Homage to Elmer Batters.......2002-10-18
Elmer Batters: From the Tip of the Toes to the Top of the Hose is a homage to a real American cultural icon--the cheesecake photographer as artist. As any Batters fan knows, his photographs of female nylonned feet and legs raised a personal obsession to the level of pop art. The photos speak for themselves and any person interested in leg art will find them interesting at the very least and erotically fascinating at most. Batters' camera and his eye for composition could transform an absolutely ordinary girl next door type into a mysterious love goddess. As a long-time Batters fan, I expected the photos to be wonderful and erotic. What is surprising about the book is the interview material. Elmer Batters was an ordinary man trying to pursue a vision and make a living by doing something equally contrary to the morality of the fifties and the free sexuality of the sixties. Batters simply did not "fit in" in either decade. It is absolutely fascinating to read Elmer Batters' thoughts on what constitutes a great erotic photograph. It is also interesting and poignant to read about his approach to cheesecake photography: his way of working with models, and the role his wife played as a partner and supporter in what must be one the more unlikely artistic collaborations. The story of Batters' various brushes with the censors in the fifties and sixties are also interesting and more than a little troubling. If I have any criticism of this book at all, it is that I would have loved to have heard more about Elmer Batters' life and struggle to make a living in a very odd profession: photographing nylon legs and feet! This book is a must!
Stockings and Feet Fans.......2001-10-03
Elmer Batters' name is nearly synonomous with leg art and pinup photography. This book is a nice tribute to his work, and my only complaint is that is too brief. The interview with him and the history behind some of the models was interesting reading, and of course, the photos are a treat.
The best!!.......2001-08-03
Mr. Batters has(sadly)passed away but he leaves some awfully big shoes to fill. If you have a foot fetish, then you owe it to yourself to get this book. It makes me smile, ear to ear, when I see the work of this artist. His work isn't commercialized and if you read the book you'll discover he didn't have it as easy as some do today. We all owe this man more than we can repay! But don't just trust the words of others...see for yourself. You won't regret it! ;)
Batters is an Inspiration.......2001-07-13
For those of us who like to wear stockings and suspenders, this book shows how it should be done with style and grace.
FEMALE NYLONED TOES THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF!.......2000-08-15
I grew up collecting Elmer Batters Magazines, 8mm Films and later Videos. Little did I know the World Wide Cultural Icon He would become. Finding this book renewed old passions, in a life filled with erotic Fantasies revolving around Female Nylon Clad Feet which began when I was in 5th grade. I strongly recommend this series for those who where not fortunate enough to collect all of the Masters images. Or as in my case lost the images to neglect and wear and tear of the Original Magazines.I AM A TRUE BELIEVER in elmers legacyA True Believer In Nyloned Female Feet as Objects of Great BeautyEd Lawrenceedlawrence@yahoo.com

American Trade Politics, Fourth Edition
ASIN: 0262541386 |
Book Description
Attention to environmental issues is vital if the full potential economic benefits of international trade are to be realized. Greening the Americas offers a number of analytically rigorous proposals to ensure that economic integration in the Western Hemisphere proceeds in an environmentally sustainable and politically sensible manner.
The chapters review the history of the environmental negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), explore the treaty's economic and environmental impacts, and draw lessons that can be applied to the ongoing Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) negotiations. Greening the Americas analyzes in detail NAFTA's environmental elements, highlighting those provisions that should be included in future agreements and those that should be amended or dropped. The book includes contributions from a diverse set of participants in the debate about how to link environmental policy and trade agreements. The perspectives range from the broadly optimistic about environmental effects of trade and trade liberalization to a more pessimistic view of the economic and social effects of open markets and economic integration. What unites all of the contributions is a commitment to engage constructively in the policy dialogue over how best to integrate trade and environmental policy making in the Americas.

Excellent Introductory Text.......2000-03-28
I have used The Principles of Environmental Management - The Greening of Business - to prepare lectures for my course in Environmental Management. I found this book to be very well organized to meet the needs of students who wished to pursue a career in environmental management. The book is broken into three parts. Part One opens with the basic concepts and environmental issues that plaque us today. It examines among other things social responsibilities and environmental ethics. My favorite chapter in this part deals with the policy-making process. Part Two examines major environmental problems such as Global Warming, Ozone problems, Air Pollution, Water Pollution etc. The nice thing about the book is that it looks at the global aspect of environmental problems - Nice because we are now more interdependent than ever before. In this same part, Buchholz looks at Third World problems such as Deforestation and Species Decimation. Part Three of the book tries to advance some solutions to the environmental problems we face. Excellent, is the real life case studies which have been put at the end of the book. An excellent piece of work.

An excellent book well worth study and reading.......2003-07-02
The greening of Georgia is a valuable book for people who want to understand the changes of the environment in Georgia in the last century. The book is a clearly written historical ecology of the large region of the Southeastern United States found in the boundaries of Georgia. The book is also an argument that the environment in Georgia is better in the present than it was in the past. To marshal this argument Professor Brown appeals to the data from known sources rather than to improper appeals to authority. Figures 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.9, 5.10 and 6.1 are worthy of thoughtful consideration by every reader. Students who wish to learn how to explain scientific data in an honest and effective way should consult this book. In practice the book carries out the principles of honest graphical presentation of data explained by Edward Tufte in "The visual display of quantitative information." The figures tell a clear and relatively straightforward story of advances in the well being of the people of Georgia. The author deftly and accurately chronicles the economic conditions in Georgia in the early 20th century, which went hand in hand with the destruction of the topsoil (in many locations) and the sedimentation of the streams and rivers. Dr. Brown also chronicles the changes in air and water quality and wildlife populations with specific examples. The author does not ignore data that appear to be evidence against his hypothesis. In this regard, the discussion of the decline in bobwhite quail populations is excellent. The author presents a many of the themes of his book in his elegant poem, "Eternal Chattahoochee" on the page at the Start of Chapter 1. The author describes the forces that changed the environment for the better in Georgia. Professor Brown presents a compelling, objective history that should be read by folks with and without scientific training. It is an honest evaluation of the changes in the environment in Georgia. One expects that this story is not limited to Georgia but is true for much of the United States as well. Overall, "The greening of Georgia" is a good book worthy of study and consideration. It is a hopeful story as well.
The Greening of Georgia.......2002-12-13
The following was relayed to me about the book:
Harold Brown is Professor Emeritus of Plant Sciences at UGA.
This book clearly makes the point that Georgia's environment in nearly every way is far healthier, less polluted, and better managed today than 100 years ago. Every point is made with loads of data and the book is fully footnoted and referenced for those who are skeptical or wish further reading.
Authoritative work by a true authority.......2002-08-13
From the top of his 40-yr experience in research in plant physiology and its responses to the environment, Professor R. Harold Brown, world renowned authority, presents a comprehensive treatise on the environment in Georgia. Outstanding writing, by an outstanding author and scientific journal editor. Too bad not all can appreciate it.
Greening of Georgia.......2002-06-11
This is a strange book. It seems well-researched with many citations of previously published work but very little original, if any, work. I agree with the premise of the book but find fault with the author, whoever he is, that he does not seem to understand what is going on. Perhaps he's just an old codger like me.
Book Description
Many large firms and multinational corporations are beginning to develop innovative environmental strategies that acknowledge the fact that sound environmental policies can actually enhance economic competitiveness and increase market share. Rather than simply focusing on regulatory compliance and crisis management, they are moving toward greater internalization of environmental goals. Environmental Strategies for Industry explores this transition in depth.

Book Description
While sustainability is in danger of being reduced to a meaningless platitude, the brutal fact remains that industrial countries make a disproportionately large and negative impact on the environment. A serious transition to sustainability will require changing people's mindsets and social institutions, in addition to public policies, technologies and business practices.
This book presents a path-breaking analysis as well as highly innovative proposals for managing this transition. Emanating from Europe's foremost environmental policy think-tank, it has already stirred up a major new debate in Germany on radical, but feasible, directions in which the governments of industrial societies ought to be moving. The concept of 'environmental space' and its ingenious development of indicators for measuring an economy's national and global impact combine with its delineation of concrete policies to give this book its intellectual power and potential political impact.

The "Bible" of the German Environmental Movement.......1999-09-20
This is definitely the book that has had the most important impact on the German debate on sustainable development in the 1990s. It starts with a quantitative analysis of the disproportionate share that Germany uses of the global environmental space. It furtheron envisions in a realistic manner how Germany could reduce its global impact, and how this could be accomplished while maintaining or even improving the quality of life for its citizens. It shows a wealth of creative new approaches for the transition towards a sustainable society, with an excellent mix of realism and the necessary long-term vision. This book was debated in hundreds of events all over Germany, sparked off an enormous public debate and a series of follow-up publications. It was definitely the most successful publication of the renowned Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. One of its main authors, Reinhard Loske, is now the spokesperson on Environment of the German Greens in the national parliament. This book was called the "Bible" of the German environmental movement by the newspaper Spiegel. It is definitely essential reading for everyone interested in the crucial issue how industrial societies could make the transition towards sustainability.

Book Description
The contributors examine how international law is changing under pressure from global environmentalismand how the United States has used green foreign policy to justify initiatives ranging from foreign aid programs to climate change proposals. They show how environmental issues are moving domestic and international agencies away from their original goals toward "greener" missions and reveal how energy companies and environmentalists often join forces to thwart competition and restrict sovereignty without much positive impact on the environment. In addition, they explain how increased international environmental regulations raise the risk of international tension, reduce free trade, impair U.S. competitiveness, and undermine the confidence and trust of U.S. citizens in their government. This collection of essays ultimately illustrates how expensive the greening of U.S. foreign policy has become and tells how we can find alternatives to government intervention based on free market environmentalism. If the threats of environmentalism are as real as we are led to believe, they can be better handled by returning to the traditional principles of the free society based upon a rule of law The Greening of U.S. Foreign Policy shows how we can return to that path.
Book Description
Over the past two decades environmental issues have become important in public and business policy. This book asks why firms sometimes voluntarily adopt environmental policies that go beyond legal requirements. Prakash argues that existing explanations, especially from neoclassical economics, concentrate on external factors at the expense of internal dynamics. His argument is supported by analysis of two firms, Baxter International Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company, including interviews with managers, and access to meetings and documents. The book will be of interest to students of business and environmental studies, as well as political economy and public policy.

Previews and Book Description.......1999-09-15
Previews:
"Greening the Firm makes an important and original contribution to the literature on corporate environmentalism. This well-researched and theoretically sophisticated analysis links the study of environmental management to both organizational theory and political science. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in better understanding the dynamics of the business response to environmentalism." ---- David Vogel, University of California, Berkeley
"A 'must' reading for political scientists, business strategists, economists, and all others interested in corporate responses to environmental challenges. Aseem Prakash shows how a combination of disciplined empirical inquiry guided by insightful theoretical probes generates new understandings transcending the common wisdom. This book contributes to the theory of the firm as well as to the emerging literature at the intersection of environment, business, and policy analysis." ---- Nazli Choucri, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
"Greening the Firm shines the light of analysis where it has seldom been -- inside the "black box." It explores and explains why some firms pursue beyond compliance environmental activities while others do not based upon their internal processes, players, and politics. The book helps advance the debate about corporate greening beyond "one-size-fits-all" prescriptions based upon external pressures alone." ---- Stuart Hart, University of North Carolina
Book Description:
Greening the Firm examines why firms selectively adopt "beyond-compliance" environmental policies, the ones that are more stringent than the requirements of extant laws. It employs a new-institutionalist perspective and also draws insights from sociological institutional theory and stakeholder theory. It argues that existing explanations, especially neoclassical economic theory, based on factors external to firms are under-specified and a focus on internal dynamics is also required. "Beyond-compliance" policies are adopted, if at all, due to two types of intra-firm processes: power-based and leadership-based.
It focuses on ten cases in two firms: Baxter International Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company. Data was collected by interviewing numerous managers, attending environmental policymaking meetings, and examining internal documents. Consequently, this book is one of the select few that actually examine the internal working of firms on environmental issues in a theoretically rigorous way. It makes a significant theoretical contribution to a broader set of literature often subsumed under the "theory of firm" and its findings and conclusions are generalizable across firms and issue areas.
Aseem Prakash is Assistant Professor, Department of Strategic Management and Public Policy at the School of Business and Public Management; Department of Political Science; and The Elliott School of International Affairs, The George Washington University, Washington, DC

Book Description
`This book is a good comprehensive text and comes highly recommended to anyone currently involved in, looking to get involved in, or just interested in environmental management, environmental accounting and reporting' -
Pacific Accounting Review
This is the long-awaited 2nd edition of the benchmark publication that helped shape the developing agenda of environmental accounting. This excellent new edition provides an overview of the subject ranging from environmental management to sustainability, and integrates the major advancements that have occurred since the first edition - in both research and practice. It introduces and explains environmental issues as they relate to accountants today.
This new work also places an increased emphasis on the emerging research literature in the field and reveals a consciousness of the difficulties of developing an environmental agenda in business. It makes an excellent stand-alone text for lower level students, a firm base from which the advanced student or researcher can explore research and more complex issues, and a useful guide for practitioners seeking to understand and implement environmental practice.
