Book Description
From 1968 through the early 1970s, Three Dog Night was one of the most popular rock bands in the world. With his sweet, soulful sound, Chuck Negron guided the group through eighteen consecutive Top Twenty hits: three hit the #1 spot, including ``Joy to the World,'' and eleven broke into the Top Ten. But while Three Dog Night was hitting the high notes of critical and commercial success, Negron was sinking into the darkness of drug addiction. The singer's downward spiral continued for several years, and after the band's thirteenth album failed to go gold in 1975, they called it quits. For Negron, who was supporting a $2,000 a day drug habit, the descent was fast and long-lasting, encompassing two decades of horrendous drug abuse and terrifying near-death experiences. That he survived the ordeal at all is a miracle; that he today has a new foothold on life and devotes a great portion of his time to helping others avoid the pitfalls of drug abuse is an inspiration.Three Dog Nightmare graphically traces the life and times of Bronx-bred Chuck Negron, who used his talent on the basketball court to gain a college scholarship, and turned his gift for singing into an unforgettable career. For the first time, Negron tells his full story, hoping that it will teach others the life lessons he had to learn the hard way.

SHOULD BE READ BY EVERYONE.......2007-06-03
This book should be required reading for everyone. Whether your are an addict, recovering addict, family member or friend of an addict, or even none of the above you should read this. If not an addict this book will help you understand what these people go though, that most are really desperate to get out of this life style and just how hard it is to get out. If you are an addict it will let you know that no matter how far down you fall, if you want it bad enough there is always a way up, there is always hope, don't give up.
Best book I've read to date.......2007-04-15
A most read for all fans and any one in a band. I met Chuck a year after reading the book and had him sign it. What a nice guy.
Made for Movie.......2007-04-12
I was a huge Three Dog Night fan from the time they started to the end. This book is one of the best describing how rock stars live. I think it should be made into a movie it has it all, from comedy to horror. He told his story with humor at times. I couldn't put the book down, I finished it the day after I bought it. I applaud him for taking blame for his son being a junkie, if his wife had stopped taking drugs while pregnant the baby wouldn't of been a junkie, no matter how many times he shot up. Regardless of what a few here say, the man had a career within a career, his solos were the best of the three singers, and his harmonies with the other two were always on time, he had the right to brag, but I didn't see that he did. As for the egos he mentioned in the book, no band can have 3 front men and egos not flare. All in all it is a great book and it has a place on my bookshelf right along with my collection of Stephen King.
Tales of excess, justifications of fame, and a lack of introspection.......2007-04-11
Chuck Negron was one of the most important members of the biggest rock supergroup of the 1970's. Or so he'd like you to believe. In his addiction memoir, Negron spends time in every chapter justifying the importance of his contributions to Three Dog Night, producing evidence that they were the biggest selling group of the decade, and claiming that they invented stadium rock and other modern aspects of the genre. The mere fact that he devotes so much effort to proving his rock superstardom casts doubts on the veracity of his claims.
Throughout his tenure in the rock supergroup, Negron increasingly succumbed to the hold of alcohol and drugs, leading to great physical injury. He jeopardized his life not only with toxic substances, but by performing sick and injured under pressure from the group's management. However, the story of his downward spiral is surprisingly devoid of introspection or self-analysis. The drug scene seems to have just happened to Negron.
This is a book only for fans of the singer or of his former band, and even for fans, I'd imagine all the arguments about Negron's own fame and importance would get tiring. Anyone looking for an addiction memoir or reflections about the excesses of fame should look elsewhere. Anthony Kiedis's Scar Tissue and Motley Crue's The Dirt are both far more solid reflections on the lives of excess in the fast lane, while Caroline Knapp's Drinking: A Love Story is a leader in the addiction memoir genre.
Don't spend money to buy this book used at a cost over the original cover price. Any local library system should have copies available via inter-library loan.
Chuck Negron must be bionic!!.......2007-04-10
Just bought the book and read the whole thing. It's a real page turner. I was up around midnight reading the chapter May Company Misery which tells the story of him working at May Company (a department store still known to us in California). I was laughing so hard I woke half my family. All the reviews seem to miss the fact that this is a really funny book to read. Of course his life was a nightmare but he tells his story with the same charisma that made him so entertaining in the 70's. As for the current TDN group, saw them in the 80's and they were great. A few years ago saw them again and they looked tired and bored. Saw Chuck on the other hand and he was just as alive and entertaining as he was 30+ years ago. Going to see him again this summer in southern California. Buy the book!! It's a great and fun read. For all you strict AA'ers, lighten up. It's his story and his life. He told it like he told it. Get over it.
Book Description
"I lay there shaking like a Vegematic and sweating through the blankets. I prayed, "Please let me die or give me one minute of peace from this sickness." Then it happened. I knew then, and I still know now, that God did something for me that I could not do for myself. It was a gift. I was weak, alone, desperate, dying, and afraid. I surrendered. I prayed. He saved me. That's the only way I can explain what for me was the beginning of a miracle."
"Three Dog Nightmare" is the autobiography of Chuck Negron, and it is the story of one of the most successful rock groups ever, Three Dog Night. But unlike so many rock bios, this is much more than a self-indulgent paean to sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.
"Three Dog Nightmare" is a profoundly moral tale, an inspiring story of recovery and resurrection. But without a fall, there can be no resurrection. Few have fallen as hard, or as low. And even though we know the outcome, even though we know that he survived, Chuck Negron's is a story that seems at times almost too painful to read in its devastatingly sad portrayal of wasted talent, ruined chances, and burned lives.
"I shoved drugs into my system like a little kid eating candy. And in the end, it took away everything: my money, my fame, my wives, my children, and my self-respect. I traded a Mediterranean-style villa in the Hollywood Hills for a corner of an abandoned building where I slept on a filthy mattress I found in a vacant lot."
That he survived at all is a miracle; that he has his career back on track and a new life devoted to helping other drug abusers is an inspiration.

I learnt so much from this book, and felt myself getting angry because of her experiences. good on her for telling her story. L'Ohanna
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
An autobiographical account of Mary Crow Dog's life, this includes experiencing the events that happened at Wounded Knee, and her relationship with her husband, as well as the politics and experiences associated with the AIM political movement.
A look at the disturbing state and problems these people were facing at the time, very interesting.
Lakota Woman.......2007-08-23
An interesting look at the American Indian's struggles in the latter half of the 20th century. The perspective of Mary Crow Dog is helpful for those who have no similar life experiences to compare to it. Very good insight.
Excellent.......2006-11-10
The book came in perfect time and is in excellent condition. I have added it to my collection of Native American History
Powerful and compelling account of a woman on the reservation.......2006-07-28
This is a very powerful book about Mary Crow Dog's experiences growing up as a Lakota (Sioux) woman on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It should be required reading for anyone who feigns ignorance of the ways that Native Americans continue to be treated in the US today. Local whites, the state of South Dakota, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the rest of the power establishment have their inhumanity exposed.
Crow Dog writes in a very sparse style, and writes of brutal incidents in a matter-of-fact way. While this style makes the book compelling, it is also responsible for a major weakness of the book. Throughout the book, Crow Dog is never introspective. Things happen (she uses drugs, starts shoplifting, chooses men poorly) or happen to her (she is raped, among other things), but she doesn't think about why these things happen. She conveys neither a sense of her own agency in these events, or a sense of her own lack of agency.
Oddly for an autobiography, Mary Crow Dog is the object, not the subject, of this story. Even at Wounded Knee, she doesn't really understand why she is there, other than the fact that she has followed the male authority figures of the movement into the siege. She made her choice and put her body on the line but can't really explain why. How life on the reservation produces people like this is certainly worth reflection.
This siege at Wounded Knee provides the centerpiece of the book, and its natural climax. Crow Dog has a very different view of these events than the accounts provided by the leadership, who knew their history and knew what they were trying to do. Crow Dog also talks about the aftermath of the siege, and the period when her husband was in jail. At this time, she also followed him into the practice of Native American religion, and - - more implicitly than explicitly - - explains why this religion is attractive to many.
Finally, this book also provides a valuable insiders' perspective of the dysfunctional communities on Pine Ridge. It's interesting that the politically correct crowd condemns Ian Frazier's "On the Rez" while praising "Lakota Woman"- - both paint similar pictures of the same reservation. It's true than a Lakota insider brings perspectives not available to outsiders, but a white outsider also bring perspectives not available to insiders. Read them both and make up your own mind.

From the co-author of Lakota Woman, which has sold more than 150,000 paperback copies, comes a compelling account detailing the unique experiences and spiritual knowledge accumulated by four generations of powerful medicine men.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
The story of the Sioux leader Crow Dog. It also talks about his family and previous generations, as well as children. He has a co-writer to get all this down. This isn't too bad, and a reasonably interesting account if you are interested in that sort of history and such books as Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.
CROW DOG THE GREATNESS OF THE COYOTE.......2005-11-21
THE FIRST PART OF THE BOOK IS INCREDIBLE ENLIGHTNING GUIDANCE THROUGH THE RITES, CULTURE AND LIFE OF THE AUTHOR. THEN WE MOVE INTO RECENT HISTORY WITH THE CREATION OF AIM ITS STRUGGLE AND AMAZING VICTORIES; TO MOVE ON WITH PROSECUTION PERSECUTION TORTURE OF THE PEOPLE WHO FOUGHT AND DIE FOR THEIR CULTURE AND ARE STILL FIGHTING TODAY FOR THE RIGHT TO BE WHO THEY ARE. (RESPECT!)
WHEN CROW DOG DESCRIBE HIS JAIL TIME IT IS SO REALISTIC AND SENSITIVE YOU FEEL YOU ARE THERE INSIDE HIM AND THE WALLS, BUT WHEN YOU SHARE HIS FINAL FEAR: YOU ARE BREATHLESS ABOUT TO CHOKE!
ALL THIS HAD TO END UP IN A SUN DANCE.
A WONDERFUL BOOK WHICH SHOULD BE INTO EVERY LIBRARY, BOOKSTORES AND MOST DEFINETELY ON YOUR BOOK SHELVES.

Crow Dog Review.......2005-07-19
Interesting contemporary information (i.e. 1950s on). Tells of Indian's on-going plight in poverty, alcoholism, disease and lack of employment and the feelings this engenders in them. Valuable history of past Holy Men (and women) and their values.
Since I am very interested in Indian studies, both past and present, I enjoyed this book.
A rich book (17 year olds review).......2005-03-25
Crow Dog is one of the best Native American books I've ever read. It is culturally rich and speaks clearly on the injustices done to the Native Americans. It talks not only about the injustices of the past but also the future, like the siege of Wounded Knee. Also this is one of the richest stories which covers the legacy of the Crow Dogs.
One of the reasons this book is so affluent is its personal feel. The author, Leonard Crow Dog, can't write and so he spoke the entire book to an interpreter. This gives the entire book a slow but fluent feel which shadows the way many Native Americans talk, and so the book feels, sometimes, like a story. It makes you feel you are there in every event, and you are connected with the book in an uncanny way.
This book goes in-depth in the religious aspects of Native Americans. The Crow Dog family has always been in the root of Lakota medicine men, and they are responsible for the continued practice of, and the creation of some, Native American rituals. Leonard Crow Dog, the author, was the first to bring back the banded Ghost Dance since the death of his Great-Grand Father. It happened at one of the most important sites in Native American history, Wounded Knee. However, this wouldn't be the last time Leonard Crow Dog would become history at Wounded Knee.
The siege of Wounded Knee, which lasted seventy-two days, is one of the most intense events of the book. In that short time a band of Native Americans, from a rainbow of tribes, raised an independent nation, defended that nation, and fell to an enemy whom had, or maybe more has, no sense of a kept word. The siege of Wounded Knee wasn't actually a siege because the land was a part of a treaty which said it'd be Native American land, but naturally the white man didn't keep their word. It's been more than a decade since the last battle at Wounded Knee and it has been erased from most people's memory.
Crow Dog seems to be more than just a book about the legacy of the Crow Dog family. It seems to be a story about the prevailing struggle that Native American have every day to keep hold of their identity, and to keep hold of their sanity as they are encircled everyday by people how've stolen their home. The important part of the book is not the continued signing and break of agreements with Native Americans, but their spirit to stand resolved and stand with the divine father.
History in the real meaning.......2001-10-19
Leonard Crow Dog tells his family history and the history of his nation with a love and power which can almost overpowers the reader.

Manual of clinical procedures in the dog, cat & rabbit.......2007-10-14
This book was required by my teacher for class.
Their is a small section for rabbits. It includes restraint, and selected clinical procedures ( intravenous catheterization, bandaging the catheter for fluid adminstration, blood collection from jugular catheter, oral adminstration of liquid medication/tablet, intravenous injection, urine collection, & endotracheal tube intabation).
Most of the book is dedicated to the dog & cat. The sections include chapters on restraint, blood collection, injection techniques, placement and care of IV caths, oral adminstration of medications, dermatologic procedures, impression preparations, fine needle aspiration biopsy, ophthalmic procedures, ear care, pedicure, urethral catheterization, rectal exam, anal sac expression and cannulation, enema, skin prep., intubation, gastric lavage, dental prophylaxis, nasopharyngeal procedures, teansteacheal aspiration, centesis, peritoneal cath. & lavage, semen collection and insemination, vaginal exam and speciman collection, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, rapid evaluation of bleeding and clotting disorders. I only gave a 4 because the book has no actual photographs, just illustrations and they are black and white. I work with cats and I think some of the cat restraint techniques are way off. Otherwise the book is great!
GREAT TO VET.TECHNICIAN!!.......2000-08-04
I'm a freshman in veterinary medical college. And I go to my seniors' animal hospital every weekend for studying and assitanting them. Before I assitant them, I had to know about treating animals with the right way. Then my seniors gave this book to me. I think this book is very good for Vet.technician. This book is really detailed for every part of the way of treating pets. I am sure that this book will be helpful to you, veterinary technician or a student often doing assistance in hospital just like me. But i am sure it will not help any junior or senior studying veterinary medicine.
A worthy effort.......2000-06-05
This book reveals a good intent that fell slightly short. The authors evidently know their stuff very well and describe many procedures with meticulousness. However, necessary details are missing on ocassion, like where to locate the vessel they recommend to inject. The illustations are satisfactory but sometimes insufficient. One wonders whether photographs could have been better in these cases. I missed some procedures that are common in veterinary clinics today like x-rays and some small surgery techniques that are common in a clinical setting. For examaple, I would have liked to find some pointers on how to operate an x-ray machine. The book is very useful and well worth buying it, but the authors could make it even better if they surveyed the needs of their colleagues before attempting the next edition.
Manual of Clinical Procedures on the Dog, Cat and Rabbit.......1999-11-26
I am a director of a veterinary technology program and this is a required text. It outlines the "how-to-do" of procedures as simple as cephalic venipuncture to complicated procedures such as gastrotomy tube placement. The value of this book lies in the fact that it lists every supply or piece of equipment you will need to perform a procedure and then walks you through it step by step. The illustrations are awesome. This book would be a valuable reference for a practitioner or technician who wants to perform a procedure for the first time or needs a refresher on the procedure. The inclusion of rabbits to this edition is a welcome addition as it outlines procedures likely performed in practice.
Book Description
Crow Dog's Case is the first social history of American Indians' role in the making of American law. The book sheds new light on Native American struggles for sovereignty and justice in nineteenth century America. This "century of dishonor," a time when American Indians' lands were lost and their tribes reduced to reservations, provoked a wide variety of tribal responses. Some of the more successful responses were in the area of law, forcing the newly independent American legal order to create a unique place for Indian tribes in American law.
Customer Reviews:
The real story behind the case.......2002-04-11
Most people don't realize that until the Congressional response to the Supreme Court case Ex Parte Crow Dog, Indian tribal governments had full jurisdiction over all matters in their territory. In other words, there was no federal intrusion into crimes or civil matters arising on Indian lands. The decision in Crow Dog actually AFFIRMED tribal sovereignty, but because the Lakota jurisprudence of murder cases was so offensive to the white society, Congress passed the Major Crimes Act. Ever since, the federal government has intruded on the sovereignty of indigenous nations on this continent. Other Congressional acts have further eroded tribal sovereignty (such as the Indian Civil Rights Act) but it all started with Crow Dog. This book is a superb historical account of the real people behind the Crow Dog case, and also offers an excellent analysis of the motives behind those who advocated for the passage of the Major Crimes Act. Any true scholar of Federal Indian Law should read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Childhood Favorite.......2007-04-04
I remember having this book read to me and eventually reading it for myself when I got older. I loved the stories, especially The Fox and The Crow. I recommend it that all parents, present and future, have this book in their children's collection.
Book Description
This extensively illustrated volume collects the varied, powerful work of Meinrad Craighead, an artist whose images find their beginnings in her Catholic roots (she was a nun for fourteen years) as well as in the traditions of Southwest Native American Culture, in which she has immersed herself since moving to New Mexico twenty years ago.
Craighead has devoted her life to contemplation, prayer, and art. Her images are both figurative and abstract; she works in both black-and-white and color. Animals figure prominently in her work, as do dream figures and the artist herself in various manifestations. Oftentimes her images relate journeys she has taken, either on this earth or in waking or sleeping dreams. Many times, her paintings are accompanied by her own telling of these stories, and as a writer, Craighead has the ability to move us as deeply as her images do.
This retrospective conveys Craighead's enormous body of work over the past forty years. It is a tribute to an important visionary, a fine artist, and an inspiring life. Essays by Rosemary Davies, a writer who first met Craighead at Stanbrook Abbey; Virginia Beane Rutter, a Jungian analyst and the author of Embracing Persephone and Celebrating Girls; and Eugenia Parry, an art historian and the author of numerous books and essays about art and photography, discuss Meinrad Craighead's work with subtlety and insight.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating review of Craighead's work.......2006-11-10
This is a retrospective of Meinrad Craighead's art over her lifetime. The book is expensive but the color plates are gorgeous. While I did not find Davies', Rutter's or Parry's comments particularly edifying, I was very interested in what Craighead had to say about her work and life. There is also a chronology with photos of Craighead's life which I also enjoyed and found valuable in understanding her art. Anyone interested in goddess religion and/or shamanism will find this ex-nun's explorations riveting. This artist has a unique vision of the spiritual.
