More Great Work.......2003-04-14
Another great piece by author Mary Anne Cassata. I have been reading her Elton and Bernie Taupin stories for two decades in national music magazines, and she is considered a reliable source for her hard-to-get information. I especially enjoyed the rare photographs and interview material, as well as the lengthy chapter on Bernie. As an Elton fan, I delighted in this scrapbook and I flip through it often. It's a fun, easy read and it's informative as well. Bravo!
OUTSTANDING TRIBUE TO ELTON JOHN AND HIS FANS.......2003-03-24
I recently bought the Elton John Scrapbook by Mary Anne Cassata. I have been a loyal fan since the early Seventies and this book is everything a fan could ever want in one BIG scrapbook setting; loads of color pics (many rare), fascinating bits of information, extensive album reviews, memorabilia, trivia, concert highlights and even an extensive chapter on Bernie Taupin. The Elton John Scrapbook is absolutely a delightful and a respectable tribute to Elton and his fans (SEE the East End Lights, Fan Survey and Collecting Elton John chapters). Finally, an Elton John book that is not another rehash biography, but a celebration of the man, his music, his life and his fans. Bravo Miss Cassata!
The Elton John (S)crapbook!!!!.......2003-02-09
No, the title's not a spelling error. The two star rating was for the pictures, which were impressive, not the book! This book had the potential to be a great source of information for all Elton Fans, but just turned out to be a feast of second-hand facts, gathered from 'various sources'. There is not one piece of original information in here. eg. In a section called 'Fascinating facts' there is this; 'Elton filmed 2 television commercials for diet coke'. Now, people who buy books about Elton John want to know about him and his music, not things like that.
The worst things by far though are the careless errors. This book cannot have been proof read. Here is an excerpt from the 'Just the Sats and Facts section';
Sports; tennis and soccer. In 1971 Elton was the vice-president of the Watford Hornets. [Not the 'Watford Hornets'. The team is Watford. Its nickname is 'The Hornets'.]From 1976 to 1990 he owned the team and his cousin Roy Dwight was a national star.[Brace yourself, because I am not making this up. This is exactly how the book was written. Here goes...] In 1971 Elton became the vice-president of the Watford Hornets [!]. He owned the team from 1976-1990...
Now, maybe Mary-Anne Cassata finds this information exciting but is it really necessary to write it twice within the same paragraph? The punctuation is also terrible.
However many errors there are, though, the author deserves credit for the amount of effort that went in to this work. She obviously worked hard collecting information and pictures.
So, everybody out there thinking of buying this book, here are a few words of advice; STICK TO PHILIP NORMAN!!!!
Mixed Review: Good Book, Needs Corrections.......2003-01-30
Like David above, I also had a small hand in this one. I have mixed feelings about the first edition. It's a potpourri of Elton fandom--it gives one an overview of Elton's career while paying special attention to the 1990s. Too many books focus on Elton's hey day in the 1970s without paying attention to his rebirth in the 1990s stirred unparalleled excitement for his fans. This book does an admirable job of addressing today's Elton John.
The downside to this first edition is that it is riddled with mistakes and typos. Those fans frustrated by the mistakes and inaccuracies in MCA's first edition of the "To Be Continued..." box set will have a similar reaction to this book. That's unfortunate because several respected Elton experts were recruited to contribute to this book and it doesn't reflect their talents.
WAIT FOR THE NEXT EDITION BEFORE PURCHASING. Looking forward to a newer edition with corrections, so I can give it more stars. Until then, there are several other Elton pictorial books that are more worthy of your purchase.

An Insightful Look At The Career Of Elton John.......2003-01-22
"The Elton John Scrapbook" is an insightful look at the amazing career of Elton John. It spans 224 pages and has chapters on each decade of his career. It includes photos, scraps of what other entertainers think of him, a list of rare and highly collectable items, and detailed album reviews that are a plageurist's dream. This is must for any Elton John fan.
Book Description
The love story unfolds through Maars striking photographs of Picasso and their brilliant friends, most of them artists and writers; in his famous weeping woman portraits of her; and in Mary Ann Caws revealing text. The book is an enthralling revelation of the lives of a wholly exceptional circle of friends.

More than just an inspiration for the art of another .......2006-05-01
Dora Maar was according to most observers the woman in Picasso's life , closest to being at his own level of artistic perception and understanding. As this volume makes clear she was an outstanding photographer . The story of her relationship with Picasso, the part she played as inspiration and model for his work, her special role in regard to Guernica, her being the weeping woman of the famous painting, his abandoning her when he sensed ( or so he claimed) her impending madness, her passionate clinging to his memory, her breakdown, her turning to a reclusive life and one of deep religious devotion- are all presented in this excellent and clearly written volume.
There are also representations of much of her work, and of Picasso's in which she is subject.
Maar was clearly a considerable personality and artist in her own right, and not simply the inspiration for another.
Beautiful and insightful book........2003-04-11
This is a wonderful book, full of beautiful b/w images of dora, her photography/art and Picasso's work of her and more! It is really worth getting for your book collection, especially at this price, and it gives you an insight to Dora's life, I think she is fascinating woman living in a time when most photographer's were men. She is truely a pioneer and deserves more credit than being known as Picasso's muse. Very inspiring book.
Historical collections.......2003-03-05
Of some of Dora's photographs, and self portraits are a must have for any Dora fan. It shows her in her later years, it shows her paintings, it goes into detail about her love affair with Picasso as well. This is easily my favorite Dora book.
Dora mysterious, dramatic, definitely not only weeping.......2001-11-09
I would recommend this book to everybody. I am so delighted I purchased this book. It includes everything you need to know about Dora - her personal life before, during and after Picasso. I have always been interested in Picasso and by studying his life, I noticed all the fascinating women in his life. In my opinion, Dora was the one who made a big difference and who had a huge influence on him. Although it was Francoise Gilot, another woman in Picasso's life who gave him two children. Dora's own career and life as an artist (photographer, model, painter) is described in this book from the time she moved to Paris and tried to establish herself as a photographer.
You will not only find Picasso's portraits and drawings of Dora but Dora's own work (a lot of black & white photos taken by her that remind me of Man Ray's work). She truly was a talented artist. This is not often mentioned. Most of the people saw her mainly as Picasso's model and Muse. Dora was a very complex person full of emotions. She could be very dramatic in the way she looked and dressed. This all is revealed in this book. As I said, it has it all: Dora as a private person (Theodora M.) and Dora as an artist, the famous and remarkable Dora Maar. Trust me, with this book, you will get all the information you need. I consider this book a piece of art.
Insightful.......2001-01-08
Picasso's Weeping Woman: The Life and Art of Dora Maar
I am grateful for this book. It is insightful but not definitive. It is not an in depth biography of Dora Maar. A better perception of the psyche of Dora Maar is contained in James Lord's personal memoir "Picasso and Dora". And a better understanding of the cruelty of Picasso is presented in Arianna S. Huffington's "Picasso: Creator and Destroyer". Both I think are necessary to truly appreciate this book as I do.
Since Dora Maar's death in 1997, little has yet been published of her work. She is primarily known as one of the mistresses of Picasso but there was a world of complexity to this woman. She was deeply involved with the surrealists before she ever met Picasso. She knew them all, Breton, Tanguy, Man Ray, Hugnet, Crevel. She was a noted photographer, an exhibited painter, a poet and Picasso's muse and inspiration for seven stormy years culminating in a breakdown that left her a changed woman, a recluse and a religious devotee.
Mary Ann Caws book presents a dazzling panorama of works by both Dora Maar and Picasso including some wonderful comparative paintings of both artists. Dora Maar assisted and photographically chronicled Picasso as he created his masterpiece Guernica. That chronicle is beautifully presented in Caws book.
This book is an easy read with gorgeous reproductions of photographs, painting, sculpture, and poetry throughout not only from Dora Maar but also from Paul Eluard, André du Bouchet and others. It is a great visual companion piece to books on Picasso's works, photography and surrealism. It will occupy that regrettably tiny portion of my bookshelf devoted to Dora Maar. Thank you Mary Ann Caws for this delightful book
Book Description
With beauty, power, and remarkable wit, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith interweaves a bittersweet portrait of growing up among the working stiffs of 1950s Hartford, Connecticut, with the chilling progress of a serial pedophile who threatens to shatter her small town's innocence. In Girls of Tender Age, Smith lovingly evokes the jubilance and chaos of life in her extended French-Italian family and the challenges of living with her brother Tyler, an autistic at a time before anyone knew what that meant. Hanging over Smith's rough-and-tumble youth is the shadow of the approaching killer who forever alters the landscape of her childhood.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting.......2007-10-17
I had a hard time putting this book down. I was sorry when the book ended. Mary-Ann developed all the people in her book very well that you felt by reading it they were part of your own family..and if not family member someone that that you knew a lot about. I thought this book was very good on many levels. Thank you for writing such a powerful memoir. Barb :)
Good memoir.......2007-09-24
It's good, but it is rather slow. Most of the book consists of the author's family memoir. Very little is actually given to the murder. The biggest problem I had with it, is that the author's anger, at her mother, at the 50s, at the Catholic church, at the lack of services for autistic kids, at "the government," whatever, comes through loud and clear and continually. It's less like a book than like having your irate neighbor in to blow off steam at your kitchen table. Some people will probably like that about it. I felt that the author lost credibility there.
Easily the Best Book I've Read This Year.......2007-08-28
The author brings us back to what family life was like in a small American city in the early 50's- a time when most people didn't bother to lock their doors. She portrays the effects of a horrific crime on the community, her friends and family, and herself. This true story evokes a gamut of emotions from laughter to suspense to anger to deep sadness. I couldn't put it down.
As one who grew up in the same neighborhood, and whose destiny was subtly influenced by the events of the story, I found it especially compelling.
stellar.......2007-08-24
This is the best book I have ever read. I give it to all people I care about. She is a very gifted writer.
Shattered childhood.......2007-07-26
Growing up in the '50s, Mary-Ann Tirone understood that certain things were never discussed...especially with children.
But when her 11-year-old classmate Irene is brutally murdered, it rocks the entire community. At the time, the city of Hartford, CT was relatively safe, inhabited largely by poor immigrants, a place where doors were unlocked and children could walk freely by themselves. So who would imagine that a walk to the corner grocery store for potatoes could end so horribly for little Irene?
Forbidden to speak about Irene -- by both her teacher and her parents -- Mary-Ann supressed the period until college, when she was required to write an autobiography for a class. Her professor encouraged her to investigate the topic, as the adult Mary-Ann realized she didn't even know if Irene's killer had ever been caught.
Tirone Smith interweaves the story of Irene with the story of her own dysfunctional childhood, growing up with an autistic brother before any such term existed. All she knew, as a child, was that the family's world revolved around Tyler, and his demands were precise and odd -- no noise of any sort; nothing with the color red; reading every war book every written and acting the stories out. Every time Mary-Ann tried to speak to her parents about her own life, they would simply remind her that she should be glad she wasn't Tyler.
As a native of Connecticut, well familiar with the Hartford and Newington area Tirone Smith describes, I can imagine with even more clarity the events recalled, though they took place in a time long before mine. While Irene's death was indeed a tragedy, ignoring her life is something that no one should do...

Book Description
One of the few narratives of life in Atlanta during the Civil War.
Out of print for decades, Mercer University Press proudly revives this acclaimed real-life account of what the fictional Scarlett O'Hara saw. Life in Dixie During the War, first published in 1892, ranks among the best first-person accounts of the American Civil War. Mary A. H. Gay eloquently recounts her wartime experiences in Georgia and bears witness to the suffering and struggle, defeat and despair, triumph and hope that is human history.
Mary Gay was not only a chronicler, but an active participant in wartime activities; old veterans described her as unusually brave and fearless. While her book reads like a novel, it continues to be praised by modern scholars as an honest report of American history. James I. Robertson Jr. author of the acclaimed Stonewall Jackson: The Man, the Soldier, the Legend, says: Mary Gay's Life in Dixie During the War is one of the few authentic personal narratives we have of life in Atlanta during the Civil War.
Sam Cunningham, the founding editor and publisher of Confederate Veteran, reported that many books have been written on the subject of the Civil War, but we doubt if any of them are of deeper interest than Life in Dixie During the War. In 1898, the Veteran published this review:
While possessing all the charms of romance, it is a recital of facts concerning the war, which occurred in the heart of the Confederacy. Written in the first person, it has unusual vividness of style. The author's descriptions are truly remarkable. The reader seems to be living in those days and a witness to the scenes described. Historic facts are brought out regarding the siege of Atlanta which are perhaps found nowhere else. The author spared no pains in preparation of the work. Not the least of its merit is its pure English diction, with unsurpassed pathos in many of its pages. The heroism of men, the daring of boys, and the endurance of women are alike skillfully painted.
Customer Reviews:
Life in Dixie.......2001-12-28
This is a very well written account of Miss Gay's experiences living near Atlanta during the war, specifically 1864-1865. It is a very different account of the war in that it does not review battles or troop movements. It does give an insight into the common Southern attitudes concerning the North, slavery, the War and Sherman. If you "read between the lines", you gain an understanding of prevailing attitudes from many things she does not say. An example of this is her brother whom she writes extensively and very affectionately. What she never plainly states or even casually refers, is that he is a half-brother. Family is extremely important to her and the fact that she does not share the same father with her siblings has no bearing on her affection towards them. Miss Gay was in her mid-thirties during the war. This is an adult civilian perspective of the war between the States.
Historically Accurate.......1999-06-22
A very touching account of life, by a woman who lived in Atlanta, during the Civil War. The book is historically accurate, but it does reflect the Southern attitude of the period. A very good book for a serious student of Southern History. Not for everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Courage Beyond Imagination!.......2006-10-21
In this work by author Mary Ann Worsham we find a typical American girl who, like most of us, believes in her heart for the fairy-tale marriage and life, but this woman would have to face unimaginable events that should only be found in a horror movie and never be in a real person's life. As her story unfolds our author takes us through her life and the many abuses that she endured through the hands of those who violated her rights as a person and took advantage of her soul; and the worse kind of abuses from those she loved and trusted.
Mary Ann does not call herself a victim but a survivor and indeed she is. Overcoming workplace sexual harassment, physical abuse, accidents, acts of nature and attempted murder on her person, this woman has emerged as a strong beacon for those who are suffering some of the same to follow. A sobering read, but one I am sure that will help those that unfortunately follow in Mary Ann's footsteps as they too try to overcome the darkness that has shadowed their doors. I applaud our author and pray this book gets into the hands of those who need her strength and encouragement to help them also overcome and stand as yet another survivor.
Breaking the silence.......2006-10-14
Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views (9/06)
Domestic violence and crimes of passion happen every day in this country. Separation from a spouse is a trigger for domestic violence. According to "Scars of Silence" "...seventy-three percent of the emergency room visits by battered women occur after separation from a violent partner/husband. As much as ninety percent of the hostage taking in this country is domestic. As many as fifty percent of women killed by partners/husbands are murdered at or after separation."
Many of us are familiar with famous cases of women murdered by their spouses/partners such as Nicole Brown Simpson, Chandra Levy, and Laci Peterson. If only these women were here now to tell us what happened so that women in similar situations could learn from them. They cannot. But Mary Ann Worsham can. She miraculously lived through a severe beating that included twenty skull fractures from hammer blows and ten stab wounds to the face and head, during an attack by her estranged husband. Amazingly, she is alive and able to tell her story.
"Scars of Silence" is Mary Ann Worsham's story of triumph over adversity - not just the severe beating that left her with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, but everything from fires and earthquakes to workplace harassment and mental and verbal abuse. Even though she has been through so much, her faith in God and her upbeat attitude keep her going, and gave her the courage to write this book. By writing this book she is breaking the silence. A silence that is large because so many of the women in her situation did not live to tell their stories.
Mary Ann Worsham is not a great writer. She does not need to be. Her audience should not be looking for a great literary work, but rather a straightforward account of certain events in her life, as well as a resource guide to assist others who find themselves in the same situations. She speaks from the standpoint of a survivor, not an expert in any field. This is a fresh approach to what is essentially a self-help book.
"Scars of Silence" is one woman's brave attempt at breaking down the walls of domestic violence. As painful as the events must have been to recount, Mary Ann Worsham has taken it on as her personal mission to help others who are going through some of the same issues she has been through. She teaches us that one person can make a difference and that no one needs to suffer alone and in silence.

The Rules Are the Rules.......2006-03-23
The author, president of ProLife Across America and a member of the National Council for Adoption, could easily have written in the style of Bill Cosby or Erma Bombeck, but she did not. Her mission is not to entertain but to share her ideas about the Christian vocation of parenthood and how they played out with 13 children, seven of whom were adopted, and several of whom were disabled.
In a series of short chapters based on examples from the Kuharski family experience, the author offers practical and philosophical advice for maintaining a prayerful attitude and imparting solid Christian values to children from their earliest years through the teens and into adulthood.
In the chapter "The Rules Are the Rules," Kuharski shares more than 20 rules she and her husband developed for dealing with their teens and young adults. They address such issues as curfews, schoolwork, dating, telephone use, finances, safety, and family relationships.
In "Do I Get a Trophy? she shares her view that parental attendance at every event in which a child participates is neither helpful nor healthy. "Kids need to be free from undue pressure, and know it's not the end of the world if they fumble, fall or foul out. But when parents interrupt their working schedules to attend an event, it becomes more than a game, and the kids know it."
Woven throughout the book are the challenges this Minneapolis couple have faced over the years: how they responded to veiled criticism when they chose to adopt yet another child; their efforts to discern God's call, especially in terms of adding to the family; and the difficult decision to "let go" an adopted child who, despite patience and perseverance, became a threat to the family.

Book Description
Mary Ann Berry has given us a riveting story [that] transcends the everyday and reveals how one family has written its chapter in the fascinating story of America. William R. Gray
Retired writer, editor and publishing executive after 33 years at the National Geographic Society
Author of Legacy of the West Charley's Girl tells the tale of a scrappy farm girl in central Oregon fighting her only classmate in front of their one-room schoolhouseto a feisty octogenarian snowshoeing in Durango, Colorado. Along the way, Mary Alma Christy Sablich also recalls her more than fifty years spent in Chicago and its suburbs as worried wife, nervous mother, and grateful grandma. Charley's Girl offers a dual-perspective on the life that Mary Alma and her daughter (author Mary Ann Berry) share as Berry listens, records, and remembers, too. This country was built on the backs of regular folks like the Christy family who rose to the task with common sense, healthy humor, and simple dignity. It takes courage to live an ordinary life, and Charley's Girl provides one example that has worked for almost a century.

Eat The Whole Mint--Living With a Chronic Illness--Lyme Disease.......2006-05-10
WOW, I met Mary Ann at a Mother/Daughter Banquet last week 5/7/06 and after listening to her story, I just had to buy her book. I haven't been able to put it down ever since I started to read it.
Excellent book, so honest, makes you want to cry especially if you have/had a chronic illness yourself. I saw so much of myself in her story, but she has gotten victory over all of her symptoms, problems, etc.... A must read for anyone, anyone at all, with an illness that will not go away.
