Some were good, some were bad.......2003-09-17

I would give "The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror Tenth Annual Collection" 3 stars because when I read this book some of the stories really got my attention but some stories were too dull and never seemed to get anywhere and I would go onto the story without finishing the one I was reading. Some personal favorites of mine were Tanith Lee's "The Reason for not Going to the Ball", "The Last Rainbow" by Parke Godwin and Stephen Dedman's "Never Seen by Waking Eyes" although I enjoyed many more. But I was dissapointed upon reading the story by Neil Gaiman because I usually find his stories creative and chilling. I always love Thomas Canty's artwork on all the books he illustrates and on this collection the artwork is one of my favorite he's made because it is both grotesque and beautiful. And I just want to say to the other folks that wrote in other reviews for this book who were writing how horrible it is that they should just take another look and see how much work goes into those antholigies with the writers and editors and artists and publishers and they should think about what they are saying and hope they will be more appreciative for other books like this in the future. Bravo, Terri Windling! Bravo Ellen Datlow, Bravo Thomas Canty! I look forward to more of your collaboration antholigies in the future.

Pretentious and Overblown.......2002-12-04

Ohhhhh.....Where to begin? I'll start with co-editor Terri Windling. Her opening essay on the year in Fantasy was almost enough to make me hurl down the book in irritation. If she said "Magic Realism" one more time....I lost track at 37. Unbearable. Just unbearable. I have a pretty steadfast rule that, no matter how bad a book may be, I read EVERY SINGLE WORD. Every word. No matter what. I had to skim through Windling's essay, because it was either skim or put my fist through the wall. "Magic Realism. Magic Realism. Magic Realism." Ugh.

Ellen Datlow's essay is slightly more interesting, and the sections on Media and Comic Books were very well done. Now, on to the stories themselves.

I've read a few of the previous Year's Best volumes, and it always bothered me how the book slants towards Fantasy over Horror (Terri Winling is the Fantasy Editor, Ellen Datlow the Horror Editor), but this edition is WAY over the top. Out of 35 stories, Windling's name is on over twenty. Her tastes run towards oblique, overwritten, pretentious tripe, and strange poetry. One of her selections, Gerald Vizenor's Oshkiwiinag: Heartlines on the Trickster Express put me beyond the newfound sacrilige of skimming. I actually had to skip the remainder of the story after five endless, pointless pages. I have never read such strange shizznit in my whole life. I literally had NO idea what he was writing about. Ugh. Another Windling pick (Among The Handlers, by Michael Bishop) is endlessly long, written in an awful hillbilly dialect, and is neither Fantasy or Horror, but IS god-awful. I'll avoid Vizenor and Bishop like the plague, thanks to these stories. We also get other Windling-picked classics like Birthdream, (A poem about childbirth, not Horror or Fantasy, but also awful. If I wanted bad poems, I'd get a poetry book.) Caribe Magico, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (A travelogue. For God's sake, a travelogue! Not Horror, not Fantasy...but as Windling says...MAGIC REALISM! Code for "Pretentious story that makes no sense."), and Beckoning Nightframe by Terry Dowling, about a woman who is scared of her neighbor's open window. FOR 16 PAGES! UGH. Her only decent choice is Little Beauty's Wedding, by Chang Hwang. It's an unforgettable story.

Ellen Datlow fares better in her choices. The Secret Shih Tan (By Graham Masterson), Never Seen By Waking Eyes (By Stephen Dedman), and the grotesque Three Bears pastiche "Ursus Triad, Later" (By Kathe Koja & Barry N. Malzberg) are all incredible, and I'm glad to have discovered writers I wasn't familiar with, but the overall feeling I had when reading the book was one of irritation with the all-encompassing pretentiousness of the package. I'd say the stinky outweighed the good by 90%. I'm VERY sorry that I've already purchased the next four volumes....But at least I've learned to skim & skip!

Interesting, But Not Very Horrorific.......2001-06-15

Interesting collection of writers, some famous and some unknowns, but all in all not a real page turner. Some stories I couldn't even finish I got so bored. Some were so good I got goose pimples. Go figure.

The Theatre Student series is uneven at best: George Latshaw's Puppetry: the Ultimate Disguise represents the cream of the crop while Makeup and Masks is among the dregs. The makeup techniques shown here were outdated when the book was published long years ago. The photos--many of which are grainy--depict poorly-realized makeups. Perhaps the authors underestimated the abilities of high school students to create theatre: hardly the attitude to take when writing for teenagers. A poor addition to the literature. Skip this one

Seriously Biased.......2001-09-19

The tendency of this book to ridicule America (its history, its culture, its priorities, etc.) really calls into question the objectivity and political persuasion of its authors. Whether it's the destruction of the environment or world poverty, America and the American people are always to blame. We use too much energy; we don't share enough; blah blah blah. America does more to promote peace and economic development throughout the world than any other country. While the authors of this book don't seem to be so, I, for one, am PROUD to be an American

Look to the Lady examines the careers, talents, and styles of three women who were acknowledged, each in her time, as the greatest interpreter of Shakespeare's heroines: Sarah Siddons, Ellen Terry, and Judi Dench. In the eighteenth century, Siddons was celebrated for playing Shakespeare's tragic women in a heroic, even "sublime" style. Terry, who reigned over the late nineteenth-century stage, had a softer, "beautiful" style and is remembered best for her roles in Shakespeare's comedies. Dench, who still performs, has amassed a more varied résumé than either of her predecessors. Not only has Dench had the advantages of variety offered by film and television roles, says Russ McDonald, but she may also command a greater artistic range.

One of McDonald's interests is in the ways Shakespearean performance influences, and is influenced by, critical and popular appraisal of the works. He also discerns parallels and distinctions in the approaches of Siddons, Terry, and Dench to the vocation of acting—specifically to Lady Macbeth and other great Shakespearean roles. Look to the Lady also helps us to better understand the place and function of the theater in British national life and what constitutes "great acting" at various historical moments. Further, by examining across time the varied attitudes of actors, critics, and audiences toward Shakespearean texts and roles, McDonald offers insights into how external forces combine with the inherent appeal of the plays to keep them fresh and new centuries after they were first written and performed.

Ellen Terry (1847-1928) rose to fame as an actress in the 19th century, when her stage partnership with Henry Irving at Londons Lyceum Theatre drew capacity crowds. She was notorious for flaunting the moral code of her day, marrying three times - first, at 17, to the painter G F Watts (who sent her back to her parents after a few months with a sum of £300 a year so long as she shall lead a chaste life) - and then living with her lover, Edward Godwin by whom she had two illegitimate children. A perfectionist on stage, she was cruelly forced to continue to act beyond a point she found appropriate in order to earn enough money to support her children: Look at me, 61 and still doing one-night stands, she said to a friend. As her sight and memory worsened, and her partnership with Irving ended, her acting career closed. She reinvented herself as a lecturer, touring Britain and America speaking on Shakespeares heroines.

This book is the only one of twelve editions that I have read. It is absolutely amazing. Not only does it question our common place world but it bends, strechtes and recreates you mind. I am looking to buy the book so I can read it all and have the stories at my finger tips. I am also going to read the next editions. Try one story, you will be hooked!

ADD Kids are Just Like Everybody Else.......1999-10-15

Being a parent isn't easy, and learning that your child has an attention problem compounds your job. But Taking A.D.D to School introduces the topic of ADD and ADHD to parents along with their children. All children want to be a part of the group and be just like everybody else; having special needs or being singled out makes that pretty difficult.

I encourage you to read this book with your children, and perhaps pick up a copy for your child's classroom as well. Armed with the assurance that ADD kids are just the same as the rest of the group, your child will learn tolerance and understanding. Knowledge is power, and the more we can give our kids, the better prepared they will be to face the temptation to tease or scoff at others who are different than they are.

Reading Taking A.D.D to School to your children or students is a wonderful gift you can share. Buy one for yourself and another for a special parent or teacher in your life.
