THE AFRICAN BATMAN?.......2007-08-18
THE BLACK PANTHER TIE IN WAS ONE I CHOSE TO BUY BASED PURELY ON A LIST HERE.VERY GLAD I DID.NOT A CRUCIAL PART OF THE STORY BUT GOOD TO SEE A NON AMERICAN STYLE STORY, EVEN IF NAMOR BRINGS US THAT ANGLE EVERY TIME HE POPS UP.WHICH IS A LOT, THIS IS NO EXCEPTION.PANTHER & STORM GO AROUND TRYING TO BE NICE TO EVERYONE ,BUT WHAT FUN WOULD THAT BE FOR A COMIC.NEVER KNOWN ABOUT BLACK PANTHER MUCH,BEING FAIRLY NEW TO COMICS AND ALL,BUT THIS SERIES WAS ALL ABOUT LEARNING THE PEOPLE OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.AND THAT I HAVE.HOPE NO-ONE IS OFFENDED BY MY BATMAN REFERENCE BUT COME ON.IF IT WAS DARK HOW WOULD A BAD GUY STEALING A WOMANS PURSE REALLY KNOW THE DIFFERENCE????ANYWAY,GREAT SUPRISE TIE IN FOR ITS STORY, ACTION AND THE ALL IMPORTANT POLITICAL SIDE WHICH IS REALLY WHAT THE WHOLE GIANT SERIES IS ABOUT.QUICK..TO THE PANTHER CAVE!!
Great "Civil War" Tie-In.......2007-07-30
While this tie-in to the "Civil War" event isn't entirely necessary to understand the main story, it's filled with scenes that expand upon the "Civil War" series and infuse it with some much-needed humanity in the form of the Black Panther and his wife Storm. Hudlin, the President of Entertainment for BET television, doesn't write wall-to-wall action, so his "Black Panther" series isn't everyone's cup of tea...it just happens to be mine.
Meh...Black Panther in the Civil War.......2007-06-08
I haven't been very impressed with Reginald Hudlin's relaunch of Black Panther thus far, and his Civil War tie-in doesn't so much either. Now that King T'Challa, AKA the Black Panther, has married Storm; the two embark on a planet wide (and even beyond) tour doing meet and greets with plenty of familiar faces. In America though, T'Challa sees the results of the superhuman Civil War that is ravaging both hero and villain alike, and has a talk with pro-registration leader Tony "Iron Man" Stark himself. Naturally Tony wants T'Challa on his side, but he finds it wiser to stay out of the struggle between Iron Man and Captain America as the Civil War rages to cataclysmic results. If you've read the main Civil War storyline by Mark Millar, then you no doubt already know what side Black Panther picks and what kind of impact he has on the events at hand. This Civil War tie-in really does nothing of the sort to expand much of anything, and Hudlin's story is honestly pretty boring. The artwork is pretty good throughout this TPB, but overall there isn't anything we haven't seen before, and there isn't anything really vital to the overall effect of the Civil War. All in all, Black Panther: Civil War may be worth a look for hardcore Black Panther fans or Civil War collectors who need every TPB tie-in, but this is better left on the shelf.
Book Description
According to two-dimensional semantics, the meaning of an expression involves two different "dimensions": one dimension involves reference and truth-conditions of a familiar sort, while the other dimension involves the way that reference and truth-conditions depend on the external world (for example, reference and truth-conditions might be held to depend on which individuals and substances are present in the world, or on which linguistic conventions are in place). A number of different two-dimensional frameworks have been developed, and these have been applied to a number of fundamental problems in philosophy: the nature of communication, the relation between the necessary and the a priori, the role of context in assertion, Frege's distinction between sense and reference, the contents of thought, and the mind-body problem. Manuel Garcia-Carpintero and Josep Macia present a selection of new essays by an outstanding international team, shedding fresh light both on foundational issues regarding two-dimensional semantics and on its specific applications. The volume will be the starting-point for future work on this approach to issues in philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics.

Book Description
From 1926 until her death in 1954, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacn, Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. During her convalescence from a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo began to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still-lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938 and enjoyed considerable success during the 40s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 80s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Portraits of an Icon is not another book featuring Kahlo's beloved, tortured self-portraits. Rather, it offers another kind of portrait of the artist, a means of seeing her through the eyes of those who surrounded her: modern masters of the camera such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Martin Munkacsi; leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle; and Kahlo's relatives, lovers, and friends, among them Guillermo Kahlo, Nicolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo. The images span Kahlo's life, beginning with a photograph of a self-possessed chubby four-year-old, her fists full of wilting roses, and ending with the image of an emaciated, wasted figure laying on her deathbed, dressed in pre-Columbian finery. They follow the artist's trajectory from precocious child to famous artist, bringing into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, the friend. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, a view into her collections, and some play with her pets. While many of these images provide us with a unique opportunity to glimpse the woman behind the facade, others, though less revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations--the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of her works of art.

I love Frida!.......2005-06-21
This is a must have for Kahlo fans out there. She's talented. She's beautiful. She's fierce.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Mystique finally finds out who the Quiet Man is. Once she has worked out this particular mystery, her nasty, sneaky, devious mind has to try and work out who she is most annoyed with.
Or, in other words, which side of the equation should she try and bump off. Seems ol' Chuck Xavier draws the short straw.
overall interesting story.......2006-07-11
I actually just read this last installment in the story and it wasn't nearly as good as the first two books, actually it was the most disappointing out the four books, but that being said its still falls in line with the complexity of mystiques character. I think that the review written by "comicscholar", mr. Kovacs sums it up best and desrcibes it better than I ever could. I think he is more familiar with the overall series. If you like x-men I still think that you will enjoy the final installment but it only works if you have read all four books in the correct order. The review written by VHS preowner is stupid, and out of curiousity, I read a number of his other reviews. In reviewing "Pirates of the Carribean, Dead mans chest" he has the stupidity to say that johnny Depp can't act" Depp is probably one of the most brilliant actors in hollywood today. He is an amazing actor and preowners inane remarks leads me to conclude that all his reviews are probably worthless; anyway, "Quiet" was an entertaining read and I still liked it although not as much as the first three installments.
an honest review.......2006-05-05
I started with this series from the beginning and enjoyed the first two volumes a great deal. Unfortunately, after those the story becomes less enthralling. Plot lines that were still going were wrapped up in ways that felt a little forced and the initial punch just wasn't there.
That being said, it was not that bad of a book. If I had not liked the first two volumes as much as a I did then I probably would have liked this one much more. You should definitely read the volumes in the right order as the plot is an espionage kind of thing with a lot of plot threads that would be hard ot folllow without reading their beginnings.
As for vhspreowner's review, it is ridiculous and should be deleted or ignored. I have stumbled onto so many trollish reviews from this guy I am starting to develop a vendetta. If he just picked up this volume then it would of course be difficult to understand anyone able to read the volume number could have figured that out. Although if you couldn't do that then the story would simply be way too complex as it was written for those above a first grade reading level.

Book Description
Pete Wisdom has a lot of fairies to kill. Yes, fairies are supposed to be nice and magical and charming, but they are currently attacking England. Hugo Award nominee Paul Cornell (BBC's Dr. Who and Robin Hood) brings you a sci-fi mini-series unlike anything you've seen before! Collects Wisdom #1-6
Customer Reviews:
Goofy, yet enjoyable.......2007-09-02
Interesting to say the least, Wisdom: Rudiments of Wisdom stars lower-tier mutant and former Excalibur member Pete Wisdom as his beloved Britain is under siege. Between hordes of murderous fairies, insane telepaths, and invading martians (yes, you read that right); Pete has his hands full to say the least. In between all the mayhem, Pete and his team (including Captain Midlands, the British version of Captain America, and a shape changing Skrull in the guise of John Lennon) make for easy laughs and thrills as the carnage piles upward. British writer Paul Cornell (writer of BBC's Doctor Who) churns everything along with a goofy rhythm that will leave you laughing out loud at some spots, while Trevor Hairsine provides some solid pencil work. Wisdom is good for what it is (and more enjoyable than many MAX mini's usually turn out being) and doesn't try to be anything more than that either. All in all, Wisdom: Rudiments of Wisdom is one of the goofier, and enjoyable, MAX mini's to come along in a while; and is definitely worth checking out for X-Men fans and MAX fans alike.

A Lucky Man.......2004-12-08
"Two Worlds: An Edinburgh Jewish Childhood" contains several interwoven stories, all suggested by the title itself: A tale of Diaspora Jewry, living its traditions among a foreign people, but a people who respected those traditions and treated the Jewish people well. It is a tender and loving personal portrait of Edinburgh, Scotland in the period between the First and Second World Wars. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it is the story of a boy becoming a man, a boy wrestling with the faith of his fathers, and a young man ultimately finding his own way through those troubled waters.
Daiches portrays his childhood in Edinburgh as one in which he moved freely between his Jewish and Scottish worlds. He states in his 1987 Foreward to the book "I was not between two worlds but equally at home in both. That was my good fortune, and I have never ceased to be grateful for it."
The book begins in 1919 with the move of the Daiches family to Edinburgh where David's father begins work as the rabbi of the Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation; and it ends with the death of his father, shortly after a final visit in December, 1944. In between, we follow David through his youth, his education in the schools of Edinburgh, summer vacations with the family in Fife with all its attendant pleasures and youthful temptations. David tells us how on one vacation his father made friends with Mr. Greig, a minister of the Church of Scotland, and how "...they would sit side by side at night talking of the differences and similarities between their two religions while the fragrant aroma of Balkan Sobranie floated over the Castle Wall."
As for so many young people whose attendance at College or University ushers in a sudden rush of freedom, his attendance at Edinburgh University brought to Daiches a freedom, not so much suppressed at home, but one expressed in new found ways, in new relationships, and in new feelings. Ultimately Daiches rejects his father's form of religion. But he is never more his father's son than he is in this. For as Daiches says, his father, who we learn was a formidable apologist for Orthodox Judaism, "...unwittingly destroyed for me in advance any line of defence to which I might retreat when I came to doubt the literal divine inspiration of the Bible and the Talmudic tradition. The illogicality of the Liberal Jewish position was demonstrated for me once and for all."
David Daiches' story of growing up, like the story of so many others, is one of joy, sadness, and a sweet melancholy. Is it a tragedy? Daiches says the story is tragic "...only if we read it too literally." Don't read it that way. David Daiches is a lucky man. He has so many wonderful memories. And I am very grateful that he shared them with me.
Anatomy of a Rabbinic Intermarriage.......2003-08-24
Starts off as a charming tale of the author's childhood in Scotland as the son of Edinburgh's Rabbi.
The author received an inadequate grounding in Judaism from his father, who somehow expected that his own synthesis between modernity and Orthodoxy would be instilled in his family by osmosis.
The author marries out of the faith.
A tragedy.
