      Book Description

The transition between a dream and reality is sometimes blurry and jagged--moments of panic, confusion, fear, joy, a trail of thoughts that carries emotions from one world to the next. This delicate, ever-shifting boundary between real and virtual environments is explored in Videodreams, the exhibition catalogue of recent video installations by Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham, Joan Jonas, Sharon Lockhart, and other artists whose work is represented through multiple video or installation photographs. Selected texts by leading theoreticians of cinema and cultural studies examine the archaeology of backstages and location sets in a thorough investigation of artificiality and illusion.

        Book Description

What do Mike Kelley and his cronies and sometime collaborators Jim Shaw, Paul McCarthy, and Tony Oursler talk about when they talk about art? You'll have to crack this book to find out, but expect a heady mix of pop culture, sex, violence, politics, and, as always, a strong dose of humor. This volume brings together for the first time Kelley's major interviews with those artists and others over the past 18 years. Kelley is naturally a provocative commentator on his own work and the work of others, but he's also an informed and serious student of his interviewees' oeuvres and asks questions that explore the soul of artistic imagination. Surrealism, the 60s, and institutional cowardice provide fodder for these fascinating conversations.

        Book Description

Space, time, love, violence, and the human body: these are but some of the themes explored in this provocative book of state-of-the-art video installations. Each a separate and carefully delineated environment created through multimedia technologies, the eight installations described and illustrated here were produced by an accomplished international group of artists: Judith Barry and Brad Miskell, New York; Stan Douglas, Vancouver; Teiji Furuhashi, Kyoto; Gary Hill, Seattle; Chris Marker, Paris; Marcel Odenbach, Cologne; Tony Oursler, New York; and Bill Viola, Long Beach, California. In the related exhibition, which ran at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1995, the viewer entered the space and became part of what he or she observed. Vivid, complex, and endlessly inventive, these works demonstrate the range and sophistication of an art form born in the last decades of the 20th century.

First of all, "Chip" Delaney was not the author of this book, although he did write a nifty introduction relating science fiction to performance art. Barbara London's essay and chapters on the eight artists in the NYMOMA show are outstanding! Anyone curious about performance art AND any serious student of this vital topic would do well to consult this book. Each chapter focuses on an artist in this field, showing beautiful color and black & white photos of performance pieces; also included are extensive chronologies of their past shows and selective bibliographies about their work. This book is a "must" for any serious artist and art library.

          Book Description

The intelligent irony that resonates through the best-known body of work of the American artist Tony Oursler, namely, his video and projection installations, results from the subtle combination of sound, language, and pop culture images that suffuse it. These elements are thoroughly explored in this monograph, the most extensive publication ever about Oursler and his work. His videos often employ the strangely projected human face to created bizarre contemporary icons and fragmented narratives that, while containing a humorous element, also speak to the dislocation caused by contemporary issues of sex, violence, and power. Tony Oursler includes 180 illustrations from his video, sculpture, and mixed-media works on paper, as well as an extensive selection of the artist's own writings. There are also two long conversations between Oursler and the artists Mike Kelley and Dan Graham, which testify to the long-lasting mutual appreciation and collaboration between them. This is a major new publication on the career of one of the most important American artists of the last two decades.

4 out of 5 stars Step into the bizarre.......2001-09-05

APPEARANCE is essentially a catalogue of an exhibition in Bologna in 2000, an indepth survey of the works of the "bizarrists" Mariko Mori, Yasumasa Morimura, Luigi Ontani, Andres Serrano, Tony Oursler, and Pierre & Giles. Each of these interesting artists begin with photography and transform their worlds via costume, settings, art history, and a heavy dollup of kitsch. The results are variably gratifying and self serving. But at least they are always interesting! The text is in both Italian and English and is informative while not probative. A good selection to add to your fine art photography library, but chances are it will decorate your coffee table more than your reading desk...........

          Book Description

Essays by Deborah Rothschild, Tony Oursler, Mike Kelley, Constance DeJong, Ian Berry, and Laura Heon. Interview by Elizabeth Janus. Foreword by Linda Shearer.

Introjection marks the first mid-career survey of the internationally recognized video artist Tony Oursler. Plumbing popular and punk culture for the twisted icons that structure our collective unconscious, Oursler creates fragmentary images and scenes that might belong to the hallucinations of a delinquent adolescent on a bad trip. The viewer is left to imagine what ungodly narrative was frozen in time to create such surreal, but somehow uncomfortably familiar, mayhem. Though darkly humorous, his work, known to most for his use of sculptural rag dolls onto which he projects the video image of a human face, delves deeply into the question of how the twinned forces of sex and violence, gender and power function in our culture. This catalogue traces the evolution of Oursler's career from early single channel videos through his current mixed-media installations and experiments in digital media. Combining sculpture, video, performance, and text, Oursler's work addresses complex contemporary issues with empathy, insight, and wit. Also included are four critical essays, two interviews, an essay by the artist as well as a comprehensive exhibition history and bibliography.

"Oursler's spectral characters exhibit the unidimensional persona of the crazed or possessed. Narcissistically fixated by the glare that animates them, they take on hallucinatory appearances reminiscent of phantoms, poltergeists, grotesques and ghouls, the archetypal protagonists not only of nightmares but of the modern genres of horror and their timeless predecessors, folk tales: all sanctioned collective repositories for the repressed and suppressed." Lynne Cooke, Parkett

          5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Survey of a Brilliant Mid-Career Artist.......2000-04-19

One of the most brilliant talents to utilize video (among other media), Tony Oursler is someone to pay attention to. This book, which accompanies a traveling exhibition that covers his work to date, makes a real contribution to the understanding of why he does what he does. It includes reviews written through the years by people who have followed him, as well as two in-depth interviews with this articulate, intelligent and thoughtful artist. Illustrations of everything from his earliest work to his drawings to stills from his video installations fill the book.

Oursler's work is not unlike a traffic accident: it can be horrifying, but it is so fascinating that one cannot look away. The work speaks to the anxiety of our age and the isolation we've created in our society.

This book is a big step to giving this artist the recognition he deserves. I highly recommend it.

            Book Description

In Madison Square Park in New York, and subsequently in Soho Square, the heart of London's media world, video artist Tony Oursler created a spectral audio-visual experience for an image-saturated society. Conceived as a kind of psycho-landscape, "The Influence Machine" delves deep into the history of media, rousing long-forgotten spirits and setting them to roam about both squares at night. The ghosts of the Fox Sisters, who made telegraphic contact with the spirit world in the mid-19th century, haunted alongside the ghost of television pioneer John Logie Baird. This book brings together Tony Oursler's most elaborate deep media projects in an illustrated time line, the "Timestream", and accompanying texts elaborate on the phantasmagorias of the late 18th century, its contemporary equivalents, and the influence of spiritualism within the general development of media.
