Thinking How Sweet the Sound by George Beverly Shea would be a good book to have because of all the wonderful songs special to this great man, turned out to be much more than I had imagined. This great book has now found it's way along side of my Bible in my devotional time. It is
perfect for me as I am blessed by the songs and the background of each one.
This is a book which I will treasure for years to come. If you enjoy the great old hymns you too will be blessed.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Songs.......2006-01-03

This was a very enjoyable book. All of the stories were touching and had a message about love and faith. The book was very well written, only a few typo's. The writing was sincere, the messages were clear, and the stories were heart felt. It's good to pick up a book about the goodness of God. Believer's and non-believer's should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Speak to my heart..........2005-04-09

There is nothing sweeter, outside of the love of God, than a loving relationship with the one who makes your heart flutter and your pulse race just by looking at them. To love and be loved...oh what a wondrous feeling. In HOW SWEET THE SOUND, authored by highly acclaimed authors Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason, we are introduced to six individuals who find love when they least expect it, and for one couple, a second chance at love.

As a huge fan of both the romance and Christian fiction genres, this combination of both really touched my heart. Each author's story was heartfelt, heartwarming, and a beautiful testament to true love. They were romantic without being sappy, and even though the novel is faith based, it is not preachy, but the underlying message of waiting on and believing in God for all things is apparent and speaks volumes. HOW SWEET THE SOUND has already been added to my list of all-time favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul.......2005-03-18

Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason join together to bring their readers stories based around the Peaceful Rest Church. Good preaching is essential in any church, but Peaceful Rest Church is known for the soul stirring vocalists and choirs. While singing for the Lord, the characters in these stories also find love.

In Make a Joyful noise by Jacquelin Thomas, Desiree Coleman sings for the Lord, loudly and badly. When famous R&B sensation Bradley Rhodes comes to Peaceful Rest to take over the choir, he is horrified and insists that Desiree be dropped from the choir. Desiree is determined to sing in the choir and challenges Bradley to make her a better singer. What Bradley does not count on is how this songtress makes her way into his heart.

In Then Sings My Soul by Francis Ray, Grace Thompson is the staunch hymns only choir director of Peaceful Rest Church. Caleb Jackson is the hip-hop choir director at Summerset Junior College. When Grace is paired with Caleb Jackson, to join the two choirs to perform at the annual Harvest Celebration at the college, she is beside herself. Grace is convinced that Caleb and his version of gospel music is the work of the devil and will be detrimental to the celebration. Instead, when she and Caleb begin to work together they are able to come to terms with their individual style of music and with each other..

In Heart Songs by Felicia Mason, Carys Shaw and the Rev. TC Holloway become reacquainted at their 25th college class reunion. Both are widowed and battling personal demons. An impromptu performance leads to the choir reuniting to sing again. Rehearsing and reminiscing brings Carys and TC together. Before long, it becomes apparent that the Lord has brought them back together again for a different reason. .

This anthology brings romance into Christian Fiction on a higher level. The couples are well rooted in their faith and live a lifestyle conducive to their convictions. These love stories are tasteful and romantic. This is a book for the Christian Fiction lover and the Romance lover. I am sure they will enjoy as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable!.......2005-02-23

I'm going to have to give this one 5 stars. I occassionally purchase Harlequin Inspired novels and have enjoyed them, but haven't always felt the spiritual depth that the editors allowed these authors to explore. This was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed this book and pray the publisher will continue to give African American readers stories we can relate to. Thanks to all the authors for their great stories.

Blessings,

The story of John Newton and William Cowper, authors of some of the greatest hymns in the world, such as "Amazing Grace," "There Is a Fountain," and "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken." We have heard these tunes played and sung hundreds of times; but few of us realize these are just a small part of a larger collection written by two men who had become close friends. Two men from completely different backgrounds, drawn together by their love for God and their love of literature.

      Book Description

"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see."

When Cissy Houston sings "Amazing Grace" on her 1997 Grammy Award-winning album, Face to Face, her soul-stirring passion leaves no doubt that this is a woman blessed with a beautiful voice and a life story to be shared.  In How Sweet the Sound: My Life with God and Gospel, Cissy tells of the good and the bad of life with as much emotion and depth as she sings her beloved gospel music.

Cissy is a Grammy-winning singer, but this isn't about popularity.  She is the proud mother of pop-music sensation Whitney Houston, but this isn't about fame.  She starred in off-Broadway shows such as This Is My Song, and shared the screen with her daughter in The Preacher's Wife.  But Cissy Houston's life is really about finding meaning, direction, and love; it is about being a woman of high moral principles and integrity in a world where both seem to be lacking; it is about being a wife, a mother, and a sister in the tug-of-war between family and a career that took her all around the world.  Hers is the story of gospel music, from slavery to salvation based on God's "amazing grace."

Born as Cissy Drinkard in a tough Newark, New Jersey, neighborhood in September of 1933, she was the youngest of eight children.  With her father's talent and love of four-part gospel, she started singing at a young age and never stopped, no matter what happened in her life.  In How Sweet the Sound, Cissy weaves the many threads of tragedy and triumph in her inspiring life together into one great melody of joy that will raise the spirits of fans and readers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Book-How Sweet The Sound --By Cissy Houston.......2005-08-11

I had ordered two gospel cd's by Mrs Cissy Houston and they were soooo anointed. As I was listening to them, I said, this lady has really been through something to have such anointed songs. So, when I saw her book on the internet, I ordered it, and I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. The book was so touching. She went through alots but, her faith in God brought her through. She is such a strong woman. Whitney Houston is blessed to have a mother like this. I would recommend this book to everyone who is going through trials. She lets you know, that through prayer and faith in God you can come through any situation victorious.

4 out of 5 stars God Bless the Child.......2002-07-08

I have always been fascinated throughout the years by Ms. Houston's voice, but somehow, she was surpassed and her daughter has attatined all the success. I was delighted when I saw the book on the shelf and could not put the book down. I think the book was well written and she tackled her subjects with taste and dignity. Despite her lack of success, I respect how she humbled herself to shower praises on other artists, including Aretha Franklin, who she accompanied on numerous of her classic recordings. This book also shows the struggles that she endured as a struggling performer raising a family. I admire the fact that she did not neglect her parental duties and molded her children to exhibit class and respect (which Whitney is now losing I must add), which I can respect and appreciate. I wish her all continued success. I recommend the purchase.

      4 out of 5 stars Sugar Coated.......2001-12-09

Cissy Houston is a wonderful singer. Anyone who listened to her sing in the 70s still has to wonder why she didn't end up a superstar. The book presents a a wonderful but I suspect sugar coated verison of her fascinating life.

4 out of 5 stars THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK SAYS IT ALL.......1999-11-21

When first heard Cissy Houston sing on one of her 70's solo albums I wondered why this woman is not a household name and espeacially after I found out about her being lead singer of the Sweet Inspirations, this is a book about a woman who never received her just do for someone with such a captivating voice!whether behind the scenes are in front CISSY HOUSTON IS A SWEET INSPIRATION!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice. Definitely a must read........1998-06-16

Cissy takes us on an upclose and personal journey into her life. This woman has accomplished so much and has often been overlooked by the music industry. She has definitely contributed to the standard of R&B that exists today. Cissy could have easily been one of the hottest singers of her time. In fact she had a promising career as a solo artist but felt that spending time with her three children was more important. Cissy had a vision and she knew that one day her dreams would become reality. She acknowledges that many of her accomplishments came late in her life and she wouldn't change any of that. Her career today is soaring. She recently one a grammy for her album entitled "Face to Face." Cissy is truly a living legend.

      Book Description

Musical expression is at the heart of the American spiritual experience. And nowhere can you gauge the depth of spiritual belief and practice more than through the music that fills America's houses of worship. Most amazing is how sacred music has been shaped by the exchanges of diverse peoples over time. How Sweet the Sound traces the evolution of sacred music from colonial times to the present, from the Puritans to Sun Ra, and shows how these cultural encounters have produced a rich harvest of song and faith.

Pursuing the intimate relationship between music and spirituality in America, Stowe focuses on the central creative moments in the unfolding life of sacred song. He fills his pages with the religious music of Indians, Shakers, Mormons, Moravians, African-Americans, Jews, Buddhists, and others. Juxtaposing music cultures across region, ethnicity, and time, he suggests the range and cross-fertilization of religious beliefs and musical practices that have formed the spiritual customs of the United States, producing a multireligious, multicultural brew.

Stowe traces the evolution of sacred music from hymns to hip-hop, finding Christian psalms deeply accented by the traditions of Judaism, and Native American and Buddhist customs influenced by Protestant Christianity. He shows how the creativity and malleability of sacred music can explain the proliferation of various forms of faith and the high rates of participation they've sustained. Its evolution truly parallels the evolution of American pluralism.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent work - An expanding provocative area of study.......2004-10-26

First a note of disclosure: As I write this, I am one of David's graduate students at Michigan State University. And thankfully, because of this, David has allowed me to suggest pre-publication comments and and in some small way perhaps add to the fine scholarship of this project.

In "How Sweet the Sound," David Stowe points out that music plays a "variety of roles in religious life." Socially, its a means of transmitting behavioral and belief codes. Phenomenologically, it serves as a channel for means of ecstatic communication through the infusion of power, or as a means for liturgical address and response. Additionally, sacred music accumulates additional meanings over time, layered and even disjunctive in content. These accumulations often occur for invountary as well as voluntary reasons, as music bears the markers of community exclusion, exile, and conquest. In sociological terms, music is part and parcel of creation and maintenance of a religious "habitus." But this always occurs in a broader web of contexts--economic, political, and othewise.

Stowe's approach is to draw broad, yet circumscribed historical contours by examining prominent case studies. His approach is deliberately and commandingly pluralistic, a pluralism extending both within and beyond Christianity. Yet his larger point is that even at its most radically pluralistic and sectarian, stories and narratives from the Hebrew Bible have become and maintained their predominant place in American religious music, and by extension, American religious life. The story of Exodus, in many ways, is the story of Mormons, Shakers, African-Americans, 19th century Esotericists, and Sun Ra's "Afro-Futurism."

Along the way, we see clear trends delineated--such as a tradition of strongly bodily affective religious music in the United States. This should be no surprise, given the primacy of the Hebrew Bible as a source for allegory, metaphor and narrative in Christian religious music. The Biblical Song of Solomon is especially strong in its use of eroticism as religious devotion. Likewise, Moravian hymms have been characterized as "impassioned, full of vivid imagery of Christ's atoning blood and a nearly erotic emphasis on communion with Christ." Methodist hymns, especially those influenced by John Wesley, were in many ways a reaction against this tendency. In a more general sense, neither of the Wesleys could stop the development of American Shaker hymns. Though not erotic in nature, Shaker hymns were certainly affective. Producing visions of ecstasy and celestial kingdoms, and "divine communication," they danced in the set of affective relationships that has been part of the Christian tradition, especially its mystical subtraditions, since its earliest days. Even in the political and religious mainstream of music in the 18th and 19th century United States, William Billings' patriotic hymms produced "inchanting" and "ecstatic" erotic songs.

Together with both Methodist austerity and impassioned eroticism, Stowe adds the secular and sacred histories of songs such as "Amazing Grace," from its use in American civil religion to its expression in Star Trek's funeral for Mr. Spock, and Judy Collins's theurgically protective use of it in the midst of the turbulence of the 1960's. The World Parliament of Religions and the Immigration Act of 1965 are highlighted as catalytic moments in American religious pluralism, helping to give birth to events as diverse as Paul Carus's Buddhist hymnals, the Beastie Boys "Bodhisattva Vow" and Duke Ellington's pluralistically affirming sacred concerts.

And yet we return to the Hebrew Bible again and again, especially in Stowe' examination of Rabbinic cantoring, Kol Nidre, and the controversy surrounding movie "The Jazz Singer." Moody, Sankey, and the Fisk Jubillee Singers are not to be outdone, as the Civil War's role in generating Manichean, patriotic, even Prodigal calls to battle are brought carefully and vividly to life.

This is a highly recommended book. While engaging contemporary concerns such as race, class, gender, and imperialism, this volume goes deeper, and refuses to be bound by specific time periods or specific religious traditions. Where necessary, Stowe crosses all sorts of boundaries to follow the trajectories of songs composed, read, re-read, and re-appropriated in vastly different contexts, from sociology to existentialism. In its dogged devotion to follow different crossing threads of music over time and tradition, as well as the tropes and relationships inscribed within them and by them in adherents. By all means suitable for students of Religious Studies, Stowe's book also stands as well within the perhaps more eclectic but no less rigorous interdisciplinary tradition of American Studies.

5 out of 5 stars Mel Gibson should make a movie about this book.......2004-04-13

Stowe writes with 'Passion' about his subject. Look for Mel Gibson to make a movie about it.

Mr. Boyer captures the essence of gospel music with this wonderfully written document. No other book which focuses on gospel music, which I'm aware of, seems to blend the cultural, spiritual, and historical significance of this genre. Of special note, is the way the gospel sound is heard in various geographic locations in this country. By highlighting Chicago, Philly, and Los Angeles, to name a few, really brings home the spread and influence of the music. Bravo Mr. Boyer, I'm awaiting your next book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Book Description

This new reader contains 38 selections relating to African American cultural history. Drawing upon the author's interest and expertise in oral traditions, this reader identifies historical "texts" that reveal thought and achievement in African American communities in the United States. Professor Fitch emphasizes such non-written records as orature, movement and dance, vernacular architecture, and the plastic arts in combating the notion that traditionally oral communities have little to offer historians. HOW SWEET THE SOUND portrays the urgency and vibrancy of African American history.

A Little Too Close to God is a candid, funny, passionate, and deeply personal portrait of present-day Israel. David Horovitz, an English journalist who emigrated to Israel in 1983, now faces the painful question of whether to stay in his chosen country, where, he writes, "I care about what's happening with a passion that simply doesn't apply anywhere else," or to raise his three children in a safer, saner place. Horovitz deftly weaves personal concerns with political analysis. He is a liberal and a committed supporter of peace with the Palestinians, but his book also accounts for the most convincing arguments against reconciliation--arguments conveyed lightly, through family anecdotes about his relationships with a brother-in-law in the West Bank and an Orthodox cousin. No one will finish A Little Too Close to God with any doubt about where Horovitz stands regarding Israeli politics, however. His book is, finally, a strong attack on the idea that Israel is invincible. He sees a great deal of violence and moral failure in his society (at one political rally: "I felt as if I were among wild animals, vicious, angry predators craving flesh and scenting blood."). He sees so much of this sort of thing that he cannot believe that Israel can afford to do anything but compromise. --Michael Joseph Gross

          Book Description

When David Horovitz emigrated from England to Israel in 1983, it was the fulfillment of a dream. But today, a husband and a father, he is torn between hope and despair, between the desire to make a difference and fear for his family's safety, between staying and going. In this candid and powerful book, Horovitz confronts the heart-wrenching question of whether to continue raising his three children amid the uncertainty and danger that is Israeli daily life. In answering that question he provides us with an often surprising, myth-shattering, and shockingly immediate view of a country perpetually at a crossroads, yet fundamentally different than it was a generation ago.

The Israel that Horovitz describes is at once supremely satisfying and unremittingly harsh. It is a land of beauty and spirit, where the Jewish nation has undergone remarkable renewal and a vibrant society is constantly being reshaped. But Horovitz also describes how the unrelenting tension has produced a people that smokes too much, drives too fast, and spends far too much of its time arguing with itself.

He makes clear the lasting effects of Yitzhak Rabin's assassination; the increasing incursions by the ultra-Orthodox into the domain of daily life; the anxieties that beset parents as their children approach the age of mandatory military service; and the constant fear of violent attack by fundamentalist extremists. (The book in fact opens, hauntingly, with a description of the aftermath of a bombing just outside a Jerusalem restaurant -- the very place where Horovitz had eaten lunch the day before.)

As Americans wrestle with their feelings toward Israel, and as Israel struggles with the question of whether a Jewish state and the principles of democracy are truly compatible, Horovitz illuminates the myriad quotidian experiences -- both good and bad -- that define the country at this volatile time.

Here is the moving, mordantly funny, and uncompromising account of one Israeli's life.

4 out of 5 stars An honest convincing account containing a number of political misjudgments.......2007-02-12

I suspect that had David Horowitz written this book today( February 12 2007) it would be a far different one from the one that appears here. I suspect his antagnoism to Benjamin Netanyahu would have mitigated somewhat especially after Netanyahu's stellar role in reviving the Israeli Economy when he served as Treasury Secretary. I suspect that Horowitz would still be concerned about ' terrorist bombs' in Jerusalem( One of the major themes of this work) but far less so than he was then. I hope I am not opening my mouth to the Devil but Terror successes have fallen off considerably, and there has not been one in Jerusalem in months. I suspect too he would be far less optimistic about peace with the Palestinians than he is in this book. A lot has happened since the book was written including Israel's one- sided withdrawal from Gaza. That did not lead to Palestinian recognition of Israel, to the development of a Palestinian economy. It led to more Palestinian terror even against their own people. Horowitz today is perhaps a little more sober about what the Palestinians really think. In this book he makes much of his interviews with Faisal Husseini. I doubt today Horowitz would be so naive as he appears to be in these pages.
Horowitz is a good person and a fine writer. He is a caring family man, and that is felt throughout this work. He is a responsible human being who is open to others who disagree with him. He truly can listen to others as he listens to his settler brother-in- law in some of the finest pages of this book. He since writing this book has gone on to become editor of the 'Jerusalem Post' where he does his best to provide his readers opinions from all ranges of the political spectrum.
This work is the story of Israel during a certain period. I do not know what exactly the emotion is with which I read here Horowitz's great expectations for Ehud Barak as Israeli Prime Minister. He turned out to be perhaps the worst Prime Minister Israel has ever had.
But Horowitz does not claim to be a prophet. He is a honest decent reporter, a good human being, and a very loyal and responsible Jew and Israeli.
This is a fine work however it has been made in places 'ironic' by time.

5 out of 5 stars Important to read regardless of your politics about Israel.......2004-09-08

If you want to get an inside view of life and politics in Israel, read Horovitz' book [along with Daniel Gordis' If a Place Can Make You Cry/ Home to Stay]. As a British Jew married to an American Jew, Horovitz has chosen to raise his family in Israel though not without reservations. His focus is a little more political than personal, but there is a very thin line between the two. His commentary on the current political scene and his own ambivalence about keeping his family is Israel after Rabin brings the news we see on TV down to a very personal level. Well-written and an easy read. Highly recommended especially if you want to learn more about the political nuances in Israeli life.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of it's kind..........2003-04-28

A bit too politicized for my taste - why have value judgements of the settlers and the religious every other paragraph? Otherwise not too bad. [...]

          1 out of 5 stars Politically Biased, Author's diatribe.......2003-02-01

I got this book with high hopes for a window into the life of an every day Israeli. I was sadly, sadly dissapointed. It is more than obvious that the author wrote this book only to expouse his own political view points, and to lash out at every aspect of Israeli society with which he has a bone to pick.

          * He places the entire blame of the Intifadah on the assassination of Rabin

          * As such, he places the majority of the problems of Israel on anyone wearing a kippah

Despite this, he manages to maintain an air of I'm-better-than-everyone-else throughout the majority of the book.

I suggest you avoid this book, as it is not what you are expecting. This isn't a window into Israeli life, it's a window into the authors mind (read: politics)

I hate being so negative, I don't even write reviews much. This one needed writing.

2 out of 5 stars No Poetry with his Politics.......2001-06-14

Sorry, but I couldn't get with this non-fictional narrative, too lacking in any poetics for my taste. Might be a fine book, just too loud and too little nuanced for this reader.
