Dream Rides, Great Local Info and an Exceptional Read.......2003-05-08
I've just finished this book for the 3rd time. Each time I smile and dream about Colorado. I can smell the summer showers on the horizon. Now I know how to survive if I get caught again in one of those instant season changes from summer to winter. You know the type, that happen at about 10,000 feet, with a 50 degree temperature plummet in about 45 minutes, that leave you praying for a fleece and a quick decent.
Want to know about historical archaeological digs? Grizzly Bear Myths? Best place to find a burrito as big as your head? Pumas? Surely toxic ceramic-like mud? No???? You just want to know about trail riding? Well this is the book for that as well. Single and double tracks, wash boards, roads, the whole enchilada......mmmmm green chili. Who woulda thunk a trail guide would be so entertaining and yet so thorough? Buy this book now for any of the above reasons, or just buy it for the pure enjoyable read that it is.

This book has a personality lacking in most guidebooks. It is like having a local along on the ride with you. It is nice to see a mountain bike book by a Coloradan dedicated to Colorado mountain biking.

Great Reference for Beginners or Experts.......2002-08-18
I'm a begginermediate mountain biker and a weekend warrior so take this with the proverbial grain of salt. I have done several trails from the West Central section of this book, and had a 100% sucess rate with it. The the anecdotal decriptions are great, and they are followed by a blow-by-blow guide to the route he describes. Even with the detailed, step-by-step descriptions there are plenty of extras to inspire side trips, exploration, and customization to suite the level of riding experience.
Use common sense. Even though this book is only 3yrs old, markers disappear, signs are removed, trails are altered (sometimes by bulldozers), etc. Realize, these are details the author has no control over even though he has to include them at the time he rode the trail. I know of only a few authors who are considered omniscient (maybe One). As much as I like Mr. Kick's book, I don't think he's one of that number. This guide should always be supplimented with a good topo, and any maps that might be available from the local townships or organizations responsible for the trails described.

Great Book.......2004-05-24
This book describes a group games from low to high activity levels. It is for the young and old as well as the fit and infirm. It unites a group of people through play. The games are essentially non-competitive. Teachers, employers and individuals who give parties can use these innovative fun activities. The book has an overview which categorizes the games according to activity level, timing, number of people needed, cognitive attributes, physical demands as well as other elements.

Intriguing and Thorough Guide.......2002-08-10
Dennis Aprill is the male equivalent to Barbara McMartin in his narrative style. Like Ms. McMartin, he goes into practical detail in hiking equipment and studiously describes each hike, mentioning things most hikers might miss. It won't be long before he comes out with another edition. An excellent guide.

Although it is dated, and trails have changed since 2003 this book remains a must for NC bikers for its range of trails, readability, elevations. Sets a high standard for mountain biking books. Trails range from easy to hard. If I were to buy one book for NC trails this would be the one hands down.

I found this book to be a real comfort to my coming vacation.
The trail discriptions are right on, along with the Elevations made my selections easy. I can't wait to spend a week in the mountians of Northern Carolina..
The best N.C. mountain bike book I own........2003-06-03
If you're going to mountain bike N.C. you need to own this book. It's easily the best one I own. The maps, directions, and charts are great and easy to follow. The rides are varied with all skill levels included. And this guy Muth has a great writing style, loaded with pesonality. My only suggestion is that he includes Dupont when he revises. Thanks Timm!
Great trail guide. Great stories........2003-02-23
This is a biased review: I rode some of these trails with Timm while he was putting together the book. The book does a great job of communicating the care and enthusiasm he brought to the project (well, care in trail mapping - there were some impressive biffs). This book not only has a great selection of trails, but it's a fun read. By far the best guide to trails in North Carolina.
A must have guide.......2002-04-26
If you are going mountain biking in NC, you need this book. The information is excellent, with a lot of the book devoted to the awesome Pisgah National Forest. But almost as important, it is written with a passion for the ride like no other guide I've seen. This isn't a dry list of turns & mileage, but a colorful and helpful description of the entire trail. It's the kind of book that makes you want to ride.
