Book Description
Conversations with Miller offers a personal and revealing account of one of the major playwrights of our time. Arthur Miller is revealed in deep and candid conversation with the highly regarded dramatic critic, Mel Gussow. In this series of interviews, which took place over 40 years, Miller is astonishingly forthcoming about his creative sources, his accomplishments and his disappointment; about his staunch resistance to the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950's; about his private life including his five-year marriage to Marilyn Monroe. The result is an intimate portrait of a cultural giant who is both refreshingly down to earth and a fiercely original writer and thinker.
Customer Reviews:
providing insight.......2003-03-13
This collection of a series of interviews will give anyone interested in Miller's plays insight into his themes and thought processes, and how his personal life has impacted on his writing. The conversations are engaging and thought-provoking.

A Good Look at the First Half of King's Career.......2003-12-23
This collection of interviews with and articles about Stephen King give a very detailed look at his early career. The latest interview was published in early 1989, while King was still working on The Dark Half.
There's a lot of ground covered here, but not all coverage is even. For instance, Stanley Kubrick's film version of The Shining is discussed frequently, first with King discussing how excited he is about the project (pre-release) and then how disappointed he was after the movie came out. King's own directorial project, Maximum Overdrive, gets similar coverage, as does his work as screenwriter for Creepshow. Some of King's work is strangely missing, though: The film Firestarter is discussed much more than the novel; The Dark Tower books (The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three) and The Talisman are mentioned only in passing. An article in Time Magazine where King is referred to as "the master of post-literate prose" is mentioned several times, but the article itself is absent.
The interviews are divided up into nine chapters (plus epilogue), covering his start, early years, "Going Hollywood," recent (late '80s) years, etc. Copyright details for each piece appear at the beginning of the book, but I think it would have been more helpful if they had appeared prior to each interview along with a brief bio of the interviewer (as many interject their own opinions and memories into the interviews and it would be nice to know who these people are).
King is portrayed in fairly glowing terms throughout Feast of Fear; a much franker version of this period of his life - including alcoholism and drug addiction - appears in King's autobiographical memoir, On Writing. Is King entirely truthful in his interview responses? No, but he is insightful - King admits in On Writing that he made up his stock response of writing everyday except for Christmas, the Fourth of July and his birthday, because you have to say *something* and it should at least be half clever. Nevertheless, even if Stephen King the brand-name-and-legend isn't the real deal, the man reflected in these pages is still a heck of an interesting guy with a lot to say about the creative process and celebrity.
And Now for the Main Course.......2003-11-18
Feast Of Fear: Conversations with Stephen King's main con is that it was published in 1989, and the modern master of horror, by my guesstimate has published at least between 20 - 25 works between then and now.
This volume is a series of interviews with Mr. King from 1974 to 1989 largely by people in the field. It is often set up in informal conversations with peers and other writers giving a sense of intimacy to the reader. Reading it I gained a whole new level of respect for King. Sure there were redundancies and repetitions in places where questions were subtly changed, but with the same general point, but King's answer's showed a level of class and sophistication that may take some non-fans by surprise. There was even some interviews which included George Romero giving the reader a bonus treat of hearing wit and wisdom from two people at the top of their mediums.
This book lets people know the man behind the author, and for me made me want to read/reread more King as stated it just lit up my respect for him like a Christmas tree.

Book Description
Arthur Miller clearly enjoys militantly civil conversation. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Miller in interview is his willingness to answer question after question with grace and substance, with a sense of social commitment and metaphysical curiosity.
These interviews complement the plays and his more formal and well-known theater essays, revealing his dramatic and aesthetic theories, his concern with language and structure, his awareness of the inner reality of his characters and how these concerns broaden to highlight universal social and metaphysical issues. Miller in conversation provides a unique insight into both the dramatic works and the man behind those works.
Through forty years of the best of Miller interviews, similar concerns surface, but with one crucial difference: the actor/audience barrier is minimized, and the listener is left with the delightful prospect of engaging Miller, not through Willy Loman or Kate Keller, or through critics "interpreting" the plays, but through the very person who reinvented so much of contemporary drama.
Customer Reviews:
From Miller's Own Mouth.......2004-04-30
This is a very helpful source for gaining Miller's biographical insights and perspectives. A handful of interviews are documented word-for-word, and they shed light on many topics, including the motivations behind Miller's plays, his own critiques of his works, and events of his life that shaped his person and his work.

Book Description
Here is the inimitable Henry Miller (1891-1980) speaking candidly about himself and his robust fiction--Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare. In this enticing collection he argues convincingly for the things that have mattered in his full and exhilarating life. He and his interviewers cover the range of his engrossing works that stirred obscenity charges, as well as his life as an expatriate, his loves and conquests, his goals, his beliefs, and his probing insights into the culture that produced him and repulsed him.
These conversations serve as a retrospective visit with one of America's most distinctively opinionated, most singularly identifiable, and most invigorating authors.

Book Description
Tales of life, death, and lettuce in a French garden.
The situation could not be simpler: two men, both in advancing years, conversing in a garden deep in the French countryside. One is an artist, the other his gardener. On finishing his work, the gardener enters the studio and looks over the artist's shoulder. As the artist draws, the gardener talks: about his youth, his family, his travels, his health, and, of course, the pleasures of gardening. Sometimes the artist responds, sometimes he just listens; but all the while, the bond between these two very different men is deepening. Their friendship produces many moments of dry humor, such as when the gardener visits the artist in Paris and brings an anvil along in his luggage. There are also moments of profundity as the two friends reflect on their own mortalityand the equally taxing question of whether a lettuce can be as beautiful as a painting.

Customer Reviews:
Reads like a novel.......2006-10-26
This is the best book I have read in the U. of Mississippi series of interviews with filmmakers.
The first interview catches Aldrich just after the start of his career, so the interviews proceed with the career, as opposed to just having him reflect back on things from years later. We see what Aldrich is doing and hear him talk about projects that never come to pass.
A few fascinating things emerge. He apparently never got over getting fired from "The Garment Jungle." Even when he is a success after "The Dirty Dozen," he still is bitter/regretful about that. Also, his relationship with Burt Lancaster, which seemed okay on the outside (they made about four films together) is revealed as contentious and mistrustful.
If you like Aldrich's films, you need to read this book. It will tell you things you never knew and will add to your appreciation of this man.

Book Description
Fred Zinnemann (1907-1997) was one of Hollywood's most honored directors. In a career that spanned fifty years, he won four Academy Awards and directed such classic movies as "From Here to Eternity," "A Man for All Seasons," "The Day of the Jackal," and "High Noon."
Covering thirty-three years of conversations (1964-1997), "Fred Zinnemann: Interviews" provides a revealing glimpse into the director's vision as he discusses in his cultivated, elegant voice his varied experiences as a filmmaker. He defends himself against charges that his films are too objective or unemotional. He reminisces about his experiences with independent director Robert Flaherty and his early years in the American studios and recounts his disappointment and frustration over his abortive attempt to film "Man's Fate." Filled with intelligent commentary and recollections about all of his important work, the interviews disclose an artist committed to his craft, his vision, and the human enterprise.
Despite the range of genres in which he worked --- the western, the musical, film noir, and the "social problem" film --- Zinnemann was aesthetically committed to social realism. Due in part to his training under Flaherty and his upbringing in Austria, where he witnessed firsthand the rise of fascism, Zinnemann was always drawn to stories that highlighted the testing of conscience in people caught up in a historical moment. World War II provided the backdrop to much of his work. As he put it, "I have always been concerned with the problem of the individual who struggles to preserve personal integrity and self-respect."

Customer Reviews:
For King-Fans a must.......2000-10-28
This is maybe the most interesting book about Stephen King available. If you want to know something about him, you have to read it, because you won't learn more anywhere else. Not even in his own 'On Writing' by the way.
Maybe it would be interesting too to read more actual interviews, but these one help a lot. Okay, it's not always that interesting, like in the conversation about his radio station and sometimes weird, like in the one about 'Maximum Overdrive' if you have seen it. And of course a lot of things are repeated.
But it's really a must for King-fans.
Insights from the King.......2000-08-21
this was a wonderful collection of interviews of Stephen King. It would be interesting to see another collection done, with some of the more recent interviews and thoughts from him.
I dont now.......2000-04-14
I havent red this book but it souns cool
So Good I Bought The TP, TC, & Limited Numbered Copies.......2000-02-11
In this collection of essays, both new Stephen King fans, and SK'ers alike can enjoy a unique, indepth and personal view into the mind of the world's greatest horror writer. In Bare Bones King does just that -- he Bares his Bones, showing us the reader what really goes on inside his head. You are taken down into a dark cavern that few men have traveled into and survived. (Well, at least literarily -- not literally). As stated above, I was so impressed and intrigued by these works that I bought all three copies available: the 1st edition paperback, the first edition hardcover, and number 588 of 1152 limited handnumbered copies. Truly a "missing link" in any King collection. If nothing else, Bare Bones is a "must-read".
