Just as the title says, this is a basic primer on what opera is, what to look for and what to listen to. There is nothing stuffy in Plotkin's style, which is clear and idiomatic. The book also boasts a foreword by supertenor Placido Domingo.

Great book, but there are hidden costs........2006-01-27
"Opera 101" is well written, easy to understand, and very informative. I wish every subject had a reference book so excellent.
That said, there is one problem with the book. The included discussion of eleven key operas is most beneficial if the reader can get ahold of certain recommended recordings. To purchase those recordings is extremely expensive. I bought "Opera 101" because I didn't know anything about opera, and one of the first things I learned as result of buying this book is that a single opera recording can cost more than $50. Unless you have a well stocked public library, a friend with an extensive opera collection, or money to burn, you will not get the most out of "Opera 101".
Glad to see this book well-received.......2004-12-21
It is most heartening to see that opera lovers and novices almost universally agree that this book is excellent, informative, and illuminating. I was maybe 14 when I asked a salesperson in a bookstore "do you have a book that will teach me about opera?" Without hesitation, I was directed to "Opera 101".
I was skeptical. However, I am no longer!
Mr. Plotkin is experienced, informed, and well-read. So as not to belabour the structure of the book (since there are many descriptions of it) I'll say that the idea of walking someone through 11 operas is excellent. That Mr. Plotkin picks a particular recording (with commentary per track) is an indespensible fusion with the book.
That is to say Mr. Plotkin has carefully chosen themes, operas, and what he believes to be superior recordings of the above mentioned as illustrations of what opera can be to the average listener. His decisions on recordings are in no way arbitrary, and he takes special care to choose recordings more easily found than those that might be "better" but are less easily found outside of major metropolitan areas.
Let's remember, the original version of this book was written before the internet made just about any recording available in any area. He admits that sometimes he's arbitrary (especially with his recommendation for Il Barbiere di Siviglia...YUCK) but he always explains his good reasons for choosing inferior performances on disc. His are not "Gospel" recommendations, but those he thinks best illustrate the power of opera in recorded form, customs, and the sheer beauty of the human voice.
Beyond that, Mr. Plotkin performs a yeoman's task of qualifying the different kinds of voices in opera, provides an 90+ page history of opera, and gives the average American a primer in the esoteric "etiquette" of attending an opera performance.
Invaluable for its tutorial format, universal as a detailed introduction; "Opera 101" is a MUST for an opera lover's collection.
Highly Recommended for a Newcomer to Opera.......2004-11-20
If you are on the fence and want to dive into opera, but feel intimidated or confused by it, this book is essential. Mr. Plotkin writes in an engaging style that is neither preachy nor simple. While he certainly has his opinions, he tempers them by offering arguments in favor of other interpretations and other recordings. Before reading his book, opera to me was inpenetrable and perhaps something to be tackled years from now when time would be more available. Yet, because he did such an effective job in his book of introducing and explaining opera, i am now an ardent fan and one who makes the time to listen to and see operas. Bravo Mr. Plotkin!! Encore!
Operating manual for opera attendance.......2004-01-15
Having read about a dozen books that tout themselves as introductions to opera, I found "Opera 101" to be perhaps the most intriguing of the bunch. In an ever-so-slight way, it is at times a bit preachy and a bit overobvious. You will feel occasionally like you are in a high-school music appreciation class, or reading an operating manual. On the other hand, Plotkin leaves absolutely nothing out, and no stone unturned, and for that he is to be commended. Every possible question is answered, and answered thoroughly. In addition, the appendices are chock full o' valuable information (a list of all the major and mid-major opera houses all over the world; books for further reading; recommended CD recordings and DVD filmings; etc.). And you have the feeling at all times that Ploktin knows what he's talking about.
This is the PERFECT book for any adult who knows absolutely zilch about opera but who wants to learn it all, and learn it all out of a single source.
Enjoy it while you learn and love opera.......2003-05-07
An excellent book for those new to Opera. It is a true guide to learn and love Opera. The book contains a brief history of Opera, plus a chapter to understand its basic elements. Even there is a chapter that guides you through the experience of going to the theater for the first time. Then the rest of the book is a guide to learn opera through listening to a selection of great works: Rigoletto, Tosca, Lucia..
An absolute recommendation for those who are starting at knowing Opera. It is THE book. Very easy to read and written with a warm familiar voice, this book will become a best friend in your journey to loving Opera.
I was already an opera lover when I first read it, and even if it is written specially for newcomers, I did enjoy it very much as I re-discovered some of the reasons why I love opera.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Domingo Fans.......2007-06-10
I hesitated to pay $35 for this book, but finally decided to buy it new anyway. I'm glad that I did.
Matheopoulous has done a great service for Domingo and opera fans--covering all of his major roles (up to the year 2000, at least) and getting several pages of his comments about each of them. His is a stunning body of work (he's mastered 124 parts) and this book makes it clear why Newsweek dubbed Domingo, "The King of the Opera".
Domingo's insights into both the opera and his performances are intended for a general audience and add to one's understanding and appreciation of his art. He brings a complex understanding to each role, and his career covers a breathtaking body of work, in 6 languages. (It is typical of Domingo that, already well into his 50's, he learned "The Queen of Spades" in Russian--a language he does not know--"note by note, word by word".)
There is no tenor, living or passed, who has the depth and breadth of work that Domingo does. That he has performed these roles onstage for audiences all over the world--as well as preserving many on CD and in full operatic productions on DVD--only adds to the towering impact he has made, and continues to make, on his art.
Each chapter gives an introduction followed by Domingo's own words about a particular character and (at usually 2-3 pages) one often wishes it were longer. Still, this is intended for a general audience, interested in, but not necessarily familiar with, all of the works discussed. What makes this book so special is that it is a document of a great artist's thoughts about his work, and reads as if it were one complete interview, lovingly and clearly focusing on one role at a time. This is the perfect organization for anyone curious about a particular opera/Domingo role.
"Placido Domingo: My Operatic Roles" is a wonderful book, a thought-provoking reference, and an invaluable documentation of what a great and unique artist Domingo is.

Customer Reviews:
Why bother?.......2002-09-19
Funnily enough, Ms. Lewis does have a daughter - Monica Lewinsky.
Other than camy appeal, this book has no merits whatsoever. Spend your money on some real opera recordings, you'll be glad you did.
Trash.......2002-08-06
Garbage. This is the worst kind of puff, trash piece. Much of this information is culled from other sources. Not worth the time or money. Anybody really interested in the Three Tenors can find better and more interesting information elsewhere.
Save your money!.......2002-01-12
Marcia Lewis is a really bad joke for an author. All the information is lifted out of previous material available. Nothing is new here. She tries to make money on gossip and even fails at that. The pictures are OK but I doubt if any of those are original to this book either. Something for the pop media only; not for opera lovers nor fans of these three artists. The best of these men is their performance on stage and hopefully, that brought some new people to opera that may not have tried it without the 3 Tenors. There is so much more to all three of these men than Lewis' book. Skip it and read their own bios.
Ugh!.......2000-07-17
What a sleazy book! Does this woman have a daughter? Would she want her reading this!
Very sloppy research.......1999-02-21
As Jose Carreras is my favourite tenor, I immediately went to those chapters. All the text was completely lifted from Sr. Carreras's autobiography, and newspaper/magazine articles. A bit of hearsay & innuendo thrown in to give the book a "gossippy" feel. The same goes for the chapters on Domingo & Pavarotti, with the exception that Ms.Lewis would like us to believe that she had an affair with Sr. Domingo. If she is anything like her daughter, I'm sure That the Maestro would want to keep away.
Not even a personal interview. Well, I can't blame the gentlemen for keeping away. My 8yr. old daughter could have done better.
I spent £20 on this book. Still, it helps me to sleep on restless nights, and some of the Carreras photos are cute.
I can't wait until Monica publishes her expose.

Better info on the internet.......2006-02-14
This book is more of a reference encyclopedia rather than guide to opera. Most of the pages are a list of key terms, "the composers", "the performers", and the most well-reputed "operas". As for all the "real-world" type info that NPR is known for, about not being a snob, etc. is not really there. It does not make opera more accessible to the uninitiated. At least it didn't for me.
It admits there is some truth to the stereotype, but nevertheless opera is very unique because it combines all the major Western art forms (drama set to music, with visual arts (costumes, sets, fireworks, etc.), acting, orchestra, songs), and the amount of highly skill people required to put on a opera is unmatched (singers with a vocal range beyond anything done before (ex. castratti), custom makers, set designers, orchestra, conductor, tons of material/props, blah, blah) and therefore it's status as the most glorious thing is obviously justified.
20 pages make up the chapter "opera deconstructed" and even that becomes a list of descriptions! The "love/farewell/suicide aria", "love/oath/comic duet".
This is not the well-thought out work it claims to be (esp. with NPR endorsement). I got it for ~1 dollar used plus shipping, and that's not worth it. Unless you want a succinct reference encyclopedia, ou will be much better served by the wikipedia article.
How You Can Get Into Opera Without Being A Snob.......2003-10-15
National Public Radio is an institution with a legacy in America. All the issues brought up in their broadcasts is of common interest to all Americans. When NPR put their label on this publication written by William Berger and with a great introduction by tenor Placido Domingo, I was hooked. This is a very easy-to-follow, informative introduction to opera for those who would'nt even consider attending an opera. Let's face it people. Opera is no longer just a European elite pleasure. It's become an acceptable, highly entertaining art form in America. New operas in any language are being produced even as we speak. Opera is universal and dedicated to all human beings with appreciation for drama set to music and the art of the human singing voice.
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo (my favorite tenor) begins this resourceful guide with an interesting look at opera in America. Every major city (New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago) have baseball stadiums and an opera house. Both events, baseball games and opera, are now American pasttimes. This book provides a plethora of information regarding the history of opera and how it was made. It was the last creation of the Italian Renaissance. A group of theatre-loving aristocrats set ancient Greek dramas to music and song and the opera was born. George Frederick Handel, classical composer and opera composer was the leading opera composer of this time. His "Julius Caesar" was originally in Italian but when it was "revived" in the 50's and 60's, most Americans heard it sung in English, contrary to what one viewer said, soprano Beverly Sills and bass Norman Treigle put together their efforts into establishing Baroque opera in America and traditionally, these rare Baroque operas were first presented in English and later in Italian. The book then goes on to the highlights of Classical Opera of the 1700's. Besides such obscure names as Salieri, there was the more famous and beloved Mozart, whose operas are regarded as the best in the business- Le Nozze Di Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute being the most popular Threesome of operas. The book then goes into Bel Canto Opera- the lyric and dramatic operas of Bellini and Donizetti to the comic but valuable operas of Rossini. Romantic Opera composers- such as Berlioz, whose Les Troyens and Damnation Of Faust are still presented today, to Verdi's masterpieces- Trovatore, La Traviata, Nabucco, Aida, Macbeth, Othello, and Wagner (Tristan and Isolde, Ring of the Nibelung) and of course the ever popular Italian opera king, Puccini (La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot).
In addition to tempting recordings of artistic value performed by great singers of at least as far back as pre- World War II Era, this book has all the great singers of past and present. Sopranos- Jenny Lind, Lily Pons, Maria Callas, Marian Anderson, Joan Sutherland, Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, Montserrat Caballe, Victoria De Los Angeles, Beverly Sills, Kathleen Battle, Jessie Norman, Grace Bumbry - and tenors- Enrico Caruso, Franco Corelli, Carlo Bergonzi, Nicolai Gedda, Jon Vickers, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavoratti. Believe it or not, there is more to tenors than just the much popularized "Three Tenors". Thanks to this book Americans will look at opera in a whole new light.
Unreliable.......2002-05-20
Question the analytical ability of an author who, in recommending the Sills recording of "Julius Caesar," thinks that the Italian text is sung in English. More to the point, ignore a critic who clearly doesn't listen to the recordings he evaluates.

Product Description
What's a penguin to do living at the South Pole, all dressed up and with no place to go? What good is that natty tuxedo if there's no occasion to wear it? Well, these are no dumb penguins. They invite, for their amusement, the Opera Ship from Old Vienna, and who are its illustrious passengers? Well, (you guessed it) none other than the three tenors, performing that south Pole favorite to boot, La Traviata, starring José Carreras as Alfredo, Placido Domingo as the disapproving father, and Luciano Pavarotti playing the role of the sweet and tender Violetta. Some lucky penguins!
This is (honestly) a remarkable book. The story is written entirely in rhymed couplets, and who can resist verses that run:
All penguins, as I said, wear tails
(or evening dress), not just the males.
You're puzzled by this craze for fashion
And ask the reason for their passion;
Why do they love to be such smarties?
Is it because they like posh parties?
And the artwork is detailed and droll, perfectly catching the whimsical spirit of the text. Opera lovers, penguin lovers, or just plain lovers, will all fall for this bijou from the frozen Pole.

The Always Prayer Shawl (Reading Rainbow Books)
ASIN: 1881283038 |
Book Description
A charming penpal correspondence between a grandmother and her eight-year old granddaughter.
Eight-year old Hope's summer project for school was to become the pen pal of a senior citizen. When her assigned pen pal failed to write back, Hope's mother suggested she write to her grandmother. The result was a two-year correspondence.
This book is a collection of the letters in which Hope's grandmother reveals the stories of her childhood, including the difficulties growing up in turn-of-the century St. Louis. Ultimately, the correspondence teaches readers of all ages some wonderful and joyous insights about human hearts.
Customer Reviews:
Letters of Love.......2002-08-13
I picked up "Dear Hope ... Love, Grandma" because it was so beautiful with a photo of Grandma as a child on the dust cover. I sat in the bookstore and read it cover to cover before buying it. The book is non-fiction. Grandma Hilda and Hope are real people. Each chapter is a story. I couldn't put it down.
"Dear Hope ... Love, Grandma" makes you realize the possibilities of grandmother-granddaughter relationships. Nine-year-old Hope and her grandma write from their hearts. Through their letters, Grandma tells Hope the story of her life. Grandma Hilda was the youngest of five children. Her mother was an immigrant Jewish widow who barely spoke English, yet she managed to impart to all of her children a love of family, loyalty to one another, a love of God, and a healthy dose of humor to see them through the hard times ahead.
Grandma Hilda writes affectingly. She never talks down to Hope and hence not to us either. This is a small gem from an obscure publisher that deserves our attention. It is cautionary tale as well. If we do not save our family stories, our elderly relatives will take them to their graves, and we will lose untold treasures. We doubtless already have.
There is much to be learned from this beautiful volume. I highly recommend it to grandchildren and grandparents alike. What a treasure for you to share together.
Connecting the Generations.......2002-08-08
This is one of the most moving books I have ever read ... because it's true. Grandma Hilda is the grandmother we all wish we had had. She's warm, she's loving, she's kind, she's funny, she's generous, and above all, she's real.
Through her letters to her granddaughter Hope, Grandma Hilda tells the story of her life. Born in 1902 in the Jewish ghetto of St. Louis, Hilda was the youngest of 5 surviving children. Her father died when she was 2. She was raised by her mother who barely spoke Engish, and yet her mother managed to convey to her children her values of love of family, love of God, honesty, loyalty, devotion, and a liberal dose of humor to wash it all down.
Above all, this book is a cautionary tale to save our family stories before it's too late. If Hope had not cared enough to write to her Grandma, these wonderful stories would have gone with Grandma Hilda to her grave. How many family stories could be saved if we all took the time to do what little 7-year-old Hope did? After I read this book, I followed Hope's example. Now my own mother is dead and just like Hope, I have her stories.
Bravo DEAR HOPE ... LOVE, GRANDMA! Everyone needs to read this book.
