4 out of 5 stars a subtle mix of interesting and boring.......2004-09-05

Parts of this book were interesting- I especially liked the first couple of chapters, where Moore shows how explosively the Jewish community in Miami and Los Angeles grew, and why these cities were so attractive to American Jews. She also tries to explain why Jewish-black cooperation was so common; in Miami Beach, both were fighting against similar types of housing discrimination, and Jews had no convincing reason to oppose fair housing for blacks while opposing it for themselves. (Although it is not clear why Los Angeles Jews adopted similar political views when they seem to have had far less discrimination to contend with).

But much of the middle of the book settles into the rut of blow-by-blow community history, with an unexciting listing of which rabbi did what in which neighborhood. She generalizes about differences between Sun Belt and Frost Belt Jews without backing up her generalizations, she barely mentions Orthodox Jews, and she barely mentions the evolution of Sunbelt Jewish communities over the past few decades.

On balance I am glad I looked at this book, but am not sure if I really needed to read every page and every chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Miami : City of Dreams.......2001-03-15

Hi, I just LOVED this book. It shows Miami at its best! The photography is the best I have seen, with colors that seem to jump right off the pages & into your lap. The clarity of each & every picture seems like a photograph in itself. If you would like a book on Miami & its sites,......................THIS IS IT! Congrats to Alan S. Maltz. I was very, very impressed to say the least & it is one book that will always remain on my table (in the family room) for guests to admire & I love to watch their expressions as they ooooh & aaah after each turning page. I live in NYC but the book remains a hit here in the BIG APPLE! I am sure that it took many years of hard labor to bring this book about & I would highly reccomend it, & my compliments once again to some of the finest photography I have seen in any book yet. If you want to send someone a feeling of Miami, send them this book! I've lived in Miami about a year and a half and was looking for a pictorial demonstration to send to a friend who has never been here. This book captures and draws you in to all aspects of the city: nature, architecture, culture, glamour, and grit. You can sense the vitality of the city.

            Book Description

From the cult classic The Wicker Man to the blood–thirsty Count Dracula, Christopher Lee has been the face of cinema villainy for decades. In Lord of Misrule, Lee tells the story of his exceptional career, in films like The Curse of Frankenstein, the James Bond classic The Man with the Golden Gun, and more recently, in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. After appearing in more than 300 films, and a legend in his own right, Lee undertook one of the most demanding roles of his career as Saruman in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings. Shortly after, as one of the most powerful adversaries in the Star Wars canon, Lee proved that at 80, he is still a commanding screen presence. Written with self–deprecating wit and laced with hilarious anecdotes, Lord of Misrule is a marvelous career history of the man The Guardian called “the coolest actor on the planet.”

Bought this as a gift for someone but actually read it before giving it to them. A funny, well-written book; Lee is a natural storyteller and this book will please both longtime and newfound fans.

5 out of 5 stars Lord of Misrule: The Autobiography of Christopher Lee.......2005-08-27

One of my all time favorite actors, the legendary thespian Christopher Lee's autobiography is a fascinating tome filled with countless stories of working with everyone from Errol Flynn to Toshiro Mifune, all the while adopting a self-depreciating tone that permeates the book, Lee's fascinating life encompasses many world events, and he talks in detail about his family life, and the numerous films he's starred in. However noticeably absent are his thoughts on his career making turn as Dracula. But considering the hundreds of fantastic films he has acting in, it is of diminutive consequence. Like Sean Connery with 007, he was given fame by a role that he now wishes to distance himself from. Fair enough, considering films like The Wicker Man (One of Lee's favourites) and Sleepy Hollow altering people's perceptions of the actor. Regaling readers with his thorough tales of on-set antics while filming the James Bond film Man with the Golden Gun, working with Steven Spielberg on 1941, and working with directors like Tim Burton, Guy Hamilton, Terence Fisher, George Lucas and Peter Jackson. Lee warms to memories of his long time on-screen acting partner Peter Cushing and their work together. You realize just how important a role Lee has played in cinema history. And despite his numerous Dracula and monster roles (Which aren't that many despite critics waffling) he has displayed in recent years just how much range he can provide, from serious drama in Jinnah, Science Fiction with the Star Wars prequels and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What a treat to have the master of movies take time to pen his thoughts. Without this book, there would be a large gap in history. This is a very welcome history lesson in Hollywood movie making, and leave s a lasting impression on readers who discover just how prolific an actor he is. Fantastic stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Lee is a true Master!.......2005-08-10

This is a truly fascinating read and account by the actor who has made the biggest contribution to the film industry-ever! He is my favourite actor and I have a signed photograph of his proudly hanging on my bedroom wall. I am 15 years old and have never found another person my age who has the same respect for him that I have-he is a magnificent actor!
On the book itself, it is very well written and has a whole collection of photographs that are very interesting. Christopher Lee has a very clever and effective way of telling his countless stories and I am sure everybody will find it very enjoyable!
And just for the record he needs to be knighted and also win an honorary academy award right away!

3 out of 5 stars Not enough on films.......2004-11-25

Christopher Lee has made many movies, but doesn't talk about many of them in this book. Instead, the first half of the book is endless family background and his war experiences. Finally, he talks about some of his films, only to repeatedly interrupt with golf stories. His look back at old friends (Cushing, Price, Karloff, even Robert Bloch) are warm and wonderful, but are much too short, barely covering one chapter. The book does have several good points, in addition to his remembering old friends. He never boasts about any of his performances, nor does he put down anyone he's ever worked with on film.

2 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for a scholarly look at Mardi Gras.......2006-11-18

After reading this book, I understand that there is much more to New Orleans' Mardi Gras than a drunken good time. Yet I am frustrated because Gill did little more than illuminate many promising lines of inquiry, without satisfying any of them.

I concur with another reviewer ("Temerous erudition") that Gill's organization is totally scattershot. He piles on the interesting tales, but without much of a conceptual scheme. Intriguing starts are made, then snapped off abruptly; and it's on to the next thought, like literary ADD. I knew I was not in the presence of a first-rate book when, in chapter 2, after introducing the Louisiana slave rebellion of 1811, Gill ends the one paragraph devoted to it thus:

"Thus ended the largest slave uprising in the history of the United States; though a failure, it at least encouraged somewhat more liberal treatment of slaves as well as free people of color for most of the antebellum era."

And then we are off to a different subject. The reader is given a tantalizing view of a fascinating incident--the largest slave uprising in US history! But the parade needs to keep moving and the trail is lost in a blur. It feels like the sort of thing you'd hear from a New Orleans tour guide while walking through the French Quarter.

Also, in this (as in many other instances), Gill does not substantiate his statements. What did the 'liberal treatment' consist of? Is the reader simply expected to look up the incident in an encyclopedia? If I had not read other sources, I would not know of the Louisiana "Code Noir" to which Gill is presumably referring. In a work purporting to be serious history, this is an abuse of the reader's time and money. (And when the sentence is deconstructed, does it really have any meaning? 'Somewhat more liberal' treatment for 'most' of the antebellum period? Without specific examples, this sentence simply ups the word count without saying much. It's the sort of thing my university professors would have torn apart with red pen. Ironic, then, that this is a university press book.)

It's not utterly worthless, hence two stars instead of one. If you are a researcher looking to write a really definitive social and cultural history, this book is a decent place to start as a roadmap--if you fleshed out all of the false starts made by Gill, you'd have a really good book on your hands. Everyone else: caveat emptor!

1 out of 5 stars Missing the point.......2000-08-19

To consider carnival in New Orleans through the prism of each krewe's exclusivity is to miss the point entirely. Despite the author's contention to the contrary, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is the most inclusive celebration in America. Not because anyone can be a member of a specific group, but because any group of people can band together and create their own association. Of course, what most observers omit entirely (for convenience sake) is the fact that staging a carnival parade and ball takes so much effort and money that the people who dream of staging this type of celebration ultimately find it to be too much.

Those of us who trace our membership in the "old-line krewes" four or five generations back have something to be genuinely proud of, critics be damned. We will never erase 150 years of proud parading tradition for the over-sensitive, cheap, rabble rousing politics of a political class that cannot sustain itself except by explicit race baiting and class warfare. Though we have become the whipping boys of the liberal elite, we are unbowed and will be ever so.

2 out of 5 stars Temerous erudition = persnickitously gauche anachronisms.......2000-06-18

This book is jam packed with amazing stories. Unfortuantely Gill's inability to organize information by chronology or theme, and his insistence on using as many big words as possible, as well as paragraphs that never seem to end or make a point, make it really hard to follow. I frequently found myself skipping back several pages to try to figure out who he was talking about and why, and was generally unable to do anything but completely lose track of the loose thread of narative that appears occasionaly throughout chapters with names that seemingly have little to do with their contents. Too bad, because apparently a lot of people died and fought and drank and screwed. In what order, I will have to look elsewhere to find out.

4 out of 5 stars Down and Dirty.......2000-05-04

Until I was sixteen, I went to Mardi Gras every year. I was therefore fascinated to read James Gill's account of the twisted and bizarre history of New Orleans' biggest tourism cash cow (albeit one which should not be kept alive through longstanding racist shibboleths), and see what sort of political and social struggles underpinned the history of the old-style Krewes (which, incidentally, I never got to see, my family--and eventually myself--preferring the big flashy ones like Endymion and Bacchus). Gill's accompanying history of New Orleans is even better, yielding many interesting and little known facts. Unfortunately, one gets so wrapped up in stirring episodes like the checkered postbellum career of James Longstreet that the occasional Mardi Gras asides actually get to be irritating (which surely was not the point of the book). Fortunately, Gill's concluding focus on the "battle for Mardi Gras" between Councilwomen Dorothy Mae Taylor and Peggy Wilson brings the story into an exciting present day context which will be unsurprising to anyone familiar with the running circus of lunacy that is Louisiana politics (although it's nice to have confirmation that female politicians can be almost as boorish and intolerant as male politicians). This book, along with John Kennedy Toole's A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES and Jerry Strahan's MANAGING IGNATIUS, is essential reading for anyone looking to learn about New Orleans.

5 out of 5 stars Much More than Mardi Gras.......2000-02-22

Lords of Misrule is the best history survey of New Orleans I have come across. The idea of using Mardi Gras (Carnival) as the hook for a general history is inspired: the cultural and political history of New Orleans is intimately intertwined with Carnival, and Carnival remains fascinating even when Louisiana politics are repellant. Gill has done his homework, studying promary sources and skeptically drawing his own conclusions, which is absolutely necessary in a place whose history-writing victors have liberally invented romantic myths for 150 years. In serious histories of Louisiana, it's easy to find victims but hard to find heroes, because all sides of each situation are tainted by fluid combinations of racism, violence, and corruption. Lords of Misrule deals with this problem by presenting Mardi Gras as an entity with a life of its own that somehow is able to stand firm on the swampy terrain of Louisiana political and racial history. The writing is quite good, with occasional Oscar Wilde-esque flourishes and frequent ironic double-negative descriptions (e.g. "not unknown" as a way of saying "frequent"). Several of the chapters cover events of the 1990's which Gill witnessed firsthand as a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. These tend to be a bit overly detailed for my taste, but it doesn't bring the book down much. I would be interested in an update chapter, in which Gill discusses the new Krewes (most notably Orpheus, started by Harry Connick Jr) that arose in the mid-90's to replace the ossified old-line Krewes whose feelings were hurt in the tussle over the integration of Carnival. It seems to me that things really worked out for the best, but I haven't lived in New Orleans for over a decade. Doubtless the full story--well told, by a fair and erudite writer like Gill--is much more complicated and much more interesting.

            4 out of 5 stars A fine romance.......2003-01-26

I stumbled across this book in a used bookshop and took it home on a whim. Am I ever glad I did! This unusual and well-written romance was one of the better ones I've read in a long time. I was very sad when I searched Amazon and could find no other books by this author.

The story centers around Cat, a London thief whose family was murdered by a powerful man and Nicholas D'Avenant, the Lord of Misrule whose reputation has been damaged by some of the same people who threaten Cat. The two join forces uneasily out of necessity(he's doing intelligence work for Elizabeth I and she's trying to avenge her family) and gradually fall in love.

Watching the battle-scarred hero and heroine learn to trust and love was wonderful and the action-packed story was fun to read. The author had a good grasp not just on history, but on the spirit of the times and that made this quite a rewarding read. The flowing writing style, unusual characters and attention to detail make this book a winner. I would recommend hunting this down as soon as you can!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book so much that I read it twice!.......1999-06-09

When Catrienne first meets Nicholas she is in awe of his boldness. Her friend Jasper is a great character and I can relate him to my brother, Robert. Nicholas is exactly the type of person that I would like to fall in love with. He is strong, cunning, swift, and romantic. Catrienne is exactly like me. She is stubborn and very determined to get what she wants. I really love historical romances and am looking for more books of Mrs. Maynard's. She is a brilliant author. I read this book every chance that I got and I also read until four o'clock one morning. I finally finished it.

            Book Description

This popular trilogy features Tranter's Lords of Misrule, A Folly of Princes, and The Captive Crown. This compelling collection of novels reveals how the House of Stewart managed to cling to power, despite being a family torn by hatred and jealousy. Chief among the Stewart's enemies were the Douglases, and when the second Earl of Douglas was slain at the Battle of Otterburn, the Stewarts were suspected of foul play. The deadly rivalry between the two houses was to remain undiminished for the next two generations. 612 pp 5 x 8

5 out of 5 stars Stewarts holding and Douglas rising.......2006-03-15

I just can't say enough about Nigel Tranter. He takes historical fiction to a new level. This is how it could have been. This trilogy covers the Scottish kingdom through the last days of Robert II, through Robert III and into the beginning days of James I in prison in England. All the events are through James "Jamie" Douglas, the eldest but illegitimate son of James Douglas, Lord of Dalkeith, and the wealthiest noble in Scotland and head of the second most powerful branch of the up and coming Douglas clan. In book one "Lords of Misrule", we see Jamie become a lord in his own right and come to court after he sees the murder of the Earl Douglas and seeks to find the killer. Robert, Earl of Fife and Menteith, second son of Robert II also sets himself up as Governor and soon to be Regent. A great side story of the legendary Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Bandanoch, Earl of Buchan really moves the story along. And in the end we see Jamie engaged to Mary Stewart, a illegitimate daughter of Robert II.
In book two "A folly of Princes" Robert III has come to the throne but proves a weak and sad king who is run by his family. All are slowly set up and pushed aside by Robert, now Duke of Albany and Governor of Scotland. Jamie falls in with Robert III's heir Prince David who begins as a great match to out-wit and supercede his uncle Robert as Governor but ultimately fails. This leads to book three "The Captive Crown" where Jamie is forced into the highlands and befriends Alexander Stewart, son of the late Alexander "Wolf of Bandenoch" Stewart together they try to counter Albany's power and protect the surviving Prince James. All the while the Douglas clan continues to marry Stewart brides and gain titles and land. Then add in the ursurper Henry, now King of England who wishes to reinstate his ancestor Edward I, the longshanks, policy towards Scotland. A great, great read.

5 out of 5 stars The Power in the Kingdom.......2000-07-03

I was sad to hear of Nigel Tranter's passing just days into the new millenium. This great historical writer who had the unique gift of making us see, hear, and feel the heartbeat of times long past, of kings half forgotten whose reputations were laid to rest often as quickly as they were.

Robert the Bruce, hero of Bannockburn, was the grandfather of Robert II by his daughter Marjory, wife of Walter Stewart. The kings from this union came to be known as the Stewarts, and Robert II and his son Robert III were two of the weakest. Both, prematurely doddering and unwilling or unable to wield the power in the kingdom, yielded the real power to Robert Stewart, Earl of Fife and Menteith. This last Robert is a character of the type frequently found in Tranter novels: a stern, unyielding master of realpolitik. (See James Stewart in WARDEN OF THE QUEEN'S MARCH for a reincarnation.)

The action is seen through the eyes of the fictional Jamie Douglas, descendent of the famed "Black Douglas" of Robert the Bruce's day, who tries to help shore up the monarchy for David, Duke of Rothesay, oldest son of Robert III.

Scottish history can be incredibly murky and involved at times, and that's what makes it so fascinating. Tranter has a gift for breathing life into periperal characters and putting them into play across a wide landscape and over a long period of time.

My favorite subplot involves the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, who burns down the Cathedral of Elgin, the so-called Lantern of the North, because of a dispute with its bishop. The Wolf's son, Alexander , becomes a steadfast friend and ally of Jamie Douglas.

It was my great fortune to read this trilogy while criss-crossing Scotland. I would recommend someone new to Tranter starting with the Robert the Bruce trilogy, but after that, read THE STEWART TRILOGY.

5 out of 5 stars The best historical fiction I have ever read........1998-07-02

In this tale you follow the bastard son of a Douglas lord who in his first battle is knighted on the field for protecting the slain body of the Earl of Douglas. His loyalty to the earls' wife, the House of Douglas and to Scotland draw this heroic figure in to the intrigue behind members of the House of Stuart's tragic betrayal of the Scottish Crown.

Nigel Tranter has a rare and amazing gift for word craft. His ability to draw you into a tale is second to none. At every turn of the page I found my self reaching for a sword to help the young Jimmy Douglas.

              Book Description

The Lords of Misrule, X. J. Kennedy's seventh volume of poetry, exhibits his characteristic blend of wit, intellectual curiosity, and formal mastery. The sixty poems collected here explore a wide range of subjects: a scathing curse on a sneak-thief, a wry ballad of Henry James and his not-quite lover Constance Fenimore Woolson, an elegy for Allen Ginsberg, incisive views of contemporary Egypt, a serio-comic meditation on the relic of St. Teresa of Avila which Spain's General Franco kept at his bedside, and a response to the events of September 11. Like the controlled frenzy of medieval Christmas festivities presided over by the appointed Lords of Misrule, Kennedy's poems possess a chaotic humor and frenetic energy held within tight metrical bounds. In his latest collection, Kennedy confirms his reputation as one of America's most accomplished and engaging poets.

              Praise for Dark Horses:

"The poetry is mordant, funny, and even sometimes rather frightening; the poet, so much in control of his formal means." -- Emily Grosholz, Hudson Review

"These are beautiful poems by one of the best poets we have." -- Richard Moore, Sewanee Review

"Well, here he goes again, America's finest formalist, with a simply delightful collection of new poems." -- Paul Ruffin, Texas Review

"Kennedy's 'wit' is not mere cleverness. Rather it combines accuracy of perception with the metaphoric imagination that, with his ability to juggle fixed forms, enlivens the best poems in this satisfying collection... In these poems we are connected -- to the formal tradition, to the social and natural worlds in which we live, and to each other." -- Ghita Orth, New England Review

                    Book Description

This is a medieval fantasy with modern spunk. It's a drama with pratfalls. It's magical realism with good-natured villains and unexpected heroes. It's a quest for adventure that rarely travels beyond a city's limits. It is Misrule, and Raurdyn Bluedragon is its newest champion.

I hated to see the end come but was thrilled when I discovered the Lord of Misrule is alive and the author has other Bigger plans for him.

I laughed, I cried, I was entertained and best of all, I look forward to The Lord of Misrule coming into my home again. The dialogue kept me on my toes. The characters were humanized to me and the gypsies are somebody to be reckoned with. I hated to see the end of the book come, but am encouraged by the fact that he is still alive and the author has Bigger plans for this rascal.
