What an AWESOME book!!.......2007-10-02
I received this cookbook last Christmas from one of my clients. I LOVE this book! I have made SO many of the recipes. Better Homes and Gardens sure knows how to make a dinner flavorful. I purchased this book to give to another VERY busy individual who also has a family that depends on them for dinner. Put the ingredients in and you are DONE!! Some recipes require browning of the meat. Please do this. It makes it VERY tasty.
definitely alot of variety in recipes..........2007-10-01
Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens)
The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that you REALLY don't know what you're getting until you have it in hand and you're reading it...This cookbook is no different...I expected alot of crockpot recipes, but I didn't expect some of the recipes with such unusual ingredient combinations...And what's with adding mushrooms so much or making it spicy hot so much *ICK*...you know, just because you CAN mix things together, it doesn't mean you SHOULD...Oh well, for what it is, it's a good cookbook but it could be better so 4 out of 5 stars it is!
yummy food.......2007-08-11
I am enjoying this cookbook. Out of the last about 6 recipes I tried, I liked 5 of them so that's pretty good!
Great meals.......2007-06-08
I highlight all the favorites and there are lots to highlight in this simple to make cookbook.
It's OK, .......2007-04-14
I was looking for more basic and simple recipes that it seems to eschew.

Have created several of these great recipes. Nutritous and tasty. With our family being on the go and working 12 hour shifts, crock pot cooking is definitely a must.

Yum.......2006-12-17
I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but I generally have a good eye for "deliciousness"---and these recipes look very good. In addition, most members of my family are vegetarians and as I reviewed the book, I thought of easy substitutions or deletions--for example the Corn Chowder---I could make it without the bacon, and sprinke dried, jarred bacon on before serving to my son. The hot cocoa recipe looks luscious and I am reminded of the best cocoa I ever had which was slowly heated for about 2 hrs on the stove top---the crockpot would make that much easier. Who ever thought peach cobbler, our favorite dessert, could be made in a crockpot?

Very good cookbok for Whole Foods.......2006-11-18
I am someone who prefers to cook with whole foods and all natural ingredients. I never want to use pre-mixed items like cream-of-anything soup, salad dressing or taco mixes, so I was happy that all the recipes in this book rely on fresh ingredients. I have a well stocked kitchen (with many spices) so I admit, that has helped with some of the more elaborate dishes. Overall, all the recipes I have tried so far have been flavorful, though in some cases I choose to add additional salt, pepper or other spices, but that is a matter of preference. I think this is a great book with a wide variety of dishes. It is worth a try if you hate store bought mixes and "recipes" that rely on pre-mixed condiments for flavor.
Recipes Did Not Sell Me.......2003-12-30
I was not happy with this book. The recipes they provided were not recipes you would use on an everyday basis. In my mind, I was looking for rib, roast, and chile recipes. I found myself just thumbing through the book with no desire to cook anything in there. I believe there are better books out there. Save your money.
Picky eater.......2001-12-01
I'm sure this book may be helpful for some people, but I was looking for more simple recipes for a very picky eater. Things that had more pasta, ground meat, etc. There are things in some of these recipes that I don't even know what they are or where to get them, and I'm sure my son wouldn't eat. Also some of the prep time was quite long, I want things I can put in there and forget it. If I spend 45 minutes preparing a meal, I shouldn't have to wait 2 or more hours on the slow cooker to finish it.
Love my Crockpot, this book helps me use it!.......2001-10-21
I love my crockpot. I use it all the time. It is so easy to have a complete meal on the table. Cheaper cuts of meat come out tasting great, no hot ovens and stove tops for little fingers to get burned on, easy to use, and good results.
This book is a great resource for Crockpot cooking. The recipes turn out great. Almost everything is easy to make and there are not any unusual or exotic ingredients called for in the meals.
There are a few good crockpot recipe books available that are still in print. This is one that I am glad I have on my shelves.
It was OK.......2000-10-03
When I ordered this cookbook I was not expecting what I recieved. I wanted a book that had meals that used mostly what I had on hand. I wanted guidance on how to cook in a crock pot basic meals. I have made a few recipes in this book and they were ok, nothing outstanding. Most of the recipes I would not make. Hope this is helpful.

Meehawl MacMurrachu's old skinny cat kills a robin redbreast on the roof one day, forging the first link in a long, peculiar chain of events. For the robin redbreast is the particular bird of the Leprecauns of Gort na Gloca Mora, and the Leprecauns retaliate by stealing Meehawl MacMurrachu's wife's washing-board, and Meehawl asks the Philosopher who lives in the center of the pine wood called Coilla Doraca for advice in locating the washboard...and the chain leads on and on, up to Angus Og himself and to the country of the gods. Unique and inimitable, this is one of the great tales of our century.

Myths, Quests, and Leprechauns.......2007-07-24
Stephens' "Crock of Gold" is an interesting little amalgam of cosy Irish folktale,Celtic mythology, and the Hero's Quest. What makes it unusual is that, through the course of the book, three different heroes--male and female--undertake separate life-altering journeys. The characters all have interesting eccentricities, and their struggles present different morals of life. The ending, such as it is, is diffuse and you can decide for yourself just what sort of allegory the author intended. A pleasant little tale for bedtime reading.
The audio version is a gem........2006-01-21
As other reviewers have said at length, The Crock of Gold is a fine read, no doubt. But it is at its best read aloud. If you can find the version read masterfully by (I think) Donal Donnelly, which was offered on cassette a few years ago, you are in for a treat. The language sings, and it is wonderful to hear the Gaelic names read aloud. Listening to this book is a rare pleasure.
A genuine timeless classic........2004-01-30
James Stephens is one of the writers who produced the works that have come to be called the "Celtic Revival". In the late Victorian era writers in Ireland, Scotland and Wales had their own rennaisance of the classical works of medieval celtic literature. In Ireland this revival took on an added dimension as it became associated through figures such as Yeates and Maude Gonne with the struggle for Irish Independence. Ultimately the rediscovery of classical celtic poetry and prose gave a language, a history and a nationalistic justification to the rebels.
William Butler Yeates, John Millington Synge, Oliver St.John Gogarty, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett are all renowned worldwide for their contributions to international literature. Be it on stage or in prose, they brought a poetic flavour to their art, a free flowing and lilting verse that permeates all their work. This signature blank verse gives an ancient grandeur to the literature of the period, carrying echoes of the ancient celtic poets, and redolent of Chauser and Shakespeare.
James Stephens is less well known than his compatriots, but no lesser in quality. If anything his is the purest voice of the Celtic Revival. He is easily on a par with writers such as John Milton and Edmunde Spencer, who wrote similarly high works of art.
But the beauty of Stephens is that his subject is the folklore of daily Irish life. Happy and jolly tales of leperachauns and fairies, small events of great import, the philosophy of field and wood. It is at once grand and accessible. The tales have a childlike attraction and simplicity to them that is belied by the quality of the prose.
Whether reading for a bit of fantasy, a good laugh, or to study literature, you will not regret reading these tales.
So much to love!.......2002-12-07
If you revel in pagan dementia, and are in for a solid laugh, James Stephens's Crock of Gold will have you rolling. The words are poetry. The thoughts are strangely intellectual. The characters are truly from another dimension. A masterpiece like no other. Long live the Philosopher and his musings...
"So saying, he returned his eyes to his nose, and his mind to his maxim, and lapsed to a profound reflection wherein nothing sat perched on insubstantiality, and the Spirit of Artifice goggled at the puzzle."
Try that one at home!
The Philosopher's Delightful Life-Companion.......1999-07-18
Pure free-poetry as only Stephens can do it, these pages have informed and nourished me--along with friends and lovers--for nearly fifty years: From the time when I first happily seduced my young wife by reading Chapter VI to her...to my having now become one of the Two Philosophers who continue its argument. I was overjoyed to find this edition back in print again, with its wood-block prints and original type plates still intact. Don't miss this one.

Crockpot recipes that begin in a bag with the dry ingredients and are completed later with the liquid ingredients when ready to be prepared. Crockpot recipes that begin in a bag with the dry ingredients and are completed later with the liquid ingredients when ready to be prepared. This book will appeal to a great number of people of different ages and different life styles. This book plus a crockpot, is a great idea for college students as well as empty nesters and yet, it also appeals to young working mothers with very little time or bachelors with very little cooking talent. It works well for week-end campers and recreational vehicle travelers because the bags can be made in advance and the crockpot takes up very little space. The ingredients needed can be bought at the destination point because the items are not hard to find. The recipes are easy and self- explanatory and many are meals in a pot. Sometimes there will be leftovers for lunch the next day. They are also very tasty and nutritious. This is Francis Barrineau's third book.

Grab Bag of Crockpot Fun.......2007-08-17
Frances Barrineau, one of the great home cooks of the East, comes back with another winner after her adventuresome Grab a Bag cookbooks, and here she has added a welcome twist, throwing a crockpot into the mix instead of relying on mere bags as she did for her two previous best sellers. As Barrineau points out, the crockpot is not everyone's friend, but if your family is forgiving enough to grant you mercy for the crockkpot mistakes you're bound to make, then you're ahead of the game.
She warns that dairy products don't work well in the sturdy pot du crock, but otherwise you will be able to adapt freely your favorite recipes to fit the convenience of this modern, yet strangely ancient appliance. My mother used to tell me, based on her studies in anthropology with Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead, that if you take the average kitchen in the US, probably the most ancient and time honoured thing in it will be the humble crockpot. Remember when they were made of terra cotta and looked like flowerpots? My mother did, and Margaret Mead too.
Barrineau's recipes are tasty, nutritious, and so easy to make you;ll be kicking yourself for having exiled your crockpot to the dust back of the kitchen shelves. College boys who have never done anything in the way of cooking will love this boo, it's durable, takes a lot of abuse, and is written in simple, colorful English, and it gives a handy chart of spices and tells you ahead of time what they will taste like--everything from nutmeg, and ginger, to that mysterious "apple pie spice" that children love--coeds too. If you are in the dark about what "grab a bag" means, just think of going to the supermarket or the local produce mart, grabbing a bag, filling it with edibles, and then assembling the dry ingredients in your crockpot, saving the wet ones until you're on your hike or camping trip, or perhaps an intimate supper for "the two of you." Afterwards, you'll have enough for a lunch the next day with several friends, or just by yourself alone in the busy cafeteria.
My mother always said, you're never alone when you've got your crockpot nearby, and Barrineau will help you over the bumps of first cooking with it--of first love I had almost said.
That other reviewer who disliked this book wasn't very kind! But ignore me at your peril, potential buyer (and crockpot user).
DISAPPOINTMENT!!.......2007-01-28
I DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING IN THIS BOOK TO HELP ME AS A NEW CROCKPOT OWNER. I HAVE SINCE PURCHASED TWO DIFFERENT BOOKS ON CROCKPOT COOKING WHICH I ENJOY VERY MUCH. SORRY BUT YOUR BOOK WAS NOT AT ALL WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I AM GOING TO GIVE IT TO MY DAUGHTER AND HOPE SHE FINDS IT MORE HELPFUL

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-05-12
I loved the easy reading of this book. I haven't made one recipe that wasn't delicious. A great book for a beginning cook.
What a Great Crock Pot Book!!!.......2006-10-15
I bought my first copy of this book at a little gift shop in NC while on vacation. It did have a down home feel to it. I have since made many recipes in the book and I was pleased with all of them. I somehow lost my copy and I am now ready to order another one as I miss the recipes. Don't forget to try the deserts. My kids love chocolate and they enjoyed the recipes with the chocolate cake mix. Comfort food :)
What a disappointment!.......2005-06-27
I was incredibly disappointed with this book. A lot of recipes are recipes I wouldn't even try. For instance, the author suggests for breakfast that you cook white rice in the crockpot overnight and serve it with soft boiled eggs. Excuse me? My family would laugh me out of the kitchen if I tried to serve this!
But I did try 5 of the recipes. The first I tried was the meatballs and gravy, and while it was very good, it tasted no different when cooked in the oven! But it was ready about 3 hours sooner. The other recipes I tried were Country Ham, Roaster Bag Chicken, Barbie-Q In a Bag, and the Chicken Risotto. The Chicken Risotto was completely tasteless. The Roaster Bag chicken was good, but nothing spectacular. The Barbie-Q Chicken was decent, but again, nothing spectacular. And the Country Ham was awful. The ham itself was good, but she suggests you put it on a rack of sweet potatoes. I thought the glaze would sweeten the potatoes a little, but it practically disappeared with all the ham juice and I ended up with meaty ham-flavored sweet potatoes. Yuck!
All-in-all a huge disappointment. Most of the other recipes don't even sound appealing, like Chili Wheat, Tofu Chili, Oatballs in Gravy, lamb recipes. And I agree with the previous reviewer, recipes for things like burritos and tacos are useless. Who wants to spend all that time cooking the meat of a taco?
Useless waste of money.
not what it's cooked up to be.......2004-11-21
Too many of the recipies in the book are not really useful. Cooking oatmeal in the crockpot is not a time saver. Some of the recipies are not even crock pot recipies. For examble, the recipie for chicken enciladas says to cook the chicken overnight in the crockpot, and then chop it up to make enchiladas the traditional way. If you didn't already know that, then you need a beginners book for crock pot (the for dummies series has one). And if you did know that, then the recipe is useless. All in all, I'm pretty sad that I bought it.
Simple, but useful.......2004-10-27
Compared to many crock-pot cookbooks on the market, this one focuses on simple, somewhat old-fashioned dishes -- the kind I remember seeing en mass at potluck suppers as a child.
The directions are easy to follow, and the introduction section has some really helpful hints about crock-pot cooking in general.
This cookbook is also handwritten rather than typed, which may be a turn-off for some readers, but actually made the book feel more like reading Mom's recipes to me!
