Book Description
With the explosive increase in availability of English Bible translations, the question can easily be asked, “Why bother with the hard work of biblical exegesis?” Computers can translate foreign languages and our English texts can take us very close to the original meanings, so why exegete? Answer: because the deepest truths of the Bible are found through the deepest study.
This book teaches the principles, methods, and fundamentals of exegeting the New Testament. It also has examples of textual exegesis that clearly and helpfully show the value of exegeting a text well. Any serious student of Scripture would benefit from utilizing this book in the study of the Bible.
“
Interpreting the New Testament Text is a contemporary application of Paul’s charge to Timothy to study to present himself to God, approved as one who correctly handles the word of truth. Highly recommended!”
Andreas J. Köstenberger, Professor of New Testament and Director of Ph.D. Studies, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
“This ‘how-to’ guide provides significant step-by-step help for first-year seminarians. It should prove very helpful.”
Klyne Snodgrass, Paul W. Brandel Professor of New Testament Studies, North Park Theological Seminary
“Not only an excellent textbook but also a useful refresher for pastors and teachers engaged in the weekly study of the text for ministry.”
Clinton E. Arnold, Professor and Chairman, Department of New Testament, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University
“Covers the exegetical landscape admirably.”
B. Paul Wolfe, Associate Professor of New Testament, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
“A comprehensive, thorough, and excellent guide to exegetical method that I am happy to recommend with enthusiasm!”
Donald A. Hagner, George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary
“Fanning and Bock have compiled an all-star cast of lucid writers on exegetical method with like-minded writers illustrating good interpretations of texts and themes. It’s really two books for the price of one, with each made better by the other!”
Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Denver Seminary
“This excellent collection of essays provides a solid foundation for all whose goal is to hear and obey God’s Word.”
Mark Strauss, Professor of New Testament, Bethel Seminary–San Diego
“A tool that takes you into the best New Testament classrooms for the simple price of one volume.”
David Wyrtzen, Adjunct Professor, Dallas Theological Seminary; Pastor, Midlothian Bible Church

Good Introduction.......2007-01-04
Interpreting the New Testament Text: Introduction to the Art and Science of Exegesis edited by Darrell Bock and Buist Fanning is divided into two parts. The first deals with methodology. This section travels from defining "Exegesis" through 13 chapters to application, ethics, and preaching.
In between the authors survey and explain textual criticism, grammatical analysis, diagramming, lexical analysis, exegetical problem solving (validation), background studies, genre studies (narrative, epistolary, apocalyptic), the Old Testament in the New, and theological analysis. All of this covers just over 300 pages.
The second section of the book provides 150 pages of exegetical examples of these activities written by some big name scholars such as I Howard Marshall and Edwin Yamauchi and many other lesser known but still excellent scholars.
The book as a whole is extremely well organized and has the wonderful benefit of bibliographies at the end of each section.
Overall the book is an excellent introduction for those who are just beginning to study New Testament Interpretation. For more indepth study Stanley Porter's Handbook to Exegesis of the New Testament is a more advanced level book, but even still don't loose Bock and Fanning, it has made a valuable contribution to the field.
Also unlike some similar books, Bock and Fannings's book is a hardback which will last longer.
Finally, the book is a Festschriften (a sort of tribute) to Harold Hoehner, who had a major impact on how exegesis was done at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Quality text, quality workmanship, five stars.

Poor "TIMING" ..........2007-03-11
I read this book when it first came out. I have been holding back reviewing this book at Amazon, awaiting word from the publishing company, but nothing has arrived. I indicated something very important was missing from the timeline that was emphasized in the book and was an important event in history. Let us see if you, careful reader, might find it lacking:
Page 59 TIMELINE:

Where is THE SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOCENTS?
... I questioned the company and as of this date, I still have not had
a reply.
Prior to my finding this error, I would consider this book for adult reading as well as children. It
was well researched, well written. I thought in "time" their would be an
"errata", but I still wait, and wait, and wait...
A very good introduction.......2002-06-18
This short book gives a quick biography of one of history's "villains", Herod the Great, Kind of Judea. Beginning with his father, Antipater, an Idumaean Arab, the book examines Herod's rise to power and his machinations to stay in power. This book is very interesting, even for adult readers, and I especially liked the many pictures. Overall, I found this to be a very good introduction to the life of Herod the Great.
Book Description
Rather than depicting Herod as the merciless author of the Massacre of the Innocents the author shows him to be a giant of a man who has many claims to greatness.

A Different Look @ Herod.......2006-09-09
Stewart Perowne's classic "The Life and Times of Herod the Great" offers a different look at this ancient king of the Jews. Having penned the book first in 1956 it was republished, as a paperback, in 2003. This biography is well resourced with maps, chronological tables, and a helpful family tree graph (one does wish for more end notes than the provided 2 pages).
Through much of history Herod the Great is considered an evil, vicious, family killer (a view, probably, originating with early Christianity's abhorrence of his infanticide order in Mathew 2) whose only interest was power. Perowne, knowing this herodian tradition, proffers considerable suggestion that Herod has been misunderstood. The author forthrightly says that Herod's subjects were often "grateful to him" (page 111) and that he did much for the humanitarian benefit of his kingdom.
Using 1st century sources (Josephus, Tacitus, Strabo, Dio Cassius, etc.) the author reviews Herod's life, family, rule, and history. Perowne considers the king's accomplishments, conquests, treaties, architectural constructions, and legacies. Readers learn of Herod's rise to power with Roman support, his Idumean familial origins, his ability to charm the most powerful politicians of his day, his refusals for Cleopatra's romantic invitations, his ability to make vast sums of money (Herod was, perhaps, the wealthiest person of his era), and much more. Perowne also speaks to Herod's vast building enterprises across Palestine and Syria. He witnesses Herod's personal friendships with Rome's leaders and his animosity for fellow Arab rulers.
Herod built a new fresh water system for arid Jerusalem. He began a third construction era on Jerusalem's temple (a grand project which continued into Christian times). As king, he constructed a busy seaport on the shores of the Mediterranean at Caesarea. In the famine of 24 BC, Herod sold all his palatial furniture and princely mealtime equipment for the purchase of Egyptian grain in order to feed his populace.
It is true that Herod the Great executed all his political enemies included several in his family (one wife and her mother, his uncle, and two of his sons, etc.). This was shocking even for the turbulent and murderous times in which he lived. Perowne speaks to these events bringing clear insight to each episode.
"The Life and Times of Herod the Great" is an interesting and helpful book. It's brief chapters (averaging only 6 pages each) make this 186-page text a quick read. It is recommended to everyone interested in the Herodians, middle Roman history, the century before Christ, and those curious about Herod the Great.

Book Description
Herod the Great, King of Judaea from 444 B.C., is known as one of the world's great villains. This notoriety has overshadowed his actual achievements, particularly his role as a client king of Rome during Augustus's reign as emperor. An essential aspect of Herod's responsibilities as king of Judaea was his role as a builder. Remarkably innovative, he created an astonishing record of architectural achievement, not only in Judaea but also throughout Greece and the Roman east. Duane W. Roller systematically presents and discusses all the building projects known to have been initiated by Herod, and locates this material in a broad historical and cultural context.
Bringing together previously inaccessible material, Roller enriches our understanding of the enigmatic Herod and provides new insights into Roman architecture. Herod was instrumental in the diffusion of the Augustan architectural revolution into the provinces and was the first to build outside Italy such Italian architectural forms as the basilica, amphitheater, villa, and Italian temple. Herod's legacy provided a groundwork for the architectural Romanization of the east, influencing the construction of the great temple complexes and palaces so familiar from later Roman architecture.
Herod, like Augustus himself, was not only interested in architecture but also in diplomatic and financial contacts among cities of the region. In addition to providing a repertorium of the building projects, this study is also an exploration of international relations in the eastern Mediterranean at the beginning of the Roman imperial period.

Book Description
This extraordinary book explores the personal history of Herod the Great.
Customer Reviews:
Herod the Great.......2007-01-04
This book is poorly written. There are many punctuational mistakes, the book does not flow well, and it is generally hard to read. Despite these facts, the book does contain a wealth of information about Herod's life and the time period in which he lived. You just have to be able to reorganize yourself, in your mind, which is rather a pain.
An indepth look at the life of Herod the Great.......2005-09-15
This book is not only well written, but also well researched. Dr. Knoblet's research reveals one of the most detailed looks into the life of Herod the Great, while at the same time the content of his book is easily understood.
Book Description
Herod was Rome's most important and powerful ally at the end of the Republic and during the first years of Augustus' principate. He has entered posterity as a ruthless ruler against both his own family and, according to the gospel of Matthew, as the instigator of the slaughter of the innocents. However, he was also an able administrator who developed a powerful army. At its peak, Herod's army could field approximately 40,000 men. This book offers a fascinating look at the ancient army of Herod the Great, using the latest Israeli archaeological reports and finds, including weapons and armor fragments.
