Book Description

On April 10 th, 2003, the 1 st Battalion, 5 th Marine Regiment, faced with the task of seizing the presidential palace in downtown Baghdad, ran headlong into what Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North called, "the worst day of fighting for U.S. Marines." Hiding in buildings and mosques, wearing civilian clothes, and spread out for over a mile, Saddam Hussein's militants rained down bullets and rocket propelled grenades on the 1 st Battalion. But when the smoke of the eight-hour battle cleared, only one Marine had lost his life. Some said the 1 st Battalion was incredibly lucky. But in the hearts and minds of the Marines who were there, there was no question. God had brought them miraculously through that battle.

As the 1 st Battalion's chaplain, Lieutenant Carey Cash had the unique privilege of seeing firsthand, from the beginning of the war to the end, how God miraculously delivered, and even transformed, the lives of the men of the 1 st Battalion. Their regiment, the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the Marines, was the first ground force to cross the border into Iraq, the first to see one of their own killed in battle, and they were the unit to fight what most believe to have been the decisive battle of the war-April 10 th in downtown Baghdad. Through it all, Carey Cash says, the presence of God was undeniable. Cash even had the privilege of baptizing fifty-seven new Christians-Marines and Sailors-during the war in Iraq.

The men of the 1 st Battalion came to discover what King David had discovered long ago--that God's presence could be richly experienced even in the presence of enemies. Here is the amazing story of their experience.

5 out of 5 stars love the book.......2007-05-16

I am reading the book, A Table in the Presence, and just discovered I knew the author's parents in Northern Virginia 30 years ago. The book is wonderfully written and tells a story that needs to be told of God's presence with the troops in Iraq. We need more TRUE accounts such as this one so the citizens of our country are aware of the peace God gives even in the middle of a war. I knew the author's mother as a wonderful Christian woman.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Moving........2007-04-09

I love this book. If you ever want to know what it is like for the guys who are going through the horrors of war in Iraq and Afghanistan this is definitely a book to read. It reveals the sensitivity of the author to the plight of the Marines under his care, the courage and vulnerability of these same Marines and their unyielding faith in the face of danger and the enemy. Very spiritual and emotional read. I dare you to read this and not feel a peculiar wetness in your eyes and a lump in your throat. This is one of those books that tugs at your heart because of the details of the truth. For both the faithful and those who are still searching for a faith.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you proud.......2007-02-08

This was such a refreshing look at the realities of life in the war zone know as Iraq. This is an unadultary look at the life of a Marine Chaplain and the fine men and women he serves in the hell know as Iraq. It was a great book to read as a pastor and even a better book to give to a young husband and father as he shipped out to serve our country in Iraq. Buy it Read it, before you believe the next story from the news media, about why we need to cut and run

4 out of 5 stars A good book from someone who was there........2007-01-04

This is a medium to smallish sized war memoir written by a Navy Chaplain who was attached to a section of Marines at the beginning of Gulf War 2. It is well written and relatively easy to read. The conclusion may leave you wanting to ask, "What happened next?" Of course, the war is still being waged at this time. I met the author and he is what you would expect of an officer, gentleman, and man of God. I enjoyed it and got another copy for my dad. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A blessed book to have for all military!.......2007-10-21

Gave this book to my husband as a gift and he absolutely loved it. After reading it, here's what he had to say:
FANSTASTIC! It should be read by all military members. A true example of God's present intervention on our behalf. We personally met Colonel Mortenson and he is a man of true character.

God bless!

5 out of 5 stars Prayer in action.......2005-12-30

God Saw Them Through is a fascinating, inspiring, and convicting story about the answer to prayer for soldiers in warfare written by Thomas, the father of one of the marines in 2/8. Sometimes the military abbreviations overwhelm, such as one paragraph which includes the following: CO, XO, H&S Company, TAC CP (though definition is given), assistant S2, assistant S3, Main CP (definition given). Thomas gives all of the definitions at least once, but it can be confusing to those who are not familiar with military rankings and abbreviations. He also includes a helpful glossary, organizational charts, and some maps though a few more would be helpful.

Regardless of the difficulties of the abbreviations, the message comes through clearly. God answered the prayers of thousands on behalf of 2/8. Thomas records how more than once individuals back home were awakened to prayer just before 2/8 was going into battle and that God laid specific requests on their hearts that He answered through their prayers. This has been one of the most inspiring books about prayer that I've read in a long time.

Probably men and women with a military background will appreciate the style and content more than those of us who lack the background. This is a story that men in particular can enjoy. The first chapter bogs down a little with the introduction of the 2/8's leadership, but persevering through it pays off. Men and teenaged boys interested in the military might enjoy finding this book in their Christmas stocking.

God's miraculous answers to prayer in keeping the marines safe during firefights will inspire anyone, military or not, to pray. -- Debbie W. Wilson, Christian Book Previews.com

5 out of 5 stars A Batallion to Iraq and Everybody Came Home.......2005-07-07

There are only eighteen infantry battalions in the U.S. Marine Corp. This is the story of one of them through combat in Iraq in 2003. Commanded by Lt. Col. Royal Mortenson whose philosophy of command includes statements such as :It is fine for the Marine to be able to run three miles in eighteen minutes, but it is better to be able to run one mile in seventeen minutes carrying a wounded Marine on your back."

Lt. Col. Mortenson trained his battallion, took it to Iraq, into combat and brought them all back alive. To Lt. Col. Mortenson, a hearty well done. You deserve your subsequent promotion.

The author is the father of one of the young Marines that went to Iraq and back. He believes that the Christian faith of his son and of the rest of the Marines in this unit was responsible for the Lord returning all of these young men home. Who can say that he is wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Story.......2004-12-25

If you are a Christian and believe in the power of prayer, you will find the factual stories in this book very inspirational. Glenn Thomas has done a marvelous job in telling the story of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars Every one of the world's children is unique and special :).......2004-06-29

Stories that help children feel good about themselves are not only enjoyable, but are important as well. One such book is "Pudge Ate a Prophet: A Big Fish Tale." This book is the first book in Kregel's "God Can Use Me" series.

This story stars Pudge, a fish, who happens to be larger than any of his fish friends. Because of his large size, his fish friends did not want to play with him. In fact, most of the time they weren't very nice. One day Pudge meets Jonah, a prophet, and carries out an important mission from God. He delivers Jonah to his destination by carrying him in his large fish belly! From that moment on, Pudge realizes that God made him different for a reason.

MyParenTime.com recommends this book -- it's a "feel good about yourself" story that children of any faith can relate to and enjoy. In addition, the large illustrations are bright and colorful. This story reminds me of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" -- none of his reindeer friends wanted to play with him because he had a nose that glowed. But in the end, Rudolph showed them that he was made different for a reason, and that he was indeed important.

5 out of 5 stars Helping Kids Understand Their Unique Purpose in Life.......2004-05-14

Pudge Ate a Prophet: A Big Fish Tale is a fun retelling of the biblical story of Jonah. "Pudge" the whale, whose real name is Otis, grew up bring big (thus his nickname) and teased by the other kids at Flipper Elementary.

Pudge never understood the reason God had made him so large, until the day God introduced him to a prophet named Jonah and sent him on a special mission.

This 32 page hardcover book, released in February 2004 by Kregel publications, features delightful illustrations by Damon J. Taylor.

Pudge Ate a Prophet is a book that will help young readers and their parents appreciate what makes them special and unique. The book comes with helpful discussion questions and a guide for parents which will help families to "celebrate differences" and know that each of us has a unique purpose in life.

5 out of 5 stars A New Twist on an Old Tale.......2004-04-03

Engaging from the first word! This is a story I've heard and told MANY times, but from a totally different perspective, and I loved that. I curled up with my kids to read this book and they were mesmerized by the amazing artwork and hooked with the story. This is not your typical Bible story and it has an incredible lesson that is taught in in a very kid friendly way. It's a lesson we all need reminded of (no matter how old we are)... that God made us all a certain way for a certain reason and we need to love and accept ourselves and others, just the way we are. The authors were able to sneak in that all important reminder of obedience too! I also appreciated the objectives and discussion questions listed in the back, what a great learning tool to use with kids. I LOVED this book and I can't wait to see what's next in the series!

5 out of 5 stars New and Unique perspective of Jonah story.......2004-03-28

I have read countless variations of the Jonah story, but this is the first from the Fish's perspective!! Great story to reinforce that God made each of us for a reason, and that God can use each of us to accomplish his plan. Probably my favorite of Mr. Taylor's books due to the unique storyline and excellent illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Pudge Ate a Prophet.......2004-03-16

I enjoyed this book from the cover to the end. The illustrations were extremely colorful. The prospective of Pudge was one I had never thought of before this book. The fact that everyone is important... even a Big Fish. The good feelings that a child can take away from this story and feel that they are important to God and His work are great. I would recommend this everyday but also as a self esteem booster.

      1 out of 5 stars Poor Effort.......2005-02-16

I was half-way through the book, and very disappointed with the writing, when I flipped back and saw the disclaimer behind the title page, "This book is a work of fiction. Places, events and situations in this story are purely fictional . . . "
I was expecting a serious, new work, with perhaps a different look at this bloody battle. What we get is mix of facts gleaned from other, more serious works, and fiction that reads like junior high school writings.
I can only echo the previous reviewers disappointment. Spelling, grammar, and factual errors are very distracting, but even more serious is the lack of any story line. It's a boring, erroneous, disjointed and uninspired work.
      Definitely skip this one.

      1 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book.......2004-12-27

For God and Country purports to be a work of fiction. W.E.B Griffin, it is not. The story line is thinly scattered throughout a jumble of facts - some dramatically wrong. For example, a map of Betio has the island running essentially North-South instead of more East-West. The M-1 is characterised as prone to jamming and inaccurate when hot due to barrel heat which would have been a surprise to MacArthur and Patton who praised it highly. The book is one big chapter, disjointed with sentence structure that would make an English teacher blush. The spelling, punctuation and verbless incomplete sentences make it hard to read. This is definitely one to miss.

          Book Description

God's universe is so astonishing that we would be missing a great deal of life if we chose to ignore any part of His creation. Most of us are aware of the many animals that live in the forest and roam the land. A lot less of us are aware of God's animals that live beneath the sea. It is with this in mind that I decided to share my undersea experience with all of God's children.

It is my hope that this book can be used by Christian parents to interact with their children in a way that will expose God's undersea world and at the same time teach some Christian values that will have enduring ramifications.

By asking the questions on each page, we as parents can stimulate our children to think about "God" and "Christ" and His world. We can communicate with our children, and share some interesting life forms with them.

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Each picture within this book is an authentic sea animal. I took all of the pictures of these sea animals as they appeared in their natural environment.

Each picture represents an extended effort as a scuba diver and underwater photographer. Each animal was handled with loving care and was not removed from its environment. Look at each picture and use your imagination to stimulate your child's curiosity.

This book is intended to be used as a guide to stimulate your child's interest in His world and as a tool for you to listen to what your child has to say. Please read it to your child and use the information provided with each picture to answer you child's questions.

As you read this book, may you enjoy God's undersea world and remember you are loved by Him always and forever.

In his first book, Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos, New York Times science writer Dennis Overbye humanized the formidable intellects who have probed the inner workings of the universe. With Einstein in Love, he takes on the most formidable intellect of all--and the result does justice to a complicated man and his equally complicated work. Overbye's narrative concentrates on the years between 1896 (when the 17-year-old Einstein arrived in Zurich to study physics) and 1919 (when he used measurements of light deflection during a solar eclipse to support his new theory of relativity thus beginning a reign as the 20th century's most famous scientist). It's no accident this period begins with Einstein meeting fellow student Mileva Maric, who would become his first wife, and closes with his second marriage. "Physics was not all Einstein's life," writes Overbye. "He lived on Earth with a belly and a heart." Accordingly, Einstein in Love depicts a young man who liked to hike, play the violin, flirt, and tell dirty jokes. Albert and Mileva had a child before they were married (Michelle Zackheim's popular 1999 book, Einstein's Daughter, attempted to unravel the mystery of Lieserl's fate), and the young father was as careless of convention in his dress and grooming as in his scientific work. Indeed, although Overbye nicely captures Einstein's personality, the real excitement comes in those chapters delineating his thought. The book effortlessly incorporates a capsule history of physics from the Greeks to the Victorians, both laying out the issues with which Einstein grappled and suggesting just why his solutions were so revolutionary. Even those with little grounding in science will easily grasp why Einstein's ideas made such an impact, not just on fellow physicists, but on a populace that at the dawn of the 20th century was ready to accept the demise of all the old certainties. As usual, Overbye's work is a model of science writing for the general reader; it's also a perceptive biography highlighting Einstein's most creative years. --Wendy Smith

              Book Description

An acclaimed science writer's insightful and revelatory biography of young Einstein--teenager in love, draft dodger, bohemian, poet, and scientist--drawing upon many unpublished letters and years of research

During the first two decades of the twentieth century, the world stood on the verge of upheaval as all the familiar political, cultural, and scientific truths were challenged by new discoveries and philosophies. It was a period when young Albert Einstein was in love--with physics and the secret order of the universe; with his brilliant, tormented first wife, Mileva; and with a series of comely young women who were distractions from his gradually failing marriage. While that marriage worked, though, the Einsteins were a truly modern couple, a couple who had relativity and quantum mysticism as their pillow talk, a couple who were as often colleagues as they were fierce adversaries.

In Einstein in Love, Dennis Overbye presents this greatest of scientific romances in a vivid new light, telling the unforgettable story of the young man--a sly firebrand who left personal and professional chaos in his wake--who did the revolutionary work that changed the very way we view reality.

Einstein in Love separates the man Albert from the myth Einstein and restores humanity, individuality, and nuance to the most monolithic figure in the scientific pantheon.

In Einstein in Love, Dennis Overbye has written the first profile of the great scientist to focus exclusively on his early adulthood, when his major discoveries were made. It reveals Einstein to be very much a young man of his time-draft dodger, self-styled bohemian, poet, violinist, and cocky, charismatic genius who left personal and professional chaos in his wake. Drawing upon hundreds of unpublished letters and a decade of research, Einstein in Love is a penetrating portrait of the modern era's most influential thinker.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Einstein.......2006-12-16

In this book, Dennis Overbye contributes important history to the already crowded canon on Einstein. That is no easy feat, but as he deftly demonstrated in his brilliant book, "Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos," Overbye has an uncanny ability to research and illuminate the human side of scientists and, in doing so, show us not only the human contribution to cold science but also scientific achievement in spite of the human condition. Overbye also has a nifty ability to explain complicated science to the layman--in this case Newtonian, relativistic and quantum physics--and he succeeds here reasonably well.

What emerges is the portrait of a very handsome, sexy, playful, erudite, restless and headstrong physicist immersed in a world on the verge of two world wars and a revolution in our understanding of the physical universe. His passions in love were as strong and complicated as those he brought to both making sense of a world of physics beset by new empirical evidence at odds with traditional theory and a world of geopolitics being torn asunder.

Overbye is at his best when illuminating the science and the politics of science, so the life-long sturm and drang of Einstein's love and domestic life become almost-tedious distractions by the latter third of the book, but overall this very interesting book should keep you enthralled from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Albert: The Romantic Physicist.......2005-04-06

While separated from wife #1, Mileva, Albert wrote to her a completely one-sided contract of reconciliation (p 267). When she accepted his terms, he backed out because she didn't show proper appreciation for his "generous" offer. During this time, he was having an affair with Elsa (eventual 2nd wife), but this was muddied when he also fell in love with Elsa's daughter, Ilse. Being a little more wishy-washy in romance than he was in physics, he let the women work it out as to who he was going to marry! They decided on Elsa. Many years later, Elsa allowed him to carry on an affair twice a week with a certain woman as long as he remained chaste otherwise. As Albert wrote in a poem to a friend, "the upper half thinks and plans, but the lower half determines our fate."

Thanks to Overbye's superb research, we are presented with a history of Albert (as the author always calls him) directly from letters and documents mostly written by Einstein himself. Not by any means limited to his romantic life, we are treated to an in-depth discussion of how he worked his physics out. For example, far from isolated while a patent clerk in his miracle year of 1905, he was actively corresponding with several other physicists, editing scientific journals and conducting "think tanks" about theoretical physics with friends, including wife #1, Mileva. Most of his adult life, he conducted an active social life centered around these think tanks with revolving membership, sometimes involving entertaining others with his excellent violin playing, and frequently women. When he landed his first teaching job, he was unpleasantly surprised by the time and effort it took to compose a decent a comprehensible set of lectures. He toiled conscientiously over his talks, eventually becoming a sought after keynote speaker who would lecture two hours daily for several days at prestigious conventions about subjects involving aspects of relativity.

Overbye has written a brilliantly insightful book that brings into focus Albert's creative and unique approach to physics along with his sometimes "teen-ager in love" approach to romance. Scattered throughout the book are first hand looks at many famous scientists of the day, including other Nobel prize winners in their correspondence and first hand interactions with the charming Einstein. If I must criticize this book, it does seem to end rather abruptly, and covers the last 25 years of his life in very few pages. Perhaps another book is lurking in Overbye's mind for these years, for which there are undoubtedly volumes of more correspondence from the prolific Albert Einstein. A very enthusiastic 5 stars for this exhilarating read.

              5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2003-03-16

Dennnis Overbye has been blessed with a unique talent - the ability to translated complex scientific theory into language that the thinking reader can understand. In "Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos" we read about the theory and history of cosmology along with the personal travails of one scientist an the bitter infighting among all scientists. In this non-novel novel, we are immersed into the nascent world of relativity. From its theoretical origins [thinking outside the box] we are given a review of classical physics and the theories / illuminations of the greatest scientist of this age.

The scientific story advances within the framework of Einstein's personal life. It is rare that an individual can succeed in all areas of endeavor, be they love, work or play. One feels some disappointment with his personal travails and while he may appear cold or disloyal, many times great people sublimate their relationships to their passion.

Unlike other intellectuals whose personal lives were a total repudiation of the their professed ideology (Marx was an utter slackard, Hellman and Brecht were serial liars, Fuller switched positions with the wind, scolding the world when they began to ignore his newest mania), Einstein never tried to impose a social scheme on others. He loved quietly as one should and made his mistakes in private, again as one should. All in all, a successful work.

5 out of 5 stars A Romance of Many Dimensions.......2002-06-26

This book gave me a much more detailed and intimate look at Einstein's personal and intellectual life than anything else I've read, and it makes for a truly fascinating read. Overbye spent years poring through Einstein's letters and personal papers to research and write this book, and it shows.

There is a wealth of detail describing and chronicling Einstein's life as he struggled with the creation of the momentous scientific discoveries that were to make him famous, especially the long and difficult path to his final solution for the General Relativity problem. Along with this, you get a detailed look even into his personal day-to-day life, learning about his friends, scientific associates, and even his loves. Einstein is no longer a towering, remote intellect plumbing the depths and secrets of the universe in cloistered solitude; Overbye's account displays Einstein's very human side also, showing him to be a man of his times, often with Bohemian and avant-garde personal, social, and political ideas. For example, Overbye mentions how Einstein and his first wife, Mileva, had their first baby out of wedlock, and subsequently married. And the dark side of Einstein's personal life, the unhappy ending to his first marriage and his often careless dealings with the women in his life, don't escape Overbye's purview.

But don't be misled by the title, it's not just about Einstein's sometimes checkered love-life (although he did have more romantic dalliances than I would have expected); Overbye also does an excellent job of presenting Einstein's most important ideas, including a good explanation of the special and general theory of relativity.

And last but not least, Overbye is a fine writer whose prose flows and doesn't get in the way of the story, and who has a good command not only of the personal, but also the scientific side of Einstein's life. Altogether a well-written and fascinating book on a fascinating historical and scientific figure.

(P.S. Did anybody happen to notice the title of my review is the sub-title for Edwin Abbott's classic mathematical and social allegory, "Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions?" But it works equally well here as a segue into my review of Overbye's biography.)

4 out of 5 stars Engaging Account of the Man of the Century.......2001-07-17

The first comment that comes to mind about Einstein in Love is that Overbye can really write well; I find the prose to be much more enjoyable than that of any other Einstein book I am aware of. Overbye also does a good job of at least attempting to explain relativity to a lay reader, while also not ignoring the other important works of the young Einstein on Brownian motion, gravity, etc. I do find the title more than a little misleading, though - Einstein's marriages to Mileva and Elsa and his dalliances with others seem to have little connection at all with the progress of his scientific thought. I suspect that the title is little more than a device to capture attention and sell books. I also find it odd that the book just seems to end for no apparent reason around the time of his divorce from Mileva. Still, if you want a good read about a true genius and his early life and works, this is one of the better places to turn - just don't expect much "scientific romance," except for the beauty pouring out of Einstein's head.
