Solid advice for novice and expert alike.......2004-06-08
This book offers some ideas and techniques I hadn't really encountered elsewhere. For instance, Mr. Young suggests and even encourages new bird photographers to spend lots of time photographing common or even tame birds at parks. For most of us who become serious about bird photography, we have come to it as birders, and you know how *they* can get! If not, read The Big Year, and you'll find out. Point being, as birders we seek the unusual, and when we become photographers, we will do the same. Mr. Young elegantly makes his case for the birds in the park, suggesting that learning tricks of exposure, flight shots and all the standards can be learned with a bit less waste of film.
He also gives some good advice for equipment that might be less costly for those of us without the income to support supertelephoto lens habits. I had not heard of the photoadapter setup he shows, but will probably explore this option.
Most of all, he gives excellent advice on all aspects of bird photography; equipment and film selection, location and approaches, and various techniques. I found his liberal use of side by side photos showing the same bird shot with different techniques and approaches to be very helpful. Mr. Young is not afraid to share his mistakes as a teaching tool. He also includes a chapter on archiving, so that one can begin to learn from mistakes made.
All in all, I have gained much from this book and highly recommend it. For me, the one downside is that he is based in the UK, so he is talking about birds and locations there, but this added a bit of fun, as he discusses shooting such rarities as the American robin!

I particularly enjoyed reading this book because of the obvious experience of the author, and his easy manner of relaying information that extends beyond just the practical. For example on the section on The Philosphy of Nature Photography he mentions as his first of four rules, "Love your subject more than your camera." This is advice rarely heard or read, and has the brilliance and profundity that only a simple statement can offer. His selection of topics is quite wide-ranging for a book on essentials, and offers advice on shooting in all 4 seasons, in rain, fog, snow, cold, and even sand and dust storms. It makes you think, and motivates you to search out opportunities that you may have previously rejected. Heiberg's writing reflects his years of teaching this subject; he wants to stimulate his students to further advance their techniques and their imaginations. You get the feeling that he is easily trusted and the advice he is providing is genuine, well thought out and sincere. In addition he has wonderful photographs accompanying the text which demonstrate his artistry as a photographer. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy learning about nature photography.

A helpful book with good practical advice........1999-02-16
This is a hands-on handbook that is enjoyable to read. It is written in the style of a warm chat with a good friend, and begins with a sense of purpose, and feeling for the subject. The chapters get straight to the point, and are filled with good practical advice about photographic principles and techniques that even advanced photographers need reminding about. The numerous tips about understanding nature and wildlife are illuminating and helpful. I was happy to add this book to my library.

This book could be considered a definitive work on .."Why everyone should be a fisherman". And in my estimation - with 30 years of study, research and education on the subject of Outdoor Ethics, the very essence of definition for the word and understanding of ... ETHICS.
Paul Quinnett explains this turbulent topic in a way that no one should ever be confused about it again. With the stroke of his charming humor and subtle, but effective, left-hook-reality, Quinnett powers home the reason for why he is even employable in his chosen profession as psychologist, restorer of mental equilibrium.
If all who needed his services, followed the prescriptions promoted within this book, he'd be out of a job. And, no doubt, gladly on some quiet stream bank, in a quiet spot, enjoying more fishing himself. Let's help him get there and SOON. We could all use the assist!
This is a must have book for anyone who really wants to know the "HOW TO" in escaping the stress and strain of this accelerated, and always demanding society in which we exist.

A fishing man's guide to life.......1999-07-28
I just put down "Pavlov's Trout" and rushed to order "Darwin's Bass". If it is even half as enjoyable, I will be quite happy. Being a fisherman made Quinnett's book extremely fun to read, but I would recommend it to anyone. He writes in the language of angling, but his lessons are in the context of life. I found the chapters dealing with raising children to be among the best.

Quinnett reflects upon life most of the time. Fishing is just an excuse he uses in order to achieve the essence of human existence. It is impossible to stop reading the book because we get hooked all along the lines. Every society has much to learn from Quinnett's approach to life. This is the first major re-assessment of Ivan the Terrible to be published in the West in the post-Soviet period. It breaks away from older stereotypes of the tsar ¿ whether as ¿crazed tyrant¿ and ¿evil genius¿, on the one hand, or as a ¿great and wise statesman¿, on the other ¿ to provide a more balanced picture. It examines the ways in which Ivan¿s policies contributed to the creation of Russia¿s distinctive system of unlimited monarchical rule.
Ivan is best remembered for his reign of terror, the book pays due attention to the horrors of his executions, tortures and repressions, especially in the period of the oprichnina (1565-72), when he mysteriously divided his realm into two parts, one of which was under the direct control of the tsar and his oprichniki (bodyguard). This work argues that the often gruesome forms assumed by the terror reflected not only Ivan¿s personal cruelty and sadism, but also his religious views about the divinely ordained right of the tsar to punish his treasonous subjects, just as sinners were punished in Hell.
Primarily chronological in its organisation, the book focuses on three main aspects of Ivan¿s power: the territorial expansion of the state, the mythology, rituals and symbols of monarchy; and the development of the autocratic system of rule.

This book is exactly what you bargain for: a gateway into the mind of a great scientist. Pavlov work is usually simplified into readily digested views, usually popularized during high school, but here is the chance to venture through his efforts first hand. Skinner, Freud and many others owe a great deal to his investigations, and now you can scrutinize them yourself. No better way to initiate your studies on behaviorism.
