Book Description
Like one of the movie moguls of old, Michael Eisner is a titan -- feared, powerful, and almost magically successful. After rising through ABC television and Paramount Pictures, he awoke the sleeping giant of Disney and sent it stomping across the entertainment landscape. But since the tragic death of Frank Wells in a helicopter crash in 1994, he has lacked -- for the first time in his career -- a colleague who could temper his personality.
The result, writes Kim Masters, has been a slide into a Nixonian paranoia and isolation. In The Keys to the Kingdom, Masters crafts a gripping account of this larger-than-life story of larger-than-life hubris, combining an insightful analysis of power in Hollywood with a vivid, deeply researched narrative that brings the personalities, the enmities, and the corporate mayhem to life.

digging into disney.......2005-03-26
A very well written account of the movie business--detailing a lot of the major players. Discussion how decisions are made and how grown men act like little boys most of the time. This industry is ruthless and this book gives the reader on all the inside scoop about how that happens. A fascinating read. The pictures stink but thats ok.
Prescient Book.......2004-04-12
Keys to the Kingdom predicted the current situation at Disney with remarkable accuracy. The insights about Michael Eisner turned out to be right on the mark.
pretty terrible.......2004-02-25
Oh Lord, this book is so unbelievably frustrating....more than any book I've ever read. Eisner, his life and his actions are so completely fascinating and Masters somehow manages to take all this great material and make it mind-numbingly boring...what was she thinking? That you could write a "nuanced" portrait of someone by throwing in hot gossip, sound bites, bits of articles from Time and Newsweek, as well as a bunch of stories that don't remotely relate to the main subject but are "dishy"? There was so much I wanted to know as I read this book, so many questions I had and she didn't answer any of them. Masters discusses Eisner's charm vs. his ruthlessness, she brings up provacative examples of his relationship to his family, his friends and his colleagues, and then steamrolls all of them by emphasizing how "aloof" he is and "imperial." Doesn't she know that when sketching a complicated portrait of someone, you can't just throw a bunch of facts around but you have to maintain interest by putting them TOGETHER to form a PERSPECTIVE, a CONTEXT. Much more time should have been spent on Eisner's days at Disney (rather than the completely gratuitous tales of his time at Paramount, and Star Trek, and Nimoy, and Gene Roddenberry, and Don Simpson, and Barry Diller, and...well you get the picture). I liked the parts about his childhood and his relationship to his parents, they should have been given much more space...but the biggest flaw of this book is the lack of info on the Eisner-Katzenberg relationship. Sure, Masters give plenty of space to financial issues about Katzenberg's bonus, but aside from Wall Street enthusiasts, who the hell cares? She COMPLETELY glosses over the roots of the Eisner-Katzenberg bond, and we never get an idea of WHY IN THE WORLD DID THESE TWO PEOPLE REMAIN TOGETHER FOR 19 YEARS IF THEY WERE SUCH ENEMIES? What held them together? How exactly did they meet? She talks about how Katzenberg was won over, like others, by Eisner's self-deprecating charm and his (Eisner's) confidence in him, about Katzenberg's not-so-great childhood and his problems with his own parents (very vague descriptions there as well) and how Katzenberg constantly "sought Eisner's approval". Why? What did Eisner offer him that no one else did? Why did Katzenberg follow Eisner from Paramount to Disney? She spends a whole lot of time talking (in a dry, Variety-kind-of-way) about the break-up, but the real question she (and other writers) have often missed is NOT why this relationship crashed and burned but why it was born in the first place. Why did Eisner need Katzenberg? Why did Katzenberg become so enamoured with animation, with his role at Disney, with a potential role as Eisner's number 2? These people are not carbon cut-outs, they are people. They are fascinating, complex characters and Masters gives them with about as much focus as subjects of an obituary. She seems more interested in how much money Captain EO lost, how much money Eisner allegedly cheated certain people out of, how much money Eisner paid Michael Ovitz, how much money Katzenberg wanted, how pissed Leonard Nimoy was at Paramount, what a disaster Star Trek: The Motion Picture was to produce. I don't know about you, but I didn't pick that book up to learn about this stuff. It's SO DIFFICULT to really learn about these people (Eisner and Katzenberg) despite their famous "relationship" or "feud" extremely little is really written about their interactions together as people...you have to research a ton of articles to even find out anything...this is such an interesting subject but whatever Master's knows that the rest of us don't, she isn't sharing. Her book (like many articles) unfortunately is pervaded with the "Everyone knows this" kind of tone that drives me nuts...well, I'm not a Hollywood producer, or director, or actor. I've never met either of these people, but that's why I'm interested! People buy books on Spielberg because they're interested, why the hypocricy? Masters book is slanted, glib, gossipy, disorganized, unfocused, and worst of all, insulting to the reader.
Not a full view of the man -- which proves the point!.......2002-10-11
Some may say that Masters' book is biased against Eisner, but she does nothing except reiterate the feelings about him that have been voiced by many others in other forums. Maybe you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but the duplicity, wishy-washiness, undercutting, second-guessing, micro-management and all around malevolence that is evidenced shows that's pretty much impossible. What we can't figure out is just why he is the way he is? Why does he casually cast aside decades-long friendships? Why doesn't he cultivate relationships with valuable talent instead of alienating them? What is most important to him that would cause him to make some the decisions he does? Eisner seems to be capable of cutting off his nose to spite his face--he fails to do things that would be beneficial to the company's bottom line which is what he claims to be most interested in. It doesn't add up. Still, it is fun reading about the Paramount years, the Katzenberg trial, etc. At this point in time (summer of 2002) when many believe Eisner is in danger of losing his job, this book gives us as much insight as possible as to the inner workings of Eisner's brain.
instead of burning
Masters Paints a Grim Picture of Disney's Inner Sanctum.......2001-09-24
After reading Hit and Run and an excerpt from the this book in Vanity Fair, I couldn't wait to read "Keys to the Kingdom." I was not disappointed. Masters does a fine job of telling Eisner's (and the stories of those around him--Katzenberg, Diller, etc)story. Something about Eisner has always bit a bit unreal--even smarmy at times--and Masters holds nothing back. It isn't always balanced, but overall is fair. The details and stories are terrific--until the last 1/5th of the book. I was engrossed until the story turned the Katzenberg trial--where Masters drowned us in the details. I love details, but at times one needed a road map to keep. Masters is to be commended for a journalistic/insiders account of that dark time for Disney, but wow...I just had a time staying focused. However, on the whole the book is well worth the paper back price. You'll learn how Disney has never really gotten over the death of Frank Wells and why all those executives keep leaving. It is indeed a grim place; Eisner's inner sanctum. It is also another fascinating book.
Book Description
This was the first translation of these annals into English. It was published in 1846, and appears here exactly as the copy in the IGF library, with additions. The time period covered by the Four Masters here is from the 12th to the 17th century, with annotations covering the earliest times in Irish History. This is a two volume set, with color frontis in each, and a large folding map showing the location of families as given in the annals themselves. Celtic lettering is found on specific pages. New IGF map index included in this edition only. There is no comparable work to that of the Four Masters in Irish History and genealogy.
Customer Reviews:
J. Chrys Dougherty - early review.......2006-08-22
I haven't had time for more than a brief review of both volumes, but since our family from Derrylehan, Donegal, is descended from the O'Daughertaighs of Inshowen, this work is a treasure of infomation of which I have long known but now for the first time have had access to in an excellent translation. I have traced all references to the O'Dohertys in both volumes, but have not yet had time to trace the grandmother's McMahans of Fermanaugh. These books are a big help to anyone wanting to understand the culture of Ireland from the 11th to the 17th century.
First Ever English Translation of the Four Masters (1846).......2003-08-07
A very impressive work, in 2 volumes, hardbound, with four color frontis and the almost forgotten original map of Irish Family locations. The fold out map is about 20 x 25 and is the best of the genre. The Annals by the Four Masters are perhaps the most noted source in Irish history and this was the first translation into English (1846). The formal text is complete from the 12th to the 17th century. In addition, the annotations cover Irish history from the earliest times. We have been waiting for this edition to be published ! (note that Connellans translation preceeded that of O'Donovan.) Helpful index to the old map has been added for the first time. These Annals are in the English language. A few pages have some age markings on them from the original, and it remains a magnificent set of books. All in all, this is one of a kind, with a distinctive color frontis, some celtic lettering, and a map that has been out of print for over 150 years . If you have been waiting for the Annals as we have,
this is a real treat. Connellan, was a leading gaelic scholar, and this first ever translation laid the groundwork for all that would follow in the field.

The Leadership Secrets of a Legendary CEO
Jack Welch has long been esteemed as one of the greatest business leaders of our time. An ordinary man who came from modest means, he developed an extraordinary character and an effective executive style that, when he was tapped to lead General Electric in 1981, vaulted him into business history. His remarkable story is truly an inspiration to leaders from all walks of life.
In Jack Welch and Leadership, business expert and bestselling author James W. Robinson illuminates the leadership secrets of a man who created an unflinching set of principles that enabled him to not only conquer obstacles in his youth, but also triumph in a brutal marketplace that destroys billion-dollar corporations in the blink of an eye. You'll discover how Welch's vision and inexhaustible energy allowed him to take GE from a $13 billion organization to a $494 billion cash engine, how his demand for precision and excellence spawned the legendary Work-Out program, and how his passion for teaching created a corporate culture that cultivated new leaders. From the dark days of the Kidder Peabody scandal and the failed Honeywell bid to the renaissance of NBC and GE's securing its place atop the business world, Robinson reveals a Welch who is both steely and human.
Today's business world requires leaders with guts and an indomitable spirit who can turn on a dime and build real company value. Welch was such a leader—he succeeded brilliantly where others failed. Guided by his magnificent example, so can you.
"Jack Welch has not only trasformed General Electric into a global powerhouse, his leadership principles and management initiatives have inspired legions of fans and followers throughout the business community. It's a tremendous American success story, and Jim Robinson is the ideal person to tell it."

The calm waters of Southern California are brought to a boil as the crew deals with government agents, spies, bombs, and bullets. Customer Reviews:
Manahan's dramatic fiction reads like a real live action report.......2007-05-21
Master Chief John Manahan's gripping account of drug wars on the high seas is pure fiction (he says in his disclaimer) but it reads like a real live action report. From the first chapter, it's obvious Manahan follows the first rule for writers: Write what you know. Manahan writes what he knows, and after a career that took him to the rank of master chief petty officer, the highest level a non-commissioned officer can reach in the U.S. Coast Guard, Manahan knows a lot! The action seems like it's really happening. But be on guard for a dramatic story that is immensely complex, where you'll meet individual crew members of a battery of ships with a variety of missions that will challenge your ability to keep them sorted out. But the loose ends are all tied up masterfully in an action-packed finale. The story is marred with more than a few typographical errors, but the action is so real you get used to the typos after a while, without which I would have rated this novel FIVE STARS. --Stan Bailey
L/E PAT is Definitely An Exciting Page Turner!.......2006-12-26
John Manahan's L/E PAT is definitely a story you don't want to put down and most certainly don't want to end. The characters are lively and endearing and the multiple story lines certainly keep the reader on his/her toes! The discriptive language, engaging dialogue between characters, and shocking twists really makes this a must read for any action lover!

Book Description
IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE
WHEN YOU'RE SERVING WITH THE VERY BEST
For UDT/SEAL team member Gary R. Smith, just being part of an elite military organization wasn't enough--he had to be in the thick of the action. Because in bloody, violent Vietnam he learned there's no stronger bond than the one forged in the gut-wrenching chaos of combat. During ambushes, PRU combat patrols, and extractions from hot LZs, Smith depended on the courage and sacrifice of his fellow SEALs, who time and again placed their own lives on the line so that he might survive.
In MASTER CHIEF, Gary Smith covers his fifth tour in Vietnam and his rise to the highest enlisted rank, master chief petty officer. Characteristically, Smith holds nothing back when describing life during wartime in one of the world's toughest fighting units.
Based on the author's own experience, as well as his own and others' diaries, letters, and documents, and on extensive interviews, MASTER CHIEF is an outstanding memoir of a warrior who answered the call to arms when
his country needed him.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of the better SEAL books..............2002-03-23
Having read my way through a good portion of books on the SEAL mission in Vietnam, I would have to say this one ranks pretty low. The author seems to be unfocused and the story floundering for a bit. Actually, to be honest, i never finished the book, a rare thing for me, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Don't worry about this one for your SEAL list.
This book was OK........2001-04-11
This book was OK. I think though there should have been a glossary or something in the back of the book for all the Vietnamese words he used! I couldn't keep them straight. As well as he himself kept jumping inbetween calling his commanding officer Mr. name and Dai Uy. It got confusing as to whether he was talking about the same guy. Enjoyed reading about all of the missions!
Master Chief Diary of a Navy Seal.......2000-08-09
This is the worst Seal Book ever written.
Ray J Sonnier.......2000-02-10
I am far from bieng an expert on Seals, but this book in my opinion left a lots to be desired. I found it to be wandering a lots which made it very boring to me in comparison to the other books I have read by Nam Vets. By the way I was one of these Vets. We work alots in the Delta with Navy personel, and I found those people to be very good at their job.. Roadrunner6 out
Great Book.......1999-03-30
Gary Smith tells about his five tours of duty as a Navy Seal in Vietnam through three different books: Death in the Jungle, Death in the Delta and Master Chief. All of these well written books are exceptional in that they not only tell the story of terror filled seconds during battle, but Smith also talks about the sheer boredom and mundane tasked that must be done. His stories about killing VC - VC ants that is, while waiting on ambushes are funny in otherwise near death incounters. Smith is able to talk about the inhumane acts that occur in war just as he is able to talk about the fun times. I was brought to tears while reading about the mother and baby killed during an ambush of a Junk and equally shed tears of laughter when he cooked "Venison" that barked!
Smith does an exceptional job interspersing Vietnamese words and phrases in all three books which gives the read a sense that Smith was a professional that took the time to increase his advantage by learning their language. The one criticism I can point out is that he listed too many of the overnight ambushes. It became hard to distinguish one from another after awhile. I also get the feeling that there is much more to tell about his tour with the PRU but that it might bring up too many unpleasant memories.
Finally, Smith makes a one sentence statement that Captain Gormly was one of the best COs he ever served under which speaks volumes about both warriors. A Very good set of books and I recommend these to anyone interested in getting a birds eye view of war from a Seal's perspective.

1917. These Reminiscences were written and published by the Author in his fiftieth year, shortly before he started on a trip to Europe and America in 1912 for his failing health. We are taken into his very bosom, and are permitted to watch the processes of the development of his mental spiritual natures, and thus acquire such understanding and ability to appreciate his writings. If there are those who are at a loss to interpret for themselves the meaning of Rabindranath's poems, dramas, and essays, they are advised to read this most interesting volume. It will serve as a key to and an illumination of his other works. Illustrated.
Book Description
1915. Illustrated. The story of the life of Rabindranath Tagore, India's greatest living poet, awarded the Nobel Prize for idealistic literature, which earned him an international reputation. Mabie writes in the Introduction that: This account of Tagore's interests and activities, his devotion to education and his methods of dealing with boys, his habits of work, his hopes for India, gives Western readers an intimate impression of a personality formed by Eastern ideas and conditions, and disclosing the richness and beauty which flow from them and witness to their vitality and value. As a poet Tagore needs no commentator save a willingness to see truth from the other side of the world to give the imagination its rightful place beside the critical faculty. His thought is elusive and must be patiently pursued, and his speech is saturated with symbolism and imagery; he cannot be read at full speed; he must be waited upon and communed with. But if he demands much it is because he has much to give; and what he has to give is precisely what we need in this overworked Western world and this eager, impatient age.

East/West: Gandhi/Tagore.......1998-01-03
Worth seeking out, warranting reprinting, this is a dense, substantial, but readible biography, less concerned with literary criticism than with the psychological dynamics and political realities of Tagore's creative life. Ultimately, it is about East and West, which is to say, about Tagore the globalist who sought integration of east and west, as contrasted with Gandhi, the nationalist. Tagore believed that the human condition was first of all cultural, Gandhi regarded it as first of all political. This is a comprehensive but penetrating study not only of Tagore, but of modern India.

captivating... I still wish I have the book

Book Description
The first English publication of the Nobel Laureate's autobiographical writings, composed at landmark moments during his later life. These six prose pieces, essays and lectures provide invaluable insight into the intellectual and spiritual development of the man so admired by figures as diverse as Akhmatova, Einstein, Gide, Gandhi, Neruda, Pasternak, H.G. Wells and W.B. Yeats. This important book documents Tagore's thoughts and feelings chronologically, and provides revealing glimpses into his development as a poet. A heart full of soul, a mind at its service that could cut like a knife, and the spirit of a child are all present here.
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the first non-Westerner to receive the Nobel Prize, composed the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
Joe Winter has previously translated Tagore's most famous work, Gitanjali, also published by Anvil Press, as Song Offerings.
Devadatta Joardar is a resident of Calcutta and a Bengali scholar.

He loved the people of his country and strove for the rights of the rural poor to dignity and social justice.

compact wisdom.......2007-04-16
This is a delightful little book, full of insights from poets and philosophers who span more than 20 centuries and as many languages. While most of the authors are famous, most of the quotations are not, so you can expect surprises. Simple line-drawn illustrations by the editor, Cicely Buckley, add to the charm of the volume. This timeless classic will make a great gift for anyone you care about, no matter their age.

With index by authors and original languages, which are often included with the English translations: the Greeks and Romans (Pericles and Robert Kennedy share a page on war); Isaiah and Palestinian poets and JFK speak of the children. Antonio Machado and a Japanese proverb remind us that "we make our own way as we go...se hace camino al andar", Rabelais says laughter is the essence of man while Camus turns a corner to discover the beauty of morning dew. A Finnish proverb says "when you drink the water, think of the well", while the Russian version says "remember the well-digger." Harlan Ellison (script writer of one of the memorable Star Wars scenarios) gives the worst case scenario for the world, against which Eluard's Seasons and Asian wisdom from Persia and the far East shine, while Thomas Hardy reminds us, in planning, to take a good look at the worst. Listen to Cervantes: La musica compone los animos descompuestos ~ Music restores broken souls and lightens the worries of the mind. Heed the advice of a Nigerian proverb: The biting fly gets no satisfaction on the back of a turtle. Scott Momaday and other native Americans wisely propose what it takes to make a beautiful day. 3rd edition now includes e.e.cummings, Thoreau, Wordsworth, Paul Eluard.
