Book Description
When Bertensson and Leyda's 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of of the intensely private Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him. David Cannata's new introduction summarizes what has happened in Rachmaninoff scholarship since the book was first published.
Customer Reviews:
This book is excellent.......2002-05-23
I found this book extremely helpful and a joy to read. I have used it as a resource for a Rachmaninoff class that i am creating and also for my own pleasure. It spans through Rachmaninoff's life, going in-depth to look at glimpses of Rachmaninoff's life with family, and then meticulously explores his music career. It looks into what inspired him, his meetings with other famous composers, his performances, and includes many letters about his personal life that he wrote to his family and friends. Overall, an excellent look into the life of a composer about whom we do not know much.
A must-have for any Rachmaninoff lover........2001-11-28
This book is very thouroughly written, drawing on resources of Rachmaninoff's relatives, letters that Rachmaninoff himself wrote, and of personal interactions. It gives a glimpse into Rachmaninoff's private life, which very little is known about, and shows Rachmaninoff for the true musical genius that he is.
Book Description
Celebrate the unforgettable style of one of the world's most beautiful women. With an image both elusive and enduring, Sophia Loren--now in her mid-sixties--remains glamorous, sexy, poised, gifted with a remarkable physical presence, and yet surprisingly down-to-earth. Sumptuously illustrated with well over a hundred photographs, this fascinating "stylography" examines the many facets of the unique style of this international superstar. Through a study of her many film roles, her public appearances, the choices she has made in both her personal and professional lives, and through the words of those who have known and worked with her, uncover the many layers of Sophia Loren's mystique. Despite the various personae she has taken on--the force of nature, the Earth Mother, the siren, the diva, and the icon--Sophia Loren has consistently remained true to herself. Perhaps this is the secret as to why she has captivated men and women around the globe for decades.
Customer Reviews:
Bella Bella Bella!!!.......2006-02-16
Now around 70, Sophia Loren is still the world's most beautiful woman. Her exquisite poised classic charm is the one of a kind that only comes every few centuries. This book celebrates the distinctive beauty and style that has stayed alluring for half a century. Loren is a stand out still. In a world that only sees beauty as a physical expression ... Loren and her contemporaries (Catherine Deneuve, Sophie Marceau, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, etc)tell us that it is much much more. There is a priceless asset in poise, character, dignity, class, that no amount of plastic surgery can compensate for. Beauty is not about not making mistakes but it is about having the kind of self-respect to come out of it a stronger, better person. For all her childhood ostracism of being illigetimate in Catholic Italy during its facist phase, Loren has blossomed and risen above her early roots. One has to admire that despite an international sophisticated glamorous acting career ... Loren has managed to stay married for close to 50 years to her one and only spouse, and took her role as a mother seriously to her two sons. Rather than delegate motherhood to nannies and assistants, Loren made her family, in particular her children, a top priority. You have to respect that and see that beauty truly is what beauty does.
Classic Beauty is something one is born with..........2003-06-25
...Grace, Dignity and Humility is what separates one from everyone else. My own words after meeting and
observing the Legendary Icon through the years. "Sophia Style" captures many wonderful, minute flashes of her
incredible life experiences, along with the many era's that have made her who she is today. "Sophia Style" quite
adequately displays her Grace, Dignity, Humility, Class and Awesome Exotic Beauty. Beauty that exudes
deep from within, through the awesome one of a kind exotic Mediterranean bone structure. And beyond the
ageless olive complection and voluptuous features, casting a bright aura far ahead of her. She may be, for the
most part, reserved and to herself, but rises to the occasion of most gracious hospitality without hesitation. She
has no enemies and lives outside the hullabaloo of Hollywood amidst horse ranches in a tree shrouded Garden of
Eden she calls "La Concordia."
In just observing her relationship and interaction with her son Edoardo, I have learned what it is like to not only
truly be a parent, but a spiritual partner who actively participates in my children's lives.
I received "Sophia Style" a couple of years ago, after first meeting her some decades ago. In dealing with a
devastation within my own life, it was her words, wisdom and character that got me through when my own family
failed me. Sometimes I kept her book near me to remind me to keep rising above it all. It was acting with Grace,
Dignity and Humility that was inspired by her, that kept me from making incredibly horrible rash decisions.
At her Lifetime Achievement Awards in 1994, I insisted that she work again. She grasped me with both
hands in an incredible, yet most gracious way. And worked again she has, with five films since, including one
written and directed by Edoardo. And of course this book by Deirdre Donahue. Hopefully, there'll be many
more films, books and other treasures
to follow. Viva La Bella Donna!!
Affezionatissimo,
Guiseppe (Peppi) Turco
Beautiful Sophia Through The Years!.......2002-09-27
Sophia Loren is so incredibly beautiful that Deirdre Donohue almost had to create this book in order to celebrate it! From her humble Italian beginnings to her mature beauty of today, there are photographs of her through it all, plus text to tell about her colorful life. My favorite photos are: Diva (p. 70) intersection of image (p. 88), at the Oscars (p. 96) and 1964 color photo (p. 109). If you love Sophia, do not miss "Sophia Style"!
Style + content.......2001-09-08
Wow! Stylish photography and unseen glimpses of an exceptional beauty with a thesis that holds it all together. Recommended as a gift, a read, an adornment...it will propel the uninitiated into the video store for a reassessment of the great Loren!

Book Description
Winner of the Runciman Award for 1989. Justinian's great church in Constantinople was the culminating architectural achievement of late antiquity and the first great masterpiece of the Byzantine world. For over 900 years it was Christendom's grandest place of worship and, for most of this time, the seat of the Orthodox patriarch and a principal setting for imperial ceremonies. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, it was for almost 500 years one of the principal mosques of Istanbul. Its influence, both architecturally and liturgically, was widespread and enduring. Drawing on the work of Robert Van Nice for Dumbarton Oaks as well as on his own detailed observations and critical reading of the historical material, Rowland Mainstone's authoritative account of the church presents the genesis and development of its design and construction, the subsequent changes, and its character and influence. His evocative descriptions, complemented by specially prepared plans and drawings and superb photographs, provide a unique record of an unprecedentedly ambitious project. 305 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Almost a top-notch book.......2004-10-25
This is one of the most thorough books about the Hagia Sophia church ever printed. However, it lacked a few important things. First, it would be better as a hardcover. Second, it could have used some 3d renderings of what Justinian's church looked like before the Ottoman conquest. Finally, ALL the pictures are in BLACK AND WHITE! Still a good buy, but do your best to get it at a deal.
Excellent text, fine illustrations, but bad binding.......2001-03-13
Exaustively researched, excruciatingly detailed, and competently illustrated, this is still the best book I know on the subject, although an update to include color illustrations would much improve it. However, the paperback binding is sadly inadequate--my copy fell apart when I opened it...
I am writing about this, and this book was helpful.......2000-03-15
I am writing about the Hagia Sophia, and this book is very helpful for information.
a must for ecclesial, historical and architectural buffs........1998-10-23
A bit technical at times but very interesting overall. Excellent photos and elevations. Plus shows how the Church was originally appointed for Orthodox/Catholic Christian sacred use. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Good introduction for westerners.......2000-01-22
This book was my first Tai Chi book, and so I still believe it has some merit. I believe it brings up many valid points which will be very useful for American readers, and the book serves as a good introduction. However, it is an imperfect method in description of the postures and pales in comparison to books by masters of many years. The book I would most suggest to anyone is Complete Tai-Chi by Master Alfred Huang.

Book Description
Conceived as a series of journeys akin to those of saints or shamans,
Negotiating Rapture brings together the work of Francis Bacon,
Joseph Beuys, James Lee Byars, Lucio Fontana, Shirazeh Houshiary, Anselm
Kiefer, Agnes Martin, Bruce Nauman, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, and
Bill Viola. These artists are exhibited together in order to reveal
their diverse expressions of a shared longing: the basic and enduring
human urge to transcend the ordinary and experience the
sublime.Juxtaposed with a range of works by Old Masters and examples
from architecture, literature, and anthropology, the works in
Negotiating Rapture show how artists, as creators, move beyond
common experience to a state approaching religious ecstasy and how we,
as viewers, can in turn discover a deeper involvement in our own
humanity.
Major essays by Homi K. Bhabha, Georges Didi-Huberman, David Morgan, and
Lee Siegel, as well as a series of focused contributions by Yve-Alain
Bois, Wendy Doniger, Kenneth Frampton, Martin E. Marty, John Hallmark
Neff, Annemarie Schimmel, and Helen Tworkov, consider how rapture
resonates both in a cultural context and within the experience of a
single human being. A "Travel Guide to Negotiating Rapture,"
written by curators Richard Francis and Sophia Shaw, explores how each
artist in the exhibition has sought to define rapture and, by guiding
the viewer/reader, initiates scrutiny of transformative experiences.

Book Description
An up-to-date, practical aid for architects, engineers, clients, and anyone interested in the field of glass technology, this publication is essential as the paths of glass and architecture have never been as intertwined in the past as they are today. The dynamic fields of glass craft and industrial high-technology are generating new architectural constructions that require highly integrated solutions. Whether sustainable buildings or complex facade systems, the prerequisites for any such developments are high-performance materials.
Customer Reviews:
A guide to high-tech applications of glass.......2000-09-24
I bought the 1999 version of the book from Barcelona and made use of in my thesis research that is related to the topic of "Glass Surfaces in Architecture". The book edited by Behling consists of selected issues about glass production and its use in architecture with the latest innovations, which have already been discussed in the international conferences held in glasstec fair in Düsseldorf. It is beneficial to have such a selection that I would otherwise be unaware of the discussed issues about glass unless joining the conferences. The selection is edited under four topic as "Craft, Industry Facades", Structural Use of Glass", "Structural Experiments with Glass", and "Materials and Systems". The way organising the information and cases of glass seems very practical so that the necessary parts of the topics could be picked. Besides, the paragraphs were organised as interrelated with the illustrations, which also provide ease to read. The language is not too technical and but the technical information is clearly understood. Therefore, I like the book in general. Yet, one thing to criticise, it is could have been more concentrating on glass facade systems surface applications such as printing techniques that transform architectural appearance, to appeal my topic. Another thing might be that, the architectural examples could be more emphasised, even some buildings can be given with their drawings not only in details but also plans and sections.
