Book Description
'Hey, Reiner, you ought to write those things down,' his friends have said. At eighty, Carl Reiner is one of the best raconteurs on the planet. Rather than a full-blown autobio-graphy, he has chosen his favorite form-brief stories that capture the tone of his life. 'Sidney Bechet and His Jazz Band Meet Franz Kafka,' 'The Birth of the 2000 Year Old Man and His Attending Midwives,' 'Mary Tyler Moore Made Me Quake,' 'My First Best Job'-the titles of Reiner's pieces reveal the wit of his stories. His charming memoir will delight anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes look at five decades of Hollywood and television history.
Customer Reviews:
An Amusing but not Hilarious Memoir.......2006-10-19
Mr. Reiner is undoubtedly a funny man but the full force of his humor is not to be seen in My Anecdotal Life. It is a likable, amusing and easy reading book but the stories are sometimes obscure and the punchlines sometimes don't justify the build-up. The professional period that he is perhaps best known for, the Dick Van Dyke show era, is lightly covered -- much to my disappointment. Another flaw is that there is no index. Books like this name-drop and half the fun is to see who and who isn't mentioned. Sadly, there are no old photos either. As Mr. Reiner intimates, much of the book flows from many years of dinner party repartee. You will like this book but only the most devoted fans will love it.
wonderful, amusing read.......2005-08-02
This is a great book! It is easy reading and wonderfully entertaining. I rarely laugh out loud even with the funniest of books, but I did with this one. Carl Reiner has let quite an interesting life, if you are a fan of him (or even if you aren't) you will love this book. Pick it up if you are just looking for some entertaining stories written by a comic genius. I highly recommend it!
I love Carl Reiner.......2004-08-17
I had an advanced copy and went through it in two days. This book is very much worth it. My wife and I have been huge fans for years.
Mel Brooks was right.......2004-01-10
OK, so I didn't buy this book, I read it standing up at a bookstore (Barnes & Noble on State Street in Chicago), and one, just one, of the anecdotes was so funny that I was laughing so hard that my sides were actually hurting and I thought they were going to throw me out of the store. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but let's just call it the "Richard III" anecdote. And if you don't think it's the funniest thing you're ever read, -- well, then you have no sense of humor.
As disappointing as it is brief.......2004-01-08
Seeing that most of the reviews here are disappointing ones, I'm forced to agree. I expected more references to the heyday of classic television. While Carl must have a thousand stories about that era, he has evidently saved them for a different book. As for THESE anecdotes, I don't think I cracked a smile once. But I sure cracked a yawn.

Book Description
Filled with hundreds of tips, suggestions, and strategies, this guide offers practical medical solutions in clear language. It explains how to develop and maintain exercise and nutrition programs, manage symptoms, determine when to seek medical help, work effectively with doctors, properly use medications and minimize side effects, find community resources, discuss the illness with family and friends, and tailor social activities for particular conditions. Written by six medical professionals, this book encourages an individual approach to the process, with the ultimate goal being greater self-management. Originally based on a five-year study conducted at Stanford University with hundreds of volunteers, this work has grown to include the feedback of medical professionals and thousands of people with chronic conditions all over the world.
Customer Reviews:
I trained in this program and it helped tremendously.......2003-12-23
This book started the Self-Management approach to chronic illness. I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well.
Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments.
The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It's an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that "Living a Healthy Life" explains so well.
Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions..........2003-12-12
This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively
confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age.
The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.
Good resource for seniors.......2000-07-01
This book, written in a very simple, "self-help" style, seems to be geared to the senior citizen suffering from chronic illness and emphasizes developing and implementing management plans for exercise, diet, and medical care. While much of it is common sense, it does offer bulleted, structured outlines for communicating with medical professionals, managing medicines, planning for the future (and possibly greater physical degeneration), and most of all acknowledges the feelings and depression that often accompany chronic illness.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Healthy Living!!!.......2006-04-08
I am an author and a poet and during a leisure trip to Las Vegas, Nevada with my family, we were able to obtain a front row seat at the Gladys Knight Show. It was awesome. What a display of great talent! Reading her book is fascinating. The historical perspective of her story is amazing. She states how she believes diabetes eventually crept upon her, and why. However, she has it under control. The ways in which she blends her songs into her treatment plan is humbling. For example, she uses the heading in one section of the book, "Neither One Of Us Wants to Say Goodbye to the Cheeseburger," where she discusses fatty foods and how to avoid fast foods. The pictures of her family are wonderful. Her philosophy of dealing with positive people, exercising daily, and burning calories is a formula for success. The final section of the book deals with a variety of mouth-watering dishes and recipes. They are all healthy with her special blend of spices, herbs, and juices, with a low fat touch. This is an easy and relaxing book to read. It's a great treat to and for lowering one's blood sugar and staying healthy. I highly recommend it!!!
Thank you Mrs. Knight.......2001-12-24
At Home With Gladys Knight is a wonderful, inspiring book. I bought this book for my parents who both have diabetes. After years of trying to get them to follow doctor recommended diets it is a relief to have a book that inspires my parents to not only care about their diet, but their physical fitness as well.
Mrs. Knight has created a quick and easy read that is full of motivation. This book gets 5 stars in the Murphy household.

Customer Reviews:
Practical and helpful support.......2006-06-13
Karen Hargrave-Nykaza responded as you'd hope a mother of a child with a chronic illness would, by focusing all her energy on responding to her son's diagnosis of juvenile diabetes. She has collected her experiences into a book that helps parents in her situation get through the day without reinventing the wheel, giving examples of tip sheets, procedures, and her responses to the many crises that occur from the moment you receive a diagnosis. Karen now leads groups counseling new families with how to cope.

Customer Reviews:
"Living Life with Diabetes" by John Keeler.......2004-06-02
An excellent book which gives insight into the life of a person with diabetes. It is easy to understand both for people with and without diabetes. The book gives us Johns first hand experiences of coping with the day to day challenges of having diabetes. It is an accurate, well written, down-to-earth, humourous story. The book shows us that diabetes can never be a restriction for living life to the best. One of my first impressions when reading this book was: "Wow, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way". It contains a lot of practical tips and gives the reader reassurance, hope and a sense of happiness. Instead if asking "why me?" we end up asking ourselves "why not me?".
I would even recommend this book to members of the medical profession who work closely with people who have diabetes.
New insights!.......2004-04-23
I just recently finished reading this new book called "Living Life With Diabetes", by John Keeler. What an amazing book he wrote. My husband is a diabetic and afterreading this I understand so much more about him. I was brought into his world for just bit, but enough that I learned so much. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who is a diabetic, is married to a diabetic, have children who are diabetic or even if you just know anyone who does. Thank you John and Good Luck.

Customer Reviews:
Women and Diabetes:Staying Healthy in Body, Mind and Spirit.......2001-10-09
This book is not just about the nuts and bolts of diabetic management (blood sugar testing, diet, exercise). It deals with the emotional impact that diabetes has on the life of a woman. Because there are stories from women who have already "walked in my shoes", I felt less alone in dealing with this disease. There are "fill-in-the-blank" pages to help you identify people who can help you; to let you see where you are on the road to acceptance of being a diabetic. Diabetes affects all aspects of life and tight management is crucial to preventing or minimizing complications later. I highly recommend this book to any diabetic woman, whether she is newly diagnosed, or has been dealing with it for years. I would also recommend sharing this book with family and friends.
I thought this book was great for every woman with diabetes........1999-10-12
This is the first book I have read that totally and thoroughly goes over the different aspects of diabetes that only women face. The needs of men and women are totally different with regards to health issues--especially diabetes. I highly recommend this to every woman with diabetes--whether newly diagnosed or someone who has had the disease for years. It is informative and very informational, too.
