Book Description

For the millions who know Judy Collins' unforgettable music, this remarkable memoir will come as no surprise. A moving account of growth and healing, memory and rebirth, dreams and meditations, this is Judy's heart statement, imbued with the introspection we love in her songs. From coping with every mother's greatest sorrow -- the loss of a child -- to the shock of seeing her companion of fifteen years nearly die, hers is a ballad of transformation in which some of life's worst tragedies lead to the discovery of a deeper love.

"Before I suffered a major catastrophe, I had no way of understanding the depth to which the soul is shaken, the exterior shattered, the interior made vulnerable and raw. Perhaps this is the way the wound works, to open us up so that we can feel and experience the depths, and having gone there, climb to heights we could never imagine...." It was the suicide of her son Clark in 1992 that signaled the slow dismantling of Judy's life, "the end of the world." But in its wake came a choice: to become another victim of the tragedy or to emerge victorious. Judy chose victory, freeing her heart to appreciate every precious moment of life, and see the gift of memory for the miracle it is.

With quiet grace and uncommon candor, Singing Lessons reveals some of those miracles -- Judy's memories of places, people, triumphs, and tragedies. From meeting Gloria Steinem and John F. Kennedy to dining with Bill and Hillary Clinton and spending an extraordinary night in the Lincoln bedroom; from recalling the lessons of her beloved music teacher of thirty-two years, Max Margulis, to reflecting on her marriage to Louis Nelson, lover and soulmate for twenty years; and from her fierce battles with her own demons to heartfelt remembrances of her son, Judy shares herself, in the sweet, clear voice that is as true as her music, with the insight her fans have come to know from her lyrics.

More than an intimate memoir, Singing Lessons is the triumph of a keenly observant, brilliantly gifted artist -- a deeply affecting and eloquently written journal of a woman determined to keep her heart open, her spirit intact, and all the elements of her life in harmony. It is the heart and soul of Judy Collins.

5 out of 5 stars Touching memoir.......2002-04-28

Read SINGING LESSONS by Judy Collins . . . this is a very
touching memoir of her life, her son's suicide and companion's
serious illness, and how she managed to survive these
events.

Judy Collins has always been one of my favorite performers . . . I also enjoyed reading about how her career evolved, as well as how she played with such other favorites of mine as Tom Paxton, Leonard Cohen, Joni, Mitchell, and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Best of all, the book came with a four-song CD (much to my
surprise) . . . what a treat to be reading her words at the
same time I was listening to her sing!

There were many memorable passages; ...P>[Andrew Weil confirms what I have learned through trial and
error about depression.] "The best single treatment (for
depression) is vigorous, regular aerobic exercise, at least
thirty minutes a day, five days a week." Most of the time, after I spend a half hour or more exercising, any cloud of depression lifts so completely that I feel a small miracle has been accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars What really matters at the end.......2001-11-23

The writting style is stunnigly beautiful and impressive, just as authour's music always had a certain healing power. Many singers/actors are not capable to remember anything more than their LP's and awards - celebrities memoirs are too often simply boasting about their career - but Collins have a perfect ballanced view on her past and she writtes about her inner life much more than her career, which is mentioned basically briefly. Portraits of her father and mentor Anthonia are described with affection and of course the book never stops reflecting on her son. This is a clear picture of Judy Collins life from her point of view - no celebrity gossip,no recording dates, what really matters here are feelings and precious memories she shares with reader. At times I thought her story about son sounds a bit obsessive - until it made me realise that I think about my mother every day and she died 12 years ago,so I guess we never really let go.Not only that second half of the book brings very helpful observations how to cope with depression,Collins also have sharp witt and she saved certain original sense of humour which must be life-saving quality (on her knees in the bathroom of the White House, she laughs at herself),the whole book is a warm, affectionate celebration of spirit still shining bright after tragedy and life downfalls.

5 out of 5 stars "A book of rare honesty, sensitivity, and warmth!".......1999-11-12

While listening to the current recordings of this remarkable performer, humanitarian, and personality, one is immediately struck by the warmth of her voice and its enduring stamina and honesty, the same can be said about, "Singing Lessons, A Memoir of Love, Loss, Hope, and Healing. If anyone wonders if it is possible to survive unbearable tragedy, and thrive, they only have to read this book. If anyone wonders about physical, spiritual, and emmotional vibrancy, beyond the age of 40, they have only to read this book! It has been said that to survive any great tragedy, you have to go through it and experience it honestly. For those of us who have gone through far less than the loss of an only child, this book is a triumphant road-map on how to grow and survive any of lifes unfathomable, unexpected, and unreal experiences. Judy Collins is a shinning example, not only for those trying to cope with an enormous tragedy, but many of the new comers in todays music and entertainment industry who could well learn a "lesson" from her tremendous example on how to be a "good" star, someone who is truly grateful for the position they have achieved, and seeks to give back to the world, a true sense of caring, a steady sense of responsibility, and most of all, an enduring sense of the "real" kind of love, that makes this book "sing," and the journey possible and worth the effort to continue.

      Book Description

In this international bestseller, a child finds the light within his heart and his common link with all of life.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Integrated Spirituality for Children.......2007-09-12

This is unquestionably the most accessible and beautiful book about the interconnected web of existence I have ever found. I used it as the children's sermon at the UU Church where I sometimes preach, and the response was incredible. People came up to me afterwards raving about how it simply and movingly it expressed the most complex spiritual concept that is at the heart of the faith.
It is, perhaps, particularly valuable at a time when physicists are sounding more and more like mystics; Neil DeGrasse Tyson has said that we are part of the universe and the universe is part of us and that should make us feel large, not insignificant. That key truth is the crux of "All I See is Part of Me."
Chara Curtis's poetic story begins with a small child of indeterminate gender (some children see a girl, some a boy and that is part of the charm) sitting on a hilltop and observing the world, solipsistically sensing that it was all somehow connected to her (or him). That feeling is confirmed by conversations with the various elements of the world: Brother Sun and Sister Star. These encourage the child to look inside to find the connection with the Universe, manifesting as a light (energy).
"All the plants, the animals and trees
Are in your light, and you are these."
In that light, the child finds all the answers to any question that can be asked, and touches, in a profound way, eternity.
This simply stated story is not the only star of the book however. Cynthia Aldrich's amazing pastel illustrations more than support the theme of the book. Their softness and luminosity are awe inspiring, a perfect compliment to the poetry. The bright colors and incredible use of light enthrall young children.
This is a kind of spirituality for the 21st Century when science and faith are coming closer to each other than they ever have. It is non-sectarian; quite the opposite. It is an expression, on a level even a child can understand, of the Spirit that moves the Universe and is accessible in the smallest blade of grass.
"I said a prayer I know was heard,
`Cause all I am hears every word."
      Amen.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginning book .......2007-08-30

Carl Sagan wrote, "We are all stardust." While this wonderful book doesn't run that deep for the children, the message that all things are connected and intertwined is beautifully illustrated in _All I See Is Part of Me_. The story is short - maybe 120 words - which will keep the attention of the smallest of children; the artwork is bright and vibrant, almost luminescent. Highly recommended for younger children ages 1 - 4.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book for children!.......2007-05-07

I bought this book for my granddaughters and recorded it for them so that they could listen to it as they fall asleep. They have loved it.

      4 out of 5 stars Non-Dualism for Kids.......2007-01-07

This is a fabulous introduction to non-dualism (providing that you scratch out several lines, starting with "So you know everything, don't you see?", where Ms. Curtis gets a little carried away). Though clearly written for kids, reading it as an adult reminds one that the most profound truths are simple in concept though difficult in realization. For those willing to see a common thread in all religions, it reminds one of Jesus' instruction to become like a child.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2006-12-23

This is a reminder that we are all connected. Everything is part of one. The Sun, the Moon, our inner voice, our friends, out "things". Everything there is and everywhere we can go is all part of one, therefore "All I see is Part of Me".

This is a great story for those with soft hearts, especially kids. Being connected helps us remember to be kind and spread love and happiness as much as we can remember to do.

The illustrations are clear and easy to see. The text is easy to follow and our kids enjoy the story at bedtime and daytime alike.

      Book Description

The most advanced and celebrated mind of the 20th Century, without a doubt, is attributed to Albert Einstein. Instead of his hard science and advanced mathematical theories, which often go far beyond the minds of average people, this book allows us to meet him as a person. This interesting book allows us to explore his beliefs, philosophical ideas, and opinions on many subjects so we can walk away afterwards knowing and understanding one of the world's greatest intellectual giants. Subjects include politics, religion, education, the meaning of life, Jewish issues, the world economy, peace and pacifism. One does not need an advanced degree in math or physics to appreciate the genius of Einstein, shared so clearly by the man himself in this book.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Enlightning.......2007-05-09

The book could have been structured a little better, but noone can argue with the words of Einstein. Several of the quotes in the book are about random and old-time topics that were lost on me, only being 23. However, this is still an amazing glipse into the man that changed the 20th Centery.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Scientist and Great Humanitarian.......2006-06-06

Albert Einstein as I see it was one of the greatest humanitarians that ever lived. His brilliance and simplicity of thought shines through on many of his complex theories. You come away saying "Why didn't I think of that? It is so simple!" Einstein's humor is dazzling to match and rounds out my perception of this wonderful unique human being. I enjoyed this book.

2 out of 5 stars There is a more comprehensive and cheaper book out there!!!.......2006-05-18

      +++++

This book (first published in 1934) contains brief writings of physicist Albert Einstein (1879 to 1955), one of the most creative intellects of the twentieth century. It contains articles (speeches, letters, statements, etc.) from early in his career.

This book gives a personal portrait of the man behind the scientific legend.

The book itself is divided into four parts:

      (1) The world as I see it (about 30 articles). This is my favorite part.
      (2) Politics and pacifism (almost 20 articles). Einstein was a pacifist (one who opposes the use of force under any circumstances).
      (3) Germany (3 articles). Einstein was born in Ulm, Wurttemberg, Germany. (He later emigrated to the United States in late 1932.)
      (4) The Jews (just over 10 articles). Einstein was Jewish.

Finally, if this book is so good, then why did I give it the rating I did? Two reasons.

First, there is a much more comprehensive book that also has gathered Einstein's writings. It is called "Ideas and Opinions" (first published in 1954 and sold by Amazon). It contains almost all the articles (it excludes seven) contained in "The World as I See It." As well, it contains selected articles from other publications (most notably the books "Out of my Later Years" and "Mein Weltbild.")

As well, the book "Ideas and Opinions" has a fifth part called `Contributions to Science' (which contains almost 20 articles). Here, Einstein discusses topics such as relativity, theoretical physics, science, and gravitation. He even gives tributes to such people as Isaac Newton and Copernicus.

Second, this book's price. It costs $9.20 and you get 65 articles. But the hardcopy version of "Ideas and Opinions" costs about $6.00 and you get 120 articles (almost double the amount)!! (Note that all prices quoted are as of May 2006.)

In conclusion, instead of this book, I recommend the more comprehensive and cheaper book called "Ideas and Opinions." In my opinion, this recommended book is the definitive collection if Albert Einstein's popular writings!!!

      +++++

      5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2006-02-26

I found this book in my uncle's library. After hearing some islamist authors were interpreting Einstein's book as a proof of "science without religion is not science etc" I have decided to read this book . Then I realized those writers never really read this book and they were talking non sense it was just a sentence from this book.
The book is nice, he is not only a scientist also a philosoph. It helped me to look at some of the things with a different point of view.

5 out of 5 stars The world as Einstein sees it .......2005-06-26

This volume consists of writings of Einstein collected in the year 1932. Another Amazon reviewer has pointed out that it omits Einstein's writings on science which he rightfully says is something like speaking about Mozart without speaking about his music.
Yet Einstein was already by 1932 a world - figure. And one of the great tests of his life, and proofs of his being , beside a great genius, a very decent and moral human being , was the way he reacted to the Nazis. When they were beginning their racist attacks on the Jews, Einstein proudly announced his Jewish origin. Instead of trying to play up to authority as did for instance Heidegger he showed an ability to sacrifice his own private position within Germany , then the great center of scientific research.
This volume contains a chapter on his relation to the Germany of the time. It also contains a more extensive chapter on his relation to the Jews, to the building of a homeland , to the conception of peace between Jew and Arab in the Holy Land.
The volume opens with Einstein's reflections on the meaning of life, and on the way he sees the world. They come , I think, very much out of his own sense of himself. Einstein highly prized the private individual. He believed that the individual did not exist to be absorbed in or be a slave to the State, but rather the State existed in order to enable individuals to pursue their lives and creative endeavors. In this work he champions the political system of the United States because he believes it best enables individuals to find their way to real creative and productive human endeavor.
He says,"The real valuable thing in the pageant of human life seems to me not the State, but the creative, sentient, individual , the personality: it alone creates the noble and sublime."
Einstein in his humble away talks about the dependence of the individual, of himself on the contributions of so many others in society.
And he talks about the fundamental values for which he has lived, Truth, Goodness and Beauty.
When one thinks of the other outsized giant of science, Newton and compares Einstein with him, one is again struck at how remarkable it is that a person of Einstein's incredible genius in scientific work, should also have been in so many ways a decent, sane, moral human being.
Mankind is enriched by his being one of us.

When I was 18, I had the pleasure of both reading this book and meeting the author who was a professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennnsylvania. It's the only book I've re-read five times. Russell, a graduate of Yale and Oxford, writes with humor and humanity in lean prose. His story is more than an inspiration; the author shows the reader how to live without allowing disability to interfere. Also highly recommended by Russell: The Island, the story of Russell and his family's adventures living on an island in the St. Lawrence

5 out of 5 stars Rates with "A Seperate Peace" and "The Catcher In The Rye".......1997-07-21

This book was one of the most inspiring books of my youth. I would recommend it highly. It is the autobigraphical look at a man blinded in his youth. I recall it as brutally honest, with Mr. Russel giving an open and often times humorous assesment of life after sight. I only wish I could locate a copy to re-read it as an adult

          Book Description

          Sylvia Browne’s Book of Angels
Sylvia talks about her personal experiences with angels, presents extensive research on the subject, and offers heartwarming stories by numerous contributors.
Today, as the nightly news reports one disaster after another, books, TV shows, and movies are filled with tales of angels. Is it mere coincidence, or are angels making their presence more actively known? In these chaotic times, this work makes sense of it all—offering us reassuring messages from these beings of light who surround us each day.
Secrets & Mysteries of the World
Using a combination of information from her spirit guide Francine as well as her own incredible psychic powers, Sylvia augments current scientific research to provide us with detailed explanations about seemingly inexplicable concepts. From the Great Pyramid to Stonehenge, Sylvia reveals amazing facts about some of the world’s most mysterious sites. The truth behind sacred and controversial topics such as the Shroud of Turin, the Holy Grail, and the lost years of Jesus are also brought to light; and fascinating and mystifying subjects such as crop circles, vampires, voodoo, Atlantis, extraterrestrials, Easter Island, and many more are examined and clarified.
Sylvia tears away the obscure and timeworn explanations that hide the underlying truths about these phenomena, taking us on a fabulous journey that unlocks the secrets and mysteries that surround us in this “wonder-full” world.
If You Could See What I See
This enlightening book contains the Gnostic tenets of Sylvia’s church, the Society of Novus Spiritus, and is a map of our charts—regardless of what spiritual path we follow. It has taken many years of research to put together this information, but as we go deeper, we can see that this book carries within it the very heart of humankind’s search for our own spirituality.
Sylvia has also included many details from her own personal journey, which she feels is comparable to the quest that each of us follows to find our own God-center. As we travel on this road, we can realize that long-forgotten yet inherent goal of viewing our life on Earth as our path to God.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the Most Important Person In the World.......2007-09-19

There are those who may be skeptical that Sylvia Browne can talk to dead people, or that she knows the average daily temperature in Heaven (78 degrees), but did you know that she correctly predicted that AIDS would be in full remission by 1998, that Breast Cancer would be cured and prevented by 1999, that Bill Bradley would win the Presidency in 2000, that David Letterman would quit his show that same year? Well, we're now in the seventh year of the Bradley Presidency and Letterman is now frequently the subject of "where are they now" profiles on television, so that's pretty convincing to me.

Further evidence of Sylvia's powers is that Montel Williams has frequently had her as a guest on his televison show and he seems to be a smart guy. Plus people pay her $700 for a half hour phone reading. Who would pay that kind of money to a fake? I highly recommend this box set. Sylvia clearly sees things the rest of us don't, and I wouldn't be suprised if we later find out that President Bradley regularly consults her. No doubt it was Sylvia who correctly saw that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

            Book Description

A book that gathers the reflections of Albert Einstein about his own life and also about society, religion, politics and economy. He also explains, as only he could, the theory of relativity in simple terms for the lay reader. (Fábula)
