Book Description
One of the nation's leading management experts shows what it really takes to make a great organization-put people first
How do organizations move beyond merely acknowledging that "human capital" is their greatest asset, and actually implement practices that create true benefits for both employees and the organizations? In this book, Edward Lawler shows how companies can "treat people right" by doing more than simply ensuring good working conditions and good pay. He shows how to build a special relationship between individuals and the organizations they work for-a relationship in which good performance at all levels of the organization pays off for both the company and the individual. The author details specific practices designed to keep employees satisfied but still motivated to continue improving their performance. These techniques include: developing a "brand" as an employer that attracts high achievers, selecting and developing the high achievers, crafting a leadership style that integrates and promotes these actions, and more. Lawler draws on examples from a wide range of companies such as Microsoft, Motorola, IBM, Ford, and others to show how these practices are already at work and successful in some of the world's most enduring organizations. Full of examples and a voice of true conviction, Treat People Right! is a must-have resource for anyone concerned about building and sustaining competitive advantage for the long term.
Edward E. Lawler (Beverly Hills, CA) was named one of the country's leading management experts by BusinessWeek magazine. He is the author of over thirty books, and his articles have appeared in Fortune, the Harvard Business Review, and other national publications. He is Director of the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California (USC) and Professor of Management and Organization in the USC Marshall School of Business.
Customer Reviews:
PEOPLE ARE IMPORTANT.......2003-10-23
As a career management professional, I strongly recommend human resource professionals sit up and read Lawler's book. Start treating your human resources as people in the 21st century. People are important to business success. Lawler has done a critical analysis and used highly illustrative examples to demonstrate the importance of treating people right as part of organisational success strategy. The examples quoted could easily be adapted for implementation in many organisations. I would encourage the CEOs of small and medium sized companies to read this book too. At the beginning of the 21st century, many managers and executives would realise their competitive advantage stems from the creativity, ideas, innovation and enterprise of their people.......so treat people right! Recommended reading for post-graduate programmes in Human Resource, Management and Organizational Behaviour.
Treat People Right: Another Great Read From Ed Lawler.......2003-05-01
Global Business is deeply challenged by how best to make an organization attractive to the talent they need to compete in a dynamic and challenging world. Ed Lawler provides us with a clear set of guidelines in Treat People Right about how best to make our organizations 'winners' in the talent wars we will face in the decades to come. Leaders should make this a 'must read' for their next plane trip and provide multiple copies to those in their organization that can affect the directions to take to gain advantage through people.
What's attractive about this book is that is provides a total look at all the 'tools' organizations have at their disposal to encourage people to help them make their business a success. Treat People Right gives concrete 'how to' examples and case studies that bring Ed's advice home to a busy leader in a form they can put to work in their organization. The book goes beyond theory to execution . . . something that is key to creating the 'win-win' relationship business needs during trying times.
The time is exactly right for Treat People Right. Global organizations looking for ways to step forward and win the talent competition have their guidelines set for them by the world's leading expert on how best to align the performance of the best people with what your business needs to lead the pack in the next decade.
If we could give this book SIX STARS we would do it. This is the kind of book authors say, "Gosh, we wish we had written something as great as that!"

I've been fooled!.......2006-08-28
This book was so vague I have to believe it is an FBI plant to see who would need a book on disguises. I was doing a presentation on Sherlock Holmes and this book was not at all helpfull.
Simplistic.......2006-04-16
What a let down. If you are reasonably intelligent adult and spend 30 minutes thinking about disguise, you should come up with at least 90% of what is in this book. At best this is a VERY simple starting point for broad ideas and general thoughts. If you want help with resources or real technique - look elsewhere.
An excellent book on the art of disguise!.......2000-08-24
Disguise Techniques is one of the finest guides to the covert world ever written. It is filled with practical advice and information aimed at allowing the reader to master the art of disguise with the minimum of fuss. Frequent examples of actual situations in which disguise was utilised are given in this book, including a large number of entertaining factual accounts.
The thing that I liked most about this book is that it focuses more on the mental side of disguise, as instead of just how to change your appearance using make-up etc.(although this is covered in detail) Simply putting on a wig, some make-up and some old clothes will not make the grade in the real world. This book teaches you how to think like someone else, so that even your own family won't be able to recognise you.
I urge you to buy this book if you have any interest in the covert world, or if you just like a good read. With this book and "Methods of Disguise" by John Sample, you'll be able to disapear at will.

Richard Warner's message rings true for small-business owners and corporate managers alike. With insight gained from years in the trenches, Warner gets his point across and provides practical suggestions using his humorous work ship analogy. A must read for anyone who desires to manage their staff more effectively. - Edward Piegza, President & Founder, Classic Journeys
Customer Reviews:
All Hands On Deck a real find!.......2006-10-09
Richard Warner's book, All Hands on Deck, provides an easy to read, enjoyable opportunity to evaluate our own skills and those of our staff, in an effort to be sure that we have the right person in right job. This is a must read for everyone who has ever lived with a poor hiring decision and an absolute must for those mangers who aren't quite sure why their work group are not sailing smoothly.
The book, through a fun shipboard analogy, describes the various personnel needs of any size organization and the pitfalls managers fall into when we don't hire the right employees. I shared the book with a colleague as she had several good candidates for an open position and was trying to determine which candidate to hire. The next day, she returned the book and excitedly reported that she now knew she was looking for a First Mate to complement the other crewmembers on her staff.
For an insightful and amusing look at yourself and your crew, read this small, yet practical and thought provoking work from an author who uses his years of experience to shed light on ours.
Must have for employers AND job seekers!.......2006-10-05
A wonderfully well put together story about how to identify who will work in the environment we spend so much of our lives in - WORK! While there are TONS of employer and employee who to hire and how to get hired books, this one provides excellent real world examples and relatable experiences. I challenge anyone to pick up this book and not recognize your boss, your co-workers, your own employees-- AND YOU! The empowerment is to understand when to change and when to let go!
Enough of my words, read and enjoy!!!
Book Description
"A shocking document that reveals how the great reforms once promised by this landmark decision were systematically undermined."Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the doctrine of "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., was not even two at the time, and his family, farm workers in southern California, had scant knowledge of how keenly the ruling would affect them. In All Deliberate Speed Ogletree examines the personal ramifications of the decision for him and his familyhis childhood in the wake of the Brown decision, his student days at Stanford and Harvard Law, his immersion in the Boston busing crisisand its meaning for all Americans. Presenting a vivid pageant of historical characters including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Earl Warren, Anita Hill, and Clarence Thomas, Ogletree discusses the ambivalence of our judicial system, the increasing legal challenges to affirmative action, and the issue of reparations. Informed throughout by brilliant legal insight, All Deliberate Speed compellingly traces the history of race and integration in American society, and will promote intense debate and reconsideration.

Professor Ogletree Puts You There.......2004-09-12
Professor Ogletree has been part of or witnessed some of the greatest moments in the struggle. This book puts you in the moment and gives an incredibly personal and up-close account of the events. Riveting.
Great!.......2004-07-14
This is great book. It gives the real story behind brown vs the board of education. Also, it gives a lot of history relating to the struggles of black people in the last 100 years.
"Bearing Witness to the Truth" -- All Deliberate Speed.......2004-05-26
All Deliberate Speed bears witness to the truth about our two party education system. This book should be on the required reading list for all students in both high school and college. It is a must read for law students who take, or contemplate taking constitutional law courses or anyone who truly wants to understand the impact of Brown v. Board of Education.
All Deliberate Speed speaks the truth. In some chapters the author gives you hope and in other chapters, the author allows the reader to ponder the future. Reading and understanding this book should help eliminate un-substantiated bias against integration. However, there is no question that the author points out the damage racial segregation, housed and surrounded by inequality, does to our society.
For example, in chapter six, Ogletree clearly exposes the reader to the fact that our government denied African-Americans full citizenship rights through legislation, judicial decisions as well as Jim Crow customs and behaviors.
Was the denial of full citizenship rights (education, accommodations, housing, voting) for African-Americans a grant of "affirmative action" for the white majority? Does the phrase "all deliberate speed" give or take away from the impact or the seriousness of the Brown decisions? Ogletree addresses these question and others in his 'adept' analysis of the decisions in Brown v. Board I and in Brown v. Board II.
Ogletree masterfully points out that a proper education includes, but is not limited to ethnic diversity, safe buildings, good teacher pay, desks, books, parental involvement, technology, etc. A proper education for all supports ones ability to successfully integrate oneself into our society and is germane to our survival as a nation. All Deliberate Speed is an excellent, excellent book. Easy to read, easy to understand, provocative, educational and truthful. Separate but equal is inherently un-equal.
Riveting!.......2004-05-25
As a first gerneration recipient of the benefits of Brown v Board of Education, it was enlightning to get a up-close view of the behind the scene goings-on of the attempts to stall and erode the promise of "Brown". This is a must read for the public..... to be aware of the diabolical machinations that go on in the back rooms of power to attempt to deny the basic and fundamental right to a good education.
Professor Ogletree illustrates that the promise of "Brown" remains unfulfilled and that we cannot stop fighting the resistance to that promise.

In the 1960s, Judith Rollins was working for CORE in Louisiana, where she was housed by a remarkable woman--Odette Harper Hines, whose lifelong activism benefited the NAACP, the WPA Writers Project, and the Red Cross along with countless people on whose behalf she worked for racial justice. Recorded by Rollins over eight years, this is a spirited oral history of an extraordinary woman whose public life intersected with such figures as Walter White, Thurgood Marshall, Ralph Ellison, and many others.
Book Description
With intelligence, insight, and humor, Odette Harper Hines describes her lifea life that reversed the pattern of the Great Migration by beginning in prosperity in the urban North and moving into the small-town South. Recorded by Judith Rollins over eight years, this intimate narrative is an unusual collaboration between two African American women who represent two generations of civil rights activists.
Born in New York into a comfortable family, Hines' activism began I the Abyssinian Baptist Church in her teens and continued throughout her life as she witnessed the Great Depression in Harlem, worked on the WPA Writers Project, became publicity director of the NAACP, and volunteered for the Red Cross in Europe during WWII. When she moved to Louisiana in 1946, she continued to challenge racial injustice and risked her life to house civil rights workers in the early 1960s (Rollins, among them). She later started and directed the Headstart Program in her parish.
Throughout this narrative, Hines describes her relationships with such figures as Mary McLeod Bethune, Adam Clayton Powell, Walter White, Thurgood Marshall, Ella Baker, Marcus Garvey, Claude McKay, Ralph Ellison, and many others. Yet Hines' memoir is not only about her public life. She courageously reveals her personal life and private pain. Twenty-eight photographs mostly from Hines' family albumaccentuate this oral history that is, as Rollins states in her Introduction, "a complex and textured portrait of an extraordinary twentieth century American woman."

Book Description
Song for My Father is a daughter's memoir of her father, Charles M. Stokes, a prominent African-American member of the National Republican Party. Known as "Stokey," he was born just forty years after the abolition of slavery. But by the time he became a pioneer in the fields of law, legislation, and politics -- during the turbulent and transformative 1960s and 70s -- contemporary associations of the GOP with the "party of Lincoln" had faded. Stokes's choice to remain a Republican against the tide of black Democratic political loyalty took courage. He would live to become Seattle's first black state legislator and serve as Washington State's first African-American district court judge.
With Song for My Father, Ms. Stokes pays tribute to a man whose love for his country, his family, and his people made a world of difference for generations to come. Stokes's life is a compelling example of what American Dreams are made of.

A True American Family Memoir in Living Color.......2004-11-22
Song for My Father: An American Story by Stephanie Stokes Oliver is a memoir of her African American Republican family, her life in Seattle, Washington and the career of her father, Charles Stokes, who became a judge and legislator in Washington State. Her story details the racism and politics of growing up Black in the 1950s and 1960s.
The story is actually a memoir of both parents. Her mother, Josephine was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. Though she grew up in Jim Crow conditions, her middle-class family life sheltered her from the most hideous racism. She was taught to hold her head up and not bow down to Whites. She went on to attend Spellman College in Atlanta. Josephine was known for her exquisite dress and style; at one time she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. She eventually though became a librarian and school teacher.
Charles Stokes was born in Kansas, a staunch Republican state. He was the son of a preacher and came from a community of hard working, Black folk who had migrated from the Deep South to build a life free from racism and to educate their children. Charles and his brothers went to college, he himself went to law school and after working for a number of government agencies, and working for the Republican party, moved to Seattle. There he continued his work in the Republican party, working with prominent men including Richard Nixon. He eventually went into politics, running for Lt. Governor of Washington, which he lost and eventually became a legislator.
Stephanie grew up in integrated neighborhoods in Seattle, went through the usual teen-age angst and self-centered behavior. She clashed with her mother over wearing a natural hair style and the Black Power movement. She also clashed with her father over his conservative views about Negroes progress in a changing America. She recounts that she was ridiculed one election year when she was the only Negro child to admit her parents were voting for the Republican candidate. There are memories of church life in Seattle and family trips, particularly one road trip where they were pulled over in Texas and questioned about their late model car.
This was a poignant look at a girl and her family growing up in the United States with the duality of everyday life as an American family not unlike the Donna Reed Show or Leave it to Beaver only in shades of Black that definitely gave it more color in lessons of life.

Book Description
A warrior trained from birth to kill demons, Sango is rescued from death and turned against Inu-Yasha by Naraku, the crafty demon whose manipulations have tormented the heroic group repeatedly. Will Sango finally realize just who her true enemy is, or will Inu-Yasha pay the ultimate price at the hands of this expert demon hunter?
Customer Reviews:
SANGO HUNTS INUYASHA.......2006-07-28
Naraku has tricked the demon killer Sango into thinking that Inuyasha slaughtered her whole village and has even given her a Shikon shard to keep her battered and dying body alive long enough to satiate her revenge! Inuyasha and pals ARE at the demon hunter village, but not for the reason Naraku lied about. They have come seeking out the origin of the Sacred Jewel. They will find out the true story of its creation IF they can convince Sango that they're the good guys and girl of this story, and that Naraku is her family's and village's true killer!
What can I say about Inuyasha that I haven't said already? Tons! I came to the manga after watching all the anime episodes of Inuyasha up to its current releases, so going back to the beginning of the story is like rereading old history, but it's cool. It still galls me the extent to which Naraku has ruined so many people's lives, and really in the end, he's doing this all out of love for Kikyo! Spurned or impossible love makes for dangerous motivations. I think that's a stroke of Takahashi's genius, that one of the most evil villains in manga operates out of love. Another thing I think about after reading Volume 10 are the great characters. Takahashi has made them all likeable and complex with their own motivations and goals. If just one of these main characters was annoying or difficult to like, it would've ruined the whole series. With Sango, we've finally completed the assemblage of heroes that has killing Naraku as their main goal. Let the hunt begin!
A Great Manga.......2005-09-18
I love Inu-Yasha and this manga is great as the rest are. I especailly like this one because it starts with the second half of when Sango, my favorite character, comes in.
The story continues.......2005-08-02
Inuyasha (1997.)
INTRODUCTION:
When I was younger, I was a big-time anime fan. Although little of the Japanese animation was being shown on American TV back then, what little I saw, I liked. It fast became apparent that the Japanese had a much better way of creating animation - one that fused seriousness and comedy perfectly, and one that would appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. And in recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime altogether. However, I had always remained curious, and in the more recent years I had heard of a series called Inuyasha that was constantly getting praised. I watched a few episodes, and it wasn't hard to see why. The series was created by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 (a series that remains VERY popular.) Although I liked the episodes I saw on TV, they started somewhere in the middle of things, and I wanted to get the story from the beginning. Since the episode DVDs were too pricey, I opted for the manga (comic/graphic novel) version (most animes are based on manga.) Read on for my review.
STORYLINE OVERVIEW:
Inuyasha has one of those stories that's EXTREMELY tough to put into words, but I'll try my best. Bear with me here, people. Several centuries ago in Japan, there were ongoing wars, between humans and demons alike. In modern-day japan, a girl named Kagome lives on a shrine with her family, and one day one of the demons from the past pulls her down the shrine's well. The well is a linking point between the modern age and the age in the distant past, in which wars were raging constantly. She is revealed to be the reincarnation of a priestess who, several years earier, killed an evil half-demon called Inuyasha. But, through several odd twists of fate, she is forced to join forces with the resurrected Inuyasha, to recover the shards of a sacred jewel, which could be used to greatly increase the powers of and demon, good or evil, who gets their hands on them. Although reluctant to help at first, Kagome finally decides to help Inuyasha, realizing that the well is the warp point between times, she doesn't want to put her family in immediate danger. (I KNOW, that's not the best possible summary. If you want a better one, visit one of the various fansites.)
OPINIONS:
Overall, I am very satisfied with this series - it's been a LONG time since I liked an anime and/or manga this much. Rumiko Takahashi has once again succeded beautifully, combining seriousness with comedy, and creating an excellent storyline fusing history and fantasy alike. It was great to finally get the proper introduction to the series. I urge you to get the proper introduction yourself, as well. If you just start watching/reading somewhere in the middle of the series, you may be left dazed and confused and judge the series based on an awkward first impression. DON'T make that mistake.
CURRENT EDITION:
The edition of this manga currently available is actually a second edition - the first edition is now out of print and is no longer readily available. I'm VERY satisfied with the way the Inuyasha manga got ported to America. First and most importantly, it's uncensored. Many manga series get heavy editing when they get an American release, as do their anime counterparts. Another thing I am happy about is they "Americanized" the reading style, while at the same time staying true to the original projected vision. For those of you who don't know, the Japanese read from right to left, and sometimes mangas are ported in that fashion. Being an American, I'm used to reading from left to right, so I was glad to see that it was ported into English in a "left to right" reading style (and all of the images have been reversed to reflect the change and to stay true to the original vision.) Likewise, these graphic novels are almost two hundred pages each, and since each one costs less than ten bucks, they're a pretty good deal. Overall, it's great to see Inuyasha didn't butchered the way some series do.
OVERALL:
Inuyasha is the best anime/manga series to come along for me in a long time. It's not hard to see why so many people call it one of their favorites. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since the manga came first and is, therefore, Takahashi's original vision. Likewise, the DVDs are kind of a rip-off pricewise. But whether you decide to do the anime, the manga, or both, you're likely to agree it's an excellent series.
Enter sango Demon slayer .......2004-10-13
This book is great I like the part were sango throughs her boomer rang[the boomer rang bone] at Inuyasha. The main story is sango thinks Inuyasha slayed her village so she goes after him.
with non stop action and plenty of humor this book is amust get for any Inuyasha fan.
Sango arrives bearing more than her boomerang..........2003-05-29
...she also has a major grudge. Naraku has tricked her into believing that it was Inu Yasha that murdered her village, and she is out for revenge. Using her incredibly big boomerang (it's taller than she is!), she attempts to slay the innocent dog demon. But when wounded, she is cared for by her prey. Of course, when she finds out Naraku's plans, she is none too happy. After telling the group a story, she joins up with them.
Things will definitely get more interesting from here on out...

Keep 'em coming!.......2006-04-18
People, if you gave this book, or any of them, for that matter, a bad rating because of murder, nudity, blah, blah, blah, then please, you must understand, like someone before has said, that Japanese culture is different than ours. Also, if you're offended by that, watch the stupid version of InuYasha on the otherwise awsome ADULT SWIM!! Get to know something before you buy it! Watch the show!!!!
Still excellent........2005-08-11
Buy this manga, it's excellent, Inu Yasha is a great series. It's amazing how Rumiko Takahashi manages to keep up such a good pace, and believe me folks there up to manga 40 in japan in it's still great. Takahashi san stated that she is going to to 500 chapters or more, at the present moment she is up to chapter 420 or 421.
Also, people who gave this one star, STOP COMPLAINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you find the nudity and violence so offensive then dont read the darn book!!!!! Also don't you have anything better to do than complain about a comic book, I mean it's not even very violent, it's like 13 and up, so I have no idea what people are complaining about. Also if you have problems with a little thing Inu Yasha being too violent, don't expect to watch much anime during your lifetime.
Well all said and done, Inu yasha rocks, and it will continue to do so!!!!!!
Wonderful new issue!.......2005-05-28
First of all, let me respond to the previous reviewers. Japanese culture is NOT American culture, therefore familiarize yourself with the material before you buy it. Many kids have been exposed to Inu Yasha on ADULT SWIM on Cartoon Network. Yes, this is meant for adults! It is violent, and there is cussing. Please be informed before you write a nasty review.
Secondly, a certain level of maturity should be used when reading manga that contains nudity. Again, the Japanese culture is more accepting of nudity, and does not directly sexualize it the way American culture does. We're all born naked, you know, so get over it or read something else. Being naked isn't bad, you know.
Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment of Inu Yasha. Rumiko Takahashi just gets better and better, and I can't wait for the next issue to continue the story.
The Best!! .......2005-05-23
