Book Description
Before John Paul II became Pope he was known as Karol Wojtyla. This is a short, Illustrated story for children as well as adults who would like to get to know the life of Karol Wojtyla. The story starts with Karol Wojtyla as a Child. Playing soccer with his friends was his favorite game. He was a good student with a passion for knowledge that would eventually lead him into priesthood. Karol Wojtyla climbed the hierarchy within the Catholic Church that would ultimately lead to his appointment as the 264th Pope of the Catholic Church. He loved all people, especially children and visited many countries throughout his tenure as Pope.

Wonderful for Children.......2007-02-06
This is a wonderful graphic book version of Pope John Paul II aimed mostly at children, but still very nice to view for adults. Very straight forward ideas and answers to questions at how remarkable this man really was. It spans his entire life.
book review.......2007-01-15
I wanted to purchase this book for my grandchildren, who were born during the papacy of Pope John Paul II. They're a little young (2-5) for the content, but I hope the book will be a keepsake for them to remember this remarkable Pope and great man all their lives. As they get older I hope they will emulate his character and holiness.
Great book for children.......2006-07-20
This is perhaps the first book about Pope John Paul II published in English that aims at children as its primary audience. Stories depicted in the book are real and easy to comprehend, despite their considerable distance in space and time from here-and-now. Good educational value. A highly recommended reading for Catholic and non-Catholic children alike.
Book Description
Originally entitled Osoba i Czyn and published in Poland in 1969, TheActing Person is the official English translation and has been thoroughly edited and revised with the collaboration of the author. The book stresses that Man must ceaselessly unravel his mysteries and strive for a new and more mature expression of his nature. The author sees this expression as an emphasis on the significance of the individual living in community and on the person in the process of performing an action. The author states in his preface that he has tried to face the major issues concerning life, nature, and the existence of Man directly as they present themselves to Man in his struggles to survive while maintaining the dignity of a human being, but who is torn apart between his all too limited condition and his highest aspirations to set himself free. The author hopes that his book "contributes to this disentangling of the conflicting issues facing Man, which are crucial for Man’s own clarification of his existence and direction of his conduct". The author’s analysis of the human being is a dynamic counter to the materialistic and positivistic tendencies in various schools of modern philosophy. Ever since Descartes, the knowledge of Man and his world has been identified through cognition. This book is a reversal of the post-Cartesian attitude toward Man in that it characterises him as the person in action. Audience: The Acting Person will be of great interest to philosophers, anthropologists, and scholars specializing in phenomenology. It will also be of deep concern to theologians, priests, seminarians, and members of religious orders who wish to gain an insight into Pope John Paul II’s philosophy of life.

Early work of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II).......2006-03-10
Anyone who desires a deeper understanding of the thought of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) should spend time reading his early work. I highly recommend for anyone who is studying Theology of the Body.
The one who seeks the truth seeks God!.......2006-02-24
This text is well presented by the publisher and its contents do inform the reader on the classical thought patterns and their underlying philosophical presuppositions that made Pope John-Paul II the man of our times who was and is an intellectual and spiritual force to be recond with.
" A definitive form from my text" - Wojtyla.......2005-04-29
Wojtyla's original version of the Acting Person is now known as his Opus Magnus of his philosophical work. I will skip writing regarding what this book is about since reviewers below did a good job however I would like to mention some interesting facts such as that Wojtyla wrote his original work during the Second Vatican Council and, specifically, as he mentioned in his Gift & Mystery book sequel, wrote in a chapel where His Most Blessed Sacrament was.
Furthermore, regarding the differences from the Anglo translation hitherto being reviewed, there is a preface from Wojtyla himself-which he felt in obligation to do- that mentions that the Anglo book is a bit different:
The Acting Person " in comparison with the first and only Polish edition...contains a certain number of changes however the basic conception has remained unaltered" ( Wojtyla's preface to the Anglo work).
The "certain number of changes" as Wojtyla describes are in around 900 places in the Anglo version as Kupczak once noted.
Since Wojtyla wrote the aforementioned preface there is now a more definitive Polish edition; the 1994 3rd Edition from the University of Lublin. You can obtain the latter from a Polish bookstore website which is how I got a copy however I noticed that Amazon might be able to get you a copy as well -use the search option.
Regarding the Spanish version as some reviewers mentioned below, it is not any different from the Anglo version- and hence not imperative unless you can't read English- because it is an exact translation from the latter. The title of the Spanish version is called Persona y Acción. You might still get a copy from the source - B.A.C ( Bliblioteca de Autores Cristianos). That's how I got mine and through their website I obtained a brand new-out-of print-hardcopy of Persona y Accion for $46 bucks including S&H.
Overall, the Anglo version is not a bad book to read and as Wojtyla himself wrote regarding it: the Anglo version " has given a definitive form from my text" ( Wojtyla/JPII). If you still concerned about the Anglo version because of its 900 or so changes than learn Polish and buy Osaba i czyn.
A Scholarly Work for the Ages.......2003-11-29
This book is perhaps the most significant philosophical work since Cajetan's commentary on the Summa. Working from consciousness as a bridge between (1) the internal person and (2) the person's externally-manifested actions, Wojtyla insightfully demolishes the idealism-empiricism split which led Descartes and countless others into skepticism. The book is also historically significant for two other reasons. First, JPII's condemnation (see Veritatis Splendor) of an entire system of moral theology is based on the thought of this book. Second, the book establishes a philosophical basis for the claims about human dignity made at Vatican II, which Wojtyla was attending when he wrote the book. Finally, since his method is phenomenological, his introspection is pretty much self-evident, and thereby philosophically unassailable.
I have only read the first half of it in the (apparently controversial) English edition, but even that much was unusually insightful. Admittedly, I had to read certain sections about six times to understand his terminology, and to make sure that I wasn't being fooled by a vague translation, but once you see what he is actually saying, the scope and moment of the work becomes apparent.
Better Edition of the Acting Person.......2001-12-03
The Vatican has attempted to halt continued dissemination of the only English edition of The Acting Person with good reason. Apparently, it is not a faithful translation of Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II's Polish original. The translator, who is herself a phenomenologist but thinks differently from the author has changed crucial passages of his work. The second Polish edition which has been translated into French and Spanish is apparently accurate, for those who can read those languages. I myself am looking for one of these, preferably Spanish, but have not been able to find one. Two good overviews of Karol Wojtyla's philosophical anthropology can be found in Kenneth Schmitz's At the Center of the Human Drama and Jaroslaw Kupczak's Destined for Liberty.

For University Trained Philosophers.......2005-09-30
This is an excellent scholarly treatment of Pope John-Paul II's
thinking and worldview. The only drawback is the book is written at a "16" reading level, meaning you must have graduated from college with a major in philosophy. Therefore, I recommend the author's other book on the same subject written for non-college graduates. I gave it two stars because the author and publisher did not make this clear on the book jacket - - in order to sell books, of course - - and they only printed the other edition after having received a lot of flack from critics and book stores, which had too many returned because buyers could not understand the material. In my opinion, this should have been a college textbook and not released to the general public; however,as is often the case, greed rules the book market.
A guide to an insight of a great philosopher's mind.......2003-12-16
This book will guide you through Wojtyla's thought. Be aware that this is not a substitute to Wojtyla's own writings. However, this book gives you a philosophical perspective into his writings thus, if you don't have the basic philosophical knowledge, it will be hard to read. For example, it takes me a couple of times to read the same chapter before it clicks. If you are strong in your philosophical background you will have no problem reading Buttiglione's book. Regardless, if you are not familiar with thinkers such as Wittgenstein or Sartre, please still get this book. You'll get to know-the latter mentioned philosophers thinking and actually appreciate even more why Wojtyla is a great contemporary philosopher. I highly recommend this book if you want to know more about one of philosophy's greatest contributions since Descartes' cogito ergo sum.
Good but a hard read........2001-12-19
The book is hard to understand not only in philosophical thought but also some polish history would help.
As a casual reader I found the book to be more of a task then I wanted.
A challenge is good if you have the patience for the subject mater. I rated the book high because it was well written and informative but a little over my head. I simply didn't have the back round knowledge I needed to get full understanding.
There are other books on Pope John Paul 2 that would be more beneficial for the causal reader.
A major philosopher.......2001-12-13
The reader seeking to understand the thinking of Pope John Paul II will find no better introduction than this remarkable book. Buttiglione is a major philosopher in his own right--as if evident from his careful discussions of Adorno, Sartre, Marx, and other thinkers he brings into dialogue with Wojtyla. Highly recommended.
great intro to the Wojtyla's thought.......1998-11-25
Buttiglione, like Wojtyla, is not an easy read. His book, however, is very valuable in that through it one can start the process of understanding the pope's previous thought. Buttiglione does not deal with Wojtyla as Pope John Paul II; as he explains this requires an interpretation in the light of the church's whole history. Along with a high recommendation of this text, a warning is in order: it does require philosophical training to understand. However, one must begin somewhere and Buttiglione is a worthy starting place.

Richly Meditative.......2005-11-02
It is a wonder that this little book is not more widely known, and that the late pope's poetry remains largely unappreciated. Karol Wojtyla was in many ways primarily a creative spirit, and all of these poems were published under a pseudonymn prior to his papacy. They arose out of meditations during his ministry as a bishop, and seemed to have been used as a tool therein.
Drawn to drama when young, Wojtyla's poems are experiential and vivid, expressive of his lifelong philosophy that life is most significantly revealed in personal action and social interaction. Thus we have the impressions of a priest working among his people during holy week or, in one remarkable sequence, a projection back into the personna of Simon of Cyrene, assaulted by crowds as he aids Christ on the way of the cross, propelled by little more than a brute human sense of justice. Wojtytla also dabbled in philosophy all of his life, and this is reflected in a certain tentative, searching aspect to most of the poems. They are hardly didactic or reducible to obvious sermons or lessons; indeed they are quite modern in their open-endedness and their often questioning quality. Nor are they to any extent ponderously self important; they rather invite one in quietly, to share a richly personal, even quirky spirit that is both surprisingly restless and consistently meditative.
Translated from his native tongue, Polish............2005-04-09
It is a rare translator who can use the richness of the English language to reflect the mind of another language, another culture. Is it simplistic? Perhaps, but it captures Karol's mind without losing his thoughts in translation. The real poetry is not in the words, but the images.
His native population decimated by the Nazis and later repressed by Communism, his message was always consistent. "Be not afraid".
Written while he was a Cardinal in Poland, these words reflect God's purpose for Karol Josef Wojtyla. We know them as bringing together the religions of Abraham and the downfall of the Soviet Union. Can you imagine there is so much more? Read this book, and find YOUR purpose.
Read the images. Never mind the translation. They are just words.
Inspiration.......2004-01-22
I have always found it interesting to read poetry in translation. Thinking of Quine: Translation is a lie. Worse with poetry, the music of the piece does not carry over into another symbol system since the symbol systems each have their own music. Still since those of us interested in understanding Pope John Paul II better, even now that the Holy Father has gone on to his next calling, this is a good place to look. I think, and I may be wrong, that the poetry must be better in Polish. Mozhet byt' ya budu chitat' ehto kogda nybud' i uznat esli ehto tak.
But it was interesting nonetheless. Notice that there are more question marks in this poetry than any other you may have seen?
