Book Description

The ultimate Leica guide--from Leica's top technical expert--now completely revised and updated.

Leicas inspire more passion than any other camera, and the Leica M is the company's crowning achievement. That's why second-hand copies of the first edition of this popular cult camera book cost a fortune. Long-awaited, the new version is thoroughly updated by the man who wrote the original: Leica's former top technical expert, Gunter Osterloh. This reader-friendly course contains a goldmine of technical information, as well as a treasure trove of insider knowledge about the equipment. Leica's famed lenses alone receive almost 100 pages of coverage, and there are schematic diagrams, a discussion of optical principles, plenty of advice on how to shoot memorable pictures, and much more. Of course, every Leica M model from the M1 through today's Leica M7 camera is included, with explanations of metering, focusing, film advance, and flash systems, plus technical guidance on everything from existing-light photography to working in extreme climates. Professional and serious amateur photographers will snap up this unmatched guide, as will retailers, bookstores, collectors, and anyone else interested in fine cameras.

As a result of his long-time association with the company, Gunter Osterloh has witnessed every milestone in the development of Leica cameras. He served as Leica's leading technical expert for decades, and now is the technical editor of Leica Photography International and Leica World magazines, as well as an instructor at the Leica Academy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool as Well as Leica Primer.......2007-06-08

I agree with the reviewers comments that accompany this book. Mr. Osterloh is well regarded in the Leica community and shows his depth and breath of knowledge in this well written and generously illustrated book. Pictures selected very clearly illustrate his points, and lead to a more thorough understanding and true learning.

The book also does a fine job of describing why rangefinder cameras have an almost cultlike following - the system is truly unique and when compared to SLR cameras the book makes clear the limits and strengths of each format.

Highly recommended for all photographers - Leica owners or not.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-06-08

I had to wait for some time before this book came. It was backordered and Amazon asked me if I still wanted it after a long period of time. I am extremely happy with the book.

I have some formal training in photography and still this book taught me a great deal. I still open it up after having it for a while. The format of the book makes sense, cameras, lenses, and so on, though the author only reviews the current model lenses and they're pretty much praise across the board. I bought a Leica M6 after I had this book for a month or so and have come to realize that most of what he writes is true. Leica systems are fantastic.

Outside of the standard equipment, body, lens, filters & gadgets, Osterloh also dedicated chapters to photography techiniques, use of light and so on. There are photo examples of differences which I found very helpful. One comment though, being from the USA, is that the film designations are different than what can be found in Germany. I switched from digital to film for this camera and while trying to compare different forms of film I wasn't able to use much of what was in this book. Nonetheless, it's definitely worth the money. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Leica owner must have...........2007-05-21

Everyone love Leica Camera, expecially the M series,I had bought a lot of books which tell the details for Leica M camera, but this book is different , it provide a lot more informations , include production details , revise version and also , history of Leica M camera.

This is the first book really tell me the main different in every M series Leica , include the lens , and a lot of M related accessories.

So , if you like to try Leica M camera , this is the book for you , with simple english and well planed picture. You will understand M more after reading this books.

4 out of 5 stars Informative book on Leica M, but certainly also very interesting to non Leica owners........2005-08-07

I do not own, nor have I owned any Leica M camera. Nor am I planning to buy one. So probably I am not in the 'target group' for this book. I bought this book out of interest in photography in general, and in particular to learn more about technical aspects of (rangefinder) photography. For this purpose, it is a good book.

The book has about 350 pages, roughly divided as follows:
- 50 pages on photography techniques in general, not related to Leica.
- 200 pages on Leica M camera bodies
- 100 pages on Leica M lenses

Although the majority of the book is clearly dedicated to Leica equipment, also these Leica specific chapters are interesting for non-Leica owners, since the entire book is filled with discussions on how one can best photograph certain situations, what the effect is of chosing a certain lens/aperture/shutter speed etc. Also, throughout the entire book many photographs (both color and B/W) are shown that illustrate the text and these photographs not only show what the author means, they are also proof of the quality of Leica equipment: the photo's are in general of very high quality, both technically, but also artistically (i.e. with carefully chosen cropping, lighting, perspective, etc.). It makes you very appreciative of the quality of so-called 'old' equipment!

For me, the added value of the book is that it helps you building up a thorough understanding of photographic techniques, and to understand the technical aspects in depth. This is not a book for the casual snap shot photographer, who does not want to know how things work. It is for the seriously interested amature and for people with an interest in science/engineering of optical equipment. And of course for the real 'Leica fetishist'.

Other things I can mention about this book:
- the table of contents spans 6 pages and is not so clear and concise; the index however is ok.
- there is also quite some text dedicated to history of the very old Leica bodies; I find this personally not so interesting.
- not a single word is mentioned about digital.
- the physical quality of the book (binding, paper quality, layout) is very good.

Bottom line:
The book is clearly written by a knowledgeable author, and everything is well presented so reading the book is a joy. I think I will read parts of this book over and over again. Many of the techniques described are timeless: in 20 years from now they will still apply, no matter how 'automatic' and 'digital' cameras will become. Although I have read quite some books on the topic, and have a technical background myself, I learned many new things by reading this book. It is worth its price. I can recommend it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Missd the first Osterloh book? Get this edition!.......2005-05-21

Four and a half stars... sorry but there is no way to click on the half star.

Given the fairly narrow scope of the Leica camera system when compared to say Nikon or Canon, I am guessing that if you are reading this, you know what you are looking for in an instructional book on the M series camera and lenses. You might also know about the previous Osterloh book on this very topic, which long out of print has developed a cult status among Leica users on the web. Those of us that have the first book love it, but it is known to have a deadly flaw in the binding, which allows the pages detach readily. My copy has very few pages that are still connected to the cover making reading (as a book) very hard to do. Reading it now means a large spread of loose pages covering the kitchen table.

When this new edition was announced, I pre-ordered it hoping that it was at least half as good as the first book. I need not have worried. It is a fine replication (often word-for-word) for those that never were able to find the first book, as well as a good replacement for those of us that wish to have more robust binding on what would surely be a very frequently referenced book.

In short, this is THE book for the Leica M shooter, and a book that is second to none where technique is concerned. Osterloh is not a company "yes man"; but a person that has actually used the Leica M, knowing it strengths as well as its weaknesses. Unlike some books, this one tells you if a certain lens requires stopping down to get good, or when it might be better go to an SLR. One technique taught (and carried over from the first book to this one) for shooting with a 35mm lens without viewing, and still being able to visualize what will be caught on film, was worth the price of my first book since it has rewarded me with hundreds of fine Leica-style candids since I read it in the 1980s. This is a book for Leica users, not collectors. This book will make you more effective as a photographer with the M camera.

There is one weakness that cost my review that half of a star. I would say that Osterloh should have reprinted the reviews and information from the first book on the lenses that have been superseded since that edition. He had a comprehensive list of the then current lenses in his first book, and the same for the second book. Those lenses that have been replaced with more modern designs (21mm Elmarit, 28mm Elmarit, 35mm Summicron, 90mm Tele-Elmarit, 135mm Tele-Elmarit) have been dropped from the lens chapter in the new book. Since the bodies section goes back to the 1950s M3, keeping some 1980s lenses in the book would have been more inclusive. It would have been easy to do since that text already existed in the first book. Leica users are famous for using old gear, so the addition of these older lenses in the new edition would have made this fine book even more complete.

The bottom line, after spending thousands of Dollars on the hardware of a Leica M system, this book at under 30 Dollars (discounted) will make that gear investment even more productive for those that really want to be photographers rather than snobbish "camera-as-jewelry" wearing posers.

Book Description

The Leica M system has been with us since 1954. It rapidly became, and has remained the favorite instrument of photographers, especially photojournalists, who, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, seek to ""catch life in the act"", to record ""the decisive moment"". In this Leica M Compendium Jonathan Eastland describes the whole Leica M system from his experience as a professional photographer. He explains how to use, enjoy and get the best out of the cameras and lenses, regardless of age. The latest lenses can be used on the earliest cameras, and vice-versa, and the Visoflex, although no longer made, is now much easier to use with the M6 and its TTL metering. Advice on planning and shooting a story with the Leica and extensive tables of technical data complete this ideal companion for the practical Leica M photographer, as well as for the Leica collector and enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Leica M Handbook by Jonathon Eastland.......2007-07-25

If you are a Leica M enthusiast, this book is for you. Well written, well illustrated, and a wealth of information on cameras, lenses, and accessories up through and including the M6 classic. Profusely illustrated with mainly B&W photos, and a lot of good practical advice on how to make best use of the equipment. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The best independent user review of classic Leica M system.......2007-02-09

This handbook by Jonathon Eastland is probably the best independent user review of the more than half century old reknown Leica M rangefinder series of 35mm manual focus film cameras.

I am glad to have read this book before I purchase my first used Leica M series camera, it had helped me made my informed choice for purchase ownership and use.

This book featured the Leica M series, the Leica M1 to M6, Compact Leica CL from the first introduction of the Leica M3 (introduced in 1954), M2 and M1 to its incarnation in the form of Leica M6 with ample coverage and discussion on M-lenses accessories and special commemorative (collector's) models.

From this book, I have learnt that the Leica M series of camera has remained unchanged in layout and design without major substantial product modification and a new Leica M still carries a hefty price tag since 1954. The latest Leica, the now out-of-production M6 as featured in the book with the basic machine (yes it is a photo making machine) as the M3 introduced in 1954 and unlike the digital stuff today, mechanical Leica Ms (other than the M7 & M8) and the CL can fully function as a camera without batteries. Majority of the interchangeable M-lenses designed and produced since 1954 are top performers in 35mm photography and still could be used with the current production model, the mechanical Leica MP, the latest M-lenses could also be fitted on the same bayonet mount on older Ms. In fact except for the CL and M5, all Leica Ms has the same exterior.

The author has a little of everything for everybody from the student photographer, professional photographer, weekend shooter, camera collector-investor-speculator to a general reader who had randomly pick this up from a bookshelf. This book also has generous examples of nice photos made by the author.

Readers should be forewarned that the subject of photography is NOT the main discussion in this book but discussion is centred on the tool, the Leica M camera and how it would add value to your kind of photography.

If you intend to buy and read this book for a understanding of the Leica system you may like to know that despite its detail coverage of the Leica M system, this book is NOT updated with the most recent development because the Leica M rangefinder camera has just recently (in 2002/2003) gone semi electronic/automatic with the introduction of the M7 (a muted WoW for being 30 years behind the Japanese in technology) and had gone into the arena of digital photography with the recent introduction of the Leica M8 camera-the digital M in 2006 (a BIG WOW) while without Autofocus M-lenses.

IMHO a radical update of this book may not be due despite the recent changes with the introduction of the digital M8. As far as analog photography is concerned the Leica M system is near perfection and the technology would reamin very much the same as long there is 35mm film cartridge and a darkroom available.

I am speculating that once this handbook goes out of print it could instant become a collector's item for Leicaphiles and collectors like the many vintage out of production Leica M camera reviewed in the book.

For readers who are doing research on 35mm "analog" film photography and Leica, I would heartedly recommend this handbook together with the Leica R Compendium by the same author as compulsory read. Reading both handbooks would give the interested reader an understanding of the German side of the development of the 35mm film photography.

Not a "Leica M camera for dummies" book but an overall balanced and informative special interest book which deserves 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Very good discussion of M version Leica equipment........2004-09-24

It is written intelligently and to a good depth for a sort of advanced overview book. The author goes in depth as needed without boring with excessive technical details and the author's experience shows with good comments. He covers a bit on how rangefinder cameras are unique. M6 and old Leica M bodies are introduced with moderate detail. Film loading is shown for early and late cameras. He comments on new and old lenses but not on all lenses (1994 copyright with reprint of the same in 2001) so the only Aspherical lens mentioned is 35mm F/1.4. Visoflex is discussed. Overall this is a sort of advanced beginners book written for the Leica's more intellectual market yet it has a personal edge that endears.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory Leica book for anyone.......2003-06-11

As a diehard Leica M user - an M-4 with a wide range of lenses and accessories -, I came across this wonderful book several years ago and puts its purchase aside until recently. Not that I needed this book to "learn" about the superb Leica cameras and lenses or for that matter photography in general, since I have been using Leica equipment for over 25 years, I just wanted to add it to my own selective collection of books on the Leica.

This book should be read and enjoyed as an introduction to the near recent Leica "M" cameras. To be sure, a complete technical, imaginative, and profusly illustrated up-to-date Leica rangfinder (and SLR) book is solely needed. Leica camera are you listening?

On the other hand, readings of various older books on the Leica M cameras provide a wealth of photographic information as does attendance at a Leica photographic seminar, if they are still offering them around the country. Decades ago, I had the privilege of attending two Leica photographic seminars - one in Peoria, IL and the other at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, where I witnessed the quality of Leica photographic equipment when 35mm slides were projected onto an 8 ft X 12 ft screen. Of course, the better way to learn about the superb quality of Leica photographic equipment is to simply learn from one's own practical photographic endeavors.

Despite several reviews to the contrary and the possible absence of Leica photographic seminars, this book does definitely give the reader a glimpse of the quality that awaits the new Leica user.

1 out of 5 stars When, oh when?.......2001-06-22

Its time Leica Camera published a real reference on the technical facts and tricks you can do with the latest equipment, in simple native language to whatever market they are offering it for sale on. I urge everyone to write Leica and ask them to do so. For example, wouldn't it be nice to have a chapter on things you can *do* with the flash unit for the M6 TTL, like exactly how to do fill in, how to move the flash off-camera and still use TTL, not just 'auto' mode, and so on. This information was very hard to find, and you would think that the sheer technical competence with which each of us who buy the fabulous Leica stuff is required to have in order to understand why Leicas are fabulous - and therefore to plunk down the fabulous amounts of cash in order to procure such fabulous equipment, that Leica would take that into consideration and not publish this useless dribble...

3 out of 5 stars Good book but not updated.......2001-01-19

I'm a casual Leica user. I have my share of the equipment and I bought this book partially to learn about Leica history and also to learn about the lenses and bodies that are available out there. This book took care of the history part. Unfortunately it didn't take care of the technical questions. This book is outdated. It gives you a good description on whatever was available 5-10 years ago but nothing about the new releases. I also expected the photos to be little more exciting. It's a good start-up book for the beginner. But even beginner will realize the lack of depth and actual information that are necessary when purchasing Leicas. In my opinion you would probably get more info from the Leica Manufacturing catalog that you can obtain in bigger photo stores (FREE) than from that book. Except for the history part of course.

4 out of 5 stars Great Leica Book for any level.......2000-03-30

Of the many books written on the subject, this is one of the best books written on the Leica M system. Simple to read, a lot of material is covered on the selection, use and pros/cons of the M system. Beautiful photography that showcases the quality of the system is reason alone to buy it. If you have to buy only one Leica M systems book, this is the one!

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the Leica system........1999-09-04

This book is a good book for the beginner just entering the Leica system. Very good description of Leica's history, camera bodies, lenses, and accessories. There is also a section on collecting vintage Leica's. If you purchase this book, I don't think it is necessary to purchase the other books by the same author, e.g. Leica Lenses. Most of the information is repeated. The downside of this book is that the photographs are not very exciting or interesting. I was not impressed overall, although there may be one or two photos that I really liked.
