courage as she tackles the taboo subject of parent abandonment. This thought-provoking memoir, while often hard to digest in its frankness, gives great insight into the mind and emotions of a gifted young woman, seemingly destined to a troubled life.
Born to a mother and father who fail her in varying ways, she recedes into a cerebral world of books, and a quest for worldly accomplishment.Inviting us into her inner world, filled with angst and self-loathing, she delves into profound questions of life, death and the randomness of Alzheimers disease. Hilden confronts the very real possibility that she herself, may eventually have to bear the same disease that has taken her mother.
This is a haunting story that will stay with you, long after you've read the last page, closed the book.

                          1 out of 5 stars Pretentious, boring..........2004-12-17

Julie Hilden blew me away with her novel called Three. It was one of the darkest, most thought provoking erotic novels I have read in a long time. And for that reason, I decided to give her memoir a whirl. Bad Daughter is pretentious in more ways than one. Julie talks about her painful childhood as she watched her mother hit rock bottom with her alcoholism. Her mother now has Alzheimer and is unable to take care of herself. Julie decides not to look after her mother and chooses to go to law school instead. What transpires is a long take of her childhood and self-torture for the decisions she has made.

This memoir is pretentious because it tries to be philosophical and analytical about almost everything. The author should have limited things to just telling the reader about her childhood and the dilemmas she's faced as an adult. There are so many memoirs out there about alcoholic parents and family members with Alzheimer that one more makes no difference. Hilden wanted to come across as a careless, apathetic daughter trying to justify her decision to not look after her ill mother, and it got tiring after a while. There is nothing in this memoir that makes it standout. Reading Bad Daughter caused me to yawn more times than any other bad book I have recently read.

1 out of 5 stars Too much information.......2003-08-03

Ms. Hilden writes this book to cure her own demons and appease her own guilt. She is brave to write it, but inconsiderate to the reader as some details go too far. While she titles the book 'the bad daughter' she never owns up to her own responsibility.

I think she was a daughter who did the best she could. I wish she would write a sequel in which she forgives herself. This book made be glad I did not know the author. I hope writing is has helped her find solace.

2 out of 5 stars Typical, not bad just typical.......2003-06-30

I've met a lot of Yale Law grad students over the years. Believe it or not, Hilden seems to be probably middle ground in terms of charm and empathy. You should enjoy some quality time with the truly bad sons and daughters of Eli.

Moderately intersting book, good for the "writing as therapy" set and those looking for another turn on the Confessions motif available from Augustine to Rousseau down to the self help shelves. Hilden's is better written than the self help books, but not much deeper. If you like this kind of book, you'll like this one.

If you don't like this kind of book, I suggest you spend your ducets on the natural opposite of The Bad Daughter. Check out The Good Son by Nick Cave. More interesting and insightful by multiples, and you get to tap your foot.

1 out of 5 stars she and her mother are a pair........2003-05-13

yes, her mother was horrible -- but so is the author, who sounds like one of the most selfish people ever. the writing is very good, and it's thought-provoking, but you will close the book being glad you do not know julie hilden.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring True Tale........2007-01-12

I read this because it is a true story and I just love good true inspiring stories. This is really quote an interesting book, to everyone else Jennifer would seem to be the picture of success, and then we must remember, no matter what the outside shows, there is something going on inside, that may be distrubing. This is so true with everyone, people think if you are a success, in their mind at least, you have it all, everything is wonderful and perfect for you. Not always the case, this was a great book and took courage for jennifer to lay it all out there. Kudos woman!

3 out of 5 stars Just plain bizarre.......2006-11-26

Granted, hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to judge certain situations from the outside, but one honestly has to wonder why Jennifer Miller at some point did not step outside herself, shake her own shoulders, throw some cold water in her face, and say "wake up!" By the end of the book, I felt just as confused as she did. There is a lack of closure. Is David dead? Was he murdered? Did he have cancer? What about the mysterious woman who was his wife/girlfriend/accomplice/lover? His friends Angelo and Janet? I wanted more explanation of these things. However, I suppose when you don't fully understand something yourself, you cannot fully explain it to others.

                                5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating.......2005-12-28

Enjoyed the book immensly. I was sucked in by David also, but could see it coming and kept thinking "certaintly jennifer will put it to a stop now. surely she'll listen to her inner voice". Scary that there really are people out there like this.

5 out of 5 stars The day I went Missing.......2005-09-01

Awesome book! I have seen some incompetent therapists in my journey, but thank the Goddess none like David in this book. You can just watch him pulling her in. I am a psychology major and this book is really scary because I know so many Licenced Psychologists. Whenever I go for treatment of any kind I look up the proffessionals liscensure to check up on them. In this case it wouldn't have helped. He was a sadistic predetor and he had a licence. The Epilogue is very scary, but don't read it first cause the rest of the book is what makes it scary. Just don't skip it. I even sent this book to a friend of mine so she will know better what to watch out for. A very quick read cause you can't put it down.

3 out of 5 stars Life in the Slow Lane, Please Beware!.......2005-08-03

This is a sad account of a betrayal which could and does happen to anyone who puts her faith in another. It shows the dangers of baring your soul to anyone, even a professional. Jennifer had been born in Topeka, Kansas, to a couple of psychiatrists who moved around a lot.

"I'd actually come to L.A. to be an actress. Nine years earlier I'd arrived from Kansas, via London, Michigan, New York and Chicago." You'd say that she'd been around and seen a lot in her short life. She was ininiated into the world of show biz by doing stand-up comedy. The first step for many Jewish girls unless their dads are in the business. She had written a play, 'Prisoner of Love,' and went into depression when her agent let her down. Coming from the mental background, you might think she'd be the last to fall victim to that illness.

Her story reads like a novel full of betrayal, intrigue and trust in the wrong person. Dr. David Cohen was a con man in addition to being certified to practice counseling. He deceived her and when he was found dead, she felt guilty.

She has also written INHERITING THE HOLY LAND:An American's Search for Hope in the Middle East, and DEAR NEIGHBOR in 2004. She appears to be a wonderful person who let her life get out of control. And, of course, she found the 'wrong' person to turn to for help. She has learned the hard way not to trust those she doesn't know.

I always tend to trust the wrong person. I too went missing for a day plus, when I came back to Knoxville on the Greyhound to search for an apartment after going to Pulaski "to die" and finding a Hell on earth. I was reported to the local police as a 'missing person' even though my son in Nashville knew exactly where I was. No one had helped me to survive there, so I had to set out on my own to get my life in gear again. It happened after 9-11-2001, the day I knew I wasn't dying. Then, I was ready to get back in the groove and live life to its fullest. When I got back here, I was "high" on just being alive. And one person in particular made it worthwhile.

I hope that Jennifer Miller has found her spot on this earth; Heaven knows she deserves it. I had some friends named Cohen in the literary club, and Fanny had a son named David. I hope he wasn't this girl's devil.

                                5 out of 5 stars Patient Betrayal.......2003-10-22

This is a wonderful book and after reading it I really want to be involved in my medical healthcare. The guide to good medical care in the back of the book is great when you are finding a doctor or having a procedure done.

I was amazed what this family went through because of human errors that were covered up. Claiming God's promises was the only way they could survive. A MUST READ for everyone. We need to know about malpractice because it can happen to everyone.
