Book Description

Spring 07 catalogue :

The history of gay and lesbian cinema is a storied one, and one that became much larger with the recent success of Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Transamerica. But the history of gay and lesbian filmmakers is its own story. In The View from Here, queer directors and screenwriters—some mainstream, others who work defiantly from the margins—speak passionately about the medium, in particular their personal experiences navigating through the often-cynical and cruel film industry. All of them offer fascinating anecdotes and opinions about cinema, and speak candidly about their attempts to combat studio apathy and demands of "the market" and still create films that are entertaining, engaging, and truthful.

Containing numerous black-and-white screen stills and production photos, The View from Here provides fascinating insight into the filmmaking process—a book for serious film fans and gay culture aficionados alike.

Filmmakers profiled include: John Waters (Pink Flamingos; Hairspray), Pedro Almodovar (Volver; Bad Education), Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho; Good Will Hunting), John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig & the Angry Inch; Shortbus), Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex; Happy Endings), Randal Kleiser (Grease), Don Mancini (the Chucky films), Kenneth Anger, Gregg Araki, Lea Pool, Wakefield Poole, Monika Treut, Rosa von Praunheim, and Canadian filmmakers such as John Greyson, Bruce LaBruce, Robert Lepage, Patricia Rozema, David Secter, Lynne Fernie, and Aerlyn Weissman.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining reading.......2007-07-25

It's impressive how the author seems to know all the right questions to ask -- the ones that elicit the most interesting story from each filmmaker covered in this book. Obviously Hays did his homework before each interview, because he asks about things I never knew I wanted to know.

What a selection of interviews. there are some unusual choices, from mainstream to eccentric to Oh My--! Each interview is preceded by an introduction that provides the context I needed to enjoy each interview regardless of whether I've heard of the subject (or seen the films).

I never knew there was such variety and such accomplishment in North American filmmaking. And, yes, now I have a long list of DVDs to rent.

Behind the Scenes

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

Gay and Lesbian films have come into their own more than ever since the releases of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Transamerica". It is the people who work behind the cameras that have made the difference and "The View from Here" carefully looks at them. Hays looks at directors and screenwriters--some of whom work in mainstream cinema and some who are working from the edges and gives us a personal look of what they went through to maneuver in the movie industry. Written in the form of personal interviews, we get a fascinating study as well as an in depth look at gay cinema. The book is laded with photographs from the films contained in the book as well as production stills.

Interviews are not always readable but in "The View from Here". They read quickly and are exceptionally informative. It is obvious that the author has done his research well and the result is a reference book for all who love the movies. Besides when a book has a really great picture of Divine on the cover, it has something to say.

Some of the filmmakers included as John Waters, Gregg Araki, Wakefield Poole, Rosa von Praunheim, and Bruce LaBruce. There are many others as well.

Reading the book is like taking the yellow brick road through gay film history. There are anecdotes and analyses, facts and interviews and random thoughts on our movies. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to know more about the history of gay/lesbian film and it is important to know about the people who shaped that aspect of our history. Gay film takes all forms and all genres and it is all here--trash, porn, realism, documentary. Indies, Hollywood, noir, and activism. Like our symbol, the rainbow flag, our movies are diverse and Hays includes the diversity of our community in his book. He gives us the voice of the filmmaker. He shows us the courage and the fortitude of the people that make these films happen and he inspires us and allows us to feel a sense of solidarity as well as perversity of which our century has established as virtues.

    Book Description

All That Hollywood Allows explores the representation of gender in popular Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s, the last decade in which film enjoyed a pivotal cultural position. Both a work of feminist film criticism and theory and an analysis of popular culture, this provocative book examines from a cultural studies perspective the top-grossing film melodramas of that decade, including A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, East of Eden, Imitation of Life, and Picnic.

Stereotypically viewed as a complacent and idyllic time, the 1950s were actually a period of dislocation and great social change as Americans struggled to regain their equilibrium in the wake of World War II. Jackie Byars argues that mass-media texts of the period, especially films, provide evidence of society's consuming preoccupation with the domestic sphere—the nuclear family and its values. The melodramas included in her study appeared in theaters just as women were leaving their homes for the workplace. Some films challenged and some reinforced previously sacrosanct gender roles. Byars shows how Hollywood melodramas participated in, interpreted, and extended societal debates concerning family structure, sexual divisions of labor, and gender roles.

Byars's readings of these films assess a variety of critical methodologies and approaches to textual analysis, some central to feminist film studies and some that previously have been bypassed by scholars in the field. She specifically questions the validity of readings grounded solely on the premises of psychoanalysis, arguing that the male norm inherent in the psychoanalytic viewpoint may well prevent us from hearing, let alone understanding, the female voices that make their way into the most patriarchal of films. Byars thus critiques earlier approaches to the study of women's films and offers fresh readings, emphasizing from several important perspectives the suppressed female voice.

          Book Description

“Ma! there’s nothing to do here!” complains the precocious protagonist of this rhyming tale set entirely in utero. It’s not exactly a scintillating experience spending nine months in your mother’s womb. You’re just stuck there at the end of that dumb bungee cord (a.k.a. the umbilical cord), with nothing whatsoever to do but slosh around. But, oh, the endless joys you have to look forward to as you listen to the tick-tock of ma’s happy heart clock and await that happy day when you finally come out to play.

                Book Description

Born in New Delhi in 1953, photographer Sunil Gupta grew up in Montreal before studying photography in New York and establishing himself as an artist and curator in London. His story unfolds in this artist's monograph, the first survey of his photography from over twenty-five years of work, drawing on eight major series of pictures and with his own narrative text. This is powerful autobiographical photography, both political and intimate, that addresses being a gay Indian man in Europe torn between cultures, in a form of "exile," and in a personal struggle with the HIV virus. A milestone in art's engagement with race and homosexuality, this book accompanies exhibitions of Gupta's work being shown across North America.

                        Book Description
