Book Description
Huddie Ledbetter (1889-1949), known to millions of fans simply as Leadbelly, was arguably the most famous black singer in American history. His close musical associations included such towering figures as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and John and Alan Lomax. He helped lay the foundations for blues, modern folk music, and rock 'n' roll. This definitive biography draws on a wealth of new archival material, interviews, and previously unknown recordings to detail Leadbelly's proud, tumultuous, and often violent life.
Customer Reviews:
Could have used a better editor.......2007-07-30
There's some great information here, and the authors present the fruits of some painstaking research into Leadbelly's early life. We find out the true story behind his prison stints (and escapes) and releases. We also learn about a possible ultimate source for Goodnight Irene. The stories of Leadbelly's experiences with the Lomaxes are much more detailed and richly told because Lomax wrote many letters and kept an extensive record of his travels with Leadbelly.
But a more attentive editor could have helped a great deal. For example, two dates for Juneteenth are given. Bruno Hauptmann's name is misspelled. Some clunky phrases are repeated within a paragraph of one another. The chronology of Leadbelly's trips around the Northeast is muddled and hard to follow at times. The information is all there, and it is great to read all about it, but it could have been much more clearly presented.
Well Researched.......2005-06-20
After reading this book you will have a real sence of leadbelly, the man and his music.
A true original and free soul
excellent reconstruction of a rambling life.......2003-04-22
very well put together biography based on a variety of sources. the authors present the myths and the 'facts' in a very cogent and objective manner allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. not only is leadbelly explored in detail, but this book also contains great descriptions of the places, times and character of leadbelly's world.
this book is also a nice read for those interested in john or alan lomax.
i only wish there had been more photos - but those that survive are accessible on-line.
Definitive and Informative.......2001-08-16
This is a fascinating biography of one of this century's truly seminal artists, from his days in the Shreveport red light district to his jail terms in Huntsville and Angola, LA., on through his "discovery" by John and Alan Lomax. The book is exhaustively researched and will delight both blues fans and history buffs.
A must have for music researchers.......2000-08-06
This well-written, well-researched book is THE source for Huddie Ledbetter/Leadbelly information.

Book Description
Military families sometimes have to spend a lot of time apart from each other while serving their country, with one or more of the parents deployed. The separation can be just a few days in length or many months. This children's book helps the family explain to the child how things will work while the parent is away and how to communicate over the distance until the day the family reunites. The writing style and art of the book enables each child, boy or girl, to relate to the story in a personal sense. This book was computer designed with a cut out page at the end allowing the child to write a letter and draw a picture for the deployed parent.
Customer Reviews:
Poor quality book, also oriented toward Navy........2006-07-20
This is the first book I have EVER returned. I had hoped, despite the cover, that this book would be applicable to children with parents in any branch of the military. It is NOT. It's very strictly Navy oriented, with dad getting on a ship and working on a ship. Also, the book is very poor quality for the price and the pictures are poorly done computer graphics. Skip this and go for another book on the subject!
Book Description
“Our kitchen is small, the appliances dated. We don’t have a fancy six-burner stove or double wall oven like some of our wealthier neighbors. But as I remove the second pizza from the oven, the kitchen feels perfect: neither too big nor too small, neither too old nor too new. The kind of kitchen where my brother can enter carrying both my son and my daughter in his arms.”
–from Dinner with Dad
A beautiful, intelligent wife, two bright children, a gorgeous home in a nice Connecticut suburb, an ample income as a successful lawyer: by all accounts, Cameron Stracher is living the American dream. Problem is, thanks to a crazybusy work schedule, he’s never home to enjoy it. Most nights Cameron grabs dinner on the run, eating on the late train home long after his wife and kids have finished their meal.
So one day Cameron commits himself to a revolutionary experiment: For the next year, he’ll be home by six o’clock at least five days a week to sit down to a real family dinner–and he’ll even help cook that dinner himself. “Instead of stuffing a taco into my mouth in the back of the train, I will sauté chicken and peppers for my own fajitas. Instead of dining alone, I will dine with my family. Instead of Absent Dad, I will be Nourishing Dad.”
But as this daring adventure gets under way, it becomes clear that the road to culinary togetherness is no cakewalk. Six-year-old Lulu eats only plain pasta with salt and nine-year-old Simon clings immovably to hot dogs. What’s more, Cameron begins to feel that his normally sympathetic wife, Christine, is growing tired of having him underfoot at unexpected hours. Only the author’s faith in another American dream–family closeness at the dinner table–keeps him moving, and as he shops, chops, and cooks, he ponders the high percentage of Americans who’d rather work than be with their families, who’d rather take conference calls than meet the school bus.
Fired with love and humor, wit and heart, and peppered with engaging social and cultural history, Dinner with Dad is a four-star, five-course celebration of family life. Millions of overextended parents will relate to and relish Cameron’s journey as he discovers what truly matters most.
Advance praise for Dinner with Dad:
“Dinner with Dad is for every spouse who’s ever crashed on the rocks of the suburban dream and for every parent who’s had his heart broken by a child’s turned-up nose. Stracher writes with humor and honesty about the pitfalls and triumphs of trying to have your family and eat with them, too.”
–Julie Powell, author of Julie & Julia
“Busy fathers everywhere will immediately identify with this book, and hopefully will heed its message. Well done, Cameron–someone needed to write this book. Now dads everywhere need to read it.”
–Mike Greenberg, author of Why My Wife Thinks I’m an Idiot
“A warm-hearted, loving, and funny look at the way we live now. Can a dad get home for dinner, cook it, and live to tell the tale? Stracher’s story gives hope to the hungry and cheer to the overemployed.”
–Harlan Coben, author of The Woods
Customer Reviews:
Appetite for Life.......2007-10-08
I was intrigued by the title and sure it would be on my reading list before I ever checked reviews or sales rankings for Dinner with Dad by Cameron Stracher. A lawyer, professor and author in New York, Stracher tells the story of his hurried life, saying:
"As my salary increased, my appetite grew, until I needed every dollar I was making and lived from paycheck to paycheck. I was trapped in a cycle of my own making from which the chances of escape appeared dim. But I could stop the carousel if I wanted. I could get off."
The author is caught up like so many in chasing success and avoiding life but eventually promises to turn it all around. With his wife and two young children at home, he deeply desires to return not only to his family, but to his favorite pastime: cooking. The book is framed through the story of planning for, preparing and cooking dinner, and then sharing meals together at least five nights a week including weekends, for one year.
I thought he presented the experiment beautifully, even without possessing a basic appreciation for the Zen of cooking myself. I underlined several well-told lessons that I found intermittently woven throughout his story. He tells of the inescapable trade-off between family and work, later alluding to Eugene O'Kelly's Chasing Daylight (another one that I'd recommend), and speaking of the inability to control the future or the outcome of one's own dreams. He describes his role as father: "Who [my children] were what they would become, [was] a function of who and what I was and how I lived."
At times the book takes long stretches to describe the process of preparing meals with detailed descriptions and list of ingredients that I've never heard of, and also at times feels like grandstanding for his recent noble efforts, sometimes minimizing his wife's attempts to contribute to family meals, and making sure to describe the newfound admiration he receives from others. But if the reader shares Stracher's passion for cooking and his promise to be a better family man, then the book might be a most inspiring.
Here's the best excerpt for making the correlation between cooking and working:
"Unlike my jobs, which nourish my family in their own way, putting a plate before my children is direct, visible, and tangible. The results are immediate and clear. Working is abstract and conceptual, while cooking is concrete and corporeal. Work takes me away; cooking brings me home. The former is necessary but not sufficient, the latter essential and primordial. One is absence, the other presence. On his deathbed, no one has ever prayed for more work. Plenty have died from hunger, however."
Dinner with Dad: How I Found My Way Back to the Family Table.......2007-09-25
When I first heard of this book, the concept was not all that unusual. It was something I was familiar with, raising kids, putting together meals, what I did not expect was the candid honesty and humor that made this book a great read.It should be required reading for those of us who try to balance work and family and end up with less of each
Goodbye Workaholism! Hello .... family!.......2007-07-09
Workaholic attorney Cameron Stracher braves a mega-commute in the New York area to only wonder, "Is that all there is?" Determined to better his life and reconnect with his two kids and wife, he resolves to dial back his work devotion to fixing dinner for his family.
He finds this is almost as much of a challenge as practicing law. This first-person memoir is touching and absorbing as Stracher details the emotional and financial tradeoffs that bedevil us as we strive to find more balance in our lives.
A very good read!!!!
Great read! .......2007-07-06
Cameron Stracher's "Dinner with Dad: How I Found My Way Back to the Family Table" chronicled the author's attempt and journey to be a good dad by having dinner with his two kids. Cameron lives in Westport, Connecticut but works as a law professor in New York City and he typically spends two hours travelling to work each way everyday. In addition, he also works as legal counsel for an organization out in Kansas City. Needless to say, he hardly shares a meal with his family at dinnertime. One night, he made a decision to be at home for dinner during his kids's new school year and he would even cook at least half the time. This decision proved to be a lot harder especially since he had to leave work early and at the same time get his work done. Cooking at home proved to be even more of a challenge especially since his kids refused to eat most of what he cooked and they had developed weird eating habits. It became a personal challenge to Cameron to make sure his kids share his love for diverse and ethnic food.
This was a great read for me as it was fun and witty and the writing was very conversational. The author provided valuable insights into family life and how the simple of act of eating dinner with family made a difference. Many would be able to identify with Cameron's situation and how the pursue of wealth had replaced the importance of spending quality time with one's family. Highly recommended!

A cat has nine lives.......2002-05-29
They say a cat has nine lives, but Ursula Pawel, author of "My Child is Back", has had many more. As she takes you from her happy childhood in Germany to the labor camps, eventually the dreaded Auschwitz death camp and finally to the USA, you'll relive every human emotion with her. This inspiring book reflects the courage and character of a half-Jewish teenage girl, mature beyond her years, who in spite of the most horrific physical and emotional abuse, clings to her will to survive. With great resourcefulness and determination, she makes a 500 mile bike trip home after liberation and finds her mother. They, as the only two members of their family to survive, eventually come to the USA to start a new life.
This is a concise, "can't-put-down book" with maps and pictures. You finish the book with so much admiration for the author who in spite of her losses, kept her dignity, purpose and ability to love.
Rising Above Life's Challenges.......2002-05-17
I read Ursula Pawel's powerful book "My Child Is Back" with great interest. Her vivid description of her experiences in various concentration camps and her miraculous reunion with her mother had me spellbound. This gripping tale of human endurance was written by a woman who survived all the horrors of the Holocaust while keeping her strength and dignity intact.
Must reading.......2002-02-03
This book offers a fascinating glimpse of the Holocaust seen through the eyes of a young girl. It's not a dreary catalogue of horrifying events and torment. Instead, it gives a fresh, detailed account of how a family tried to stay together and how one very brave girl managed to survive in a terrible time.
The author's description of her narrow escapes and 500 mile journey after being liberated from the camps will keep you reading to the amazing and uplifting conclusion.
My Child is Back.......2002-01-31
Survive-definition-to continue to function or manage in spite of some adverse circumstance or hardship; to endure; to remain alive. This story is a heart-wrenching journey of survival in the truest sense of the word. The physical and mental toll of Ursula Pawel's experiences while "living" under Hitler's power is unimaginable, yet the spirit that she exhibits to stay alive remains undaunted. But what is even more amazing is that Ursula was only 16 years old, a young adult, when thrust into life altering circumstances that were beyond her control. I feel every teenager should read this biography and see if they would have the fortitude to take the actions, and make the decisions that this brave young woman did. I am so glad she survived to tell her story! A compelling and moving book.
My Child is Back.......2002-01-02
I finished the book "My Child Is Back" in two sittings. As the daughter of a Jewish father and a Christian mother, Ursula Pawel survived the Holocaust whereas her father and only brother died at Auschwitz. While reading the book, I journeyed with Ms. Pawel as she describes her idyllic childhood, her imprisonment in the concentration camps, her liberation and her eventual arrival in the United States with her mother to become an x-ray technician. She vividly recalls the smells, the senseless terror and the tragedy inside the labor camps. After her liberation, she provides a gripping description of a grueling five-hundred-mile bicycle trip to the pre-arranged town of Lippborg to rendezvous with her mother. As I followed the author through the book, I felt as though I were right there with her. Her courage in the face of despair and hopelessness is to be admired. It must have been painful for her to recall and relive all she endured. I felt elated at the conclusion of the story. The photographs, the family tree and the map of her travels were very helpful. This book is very good reading. I recommend it highly.

Book Description
Written first hand by an autistic individual, the book unravels mystique over how the author, Irving Chiang, overcame all odds in conquering the death keel to social acceptance.
Realising that he was different from other people when he was seventeen, he quickly slipped into depression. He was later diagnosed as having the Schizoid Personality Disorder.
His break came after accepting Christ in his mid-twenties. Five tough years of self-rationalisation was not without fruit; he identified his difficulty as part of the autistic spectrum disorder and appears to have uncovered the cause and cure of the disorder, at least sufficient for him to lead an ordinary life.
The current medical definitions of the disorder are limited in scope. They ignore a larger part of the population that have a broader autism phenotype with similar communicative and social disabilities but that are less severe in nature.
The author can be reached at irvingchiang@yahoo.com.sg should there be any queries or interest in the purchase of this book. The book is also available on most on-line retailers such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com
