Book Description
McKenna's second collection of in-depth interviews with some of the 20th century's most brilliant cultural icons. Kristine McKenna's work as a journalist began in the late-1970s, when she covered the Los Angeles punk scene for various domestic and international publications. During the '80s and '90s she wrote art, film and music criticism, and profiled directors, musicians and visual artists for a variety of publications including Artforum, Playboy, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and New York Rocker.
Talk to Her is McKenna's second collection (the first was 1999's Book of Changes) of favorite interviews culled from McKenna's files, and the book reveal's McKenna's highly intimate technique as an interviewer. That she manages to get such candor out of her subjects is remarkable.
The stunning list of interview subjects includes: Filmmaker Robert Altman; Jackie Onassis's cousin Edie Beale; punk rocker and poet Exene Cervenka; the musician Elvis Costello; surf guitar legend Dick Dale; the postmodern critic Jacques Derrida; Beat poet Allen Ginsberg; Television's Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine; art curator Walter Hopps; Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde; country music legend Rickie Lee Jones; the Sex Pistols' John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten); singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell; the Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man; punk rock legend Joey Ramone; New York rock legend Lou Reed; the actress Eva Marie Saint; and the recently-departed Joe Strummer of the Clash. Also included are brief oral histories of Andy Warhol and Orson Welles.
Talk to Her also includes portraits of each interview subject by some of the best cartoonists in the world, including Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, Phoebe Glockner, Tony Millionaire, Jeff Wong and others.
Customer Reviews:
A Fun, Important Book.......2005-09-09
A celebrity with the chance to be interviewed by Kristine McKenna is one mighty lucky celebrity indeed. Ms. McKenna refuses to delve into the tabloid gossip of their lives, focusing instead on drawing out their insights about the human condition. She wants these people to explain inspiration, fame, ambition, enchantment... and by reading her subjects well, and expertly pacing her lines of inquiry, she almost always succeeds. A magnificent achievement, given how jaded and suspicious most of her interviewees tend (at least initially) to be. Ms. McKenna is a far more accomplished and insightful interviewer than Fresh Air's Terry Gross, in my opinion.

Book Description
Silvie, the remarkable memoir of Silvia Grohs-Martin, is at once a celebration of the human spirit and a sobering reminder of the tragedies that can never be forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
Amazingly articulate life story.......2006-07-28
Just when you think it can't get more real or more intense, it does. This is not light reading, but if you really want to see inside the soul of real life survivor (not someone who can do 15 hours of shopping in a crowded mall,) this is for you. Silvie is my new best friend, putting all my petty problems into perspective and showing me again that we can be bigger than our environment!
Silvie's Personal Victory Against Hitler.......2000-10-18
SILVIE is more than a testament to the human spirit and its will to survive against all odds. It is more than the story of a beautiful and talented young woman on the brink of life and love, caught up in the unspeakable horror of Hitler's war against the Jews. Silvia Grohs-Martin, in her brilliantly absorbing autobiography, engages the reader's wide range of emotions; laughter, tears, chills, thrills, outrage, compassion and love, all within the context of a single chapter; at times, a single paragraph. A compelling read from start to finish, Ms. Grohs-Martin's acute sense of detail, her innate joie de vivre, and her delicious sense of humor combine to tell her true story of enormous courage, hope and, yes, romance against a background of modern history's most devastating and shameful period. Never self-indulgent or self-pitying, always taut and engrossing, SILVIE reads like a Steven Spielberg screenplay, complete with bigger-than-life heroine whose youthful exhuberance turns to heroic defiance in the face of her formidable enemy, one she cannot conquer on her own, but one she can survive. It was perhaps her youthful zest, her determination to live out a full, rich life that gave this enchanting young woman the strength and the ability to carry her through to personal victory, despite the treacherous traps she encountered at every turn. From her youth as an aspiring actress in Vienna to her years as an ingenue at Amsterdam's legendary Hollandsche Schouwburg (Dutch Theater,) to its transformation into a Nazi-controlled deportation center for the Jews, to her numerous encounters with Nazi officials, and her uncanny capacity to escape their clutches, SILVIE not only prevails, she soars. Ultimately, SILVIE's extraordinary account of survival teaches us all that although we may not always be able to control our external circumstances, we can always control our reaction to them. A completely exhilerating read! I love SILVIE -- the book and the woman!
A Powerful, Intimate, and Inspiring Journey.......2000-08-25
"Silvie" is a testament to the spirit and love for life that is possible and should be celebrated. Silvia Gros-Martin shares with her readers a most incredible example of such strength. With a beautiful, yet haunting, style we follow her back into the bleakest time in our world's history. But as we look through her eyes, we see the world that she loved, the life that she lived with such vigor and passion, and the people that impacted her life, from her childhood in Austria, to her beautiful theatre in Amsterdam, to the Nazi death camps that she survived. The good times and the violently hellish times she endured are depicted with such vivid clarity and honesty that I felt as if I were there with her, sharing her laughter and witnessing her bravery. Taking this journey with Silvie will give the reader a look at this dark period in our history which cannot be found in a textbook. At moments we are joyous, at moments we are horrified by the reality of man's ability to hate and perform unspeakable acts of violence. Silvie's memoir provides a memorable and enlightening journey. I believe it should be read by everyone, for her story will inspire us never to forget or repeat the horrors that she survived. And, it will indeed remind us of our potential to love and embrace life, no matter how uncertain or rigorous that journey may be.
The Persistance of Life.......2000-06-11
SILVI, by Silvia Grohs-Martin is a compelling, affecting and, at times, racking study of the persistance of life in a near void of humanity. Her four years during WWII in German concentation camps -- the longest at the infamous Auschwitz -- are presented not so much as appalling nightmares but as comparative portraits of the unbelievable tenacity of the human will to exist. Just when one feels overwhelmed with the vast array of Holocaust literature and media, SILVI belies the myth that we've "heard it all." The book reads almost like a spy thriller. A teenage girl, already a known singer and entertainer in Europe -- leaps from country to country, one step ahead of the invading Nazis. Surrounded in The Netherlands, with no hope of escape, Silvi finds work in the sole venue open to Jews under the Nazi occupation -- the celebrated Hollandsche Schouwburg Theatre in Amsterdam. While most Americans know of Anne Frank's ordeal at the time, the Schouwburg and it's role as the city's only permitted Jewish theatre/gathering place/art gallery/coffee house and even marriage facility, will come as a surprising revelation. The vast number of Jewish and non-Jewish citizens whose lives were affected by this venerable landmark of the arts is inestimable. When the Nazi's finally close the Theatre, Silvi and her fellow actors are forced to guard their former audience as citizens are hauled to the Theatre and held for deportation. Working secretly in the Dutch Resistance, Silvi is able to convey a number of Jewish children to safety in the countryside. Finally, as she is about to be deported herself, she escapes in a desperate attempt to reach Switzerland. Captured in Belgium she spends the next fours years as a "guest" of the Gestapo regime. Told with a keen narrator's skill of observation and attention to detail, SILVI is at times sad, humorous, appalling, enraging, unthinkable and always, always engrossing. You will not put it down!
Book Description
For the first time, TCJ devotes a volume to the most popular comics in the world: Manga.
The now-annual Comics Journal Special Edition focuses this time on the phenomenal Manga (Japanese comics) invasion. In 2003, North American bookstore sales of Manga surged to an unprecedented $100 millionor 75% of the entire sales of comics! Which means it's time for The Comics Journal, the foremost magazine of iconoclastic criticism, to take a hard look at Japanese cartoonists and translated manga, and separate the wheat from the chaff.
Our cover feature is Manga superstar Hideshi Hino, whose 30-year career and inimitable style have put him at the forefront of Japan's horror genre. 2004 promises to be the year of Hino here in the States with the publication of English translations of all his major books starting in March with The Red Snake and Bug Boy. Hino will discuss his life and work in an exclusive interview and he will provide the original front cover artwork.
Our Manga section will also include our fearsome critiques of the best and worst of the genre, as well as essential interviews with or profiles of the most notable Manga artists, including Yoshiharu Tsuge, Kan Takahama, and the undisputed king of Manga, the creator of Astro Boy, Adolf and Buddha amongst so many others, author Osamu Tezuka!
Meanwhile, Vaughn Bodé, the legendary and enduring underground cartoonist (and current inspiration of graffiti artists everywhere) is given the full treatment with an illuminating profile by Bob Levin (The Pirates & the Mouse), a critical essay by Donald Phelps (Reading the Funnies), a rare interview, and exclusive excerpts from his private diaries. From the archives, we've unearthed a 40,000-word biographical essay of Thomas Rowlandson, the great 18th/19th century illustrator, caricaturist, and cartoonist, written by Art Young in1938!
Also: Bill Blackbeard profiles the madcap cartoonist Milt Gross, considered by some to be the first graphic novelist (this essay is amply illustrated with samples form strips such as Count Screwloose of Tooloose and Otto bad Blotto). Tom Spurgeon profiles Rowland Emmett, the brilliant Punch artist (and editor), whose whimsical cartoons graced the magazine for over half a century and who is perhaps best known as for designing the 'inventions' of Caractacus Potts from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Finally, there's our renowned comics section whose theme this issue is "Seduction," and that will include an international array of some of the most accomplished and innovative artists in the world. 180 pp. illustrated, with color section, 12" x 12".
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-06-23
This special issue of the Comics Journal features great articles on some of the most important manga creators out there, including a few that probably fly under the radar of most people. Also included are some other manga related articles as well as some recommendations of some of the greatest books the medium has to offer. This whole section turned me onto a lot of great manga books, especially the work of Suehiro Maruo and Hideshi Hino who both have feature articles here.
The next section focuses on comic legend Vaughn Bode. There's three really great articles here that provide a wealth of information about Bode. Even longtime Bode fans will probably find plenty of things here that they didn't know. Of course this section also includes plenty of beautiful reproductions of his artwork and comics.
After this, there's a section about Milt Gross. I'll admit I haven't read this part as I'm not familiar with Gross' work (yet).
The book closes with a section of comics from many different cartoonists on the topic of seduction. A lot of great work here, and it's cool to see comics printed in full color at such a large size. The back cover features the most beautiful Tony Millionaire illustration I have ever seen.
Anyway, this is a great book. I'm always pulling this one off my shelf to reread some of the articles and the comics.
JUNK: TCJ doesn't care about manga.......2005-10-16
This is a pitifully obvious attempt to CASH in on the manga craze. The Comics Journal never covered manga until recently and mostly just scoffed at it. Now they have a huge book supposedly devoted to it. Yet the COMICS SECTION features a bunch of indy cartoonists and TCJ regulars who don't draw manga at all!!
With the exception of Tezuka the artists covered here are not terribly noteworthy in the scene as a whole and just further the feeling that they just slapped this book together to drain some wallets and ride the trend.
This is just another crass attempt to cash in by a snobby magazine that has traded its elitism in for pure greed.

Review of Print Collecting.......2007-03-18
This small book contains a great deal of data for the print collector. Very informative comprehensive view of print-making, from identification to cleaning and repair. Includes easy-to-understand printmaking terms and definations throughout the book. Excellent organization, with complete table of contents and index. Obviously written by a passionate collector and instructor.
Book a bit dated but still relevant.......2004-12-30
Although the artwork examples are dated, this book is a terrific resource for print collectors and those interested in preserving paper in general. Written in a very clear and logical approach, the chapters detail the history, lore, collecting, and conservation of prints in an easy to read fashion. What I enjoyed most is the "examples" section, made up of moderately priced (no Picasso lithos or Rembrandt etchings) contemporary prints, mostly from UK artists. This book is serious about printmaking and conservation.
There should really be a second edition of this book for the new millennium since there are new conservation methods and techniques for printmaking.

Book Description
The Buddha Cards offer insight and awareness into the ever-changing movement of energy. Through ancient Sanskrit text, this deck of 60 cards provides a deep connection across many lives to timeless wisdom and serenity.
Customer Reviews:
A true friend.......2001-06-30
Lin McNulty is not only a wise and thoughtful individual, Lin McNulty is genuine in her beliefs. She is sound in mind, body and spirit. Her writings clearly illustrate her heart as well as her soul. An author and a creator everyone should come to know.
BuddhaCards for daily meditation.......2001-05-25
The BuddhaCards are "a mindfulness tool for guidance, focus, and inspiration through ancient Sanskrit text." Each of the 60 cards has a picture of a buddha and a word such as joy, reality, salvation, obstacle, sameness, bliss, and so on in English and also translated into Sanskrit. Most mornings, I meditate briefly, draw a card at random from the deck, and meditate again, this time on the word on the card. Then I try to keep that thought in my mind for the rest of the day. I have tried meditating off and on for years and haven't been able to focus well. Not only do the BuddhaCards give me a thought to focus on, but each thought--simplicity, action, salvation, etc.--also helps me to put my life in perspective and to see what is good in my life.

Cute New Children's Book.......2004-11-12
Clovis Crawfish is getting ready for bed as the sun sets on the bayou, and the brothers Cigale-de-Bois begin warming up for their wonderful nightly concerto, when a lovely, yellow creature lands on Clovis' mud-house. Clovis quickly realizes that sleep will have to wait. The creature introduces herself as Silvie Sulphur - a member of the family of butterflies - and informs Clovis that she's looking for a home. Always looking to help, Clovis gathers a group of his friends to find a wonderful home for Silvie, but just as she's settling in, an unexpected storm sends everyone searching for cover. Clovis has no idea where Silvie has disappeared to, but with his quick-thinking, Silvie soon turns up safe and sound. However, now it's time to rebuild Clovis' mud home before the celebrations can begin.
I love animal stories, so the CLOVIS CRAWFISH series quickly captured my attention. Mary Alice Fontenot has done a lovely job of creating a book series for children that teaches them about wildlife, while at the same time teaches them French phrases. Add the fact that Julie Dupre Buckner's illustrations are absolutely adorable, and you've got yourself a winner. Overall, this is an adorable new children's book. Especially for those who live along the Louisiana Bayou.

Book Description
Charlotte was young and beautiful. Lionel, almost ten years older, was rich and her cousin. Theirs was an arranged betrothal joining two branches of Europe's most powerful banking firm. It seemed an unlikely love match, and even their wedding had to survive catastrophe. Yet their marriage lasted through tragedies and triumphs. Charlotte became one of the grand chatelaines of the Victorian era; Lionel, England's leading financier, persevered through years of bigotry to become the first of his faith to be seated in Parliament. In Charlotte and Lionel, acclaimed biographer Stanley Weintraub, using full access to the Rothschild family archives, tells the story of their stunning and surprising love for each other, opening a fascinating window into a memorable age.
Together, Charlotte and Lionel de Rothschild challenged and redefined their place in Victorian society. At her celebrated salons, England's leading politicians and policy makers met and shared opinions. Disraeli regularly argued politics with adversaries; Gladstone discussed religion with Charlotte; "Tom Thumb" (with P. T. Barnum) entertained; artists and writers and aristocrats mingled. Refusing to swear a Christian oath, Lionel was elected to Parliament half a dozen times before he could take his seat. After a decade-long battle, the House of Commons changed its rules, enabling Lionel and future Jewish or non-Christian members to serve.
Lionel (and, behind the scenes, Charlotte) influenced events worldwide, helping to fund relief to a starving Ireland, aiding persecuted Jews in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, brokering the purchase of the Suez Canal, and arranging for France's postwar reparations to Germany. Yet despite the distractions of their power, glamour, and wealth, and problems of health for which money could buy no solutions, they remained intensely devoted to each other and their family. Although Charlotte lost a daughter, then her beloved husband, and had to come back herself from severe illness, she remained unbroken.
Charlotte and Lionel presents the evocative tale of one of the least known yet most touching love stories from the glamorous decades of Victorian England.
