Book Description

With help from Mama and Papa (who get a little advice from Grizzly Gran), Sister Bear learns to stop her nervous nail biting before it turns into a bad habit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reward Jar.......2007-07-25

Sister Bear bites her nails. She finds it hard to quit. An idea is come up that every time she does not bite her nails, she gets money put into a jar. Then that money is hers to keep.

5 out of 5 stars child guidance is suggested.......2007-06-12

i find the berenstain bears book collection educational. this one was (surprisingly) an eye-opener for me as a parent as well. i followed the tip given here to stop my child from bitting his fingernails - and it worked.

3 out of 5 stars Good children's book, but puts ideas in kids' heads.......2004-07-20

As always, Stan and Jan Berenstain do an excellent job writing an entertaining children's story. They add a lesson to it, but I wouldn't feel right not saying this book can actually put the idea of nail biting into a child's head. I am a 20 year old confirmed nail-biter, and reading this book in Kindergarden was my first introduction to it. I still rate it 3 stars because it is well written and entertaining, but this lesson may entice some children rather than get them to avoid a bad habit.

4 out of 5 stars Hard To Break........2002-09-09

Bad habits are hard to break is a lesson that many adults don't even know very well. Most young children don't even have a clue what a habit is, let alone know the difference between a bad habit and a good one. This edition of The Berenstain Bears not only explains what a habit is, it also illustrates the difference between good and bad habits, and offers a helpful way how possibly to break a bad habit youngsters may have.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and meaningful!.......2000-09-23

Once again Stan and Jan have made a complex issue simple for the child. I love the way they explain what a habit is and why it is hard to break. Sister's bad habit is biting her nails but we substitute whatever we want (nose picking etc.)and our children (age 2 and 6) roar with laughter as they learn that a habit isn't easy to quit...but you can do it with practice. We love this book. I even gave it to a college student who bites her nails and she loves it too.

Book Description

The first four books of the wildly popular Time Warp Trio series are now in one value-priced boxed set! Whether the gang's fighting off the Black Knight in the middle of Camelot, practicing magic tricks on Blackbeard and his pirates, stampeding cattle in the Old West, or running from a woolly mammoth, one thing is for sure: no one's ever bored when the Time Warp Trio's around!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Knights are Meant to be Respected.......2006-12-19

I didn't like Time Warp Trio because when it began it was mostly about the knight. As you read on, it tells about the giant and the dragon. It made the knight look not very smart and like he had no power. The kids basically looked like they had all the power, even without armor. If I were the author, I would have had more action with the knight and the kids and the knight would have been the greatest fighter or he would have been up there with the greatest heroes. -LL

2 out of 5 stars Poor langauge and inappropriate humor.......2005-12-31

I was very shocked when I read this book to find that so many people deem these appropriate for children. They do have some information for the kids to learn from (the reason I chose them originally) but the way the children talk and act is terrible! I had only thumbed through one and chose it from the library from my son, then I let him read the rest of the series and suddenly had him calling names and being disrespectful and LAUGHING about it!

I was really disappointed. I think things can be funny without name calling and using poor language. I am just glad I haven't ever purchased any.

4 out of 5 stars A little too much like magic tree house.......2005-09-01

These books are really nice, but my daughter has already read a bunch of the magic tree house books and these are just too much like them.. she thinks these are funnier but the idea has no sparkle for her any more.. but I would recommend these books if you haven't started reading the tree house series..

5 out of 5 stars Let's Do the Time Warp Again.......2004-09-23

I was going through some old books the other day when I happened upon my "Time Warp Trio" collection. What began as thumbing through "Knights of the Kitchen Table" ended with my reading all four of the stories right then and there. They were terriffic when I was little and they are terriffic now.

4 out of 5 stars Great for boys!.......2004-03-26

It's hard to find books for boys that really turn them on to reading but these did the trick. My son insisted that I read them too so we could talk about the plots. Entertaining and well written, perfect for a second or third grader.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Time Warp Trio THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE GOOFY .......2005-06-08

Do you like funny things? Because if you do this is the book for you. It's about three boys named Fred, Sam, and Cookie who use magic to go back in time to 1816, the western time period of time.
Jon Scieszka writes it. He writes the series called The Time Warp Trio. I really like this book.
If you want to find out what happens to Sam, Fred, and Cookie go to your local library.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-01-09

I think the funniest part was when Joe was saying "hello, waisachu, hello waisachu".

5 out of 5 stars The Good The Bad And The Goofy.......2002-11-27

Joe, Fred, and Sam are watching a western show, when suddenly they get sucked back into the book. The boys find themselves in a desert.Fred starts to hear something. It's a stampede. They are about to get hit by the stampede! Will anyone come to their rescue?
Some of the funny parts are when they almost get run over by the cows and at the end when you see the hole in Fred's hat.In one of the pictures the cow has 5 utters so tht was funny.I think you should read this book because it's just as funny as the first two Time Warp Trio books.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Suspensful.......2002-03-13

"The Good The Bad And The Goofy" by Jon Scieszka is great for a short read (It is only fifty pages.) The fights between Fred (really athletic) and Sam (really smart) are hilarious. The book starts out in Joe's attic when Fred, Joe, and Sam wish to go back in time to see the cowboys and indians using Joe's magic book. The way the book works is they say a rhyme and end it with where they want to go. I won't tell you what happens when they get there because I don't want to spoil this great story! If you don't think that you'll like this book than don't pick it up because the book is so great that you won't be able to put it down. In short, if you like magic, comedy, and suspense then this is the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Out of this World, and Back in Time!.......2001-01-24

The Time Warp Trio is a crazy trio of a spotlight man, a brainiac, and a human pig. "Mr. Spotlight" opens The Book. He says the goofiest rhyme you can think of to send his crew back in time to the cowboys. What do you know? It works! All of a sudden, this Time Warp Trio find themselves in a "twister" of adventure. Illustrations help you imagine the story clearly. If it gets boring for a page or two, don't panic; it will jump right back into adventure. Beware, it's dynamite laughs.

Book Description

So I was sitting with Ned in a lecture, and then bam, Ned's in a three-piece suit, and I'm in a city hall meeting on how to get through the beginning of the Great Depression.

As in the Depression, in the 1930s.

What's more, there's a thief to track down. Someone's robbing local banks of what little money they have. Everyone's panicked about their money, so the thief could be just about anyone. But after spending just a little time in this odd place, I have a hunch there's more to it...

Bad Times, Big Crimes

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Premise but needed more work.......2007-02-28

Not as good as some of the other Carolyn Keene books, but a nice read. Gives some great background on the Depression. Too much emphasis on Nancy's lack of remembering where (or should I say when) she is though and not enough on the mystery at hand until shortly before the end.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2006-04-14

This book i thought was not going to be that good, but was i wrong. Nancy falls asleep during a lecture. When she wakes up she is suddenly in the Great Deppresion. I think that spending the money is totally worth it. I won't spoil the fun but, once the mystery is over, there will be a unsolved mystery that you'll never forget!

This compilation of memories from a very dark era is extremely descriptive making every page a pleasure to read. Even the smallest of details are perfectly described in such a way that there is nothing left to imagine.

Sophie Boehm was indeed a victim but not of the Holocaust or concentration camps often discussed in books of this nature. No shooting, violence, or threats from the SS yet very tragic.

An internal perspective - powerful and refreshing. WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Good Tool and Fascinating Read.......2000-06-20

The Hite Report On The Family; Growing Up Under Patriarchy is a fascinating and well-researched look at women under a patriarchal system. This book was fifteen years in the making and 3000 women from around the world contributed to the findings in this book.

The report examines the inherent eroticism of children and how family members' parents and siblings relate and contribute to this. It also examines how the traditional model of the nuclear family has contributed to the disenfranchisement of each member of the family, not just women, but men as well.

This is a fantastically interesting book mainly I think because Shere Hite did not just pose questions and responses to those question on her questionnaire but used an essay format. This means that the readers don't just get the doctors idea of what acceptable responses are but real responses to her questions.

            Book Description

Featuring a new foreword by the author, this is the classic feminist analysis of sex that galvanized a cultural revolution. Originally published in 1976, The Hite Report revealed the most intimate sexual feelings of 3,000 women: what they like and don't like; how orgasm really feels, with and without intercourse; how it feels to not have an orgasm during sex; the importance of clitoral stimulation and masturbation; and the greatest pleasures and frustrations of their sexual lives. The most shocking revelation was that orgasm is simply and easily achieved with the right stimulation, and that sex is a cultural institution - not just a biological one. Hite explains in her introduction that while society has in theory made great strides with regard to female sexuality since the book's first edition, the dissatisfactions with their sex lives some women voice today are reminiscent of the issues raised in the 1970s..

            1 out of 5 stars BAD SCIENCE.......2007-08-26

You can put fresh lipstick on a pig but the results are still ugly. The horrible data collection for this book was scientifically discredited in 1976.

The author sent out 100,000 questionnaires, received 3019 and used 1844. From this small, self-selected response she drew her conclusions. First, ask yourself, "If this was cancer research, would I bet my life on a 1.844% sample?"

The questionnaire had 58 essay questions requiring "as much detail as possible." Second, you must ask yourself who took the time to answer. Was it the self-validated career women busy with interesting hobbies and a successful, loving relationship or was it the lonely, bitter, unsatisfied woman sitting at her kitchen table at Three in the morning? Do you have the time and inclination to write a long detailed essay on your sexuality? If you do, this book is about you. If not, I recommend "Heterosexuality" by Masters and Johnson or "The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior." Both offer a more scientific approach to research and more reliable conclusions.

            3 out of 5 stars Not a Kinsey Report.......2007-08-19

When I read both this report and the one on male sexual behavior, I was hoping to see something akin and updating to the Kinsey Report. Kinsey's report on sexual behavior in both sexes furnished quite a bit of data more valuable than Hite's because he asked basically the same questions in his interviews with both sexes. Shere Hite didn't do that. This gives the reader only a few areas to compare the sexual behavior of males and females.
Hite stays completely away from the important subject of childhood sexual experiences, obviously, by complete absence of coverage, treating it as a taboo, off-limits subject, whereas Kinsey did deal with it in both sexes. One does not become a sexual being suddenly after childhood, but during childhood as well. Not all childhood sexual experiences are from sexual abuse, contrary to what using "childhood sexual experiences" as a search word on the Internet would lead one to believe, but are mostly from experimentation, either on self or with others or both. Although sex doesn't figure nearly as much in a prepubescent child's life as it does later and children instinctively sense that certain things about it are not appropriate for them, nevertheless the subject does excite their curiosity and they do have strong feelings about it. Kinsey knew this and was bold enough to investigate it as best he could by interviewing adults about this subject, relying on their recollections, since it was obviously off-limits to interview children and probably should be.
Hite also betrays a distinct feminist slant by highlighting abortion, the darling of the feminist movement. The best you can say for the relevance of abortion is that it is a byproduct of female sexuality. But, for that matter, so are pregnancy and childbirth, both of which Hite didn't touch. Nor did she cover menstruation, which is quite relevant, usually negatively, to a female's sexual experience.
To allow one's prejudices to shape research is very bad science, and I'm afraid Shere Hite is quite guilty of that and damaged the usefulness of what should have been a scientific report.

5 out of 5 stars glad to have read this as an adolescent boy.......2005-04-25

"The Hite Report" (on female sexuality) is a seminal and indispensible text. It is by turn shocking, inspiring, disturbing, titillating, and sometimes boring, but always informative. What you get is practically PURE information, but of a sort rarely found elsewhere -- if sex weren't sex, the report would be a bone-dry academic snoozefest. Along with a bit of methodology and comment, the book's content is simply collected testimonies of American womens' subjective experiences of their sexuality. The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions. As a study it assumes no strong thesis (unlike some of Hite's later work), therefore as a critic one can't say much more about it. That said, although the good people at Amazon insist we reviewers focus on the "product," I have something to add about my experience of the "product" that may be of more interest.

Back in the late 70's, my mother, in uncharacteristic daring and playfulness, shelved an early edition of the "The Hite Report" next to her cookbooks on the kitchen bookshelf and left it there. Years later, around the age of 13, her son (me) noticed this book was not like the other ones. Needless to say, after reading just a bit standing there in the kitchen, the son absconded with it to his room and read the whole thing. And reread. Many times. It was years before it got replaced next to "Larouse Gastronomique. " To this day, it lives there, and I've never asked Mom if she ever noticed its leave of absence.

My primary purpose at the time was titillation, but underneath my arousal was a sense of wonder and curiousity. Feminine sexuality was demystified for me even as my awe grew. Looking back, I see how I formed the basis of a deeply respectful understanding of the power of ALL sexuality. I accepted how taboos, shame, etc. might form around sex, but that sex in and of itself was not just neutral, but beautiful and precious. I authentically experienced what many (I believe) can only offer as a platitude or abstraction.

I could go on about what good I think "The Hite Report" did for me, but more important to me now is that it helped me become both a good lover and a good friend. As a young adult, having been taught to think I was "just a guy," I was repeatedly surprised to find myself being more insightful, accepting and compassionate about the twists and turns of many of my female companion's sexuality than they, their girlfriends, their mothers, or even their therapists could be. I don't say this to brag, but as a heartfelt testimonial to the educational and maturational value of having read this book during the right formative years. I was fortunate. In fact, I paused to write this review while shopping for a copy for a friend whom I wish could have read it 15 years ago.

Everybody, regardless of gender or background, should be availed of "The Hite Report" at the apporpriate age by the approriate person (and perhaps the report on male sexuality too). The only drawback to this report is its age; while it is incorrect to call it outdated, mores and customs do change, and a study like this should be repeated at least once a generation.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a mandatory read for ALL hetrosexual men! ;-).......2005-04-06

I read this book when it first came out in 1976. I was 13 at the time, and boy oh boy did it make a big impression on me. I am so glad I had this book at a young age, so that, growing up, I knew from the get go that I was a normal, healthy girl. This is an amazingly informative book. I have to say that I disagree with the above reviewer in that I do not believe the book and its graphic content were there for simply "shock value", but were actual feelings, of actual women, from all over the United States. The fact that it was so graphic is perhaps an eye opener, but all the contents are presented in a fashion that makes it obvious that this is a serious work and not some sort of sleaze. All heterosexual males should read this book, because there is not a better reference of information regarding womens sexuality to be found. Highly recommended.

            3 out of 5 stars A couragous author!.......2000-06-09

I admire Shere Hite's courage to cover such a controversial topic, but that doesn't make it a good book. The focus was more on making people shocked at such a controversial topic than on covering such a controversial topic. Even so, it brought up many taboo topics that should've been out in the open years ago. Good book, not well balanced. Shere Hite is a good writer. Someone who can rackle this sort of sexual topic has to be!

            5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2006-10-05

Although I agree with some of the previous viewers that some (many?) of the statistics are probably inaccurate and outdated, the collection of personal testimonies of so many men make this work invaluable and incredibly engrossing. Even though we are constantly bombarded with "sex info," there's so much myth and false information out there that I think a lot of us have a really skewed view of what other people "really" are doing in the bedroom.

The biggest thing I took away from the book is that many men generally feel physically neglected and unloved by their female partners. Men's biggest complaints seem to revolve around women's lack of interest in sex, and specifically in them sexually. Many men feel like even though they have to take all the initiative in these matters and "do all the work," their female partners show very little genuine interest in them sexually (often just providing sex as a favor to them) or flat out reject them.

This book also made me consider some of the downsides of male sexuality such as the pressures to have sex (a man is supposed to be ready and willing at all times and is supposed to prove his manliness through his conquests), performance anxiety (about getting and keeping an erection, controlling their orgasms and being able to satisfy the women they are with) and penis size. While men probably think a lot of these things are more important than women do, I suppose the cultural pressures can make these anxieties very real.

What I envy about male sexuality is the ease and early age of their orgasms. None of the men in the book had to read a book in order to learn how to have an orgasm. Also, there is no political debate surrounding men's sexual needs. The pivotal role that their orgasms play in reproduction and the fact that they can reach orgasm so easily through "legitimate sex" (intercourse) validate their sexual response as "natural." Female sexual satisfaction and orgasm is a much more grey area: since our orgasms are not essential to reproduction, do we really need them? Is it "unfeminine" and "unnatural" for us to expect to engage in sexual practices that play no role in reproduction in order to reach orgasm? As a woman I've always felt like I've had to fight against social pressures that tell me my desire for sexual fulfillment is not normal or justified. This does not seem to be the case for men. Society supports and encourages male sexuality.

For me, some of the more disturbing trends the book reveals are the difficulties men have with seeing women as equals, many men's aversion to female genitalia (sight, smell, taste), men's ignorance about female orgasm and their expectation that we "should" come through intercourse alone (even though for many of us its physically impossible!), the high rate of extramarital affairs (according to this book 70% of men seek sex outside of their marriages - this figure is definitely higher than more recent studies) and the strength of some men's feelings of anger towards women being so strong that they desire (and/or actually carry out ) acts of violence, domination and/or rape.

This book breaks down the unrealistic standards that many of us compare our own sex lives to. In other words, sex is not wonderfully great all the time for most people. A lot of us, including men, have experienced hurt and disappointment in our sexual relationships. A lot of us find our sexual relationships wanting at times in our lives. And, a lot of us have difficulty verbalizing to our partners what we want and need in this area.

Overall, I found this work very enlightening and I appreciated hearing men speak honestly about their feelings in these matters. Highly recommended.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-20

It does not matter if this book is statistically flawed or not. The merit in this book is the candid and revealing responses men made regarding everything that they think and feel about sex, sexual acts, women, women's bodies, their own bodies, their sexuality, etc. Reading it at a young age made me a more understanding, communicative, patient and confident lover. As much as sexuality pervades our culture, there is not a lot of honesty around sex. This book is very honest. I cannot vouch for levels of statistical significance, but I can tell you this was a very important book in my understanding of the male and sexual universe, and statistics had nothing to do with that. Moms: buy it for your 16+ daughter.

2 out of 5 stars Read "sex in America" instead.......2004-02-13

The data in this book is deeply flawed. Reading this book will give you an inaccurate picture of what american sexuality is like. The data is responses from a survey in Redbook Magazine. The data is not timeless, nor is it correct. For full details, read "Sex in America", a fully designed and cross checked survey - and look at the differences in the numbers. Make up your own mind.

I already read the Hite report for women and this one was just as good. Anything you need to know about men you will find in this book. I liked both, they are very informative and interesting.

            4 out of 5 stars Timeless data.......2002-04-16

Whether the study was accurate enough or not, a lot of data in this book is still valuable. A great amount of men spoke out to a woman who knows how to interpret and how to write. Certainly during the time she wrote it, people were more loyal to any kind of study than nowadays, so you can't just say this book is only a nice thing to have on your shelves (referring to the review of the anonymous man from Argentina here below). It is not fair to state things are inaccurate and proven without mentioning the full (traceable) resources. In the book you can also see she has had many interviews with a lot of men. I still think Shere Hite has managed to collect valuable, timeless data.
