Book Description
In the summer of 1977, Terri Jentz and her Yale roommate took a cross-country bike trip. As they lay sleeping in the central Oregon desert, a man in a pickup truck deliberately ran over their tent and proceeded to attack them with an axe. The horrific crime was reported in newspapers across the country, but no one was ever arrested. Fifteen years later, Jentz returns to the small town where she was nearly murdered and makes an extraordinary discovery: the violence of that night is as present for the community as it is for her. Shockingly, many say they know who did it, and he is living freely in their midst.
Powerful, eloquent, and paced like the most riveting of thrillers, Strange Piece of Paradise is a startling profile of a psychopath, a sweeping reflection on violence and the myth of American individualism, and a moving record of Jentz's brave inner journey from violence to hope.

Almost worth its weight in gold.......2007-09-15
In 1977, Yale undergrad Terri Jentz and a school friend began bicycling across America, starting from the Oregon coast. Seven days into the trip, over the Cascades and into the desert, an axeman ran over their tent and nearly killed them both. How both women survived, in very different ways, is the core of "Strange Piece of Paradise", an epic-length personal journey and exploration of the criminal underside of a small Western town.
Jentz spends the first 200 pages of the paperback edition on her life story and the next 500 on her return to Oregon as she belatedly uncovers the would-be killer's identity. She spent most of the 1990s interviewing witnesses, law enforcement, private citizens, and finally, the alleged attacker's inner circle -- a parade of victimized women. Although she never directly confronts her attacker, he's memorably described (although his pseudonym in the book is not quite as evocative as his real name).
There's much political activism, too. Jentz presents herself as both liberal and tough on crime. I think it would be hard for anyone to disagree with her conclusions. She's particularly hard on the overloaded misdemeanor branch of American criminal justice. As this is where I began my legal career just after law school, I'm impressed by her points -- she figured this out a lot faster than I did!
Jentz's personal journey is just as moving. Even before the attack, her feelings about her traveling companion are well preserved on page. The women drift apart quickly after the attack; Jentz' quiet devestation is stunningly portrayed.
About the only complaint I can muster about the book is the same I had with Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place. For a book that tells such an important, personal story, it really could stand some editing. Jentz's repeated epiphanies and similes and metaphors pull away from the narrative and wear down the reader. Witness this typical aside, late in the game on page 613:
"Along with flying TV pictures and radio waves, something else that connected us was vibrating in the air, as though our minds had reached out in a field beyond ourselves, pulling us with invisible rubber bands toward those who shared our preoccupations."
Huh?
That said, "Strange Piece of Paradise" is exhaustive but not exhausting, full of wit and outrage, and will stay with you for a long, long time.
Excellent Book-.......2007-09-14
This has a neat story but its much more than that. Expecially the first half is an awesome display on writing. Her relationship with Shayna and her depiction of it was just incredible. I was very curious about the relationship and the falling out before the incident. I was also curious about one part of the book where she says that they confronted the attacker before the attack. I thought that maybe she came on to her friend and that why they were moving apart. I wondered the whole time about Terri's current relationship choices and if they had nay play in the book. It is one of the best pieces of literature that I've ever read because of its truthfulness from the author. I really enjoyed it.
Can't put it down!.......2007-08-23
This is one of those books that you just can't put down. Great read.
Excellent story telling...a fascinating read.......2007-08-15
I had heard the author interviewed on NPR and went out and bought the book. It was chilling in its recounting and an excellent read all the way around. She's to be commended for wanting justice and for being willing to face it all one more time. Her journey is the journey of anyone who's ever faced real trauma and tried to heal from it. It's a story of hope and tenacity and of believing that right will sometimes win.
This is a spellbinding book and quite worthy of a read.
Victimization in today's world.......2007-07-09
I could not put this book down. Terri Jentz covered so many topics so well that I consider it one of the best crime novels I have read.
Terri not only makes us feel empathy for her, but helps us to understand post-tramatic stress disorder, the legal system, women's abuse, how a crime can affect an entire community and how two people experiencing the same horror learn to deal with it in different ways. Well done, Terri.
Book Description
Warning: This is not your parents' nature writing! A distinctly contemporary take on the genre, A Leaky Tent Is a Piece of Paradise features original essays by twenty gifted writers, all thirty and under, whose strong and diverse voices redefine nature writing for the twenty- first century.
Editor Bonnie Tsui's cast of accomplished contributors wrestle with integrating nature into daily life while putting down roots-- often in urban environments. Included here are The New Yorker's Andrea Walker on learning to hunt with her father; noted fishing author and painter James Prosek on the mythology and mystery of eels; writer Hugh Ryan on being taught how to pitch a tent by a sixfoot drag queen at a Radical Faeries camp in Tennessee; poet Cecily Parks on reconciling her adventuress self with her fear of lightning; and African-American journalist Alex Kellogg on rethinking his ideas about race and identity on a visit to Kenya and Eritrea.
Theirs and the other writings in this collection illuminate questions about self and place, belonging and rootlessness, and the meeting of created and natural landscapes. Brimming with insight and humor, A Leaky Tent Is a Piece of Paradise rewards us with new perspectives on personal identity in relation to nature, and on the impact of landscape and place on our lives.

An ecological history of property in one of Wisconsin's most famous regions.......2006-03-03
Written by the assistant professor of history and environmental studies at Western Michigan University, A Thousand Pieces Of Paradise: Landscape And Property In The Kickapoo Valley is an ecological history of property in one of Wisconsin's most famous regions, the Kickapoo Valley. Monitoring the development of Kickapoo property uses and debates through history, from problems of soil erosion and conservation to the rise of local communities including Amish settlements, to modern changes such as the nearly (but not quite) completed La Farge dam, the negotiation process over the rights to deer hunting on the land, and the return of the Ho-Chunk. Extensively researched and carefully documented, A Thousand Pieces Of Paradise is thoroughly accessible to lay readers and scholars alike, and searches past history of Kickapoo Valley's rural ecosystems in hope of offering accurate future predictions of and solutions to future problems for Kickapoo Valley and other lands like it.

The author of four volumes of poetry, Molly Peacock proves she is equally adept at prose in this vividly graceful memoir. Some would say that Paradise, Piece by Piece is one more story of growing up in a dysfunctional family (alcoholic father, depressed mother, rebellious younger sister). Others would focus on Peacock's turbulent romantic life, while others still would place the emphasis on her decision to remain childless.
The truth of the matter is that all of these threads are vital components of a single, intricately woven tapestry, held together by Peacock's painstaking attention to detail. Anybody who has struggled to define his or her own life against the expectations and demands of others (be they society or one's own blood) will find inspiration in Molly Peacock's life.
Book Description
You can ask that a book tell a compelling story, that it dazzle you with virtuosic writing, that its emotional content be pure and stirring, that the issues it tackles be timely and relevant and put forth with the utmost clarity and candor and a tonic dose of humor. Once in a very rare while, all such expectations will be rewarded. And sometimes they will even be exceeded, as they are in Molly Peacock's eerie and darkly humorous adventures, Carl and Jesse investigate the forgotten years of her adult life, examine the choices they have both made, and tenderly attempt to rekindle their lost love. A story rich in wit and human understanding, Always Six O'Clock explores the power of remembered love and the chances of two star-crossed lovers realigning.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and compelling book.......2001-08-19
Encountering an uncorrected proof of this book at a local Friends of the Library book sale, the selling point for me was the author's statement that she began writing this book because she wanted to tell the story of why she decided not to have children.
Being a member of what feels like a definite minority -- men and women who have chosen to remain childfree -- I welcome the viewpoint of anyone who affirms this choice as a valid one. Too often, society inflicts a completely different viewpoint upon me.
People who don't know about the decision my husband and I have made, assume unthinkingly that we will have children at some point in our lives.
When people do find out about our choice, many of them tell us our lives are incomplete, that we are being selfish, that we don't really mean it. One woman, apparantly believing that our stated decision was a cover-up for inability, asked me if I am able to have children. A male gynecologist, not content to merely warn me that if I change my mind, I should have children before I turn 35, waxed poetic for several minutes about how choosing to have a child is an "affirmation of life."
Again and again, our choice is reacted to with extreme negativity and so, a book like Ms. Peacock's is a much-needed antidote.
Of course, her book is much more than a first-hand account of the decision to remain childfree. It is a poetic account of her life, of her development as a poet and as a woman.
This intimate and moving memoir is an outstanding work of literature. Yes, it holds special meaning for me because I am a kindred spirit -- another woman who has chosen to remain childfree -- but the book can also be enjoyed on other levels by people who have made a different decision. Ms. Peacock's story of her life is a tapestry with many threads, each of which has the potential to resonate with someone who has been there.
Strong - but could be better.......1999-07-29
A memoir themed around deciding not to have children, opening with the statement "When I was three, I decided not to have children." An incredibly bad father, a mother who needed a life (and mothering), a sister who became an alcoholic -- you get the picture. When she tells the story, the book is fascinating; when she natters on with her thoughts on children, love and life, it is tiresome.
A wonderful story of a woman's self-exploration........1998-12-05
Although I know she wouldn't remember me, I knew Molly indirectly at SUNY Binghamton. I bought the tape of this book out of curiosity so that I could pass the time driving up to Maine from New York. The story turned out to be spell-binding. Such an honest, touching, funny history of a woman's journey through an authentic life. Bravo Molly!!!
A wonder life story -- still unfolding.......1998-09-06
You will laugh, cry, and smile as you travel with Molly PeacocK to "Paradise, Piece by Piece" -- chapter by chapter.
A courageous and compelling book. The book is so much more than a book about Ms. Peacock's decision to live childfree. It is an invitation to experience the processes of one's life. The honesty of her story, will surprise you -- the journey well worth the time.
A poet too. That -- you will see as the words chosen to tell her story are full of expression and emotion. Ms. Peacock addresses with such simplicity the emotions we all feel when challenging the expections of our society, family, and friends. You don't have to be "childfree by choice" to enjoy this book.
I picked up this book by "chance" -- the title was interesting, the cover eye catching -- you'll want to pick it up by choice.

good reading for a lazy afternoon........1998-01-14
My wife gave me this to read because she had enjoyed it and, being former Californians, the geography was familiar. The characters were described in such a way that I felt that they were real...and as a Christian, I appreciated the theme and events without violent language. Beautifully presented and such a wonderful "wrap-up", no loose ends to look for. Author has such good projections on the theme, characters, and story. Hope to see more of the author's work appear on the market.... Dan Bailey, Indiana

Outstanding.......2007-07-29
I once heard that Lenin was a great admirer of Connolly, and having just finished Guerrilla Days In Ireland by Tom Barry I though it would be a good idea to learn a little more about the origins of the IRA by reading Connolly so I purchased this book. What I found was a writer far more accessible that the likes or Marx or Lenin who at times can be a little difficult to read for the layman. Connolly speaks the simple unadulterated truth and I have to agree with my fellow reviewer, Connolly has definitely removed a cloud of confusion in my mind on the conflict in Ireland.
On a personal note I am a former member of the Industrial Workers of the World, Connolly was also a member of the union and like any socialist worth his salt he was a union organizer, Connolly reiterated in my mind the importance of putting economic action before political action. Like any good student of Connolly I feel I must quote him...
"The enrollment of the workers in unions patterned closely after the structure of modern industries, and following the organic lines of industrial development, is par excellence, the swiftest, safest and most peaceful form of constructive work the socialist can engage in. It prepares within the framework of capitalist society the working forms of the Socialist Republic, and thus, while increasing the resisting power of the worker against present encroachments of the capitalist class, it familiarizes him with the idea that the union he is helping to build up is destined to supplant that class in the control of the industry in which he is employed.
The power of this idea to transform the dry detail work of trade union organization into the constructive work of revolutionary socialism and thus to make the unimaginative trade unionist a potent factor in the launching of a new system of society cannot be overestimated." (Socialism made easy)
This is one of those books where as I'm reading it I found myself tearing up little strips of paper book marking numerous pages to be reread and quoted, I find it easy now to understand why he is so influential.
A must for any student of modern Irish History........1998-08-03
I borrowed this book from a friend and had to obtain a copy for my own personal library.
The introduction is so moving that anyone interested in modern Irish History will not put it down.
Connolly's viewpoints on Socialism, Nationalism, and the Catholic Church lifted an enormous cloud of confusion I have had since my early schooldays in Belfast.

Book Description
Formerly, a library was viewed as a place for information storage and information was viewed as simply bits of data. Furthermore, many wielded information as a tool of power, in that those who had more information had more authority. It is becoming increasingly clear that shared collective knowledge of an organization is of far greater value than that of each individual's privately held data. In view of the librarian's changing profession, it has also become clear that they are now being charged with the mission to explore and implement new and innovative methods to encourage sharing and to better manage information.
The articles selected for this compendium are well thought-out and organized and are drawn from the fields of information and library science and business management. Since most special libraries are corporate libraries, the selections are taken from these different disciplines to provide perspectives from both a business standpoint and an information management one. The selections contain many different predictions about libraries and librarians of the future. They focus on new roles and highlight the importance of the profession. With the rapid growth of technology, end-users are being inundated with choices. They need expert advice from experienced practitioners. Currently, much of the literature focuses solely on the management of libraries as opposed to environment in which libraries operate. The purpose of this reader is to correct that.
James M. Matarazzo is Dean and Professor at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Prior to joining the Simmons faculty, he was Assistant Science Librarian, and later, Government Documents Librarian and Head of Technical Reports at the Libraries of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jim's research interests focus on three general issues: the closing of corporate libraries, how management values these libraries, and excellence in corporate library operations. He holds a B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boston College, and an M.S. degree from Simmons College, and a Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh.
Suzanne Connolly is a Manager with Ernst & Young's Center for Business Knowledge, a center devoted to the capture, synthesis and redeployment of knowledge resources. Her work focuses on creating business processes to support Ernst & Young's internal management infrastructure. Suzanne's research examines the changing role of the corporate library in American business and knowledge management within organizations. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, she worked for Fidelity Investments in Boston. Suzanne holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.

Intriguing and Multicultural Tales.......2003-11-09
A collection of Native American Indian folk tales include an amusing Cherokee folktale, "Why the Possum's Tail is Bare." This Why-tale explains how the possum went from having a beautiful tail of long hair, to a bare tail. The Rabbit in the story, who is jealous of the Possum's tail, puts the Cricket up to clipping off the hair on the Possum's tail. How does the Possum find out that his beautiful hair is gone, and what does he do when he finds out?
The book named after the Folktale, "Why the Possum's Tail is Bare," is full of various folktales from eight different Native American Indian Tribes. The folktales are short, with most of them under 2 pages. Although the stories are short and lack a heavy story line, I think they are more tailored to an older elementary reader.
The book is illustrated with simple, pen and ink drawings.
My favorite part of the folktales in this book is the extra information right before the tale. The information not only tells you the personality of the characters in the tale, but it gives you real information about nature and animals. For instance, before, "Why the Possum's Tail is Bare," the excerpt tells the reader that the rabbit is deceitful and cunning. It also tells the reader that the possum is the only North American marsupial. This information is interesting to the reader and helpful in building the characters of the story.
Why the Possum's Tale is Bare?.......2000-04-03
I am an 8th grade teacher and have used Why the Possum's Tale is Bare in my classroom for a number of years. It is a collection of folk tales from all over the country, native American, African American, etc. The tales are short, entertaining, and wonderful for reading when you have a few extra minutes at the end of a class. I highly recommend it to teachers or parents as a read aloud.

A Great book by a former labor organizer & revolutionary.......1999-12-19
Not too many in America recognize the name of James Connolly, but before the 1916 Uprising in Dublin he was a labor organizer here in America with the IWW. This book is a collection of writings that provide some insight into the political thought of the day. You must begin this journey with the understanding that the use of the language is a little different from now.
