Customer Reviews:
love buena vista but.......2007-06-23
my review may be unfair, but, i ordered this book and was sent the sheet music
decoding Bolero-style Afro-cuban music.......2006-02-05
As a fan of Afro-Cuban music, this book allows insight into the complexity of rhythms, chords and words. The content is as authentic as it can be to the material on its CD (not included). The print is good and easy to read. The music? Great!! I only with it includes pages on the production of BVSC, maybe photos of artists or footnotes.
Nice photographic support to the book, but..........2002-08-16
I am a fan of Wim Wenders' work, and I loved the BVSC CD and the movie, but in all honesty, except for the intro by Wenders and the closing interview with Ry Cooder, the entire book basically consists of shots from the movie along with the dialogs by the BVSC stars and the lyrics to the songs they interpret, i.e. material that the movie and the CD already provide. Yes: I admit I had higher expectations with it. In any case, I have to say Ibrahim Ferrer's monologue toward the end, when they visit NYC for their performance at Carnegie Hall, is a very touching moment.
A photo album that depicts the key moments in the movie.......2002-03-19
I recently saw the movie Buena Vista Social Club for the first time and I liked it so much that I wanted to learn more about it. That's why I ordered this book.
At first, I was a little disappointed when I received the book and found out that some of the images were low-resolution digital scans. However, after reviewing the book as a whole, I really got to like it. There are quite a few large high-resolution images that more than compensate for their low-res counterparts.
The book is mainly a photo-album which includes the transcriptions of some of the dialogs and interviews from the movie, as well as the lyrics of some of the songs (all of them translated into English).
One of the only pieces of material in this book that are not an integral part of the movie is the foreword by Wim Wenders, where he describes his whole experience of going to Cuba to make the movie. Very, very interesting to read! The other two are an interview of Ry Cooder with Peter Kemper and the biographies of the musicians.
This book is good to have around when you are having a conversation about the movie with your friends. You'll find the photos and dialogs from all the key moments in the movie.
A "must" for BVSC fans and Cuban music enthusiasts!.......2000-08-04
Buena Vista Social Club is more a coffee table addition than a serious in-depth study, but will prove a 'must' for any prior fan of the Buena Vista Social Club and Cuban music in particular. Photos, film stills and text accompany first-person capsule sketches by the participants of the BVSC group in this companion book to the film.

Customer Reviews:
Before designing for developing countries refer to this book........2007-03-11
I'm suprised this book has not yet been reviewed, it's excellent. The quality of the chapters and case studies which occur throughout are consistently good and well edited, and the critiques and analysis help one to understand more than just the urban form. What I found particularly helpful was the attempt to examine policy and urban actions and then comment on the resultant the social, economic and environmental consequences. An example would be the case study of Curitiba, which highlighted that the sucess of this city was due to more than good transport infrastructure planning, but social policy and economic policy also played a major role. This book isn't a how to do it book and it also disputes some current western trends in urban design, highlighting also the need for climate awareness in countries which are not so energy reliant. The book is an academic book in that it substantiates it's statements with fact and good quality data, so the research is thorough but also quite particular.Given that the case studies, which in part also direct the outline of the book are quite particular about a particular place, it is not perhaps the easiest reading. I was taken by how wrong my conceptions for urban design in one of these stated countries was based on my western training and background before reading this book.If you were to embark on a project in one the countries this book discusses or even one in this region then I would highly recommend it. Again it is not a how to do it book, and does not deal with top down design strategies. It changed my design direction, understanding of the different problems these countries face and how this affects sustainable design.

Book Description
Rural planning is fundamental to the development of Third World countries and this book shows how effective planning of land use and natural resource management can provide jobs and lasting economic benefits. It is essential reading for development, planning, land use, agricultural and natural resource professionals in developing countries
It provides an international perspective on rural planning, focused on developing countries. It examines conventional development planning and innovative local planning approaches, drawing together lessons from recent experience of rural planning and land use. The authors examine past and current practice and ways that land use planning and management of natural resources can underpin sustainable local livelihoods.
They draw on case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America to present findings relevant throughout the developing world. The result is an essential resource for professionals in these areas and for all students and researchers studying them.
Book Description
The UN predicts that over the next twenty-five years nearly all population growth will be in the cities of the developing world. At current rates, sixty percent of the world’s total population will live in cities by 2030.
As the cities grow, so does the number of urban poor. Unemployment, hunger, and malnutrition are commonplace. In the big city, most of any cash income the poor might bring home goes to feeding themselves and staying alive; any food that does not have to be bought is a bonus. As a result, more and more people are attempting to grow at least some of their own food to supplement poor diets and meager incomes. But farming in the city — urban agriculture — is too often seen by municipalities as a problem to be eradicated rather than as a part of the solution to making the city and its environment more sustainable.
In fact, urban agriculture has a long history. Throughout the developing world, municipal policymakers are waking to the fact that properly managed agriculture can make a major contribution to a city’s food security. It also has potential to provide employment, improve the environment, and make productive use of vacant spaces within the city. More than twenty years ago, IDRC became the first international agency to formally support research on urban agriculture. This book reviews the research experience of IDRC and its partners, including local governments, into the issues surrounding urban agriculture, with a particular emphasis on the influence that research has had on government policies. It describes the growth of city networks in Africa and Latin America that focus on accommodating urban agriculture and improving the lot of urban food producers. And it offers specific recommendations aimed at helping policymakers at all levels of government to maximize the potential of urban agriculture. The book concludes with a vision of how such policies might transform cities in the near future.
This book serves as a focal point for an IDRC thematic Web site on urban agriculture: www.idrc.ca/in_focus_cities. The full text is available online and leads the reader into a virtual web of resources that explores two decades of research into this important issue.
Book Description
The 20th century witnessed a massive growth in urban populations. In 1990, one-third of the world's people lived in cities of one million or more. As a result, hunger and malnutrition are on the increase worldwide, as the global food system fails to satisfy the growing demand of the urban consumer.
For Hunger-Proof Cities is the first book to fully examine food security from an urban perspective. It examines existing local food systems and ways to improve the availability and accessibility of food for city dwellers. It looks at methods to improve community-supported agriculture and cooperation between urban and rural populations. It explores what existing marketing and distribution structures can do to improve accessibility and what the emerging forms of food-distribution systems are, and how they can contribute to alleviating hunger in the cities. Finally, the book discusses the underlying structures that create poverty and inequality and examines the role of emergency food systems, such as food banks. A French version will be available in 1999.

Introduced in Bolivia a little over a decade ago, social funds have become a key community-led poverty reduction tool. A departure from traditional government-sponsored approaches, social funds encourage communities and local institutions to take the lead in identifying and carrying out small-scale investments, generally in social infrastructure such as schools, health clinics, and small-scale water supply and sanitation. The social fund model has proved to be a dynamic, replicable approach, easily adapted and scaled up in diverse countries around the world. In Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia, social funds have now absorbed close to $10 billion in foreign and domestic financing. Despite their popularity, the effectiveness of social funds as a mechanism for improving welfare has remained largely unmeasured. This study is the first systematic cross-country impact evaluation of social funds using survey data and accepted evaluation methodologies. The research, carried out in Armenia, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, and Zambia, addresses four fundamental questions: Do social funds reach poor areas and poor households? Do social funds deliver high-quality, sustainable investments? Do social funds affect living standards? How cost-efficient are social funds and the investments they finance, compared with other delivery mechanisms? The result of important new World Bank research, this book will be of interest to social policy practitioners and analysts, to academics and students of development, and to anyone interested in current thinking on poverty reduction strategies.

Book Description
This book provides a framework for the design, implementation, and measurement of sustainable urban development in developing countries. It presents the findings of an AGS-sponsored project. Based on case studies in Johannesburg, Gabarone, and Santiago de Chile, the book identifies challenges and potentials for sustainable urban development and suggests alternative ways that governments, city-regions, communities, and planners can respond to these challenges. The introductory part highlights the problem of global urbanization, focusing on cities of sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. The design part includes a context/needs analysis followed by recommendations of broad frameworks for sustainable urban development. The implementation part looks at the institutional and policy framework and strategies necessary for sustainable urban development, while the measurement part deals with the required mechanisms and tools for evaluating sustainable urban development policy and strategies as well as the review of outcomes/impacts (indicators). This publication is of special interest for university researchers and students, international experts, and organizations for sustainable urban development in developing countries, but also practitioners from planning authorities worldwide.

Book Description
The brown agenda or urban environmental issues became an important part of the international policy agenda following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro, 1992). Urban environmental issues continue to remain a major challenge in the cities of developing countries. The World Bank strengthened its focus on urban environmental management with the adoption of this brown agenda as part of the Bank's urban livability program.
Urban Environment and Infrastructure reviews the World Bank's activities to improve urban environmental quality. It sets out the Bank's expanded brown agenda and emphasizes the crucial importance of infrastructure and environmental interventions in order to improve livability in cities in developing countries. The World Bank has more than US$12 billion worth of active commitments aimed at improving urban environmental quality. While the Bank's investments are directed at much needed basic environmental services especially for the urban poor, the challenge of improving urban environment or livability in large cities needs further attention. Increasing climate variability, its impacts, especially sea-level rise, and urban impacts of natural disasters are becoming more and more part of the daily challenges facing cities in the developing world, seventy percent of which are located on the coasts. The volume provides pragmatic recommendations on how to deal with the challenge of this expanded brown agenda.

Book Description
The most spectacular change in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last few decades has been the dramatic demographic shift from rural areas to cities. As a result, more than 50% of the city streets in the region have no names or addresses, and the problem is particularly acute in the poorest neighborhoods.
This book reviews the role of addressing within the array of urban management tools and explores the links between addressing and civic identity, urban information systems, support to municipal services, tax systems, land management and tenure issues, slum upgrading, support to concessionary services, and economic development. It outlines current and future applications, highlights practices in many African countries, and offers a methodological guide for implementing street addressing initiatives which is widely applicable in other parts of the world.

Book Description
This volume by urban planners and architects assesses the current state of play between urban theory, policy and architectural and planning practice in developing countries. It explains and criticises what is happening in cities in an era now dominated by neoliberal development policy, compares and contrasts the various policy and planning approaches, and explores how they are changing the role of architects, planners and other professionals. The contributors focus on the principal issues that exist in urban environmental strategy, the spatial restructuring of cities, and the attempts to foster more participation in urban programmes and management.
The originality of thought, the diversity of case material and the specific policy focus make this book an important contribution to the formulation of future urban strategies in the South.
