Book Description
When Welsh assault rock'n'rollers The Manic Street Preachers burst onto the British guitar band stage in 1992, they put the rest of the contenders to shame. In the wake of dance culture, rock bands had mostly abandoned the pure energy and subversive anger of punk and rock in favour of a laid-back hybrid of beats and murmurs. From a small town in Wales, The Manics reclaimed the purity of the form, playing their glam punk with a religious fervour. They had better clothes, slogans and interview technique than anyone since the late '70s and over two albums, '92s Generation Terrorists and '93s Gold Against The Soul, James Dean Bradfield, Richey Edwards, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore fast-tracked from cult heroes to national talking point, offending and confronting as they went and firing off brilliant anthems for the alienated. The self-destructive tendencies of guitarist Richey Edwards provided a melodramatic subplot to the music, as he progressed from carving the words 4 REAL into his arm during an interview, to his final unsolved disappearance prior to the release of '94s The Holy Bible. Like Nirvana, The Manics were always more than just another capable band, and their rise to international stadium-filling status in the aftermath of Edwards' exit has not entirely dissipated their aura. Japanese photographer Mitch Ikeda began shooting the band on their early tours in Japan and became closely involved with their visuals. His elegant images of before and after Richey brilliantly capture their rock-stars-in-leopard-skin flamboyance, as well as framing the fragility and existential doubt that lurked behind the vicious wall of chords. Like Anton Corbjin with US, Ikeda got inside their identity and defined them absolutely. This book, the official memento of ten years of Manic mayhem, includes reminiscence and commentary from the remaining members of the band and an original foreword by Nicky Wire.

I'll Take A Picture of You..........2003-05-31
This is definitely a book for the fans.
At first, I wasn't going to bother to order this until the price came down, or I just wasn't excited enough. I don't know what I was thinking. Plus, being an American Manics fan, it wasn't exactly easy to find here...and our pub. date kept getting pushed back...yadda yadda yadda.
After reading reviews of the book, and seeing some of the photos previewed, I gave in. I'm glad I did. It's beautiful.
These are photos taken by longtime photographer and friend-of-the-band Mitch Ikeda. It's a tribute to his incredible competence and artistic sense that he manages to make every moment caught on film as epic as the band itself. From the first shot of the band, through Richey's disappearance, to the current Manic Street Preachers, Mitch manages to capture James, Nicky, Sean, and Richey as friends, family members, musicians, and--most importantly--as human beings. As for Richey himself, he is shown in his lighter moments (puppet!), as well as his increasingly darker and haunted moments. It proves that he wasn't always moping about as popular mythology (and Simon Price's book) has it.
Not only do you have the photos to tell the story, but most of them have captions from the bandmembers...touching, funny, telling.
Grab a bottle of your favorite spirits, put on the appropriate music, get comfortable, and open this book. You'll find it difficult to put it down.
Manic Brilliance As Captured by Mitch.......2003-02-16
Forget about Simon Price! His book was an interesting read, but a bit lacking in heart. If you want the rest of the story you simply *must* get Mitch Ikeda's photo biography of the Manic Street Preachers.
So much of the Manic's manifesto was presented through visual imagery and the only way to really *get* what they are about is to see it for yourself. Witness the Wire scissor-kicking in his skirts, see James in army gear, Sean drumming his heart out and Richey looking soulfully at the camera with his big sad eyes.
Mitch has also caught intimate moments of exhaustion, sadness, and joy. Let me tell you, the book is worth it just for the pictures of Richey smiling and having a laugh with the others; precious and rare moments indeed.

Their truth..........2003-01-31
My dear friend Fiona from Newcastle turned me on to the Manics in 1991 and their first San Francisco show the following year (in the wake of the L.A. riots) remains one of the most powerful I've seen. How fitting, then, that Fiona should send me this book in my Christmas package. Simon Price makes a compelling story even more so with his riveting writing style, lust for detail, insightful analyses, and insider's view. He whisks the reader from Blackwood bedrooms to the world stage and misses nothing along the way, thank God. Who better to even attempt to take on such a task than Price, a gifted writer whose love for the band imbues the story but who can also provide objectivity and constructive criticism?
Buy this book if you're mad on the Manics and just try to put it down. Buy this book if you're a casual fan or have never heard of them and see what you've been missing.
My truth.......2002-12-31
I don't think I can add very much to what the previous reviewers have written regarding the book. However, contrary to what others have said I disagree that Price being so close to the band and having witnesssed many of the events is a bad thing. Golly that's why it's so great. Price has achieved a level of understanding on the manics through his "being there" few will ever surpass. He is a true fan. Regarding the reviewers bias charge I find the author not guilty. He lends equal weight to both positive and negative attributes of individual band members. The last thirty pages he rightfully laments the manics easy transformation in to a rather impersonal stadium rock act. Overall a well written and objective account of this once important band's history.
Would have been great without author's naked bias.......2002-04-09
Unbeknownst to nearly all American rock fans, Britain's Manic Street Preachers had already carved out an untouchable place for themselves in rock 'n' roll history by the mid-nineties while the tepid, unthreatening chords of the Dave Matthews Band and Hootie and the Blowfish emanated from placid US airwaves. The Manic Street Preachers originally comprised four childhood friends who'd grown up together in rustic Blackwood, Wales, a mining town beset by constant hard times. The adolescent preachers found solace from small-town boredom in the pages of NME, wherein the escapades of Guns 'n' Roses and Public Enemy were recounted in the kind of star-making grandiose language that spurs fifteen-year-olds from playing air-guitar in the bathroom mirror, into playing the real thing in front of sixty-thousand adoring fans.
Sensing that greatness lie ahead, the Manics officially became a band in late 1989 after bassist Nicky Wire and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards completed university. Coining some pungent epigrams along the way ("Smash Hits is more effective in polluting minds than Goebbels ever was"), the Manics boasted to the music press that they'd record one sole album that would outsell Appetite for Destruction, and then split up (neither forecast came true, thankfully). The Manics recorded three classic albums that lyrically captured the Sartrean nausea and valuelessness of post-theistic existence better than any of their predecessors, before Edwards (who's usually credited with writing their bleakest songs) putatively committed suicide. An interesting tale to be certain, if told by an objective biographer, which Simon Price (among other things) isn't.
The Manic's biographer Simon Price, whose naked partiality towards the band -- he rarely criticises anything the band says or does, regardless of how stupid it is -- and superfical explications of the albums stand in the way of this biography being considered excellent by any aesthetic standards. For instance, was it absolutely necessary for Price, who coincidentally shares the same leftist proclivities as the band, to uncritically endorse the band's political views every ten pages or so? (Price even describes communism at one point as a "beautiful dream.") Moreover, Price repeatedly hangs on to the words of each band member like they're gold. In short, the fawning Price makes his biography look like a deliberate PR tool for the band rather than an objective account of the band's history, influences and ideas.
Price also puts his embarrassing lack of critical analysis on display when he discusses the band's albums. His interpretations of Gold Against the Soul and The Holy Bible are ludicrously simplistic, which he just says were reflections of Edwards' mood at the time. And of course a guy who's a self-mutilating alcoholic isn't going to have nice things running through his head; but the question of why he behaved that way is a subject Price almost completely shuns. About the closest Price comes to providing a window with which to peer into Edwards' tortured mind is a quote by lead vocalist James Dean Bradfield, claiming that Edwards' condition might be linked to the fact that he never had any serious relationship. The real answer, however, lies in Edwards' atheistic worldview, which says that life, ending at the grave, is without ultimate significance (thus explaining the band's frequent use of the word "despair"). That Price didn't make this connection testifies to his poor critical skills.
Nevertheless, I recommend this biography for its wealth of information about the band. If there's anything you wanted to know about the band, it's in here.
Stay Beautiful.......2001-09-04
Definatley the best book on the manics available. Simon Price has an huge knowledge of the band, and as well as a general (and highly entertaining) biography this book also has a number of "essays" on things such as the manics and weslh nationalism, the manics and america and many others. A great read for anyone interested in what i (and many many others) consider to be the most important band of the 90's. My only problem is that Price' personal views on a number of things are a bid evident, but hell he spent the time writing the book so he can do that if he wants.
Mostly everything..........2000-07-08
For the most part, this biography is a very well-crafted one; not rushed out on the tails of MSP becomming huge after "Everything Must Go" and even leads up to the release of "This Is My Truth..." An interesting aspect of this book is that the story is told in essay format instead of a chapter by chapter slog through a career of one of the greatest bands in the world today.
While at times a little too personal (Simon uses a lot of "I was there..." methods of relaying the story, which must have been some honour, but after a while it gets a little dull) it is incredibly hard not to keep reading until you've reached the end.
There is some information that is fresh, while obvious topics keep coming up over and over spread out over the pages. While MSP are undoubtedly allowed their own privacy, you would think someone as close to the band would be able to print more details, thoughts, and feelings.
Still, this isn't a dirt sheet like the majority of MSP books on the market, and the money spent will be worthwhile, if only to catch yourself thinking "Hey, I remember when that happened." during the read.

You don't have to buy everything about the Manics, do you?.......2000-08-29
If you are not familiar with the Manic Street Preachers' story, do not buy this book! If you do know about the band, this book is an interesting exercise in finding out how much you really know. I counted 33 glaring factual errors, (and I probably missed a few), starting with the first paragraph, where Richey Edwards is called the group's singer. He was the co-lyricist, and played rhythm guitar. The two major stories of Richey, the "4 REAL" cutting incident, and his disappearance, are so full of mistakes, I quit counting. The single "Motorcycle Emptiness" was not cut back to 4 minutes from its album version, as this book says. Sean does not live in Wales, as this book also says. The only parts of this book that are to be trusted, are the quotes. (Which sometimes, contradict the author's narrative.) But, the quotes are almost all available in much better books, or can be found in the publications they originally come from. And I won't begin to list the spelling/grammatical errors in this book. It's truly mind-boggling how the author of this waste of paper, managed to get this published. Also, I think the author must be American, because he usually uses the terms "English" and "England", but the band are Welsh, from Wales! (Common mistake among Americans - confusing the terms.) He also talks about Richey's "college" days, when a British person would have used the term, "university". In short, this a terrible book. I'd recommand almost anything else, other than this. Unless you want a real laugh. The pictures aren't even worth paying for! Consider yourself warned!
The Richey Biography?.......1999-12-14
The book has a lot of pictures and a little bit of history of the band, but it seemed to focus more on the manic [excuse the pun] life of Richey Edwards. The pictures were great [except I got a bit ill looking at the pictures of when Richey carved "4 REAL" in his arm]. I just think that for a band like the Manic Street Preachers the author could have focused more on the band as a whole, and not just Richey's troubled life. It was good overall, and it's a good book to own if you're a devoted Manics fan.
well, good pictures anyway.......1998-03-29
taking into account the highs and lows the welsh band the manic street preachers have experienced, writing a well-informed history should be relatively easy. unfortunately, this aint it. first off, its very short. come on, all the press these kids got could fill a norman mailer novel. the author seems to just tell the barest of details, most of which focus on the baffling behaviour of lyricist richey edwards, which, although extremely interesting, hardly tells the whole story. on the plus side, the pictures of this very photogenic band are very decent, although they could have been displayed better. to sum up, if you love the manics, its nice to have: otherwise, wait for the more intricate sweet venom to be released.

The musings of Richey, Nicky, Sean and James.......2003-11-02
If you've read all their interviews you probably have read the book in its entirety. Still, I think it's worth a read--it arranges the quotes in sections which keep the quotes related. And it contains the sentences that you may have missed buried in a hefty paragraph, but which spring out on you when they are isolated on the page. A great book.

Your standard compilation of quotes from the boys. Especially apt for the Manics considering Nicky's big mouth, wee Sean's bitter take on everything and James' frankness. Very few bands merit a collection of "dumb-things-we-said-to-the-press" book, but MSP do.

Here is the full story of the iconoclastic British band - from their formative years as an insular gang in south Wales to the tragic disappearance of rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards. A super read about the greatest band ever..........2006-01-18
This book was brought to my attention after seeing the Manics live. They fast became my favourite band and have stayed on top of my musical taste ever sinse. mainly because, as they say, 'They're brilliant and everyone else is rubbish.' This book is not just a regurgitation of information, but a well informed and opinionated bio on a band that has had mor talking points many others will ever have. Through all the contoversial points they raised when they started with Suicide Alley right throught the mental torture of Richey and then to the carrying on after he went. Just buy it and read it. Enjoy!
Not quite everything about the Manic Street Preachers.......2000-08-25
At the time this book came out, this was the best biography about the Manic Street Preachers. Since then, however, it's been eclipsed by Simon Price's Everything. Still, Sweet Venom is a good read about the band. It is more than just the cut-and-paste jobs of earlier Manics bios; the author goes beyond simple retelling of information that was previously available in the media. The book also has some wonderful photos, many not available anywhere else (I believe).

"Sometimes at night I lay and I can't believe what my eyes have seen. I really cannot believe it." --Helen K., Auschwitz survivor
So much has been written about the Holocaust, from academic treatises to popular histories, but it's rare to find a book that captures the texture of everyday living in Nazi Germany. Witness is such a gem. Since 1979, Yale University has videotaped testimonies from Holocaust survivors and witnesses. Twenty-seven of these first-person accounts have been woven into Witness, creating a rough narrative of life before, during, and after the Nazi era. The witnesses are a diverse group: Colonel Edmund M.'s unit liberated Mauthausen concentration camp, Robert S. was in the Hitler Youth, Werner R. survived a death march that killed thousands, Celia K. joined the partisans and sabotaged German railways. The editors wisely remain on the fringe; capsule biographies of each witness and brief introductory pieces allow the testimony to take center stage. Herbert J. was an American POW liberated from Mauthausen concentration camp. He describes how local children were encouraged to assault the prisoners as they were marched to the quarry for work. One girl:
...had a barrel stave. She come and she hit me with it, and I was stubborn and I wouldn't fall down right off easy. And she hit me a couple of times, and finally I went down ... and she bent over me, and she's calling me names and whatnot, and she says quietly, "Here! Here!" And so I reach up defensively and she's poking something at me. It was soft, and I put it inside my shirt. Brotenspeck--broiled pork fat between German bread. Every day after that she was there and she'd do the same thing--only it didn't take as many whacks with that barrel stave to get me to fall down. ... And she never got caught. It would have cost her her life.
Abraham P., a Romanian Jew who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, remembered telling his little brother to stay with their parents when they arrived at Auschwitz. "Little did I know that--that I sent him to the--to the crematorium. I am--I feel like--I killed him [crying]." When Helen K.'s brother died in her arms en route to Majdanek, she made up her mind "that I'm going to defy Hitler. I'm not going to give in. Because he wants me to die, I'm going to live." Many of these accounts are painful to read, but, as noted Holocaust scholar Lawrence L. Langer writes in his foreword, "Without survivor testimony, the human dimension of the catastrophe would remain a subject of speculation." Witness illuminates this dimension, providing a powerful and personal history of the Holocaust. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
A Living Testimony
Fifty-five years after the end of World War II, the Holocaust continues to cast a dark shadow. For the past two decades, the Fortunoff Video Archive at Yale University has sought to preserve the human side of this inhuman era by videotaping testimonies from those who lived through the Nazi regime, a project that has led to an acclaimed documentary film and this extraordinary book.
The Wall Street Journal called the documentary "eloquent and unsparing," and Daily Variety said it was "a staggeringly powerful record." The Washington Times said that Witness "gives new meaning to the term documentary. [It is] as pure a document as I have ever seen on television."
In Witness: Voices from the Holocaust, Joshua M. Greene and Shiva Kumar weave a single and compelling narrative from the first-person accounts of twenty-seven witnesses, including camp survivors, American military personnel, a member of the Hitler Youth, a Jesuit priest, and resistance fighters. The vivid and detailed memories of these witnesses testify to the continuing impact of this human catastrophe, and their impassioned words lend immediacy to events that resonate to this day.
Customer Reviews:
profound, disturbing, a must read on the holocaust.......2004-12-06
I read this book several years ago and it had a profound affect on me. It is divided into three sections: life before, life during, and life after the holocaust for Jewish survivors. All the accounts are first-person narratives by the survivors themselves. I believe they were all interviewed on tape for a documentary. And then they put it into print to create this book. Something that surprised me was how prevalent anti-semitism was in the years before the Holocaust. Sometimes we think Hitler suddenly arose out of nowhere with his anti-semitism. But he was actually just "riding a wave" of hatred of the Jews. The Polish people were in particular very hateful of the Jews. It really surprised me how much they had to endure before WWII even began! This book was a compelling read - true accounts directly from those who survived the greatest horror of the 20th Century.
What a great and Compelling Book!.......2003-04-30
This great, compelling story of historical drama and is told from many points of view from that time in history, the 1940's. The book is set all over in Germany and is told by many different characters. I really liked how the authors described in detail what they felt when, they were being taken to a concentration camp or taken away from their loved ones. This book is a collection of many autobiographies of the survivors in the Holocaust. I loved how this author put together these autobiographies in chronological order, so it was easy to follow. Witness does a great job of telling about the memories that the survivor's in the Holocaust have had for many years. It also helps you understand what is was like for the Jewish citizens and the huge impact the Germans had on people around the world. This book is for every person that wants to know what it was like in the life of a Jewish man, woman, or child during that horrible time in history.

Private Horror!.......2002-06-26
As opposed to earlier commentators I do not come from a background rich in readings on the subject of the Holocaust and therefore Witness came as a unexpected mine of memories of people that had experienced the unimaginable.
My knowledge of the events of the Holocaust were almost exclusively from video documentaries and those documentaries had left many unanswered questions: questions about the Transportation, about the Marches after the camps closed late in the war, about the closing of the ghettos, about the long-term hiding, about the massive anti-semitism that greeted the survivors after the war upon returning "home" and finally the Jewish guerrilla bands that sprang up throughout eastern Europe.
The remarkable thing about this great exercise is the broadness of the interviews that compose the book: the authors assembled a very wide ranging collection of these interviews that spoke about all the topics that I had only heard snatches about in the video documentaries. It was all the more remarkable because these were all primary sources-they were not what somebody had interpreted but the memories of the people that lived the experience and because of this the book had an enormous impact on this reader.
I am a slow reader and the book absorbed me totally and I finished it in a matter of days.
If you read no other book about the Holocaust-read this one.
Great book.......2002-01-03
Although some things in the book are hard to understand(the translated language) I thought that this book was amazing. I am an avid reader of books about the holocaust and this book can give you a view from almost every angle. You can read about a young girl who survived the concentration camps or you can read about a young boy who was a member of the Hitler youth. Overall this book was great.

Book Description
To my great joy, I found poignant letters in my family home describing my father's and his family's life and current events from 1930 to 1940 in Vilnius, Lithuania. On a "roots trip" there in 2000, the letters were shown to the Director of the Vilna Gaon Museum who thought them valuable. Voices is a creative, non-fiction memoir told from the perspective of a first generation 'child'. The letters are arranged chronologically, interspersed with letters to my father telling him what I found. Sadly, new photographs show evidence of ongoing anti-Semitism. I wrote this story as a memorial to the letter writers.
Chapter One contains love letters to my mother from my father. It also describes his desperate attempts to leave the country. Chapter Two shows how hard my father tried to get some of his family out, especially his sister married to a rabbi. Rabbis were targets of oppression. Chapter Three illustrates how difficult life became in Vilna even before the Holocaust. It was a cry for help. They knew what was coming, yet kept hope alive. I'm glad my father could not go back with me because the experience would have been too painful for him.

This belongs in every library..........2007-05-10
Jack Bershad's review is right on the button. It is everything he said it was, and more. Dr. Greenberg's Voices From Vilna is poignant, and priceless. It brings you to tears, while revealing the courage of everyday heroes. It is a book everyone should read.
Voices from Vilna.......2007-01-04
Ms. Greenberg's assembly of these letters and her brief and pointed comments communicate a love affair in a distant time across the world and the love of Ms. Greenberg of her antecedents. All of this in the context of one of the many times of horrific turmoil in the 20th Century. A worthy companion to Anne Frank's Diary and other personal accounts by victims of tyrants, who, notwithstanding their suffering, look to the future with optimism.

incredible and true story.......2005-04-09
As a mother of two young children, I rarely get too involved in a book. But this one I couldn't put down. The story alone is compelling enough, but unlike other biographies, this one reads as well as any novel. This is a story of survival that is a must read.
Gripping Materpiece.......2004-03-03
I couldn't put the book down. Extremely well written and simply a chilling story. I hope it is adapted for the bigscreen.
A moving story.......2003-11-05
A truly moving and inspirational story, combined with a plot that does not let you stop reading makes this novel a must have for everyone. As a story about such a tragic event in human history, this book explores an often ignored aspect of the Holocaust by putting a human face to history.
an incredible story.......2003-10-13
This is a fantastic novel, I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Book Description
Hundreds of ghettos were created throughout eastern Europe by the Germans and their allies during the Second World War. There have been some studies of the largest ghettos - Warsaw and L0dz - and a few accounts of some of the smaller ones; but very little examination of the ghettos a a whole. This pioneering new history draws heavily on the testimonies of those who suffered in them, making use of a wide range of diaries and memoirs (and exploring the problems inherent in such sources). Other documentary sources - particularly German - are also used, but the intention is to look at the ghettos "from below," focusing on behavior, values, and suffering, as well as on the heroism and the passiveness of the Jewish communities. Never before has personal testimony been so extensively used and systematically evaluated to write a history of the East European ghettos.
