Insightful and thought provoking !.......2007-01-09
Great compilation of interviews with the polemical JLG, film students and other filmmakers.Illuminates JLG's trains of thoughts and ideas he explored in many of his most famous movies.
is it mere coincidence that godard starts with god?.......2001-05-31
i can very simply sum up how i feel about this title: one cannot possibly go wrong with the words straight from jean-luc "cinema" godard's mouth. made up of interviews with godard over the decades of his career, this book illuminates godard's various phases and his astounding ideas on cinema and art and life in general. the man is an amazing artist, and if you are at all familiar with his films, you owe it to yourself to read some of what he has to say. his insight into filmmaking and his personal output greatly increases any understanding of his cinematic works. i recommend this book to any student of cinema, academic or just curious, or to anyone who has ever watched a godard film and still had many questions after the screen turned dark. and of course, if you're a godard nut like myself, you should buy this right now and thank me later; this is required reading for godard devotees.
A great view into the mind of Cinema's premiere genius........2000-09-25
Along with GODARD ON GODARD, this book is a must-have for any serious cinema affecionado. The interviews with Jean-Luc Godard are relevatory and thought provoking, and are essential to read alongside viewing his films. It covers his work from his (more popular) early/mid-sixties films through his video work in the eighties and back to his films of the nineties. Highest recommendation.

Book Description
Jean-Luc Godard stands as one of the most innovative and important filmmakers of all time. Films such as Breathless, Contempt, A Woman Is a Woman, Les Carabiniers, Alphaville, and others during the 1950s and 1960s made him virtually synonymous with French New Wave Cinema, a movement that revolutionized filmmaking everywhere, the ripples of which are still being felt today in the films of such directors as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino. Godard was not only a filmmaker, but also a critic and theorist who wrote extensively for the influential New Wave journal Cahiers du Cinema, and he holds definite views on his chosen art form, views that have cemented his legend, and views that he discusses at length in this book that presents, for the first time in English, an important interview with him. A must for film students, and a real opportunity for all fans of these seminal films to gain a better understanding of one of cinematic history's great and legendary figures.

My granddaughter loves these books.......2007-03-31
Sacagawea was the latest book my granddaughter requested from the "Childhood of Famous Americans". She has at least twelve, loves them and enjoys asking us informative questions. How much better does it get: having fun learning about the history of our great country? This 5 star rating is based on feedback from previous ones: I haven't seen her lately.
Sacagawea Review.......2001-06-11
This book was VERY exciting!! I am done with this book now, but I still think about it!! Sacagawea went through ALOT!! For instance like moving, making alot of stuff like: her clothes, shoes, tents, and baskets. Think about it!! Having to make all this stuff. It would take days!! I am sure thankful we have machines now to make different things!! I highly recommend this book!!
Interesting.......2000-05-01
I think that this book included a couple of true facts, but a lot of imagination, how could you know what someone about 100-110 years ago was thinking.I think Flora Seymour did fairly well job, considering that she was writing a children's storybook. I applaud you Flora Seymour!

This is a must read for young people. It gives an excellent picture of one of the most important Native Americans in American history. Stanley makes Geronimo come to life.

Blood Politics: Race, Culture, and Identity in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma
ASIN: 0195182987 |
Book Description
The first biography of Jackson Barnett, who gained unexpected wealth from oil found on his property. This book explores how control of his fortune was violently contested by his guardian, the state of Oklahoma, the Baptist Church, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and an adventuress who kidnapped and married him. Coming into national prominence as a case of Bureau of Indian Affairs mismanagement of Indian property, the litigation over Barnett's wealth lasted two decades and stimulated Congress to make long-overdue reforms in its policies towards Indians. Highlighting the paradoxical role played by the federal government as both purported protector and pilferer of Indian money, and replete with many of the major agents in twentieth-century Native American history, this remarkable story is not only captivating in its own right but highly symbolic of America's diseased and corrupt national Indian policy.
Customer Reviews:
YAWNNNNNNNNNNNN.......2006-08-22
This book was interesting but BORING!!! I do not like books that hash out court trials and in particular when it revolves around money. That was 85% of this book. How many times can you go over what was done with this money or those funds. Penny pinching in print. I'm not interested in financial reports. I was interested in the world's richest Indian. I got very little of him, but I suppose there wasn't much to say about him. They gave his wife a really bad time, but like witnesses for the defense said, she gave him a better life than he had when she found him and helped him use his money to live a life someone with that much money should. Who was hurt by it? Why did everyone care so much? They wanted their share which they didn't deserve. It was really something how people acted. No different than today, 2006! But when EVERY page had some dollar amount on it-how can you keep track of what's being discussed? How many times can they doubt or affirm the sanity of Jackson Barnett??? The poor old guy lived to 90, so I guess you could say that 'living well is the best revenge'.
Both Scholarly and Enjoyable.......2003-12-10
With some writers, an abunce of detail is mind-numbing, as in the "begat" passages of the Old Testament. In contrast, Tanis Thorne uses a myriad of details as would a pointillistic painter to create a vivid and poignant biography of Afro-Muskogee Jackson Barnett, "The Richest Indian in the World".
Barnett had belonged to the Muskogee faction opposed to individual land allotment, known as Snakes. On the Snakes' refusing to designate choice homesteads, allotments were issued in their names in the hardscrabble hills of Oklahoma. Barnett's 160-acre allotment ironically turned out to be centered over one of the world's great oil pools. Barnett was thereafter placed under state court conservatorship to limit the enormous flow of oil royalties to a meager living allowance.
An attractive "adventuress" heard of Barnett's wealth, located his modest home and eloped with him the following day.
A three-way battle erupted between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Oklahoma state courts and Anna Barnett for control of the fortune. Anna Barnett succeeded in prying free enough income to finance a move to a fashionable suburb of Los Angeles, where Jackson Barnett passed many of his days directing traffic. He became a regular tourist attraction.
Anna ultimately lost after Jackson Barnett's death. The marriage was judicially annulled and Anna was evicted from the home. She died in poverty years later.
Dr. Thorne uses the biography to portray the inherent clash between Creek values of generosity and sharing and the dominant culture of selfishness. Using this theme, Dr. Thorne segues into a brief discussion of today's Cobell litigation challenging the entire federal trust accounting of American Indian funds.
This book is a valuable contribution to American Indian history. Beyond that, the book sets a high standard for combining historic writing with lively and accessible prose.

An Historical Treasure.......2003-12-29
This is one of my most treasured books, and a real find. I've shared it with Indian friends who had never known of some of these speeches. It's a book to pass on and buy again and again.
The book neatly arranges brief notes on historical settings with photographs and famous speeches of Seattle,Red Jacket,Chief Joseph,Cochise, and many others. The emphasis is on the oratory.
The Chiefs' eloquent voices could all too easily have been lost in the torrent of 19th and 20th Century North American time and events, since they had no written language. We are fortunate that these were recorded and put into book form.
The Chieftans' mastery of the spoken word allows them to express themselves in surprising ways. Much character is revealed in a few sentences.
