4 out of 5 stars This calendar is quite popular at my house.......2004-04-22

I don't know anything about Annde Geddes. All I know is that thiis calendar is up at my house and people love it. I can't believe all the rave reviews people give it when they see it.

The product is simple enought. It's a 12-month calendar with a picture above the month. All of the pictures in this calendar contain a baby dressed in outfit paying tribute to the month. All of the pictures are well taken and I must admit the pictures are quite cute. Some don't do as much for me as others do, but it's not that bad of a calendar.

I would never buy this calendar for myself. I would buy it for any woman in my life that loves children and babies and I have. It's a cute calendar that can be enjoyed by all.

1 out of 5 stars High Kitsch.......2003-12-02

Geddes' manages to degrade and isolate her subjects. Her prehistoric "cutsie" images, though appealing to a kitsch market, do not allow for a social comment to transcend the visual confines of her exploitive commercial "photography". In some senses, she could be seen as a radical post-modernist artist, as she abstracts the subject from social normality and removes any dignity from the development of the child, if that was her so calling in contemporary art. Yet it is frightening to be in an age where people will grasp such superficially degrading images. Geddes has made a personal fortune off photographing babies, subjects usually positioned in inhumane circumstances (ie: babies in flowerpots or dipped in custard), which removes human dignity and allows us to question Geddes moral intent.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2003-09-18

Anne Geddes is a truly gifted artist. I have admired her work for a long time now and it just gets better and better every time. God has blessed with a truly unique talent to capture the innocence and fragility of such young children!

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of a Child.............2003-09-13

The way that Anne Geddes shares her love of Children and Photgraphy is shown in EVERY photo she shares with the world. I get such joy from seeing her work. As always the babies are absolutely adorable. The beauty of each child is so different. It is not always in the face but in the feet and hands and ears and toes and tiny fingers. I for one am in love with her work and will continue to buy her items.

1 out of 5 stars ANNE GEDDES EXPLOITS!.......2003-08-13

Has anyone ever given a thought to the young children who are grossly exploited in ALL of ANNE GEDDES work. This woman has made her money off exploiting babies who have had their basic human rights taken away from them. This is a significant breech of human rights.

Book Description

"Once I picked it up I did not put it down until I finished. . . . What Schwed has done is capture fully-in deceptively clean language-the lunacy at the heart of the investment business."
-- From the Foreword by Michael Lewis, Bestselling author of Liar's Poker

". . . one of the funniest books ever written about Wall Street."
-- Jane Bryant Quinn, The Washington Post

"How great to have a reissue of a hilarious classic that proves the more things change the more they stay the same. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
-- Michael Bloomberg

"It's amazing how well Schwed's book is holding up after fifty-five years. About the only thing that's changed on Wall Street is that computers have replaced pencils and graph paper. Otherwise, the basics are the same. The investor's need to believe somebody is matched by the financial advisor's need to make a nice living. If one of them has to be disappointed, it's bound to be the former."
-- John Rothchild, Author, A Fool and His Money, Financial Columnist, Time magazine

Humorous and entertaining, this book exposes the folly and hypocrisy of Wall Street. The title refers to a story about a visitor to New York who admired the yachts of the bankers and brokers. Naively, he asked where all the customers' yachts were? Of course, none of the customers could afford yachts, even though they dutifully followed the advice of their bankers and brokers. Full of wise contrarian advice and offering a true look at the world of investing, in which brokers get rich while their customers go broke, this book continues to open the eyes of investors to the reality of Wall Street.

5 out of 5 stars An Amusing Review of Wall Street's Denizens, Past and Present.......2007-09-24

This funny book is a mild rebuke of Wall Street operators and Wall Street customers alike. In fact, there are many more outright crooks on the street than Schwed lets on, specially if they perceive you as an easy mark, an orphan or a widow. I speak from experience having seen them churn an account to milk it of commissions.

I was delighted to discover how old some of the Wall Street sayings are. It seems that nothing really changes in the human condition. One passage I found very entertaining is about a large group of Wall Street operators competing in a coin tossing game. As soon as you lose a toss, you are out of the game meaning that with each toss half of the players are gone. If you start with 500,000 players, after 15 tosses you have about 16 people left in the game. According to Schwed, these lucky people will soon take on airs of expert coin tossers even if they are winning based on pure luck. What I found amusing was that the author of a recent investment best seller uses this exact scenario to "prove" that most people who make money investing are just lucky. I wonder if this unnamed author read Schwed.

I found one commentary rather unnerving. Schwed say that you cannot buy "competence" on Wall Street. You can find a competent plumber and a competent lawyer or doctor but you cannot find a competent investment advisor. While I'm no fan of Wall Street operators, this statement seems over the top. They might be hard to find or maybe the competent ones don't need clients, but that there is a total lack of competence on Wall Street must be an exaggeration.

Read the book and be prepared to be entertained and instructed. There is a lot of solid Wall Street experience behind the humor.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-09-11

All I can say is READ THIS! READ THIS! READ THIS! Very amusing and very dry treatise by a pro (yes, Mr. Carl) who clearly has been around a couple of blocks in Lower Manhattan.

5 out of 5 stars American classic.......2007-01-17

This is a great book. The writing is first rate and the point of view is one that you should take into account as an investor, if not follow. It is a book that can be read many times. It is brilliant and a great read. Don't miss it!

3 out of 5 stars An Occasionally Humorous But Dated Take on Human Nature.......2005-10-30

In a supposed conversation between the writers Ernest Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, it is claimed that Fitzgerald said that the rich are better than the rest of us, to which Hemmingway replied, "Yes, I know. They have more money." For me, this is and perhaps will always be the most humorous statement regarding the fundamental truth about money, class and human nature.

This was one of those leisurely reads on The Street that on occasion served the reader a laugh or two. Human nature remains the same then as well as now. Reading this book, I believe, will give you insight into the follies of today, which are on a grander and more pervasive scale than they were in the Roaring Twenties, because now with the internet, any fool can participate with his (often borrowed) money.

5 out of 5 stars As funny today as it was years ago!.......2005-01-17

I read this book years ago before Amazon.com was even a glint in Jeffs eye, and happenstance put it back in my hands recently. It is every bit as hilarious today as it was back then. I came here as I was curious to see if it was still in print and if so, what people today were saying about it.

As not enough of the reviews reflected my experience I felt compelled to post my two cents so as to keep any prospective readers from being scared away.

Even if you've never had any personal experience with Wall Street, the Chicago Board of Trade or anything else in between, if you'd like a very, very funny read I recommend this book. If you *do* have investment experience you'll find it even funnier.

If you're going to be taking the Paoli local into town anytime soon, look for the copy Scott left on the bench on his way to Starbuck's. I promise you if read with a sense of humour you'll be howling with laughter before you get to Daylesford!

Book Description

The Peters Projection World Map is an equal area projection.

That means that one square inch anywhere on the map is an equal number of square miles. All the countries of the world are represented at true size and true proportion. This is one of the few commercially available maps that is fair to all peoples. Most maps drastically enlarge the size of the Northern hemisphere countries and diminish the size of the Southern hemisphere countries. This traditional bias leads most people to overestimate the importance of the developed nations based on their inflated appearance. The 1999 Peters map comes laminated (3 mil, edge seal) and rolled in a durable plastic tube. An explanation in enclosed with the map including comparisons to other common projections (Mercator, Van der Grinten, Robinson, Tripel-Winkel, etc.).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Map Versus territories.......2001-02-25

In one of Borges's Ficciones, the only true map is one that reproduces precisely the territory mapped. The absurdity of a map ratio 1::1 leads us to consider the unavoidable distortion in any representation. Nonetheless, Peters' map highlights more than one convenient distortion of the Mercator projection map. Mercator's helps defer the inevitable realization of the disproportionate apportioning of the world according to European priorities, and undercuts the rhetoric of objectivity legitimizing European policies, particular the "white man's burden". Arno Peters also chooses a neutral color scheme in his map projection and ignores political boundaries and their color selection bias. No one looking at a Mercator projection failed to be impressed at the splash of salmon pink - representing the British Commonwealth - without concluding that indeed, the sun never sets on the British empire. And the threat of a world dominated by communist tyranny seemed even more threatening as a massive blob of yellow menacing the peaceful color scheme of the northern hemisphere. Granted, all maps distort, as do all representations; the Peters projection map distorts least of all.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Point of View.......2000-04-16

People become too enamored with the Peters Map. It is often laden with "politically-correct" overtones. The map IS remarkable, but its a DIFFERENT point-of-view...not the CORRECT one. Every map has certain attributes, and one can use the Peters Projection to see the relative size of the countries. It is quite useful for stimulating students (including adults) to think "outside-the-box" and question their assumptions about many things they KNOW to be true. Well, the truth depends upon your perspective. And it depends upon your assumptions. The Peters Projection Map is a stunning visual metaphor to reinforce the notion that "it all depends upon your perspective." Its especially helpful in cross-cultural (or multicultural) situations where you want to validate a variety of points of view.

"It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by then I was too famous." --Robert Benchley

Such wildly inaccurate self-deprecation is typical of Robert Benchley. In his lifetime he was known as a critic, a humorist, an actor, and an auteur, while the weekly luncheons he shared at the famous Algonquin Hotel Round Table with other luminaries such as Dorothy Parker and Alexander Wollcott became the stuff of legend. Famous, he was, indeed--but also a very fine writer, a fact readers can judge for themselves in The Best of Robert Benchley, a compendium of 72 of his funniest stories. There is, for example, his meditation on the future of the species, Future Man: Tree or Mammal, in which he posits that the humans of the future will be both brightly dressed and legless (you'll have to read the essay to find out why); or The Real Public Enemies, in which he laments the hostility of inanimate objects: "Take for example, when you are trying to read a newspaper on top of a bus. Suppose you want to open it to page four. The thing to do is not to hold it up and try to turn it as you would an ordinary newspaper. If you do, it will turn into a full-rigged brigantine, each sheet forming a sail and will crash head-on into your face, blinding you and sometimes carrying you right off the bus." His solution? Deceit: "Say, as if talking to yourself, 'Well, I guess I'll turn to page seven.' Or better yet, let the paper overhear you say, 'Oh, well, I guess I won't read any more.'"

Benchley's ruminations are almost always on small matters: playing cards, attending banquet dinners, home repairs; yet they are universal experiences. Who has not, at some point in his or her life, stood in an impossibly long line at the post office, only to discover, upon finally arriving at the counter, that some essential element of the letter or package has been done incorrectly or left undone entirely? No subject is too small or too trivial to escape Benchley's notice, yet he invests each with the trappings of epic conflict--underdog Benchley against the newspaper, or hay fever, or noise--struggles which all too often leave him bloodied but unbowed.

Benchley was kinder than Dorothy Parker, less manic than S.J. Perlman, not quite so curmudgeonly as James Thurber--and arguably the funniest of them all. This collection serves as a living memorial to one of the century's great comic geniuses. --Alix Wilber

    5 out of 5 stars What a joy!.......2003-06-25

The world can be divided into two groups of people, those who have read Benchley and those who have not. By far, the happiest people are those who fall into the former category.

Robert Benchely was one of the most talented humorists ever to grace the pages of American magazines. His personna was that of a befuddled upper middle class pater familias. He did not take on the great events of the day, this would have been a waste of time given his world view. What he did do was to satirize brilliantly the little inconsistencies of daily life.

This collection of Benchley's essays is a welcomed one including some 72 examples of his wit and whimsy. It is literally impossible to select a favorite from so many good pieces One can select any one of them at random and discover some gem of Benchely's imagination. Although this edition is out of print I urge anyone seeking to experience the wit of Benchley to seek out a copy.

    Book Description

For many aficionados of the New Yorker magazine, the drawings of Peter Arno, William Steig, Charles Addams, and Saul Steinberg epitomize its sophisticated wit and disarming humor. In The Comic Worlds of Peter Arno, William Steig, Charles Addams, and Saul Steinberg, the first full-scale scholarly study of the subject, Iain Topliss considers the work of each artist, traces the development of his art, and recalls the cultural and social context in which it was created.

Topliss delves into the nature of humor and the elements that make successful cartoons funny, paying special attention to matters of style and technique. He draws particular attention to the ways in which these four artists mocked the status quo without alienating the magazine's readers. Indeed, argues Topliss, the New Yorker's cartoons helped define American consciousness in the mid-twentieth century.

Illustrated with more than fifty drawings from the artists published in the magazine between 1925 and 1975, The Comic Worlds of Peter Arno, William Steig, Charles Addams, and Saul Steinberg recognizes the achievements of these talented artists and their distinctive contribution to American culture.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ups and Downs.......2007-03-08

Somehow I always wind up first whenever I get a book that I'm sure dozens of other reviewers would be all over, like white on rice! This book, a serious and academic study of four New Yorker cartoonists, I would have thought would be a natural. Maybe people got turned off by the cover, a particularly grisly Charles Addams sketch in a drab, battleship gray color. And yet, the sketch itself, a crowded movie theater packed with weeping, intensely uncomfortable viewers, in the middle of which you see one of Addams' trademark characters watching whatever is happening on the screen (a death?) and chuckling happily--yes, the sketch itself encapsulates some of Topliss' thoughts about the position of spectatorship vis-a-vis the New Yorker artists he covers.

We see ourselves in Uncle Fester's grin, for we feel we too are different than the rest of the crowd, and that we have a privileged and superior position to what is being displayed on the screen. How these four artists managed to animate their own, very different sense of the "unique," is Topliss' subject.

He won't make you want to read much more about Peter Arno, the aristocratic playboy for whom comics were decidedly slumming. Of William Steig, Topliss shows us how first Karen Horney and then Wilhelm Reich animated his thinking about creativity and the act of drawing. His was a fascinating life, but again, I'm not so sure he was so utterly a genius at his art. Addams and Steinberg come off the best, although Topliss' "fame" angle on Steinberg made him sound a little like those celebrities who complain about the paparazzi even when they're courting press attention.

Topliss sees US culture, New Yorker division, through the distant, cold eyes of an Australian. Sometimes the onlooker sees more of the game, and there's a sense in which one of our better academics might be the best candidate to write about the classic Australian cartoonists of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. Turnabout is fair play, and in the writing game, objectivity is nearly everything. He has a rousing salute to Melbourne at the end of his introduction, in which he also explains why he seems to ignore the contributions of two other excellent cartoonists from the same period and venue, namely, Thurber and Hokinson. His salute to his hometown is worth the price of the book, though it's a little odd. Perhaps he could write another book about the "tall poppy syndrome" and why people in Melbourne are both proud of, and dismissive of, their celebrated comic muse, the one and only Kylie Minogue.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Novelty.......2003-04-04

It should be noted that there is considerable controversy surrounding the so-called "Peters" projection/atlas. Arno Peters announced his "new" projection in 1973, but it was actually first published in 1855 by James Gall and is referred to by cartographers as the Gall Orthographic Equal-Area Projection, or now occasionally as the Gall-Peters Projection. Gall considered this projection to be a novelty with no practical value. What this projection does is show area accurately, but it distorts shapes, directions, and distances.

The real strength in the "Peters" atlas has been in its PR. It has received great marketing that stresses its comparison to the inaccuracies of the essentially defunct Mercator projection (which is accurate for direction but not for area, shape, and distance). So basically Peters' supporters are promoting a map that is overall no better than the one they seek to replace, even though the Mercator is not used anymore.

The truth is that neither the Gall-Peters nor the Mercator is ideal or very useful in today's day and age. The Mercator was at least ideally suited for maps used in exploration, but modern technology has consigned it to the history books. The Gall-Peters only provides interesting looking maps, but like Gall said it is merely a novelty. There are far better projections available for atlases, for example the Robinson's projection that the National Geographic Society and others have adopted.

As for this particular book the text gives the typical marketing hype promoting the Peters projection, but it is visually a well-done book that does a very good job at displaying Gall-Peters maps if you have an interest in them. As a college geography instructor I find this book useful as a teaching tool and utilize it in a map lab by having students compare the maps in it to those of other projections to try to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each projection. It is for the visual quality of the maps in the book and that this book is a useful tool for showing the inadequacy of the Gall-Peters projection that I give this book 3 stars.

      4 out of 5 stars 21st Century Global Perspective.......2002-08-15

All cartographers make choices and tradeoffs when they map the world. The Peters projection tries to give a more accurate perspective of area and scale than more traditional maps. One glance at a Peters projection and one is immediately struck by the size of Africa, and this is just one reason why this projection has earned a reputation as a postcolonial map.

The Peters Atlas is a special treat for those who have an appreciation for this projection. It's an amazingly inexpensive two-part atlas with separate sections for equal area physical and global thematic maps. It's also an interesting alternative to other inexpensive atlases, like the DK Concise/Compact Atlases of the World, which use a more traditional projection system and annotate political and regional maps extensively. The Peters Atlas contains only maps; rather than factual tables or map annotations, it relies on thematic maps which provide global comparisons at a glance.

To be perfectly honest, when I viewed both the Peters and DK Concise Atlases at a local bookstore, I bought the DK Atlas for my niece who is going to college this year. I wasn't planning on buying another atlas for myself, but I ended up buying Hammond Compact Peters World Atlas for myself. Bottom line...I like the Compact Peters Atlas better than the DK Atlas that I bought for my niece, and I think you will too.

      Book Description

The Peters Map of the World is an equal-area map. One square inch anywhere equals the same number of square miles. It presents the relative size of areas with complete accuracy. But what a different world this seems to be. This is a projection of the world that gives areas their `true' relative size. You can easily see how much larger South America is than Europe. On the other hand, compass bearings are not straight on this map. Maps really are like points of view. The drawback to the Peters map is that to achieve relative size with complete accuracy, it is necessary to distort shapes. Think of an orange peel. Hard to get it to lie flat. Cartographers have the same problem wrestling the round earth onto a flat surface. The shapes of continents you are familiar with have been compromised, but how serious is this problem for you? Are the shapes of the major land masses twisted beyond recognition, or do you still recognize them without difficulty? How different are they from true shapes on a globe? **** On the Peters,

Some land areas appear to be stretched vertically; others, horizontally. To be more precise, this projection uses two “base” or “standard” lines, here 45º N and 45º S. These are approximately the lines running through Portland, Oregon (or Milan, Italy) and through New Zealand's South Island (or the Archipelago de los Chonos, Chile). Along these two lines, and only along these two lines, is the map's given scale constant. Between these lines -- which happen to be parallels of latitude -- shapes are distorted in a north-south direction; beyond them they are stretched east-west. Why? Just one reason: in order to accomplish the map's clear goal, which is to represent the sizes of all areas with complete accuracy. Here's the principle involved: every map has its purpose. Only when you have unpacked that purpose are you ready to judge the map itself. You've got to “see through” the opaqueness of the printed map to the mapmaker's intention. Always judge a map by its central aim, not by some extraneous standard The Peters is not perfect for every need. But it does show you how large each country is, and the sizes are possible to compare. The map is 35" x 51" comes in paper, folded, and includes a 4-page Explanation.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice map.......2006-03-06

This is an excellent map for educators if your desire is to give students a non-biased view of the world. Additionally, it is a great tool if your desire is to compare and contrast the various maps and the pros and cons of each. For those of you who are map collectors than this should have long been a part of your collection. Lastly, if your desire is to show the world in its most accurate spatial terms than the Peters Map is for you. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Peters Projection Changed My Views.......2005-10-30

I got this map as a gift. It slowly made me change my view of the world because for once I could easily see the size difference between countries. I never realized how large was the Southern half of the world.
Somehow size and relevance were connected for me before with the mercator map. This was a useful map for me as a student.
