A Field Guide to Western Wildflowers.......2005-06-12
Personally, I think the Peterson Guides are far more helpful than the Audobon publications. As mentioned in other reviews, Peterson uses illustrations organized by color and flower configuration. The illustrations are very well done. Audobon uses photos. The idea is that you match your specimen to the photo it most closely matches and follow further identification from there. The books are complimetary and work well together; however, if you can only choose one-- get the Peterson book. Overall, I have had much better success keying out plants with Peterson and repeatedly have found the plant I am looking for overlooked in the Audobon text. The truth be known, I doubt I will ever buy a Audobon plant book again-- perhaps they are better with birds.
Pacific States Wildflowers........2001-06-22
I like the book and the topic, however the binding is is such bad shape that the book is useless in the field or for a more robust usage. Can this be fixed?
A Useful Tool.......2000-04-04
Though this title may be a little pricy, it is a must have for residents of California, Oregon, and Washington. At any rate, any family within which there is a flower collecter, should have a copy of this excellent resource. Though my family originally purchased this title because of a biology project assigned to my daughter, it has since opened up an interesting world of the natural plant life of this area and even those farther away.
Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers.......1999-07-06
I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. Beautiful photography and engaging text.......2006-11-05
I originally bought Melanie Choukas-Bradley's CITY OF TREES in its hardcover coffee-table edition and have followed its evolution since. As a Washingtonian of some thirty years' standing, I was originally unaware that this beautiful city was ever known as the City of Trees, but now that I've read Melanie's book, I've looked at the city through different eyes. Though the cherry blossoms are the best-known trees of the city, there's so much more, from the sights in every neighborhood through the rich diversity of our parks. DC is a beautiful city, and there's not nearly enough in print to show and share that beauty. Get this book.
A Field Guide Like No Other.......2000-01-03
This is a very readable and extensively researched look at the trees of Washington D.C. It's an excellent field guide for identifying trees, but the thing I like most about it is that it tells the fascinating stories behind so many of the trees planted in D.C. If you live near D.C. and have even a mild interest in its history, I strongly recommend this book!

Stunning and detailed guide book.......2007-08-31
This book has truly captured Washington States' wonderland of wildflowers and hiking guide.
It has detailed trail descriptions and gorgeous full-colour images, Gurche spotlights the states's 50 best day hikes for wildflower viewing. You don't have to be a studdly hiker to experience this kind of beauty, just be a nature lover and enjoy the beauty of Wash. State.
Favourite hikes for me:
Skyline Divide, Heliotrope Ridge, Railroad Grade, Sauk Mountain, Green Mountain, Windy Pass, Gold Rdge, Maple Pass, Noble Knob, Spray Park, Van Trump Park, Mazama Ridge, Naches Peak.
Very nicely done........2006-06-16
I can't add to much that hasn't been said in the other review only to reiterate that this is just and excellent reference book for anyone who loves wildflowers and lives or comes to Washington State. It is well organised and has great trails from many parts of the state to explore. I borrowed it from the library but I am definitely buying this one for my own collection now.
Excellent book........2005-07-11
There seems to be quite a dichotomy between hiking guides. Often the best guides are simple, colorless paperbacks that present all the info you need, but do little to stimulate your senses. Other guides are pretty and elegant with color photos, but are so at the expense of the information. This book has the best attributes of both.
Fifty hikes are covered in this book and span the entire state from the Okanagons and Blue Mountains to the Olympics. All the necessary info needed to hike is available. The maps are clear, although they do not show elevations. The wildflowers you are likely to see on each trip are detailed, although no mention is made of when they may be in flower (i.e., spring and summer bloomers are mixed, so it is not clear on when the best time to go is to see a particular species).
What really sets this book apart is the photography. Most hiking guides have photography that looks like it was done by an amateur ith a point-and-shoot camera, but not this one. While it is a very good hiking guide even without the photos, the photos are done done by a professional (the author) and are excellent. Heck, the guide is suitable as a coffee table book because of the photography.
My only real quibble is that because the hikes are spread out across the state, a large number of very good wildflower hikes are omitted (the author acknowledges as much). As such, the actual number of hikes that are within an easy driving distance is actually far less than 50. Of course, this is a problem with any state-wide guide that has this few hikes profiled.
It is still a very worthwhile guide to purchase and one which anyone would enjoy flipping through.
Book Description
The diverse coastal habitats of the spectacular Pacific Coast include sandy beaches and dunes, salt- and freshwater marshes, coastal prairies and bluffs, riparian woodlands, and coniferous forests. This guide, first published nearly forty years ago, has introduced thousands to the wildflowers and other plants that grow along the coastline. Now thoroughly updated and revised, it is the perfect field guide to pack for a day at the seashore anywhere in California or the Pacific Northwest.
* 268 species are described and illustrated by a new color photograph, a precise line drawing, or both
* Includes native and introduced species of wildflowers, common trees, and shrubs
* This new edition includes more plants, gives helpful hints for identifying species, and incorporates new taxonomic and distribution information
Book Description
From seashore to mountain peak, the wild, untended blossoms of Washington flourish throughout the growing season. This easy-to-use guide by the late Chess Lyons is loaded with brilliant color photographs and complete descriptions of nearly 500 species.

Save your money.......2006-07-10
Given that this is a small guide and that it tries to cover both sides of the Cascades, you can imagine how many common species are absent from this book. The photographs are pretty poor, and some of them are downright miserable. The plant descriptions are solid and some of the introductory material on Lewis and Clark is pretty good, but overall, spend a few more dollars to get a vastly superior Turner and Gustafson book.
Book Description
Our wildflowers are a burst of color! Using clear, crisp images Duane Sept has captured the essence of their colors and beauty on film. This photographic guide makes it easy to identify these wonders of the natural world. A total of 120 common species are featured in full color. With each wildflower species there is an easy to understand description as well as additional names and helpful notes such as edible plants, native plant use and similar species. Who would guess that some plants produce up to 300,000 seeds from one plant or that a few wildflowers only open their flowers on sunny days merely to close them around noon.
In addition there is helpful information about habitats, conservation, a wildflower checklist and much more. Wildflowers are certainly not dull and there is more to them than meets the eye.

Sidebars on flower habitat and color maps and photos illustrate each hike. Best Wildflower Hikes in Washington (State).......2004-06-17
I looked forward to getting this book; after all, I've been an avid freelance nature photographer and hiker in this area for many years and had yet to see a title like this. Alas, after buying and reviewing it, I was a bit disappointed. Although it is well-organized (characteristic of "Mountaineers Books" publications) and has a thorough appearance, the photography and image-print quality, some incomplete or inadequate descriptions of locations listed, and the absence of any real photography advice was not up to what I felt could have been better standards. It feels like the Mountaineers took references from their other books, added (35 of 50) chapters written by Karen Sykes, (an avid hiker-journalist writing trail articles for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper and possible source material for the core of the book), used some older general location photographs (taken by Spring) and repackaged it under a new title / approach with enhanced text. See for yourself - wouldn't you expect the photography to be representative of the best wildflower areas being hiked ? Not so here. Instead, there are some general hiking trail shots, or photos of small flower patches, individual flower subjects, even critter portraits. But for most of it, nothing that visually justifies many locations being listed as the "Best Wildflower Hikes". Examples of choices I particularly question are the Rialto Beach, Burroughs Mountain chapters (these are largely barren of wildflowers, yet are listed among "Best Wildflower Hikes"?! and their representative photography leaves alot to the imagination). And why not "Skyline Divide" at Mount Baker? I also know of wonderful wildflower areas in Mount Rainier National Park not identified, even in chapters for those areas! It is sad thing, because although the book justly credits (the late) Ira Spring's historical contributions to other Mountaineers books, this book does not itself justify its own title. Nevertheless, the book is a decent reference to have.
