      Book Description

Rather than limit the minimal to being a type of visual art, the curators of Minimalisms: A Sign of the Times conceive of the minimal as a way of life, as a spirit that impregnates nearly the whole of modern culture and its surroundings. After an exhaustive overview of classic Minimalist works by Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Carl Andre, and Elsworth Kelly, Minimalisms looks further, at artworks by Andreas Gursky, Candida Hoffer, Richard Serra, Jean-Marc Bustamante, and Gunther Forg, architecture by Peter Zumthor, Dominique Perrault, Claus En Kaan, and Rafael Moneo, furniture designs by Donald Judd and Shiro Kuramate, and fashion designs by Anni Albers, Donna Karan, and Issey Miyaki. Linking them all is a simplicity of form and ornament, a technical precision, and the essential and concrete nature of structure.

      Book Description

Almost four years since its initial appearance, Hans Ibelings' essay on the new tendency towards abstract, neutral architecture has lost none of its relevance. His identification and examination of the last word in modern architecture of the post-war International Style stands strong in projects by OMA, Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, Herzog & de Meuron, and Toyo Ito, and is well understood in relation to one of the dominant forces of the present time: globalization. This enlarged edition of Supermodernism includes a new final chapter in which Ibelings charts the latest examples of supermodernism, as well as a revised introduction and conclusion in which he responds to the numerous reactions his provocative stance has triggered.

This is an essential text if one wishes to be involved in a contemporary discussion in architecture. It opposes the Jenck's iconic idealism. I am constantly referencing this text in graduate studies in architecture.

It would be a good idea, for some of the customer reviewers on here, if they first learned what reviewing books means. For example, the author of the immediately preceding review thinks this book is bad -- deserving only one star -- because the bookseller has not delivered it to him yet. How sad...

        Book Description

Jean Nouvel (Fumel, 1945) studied and started his working life in May 1968 in France. Nouvel was one of the founders of the Mars 1967 movement, which adopted a very critical position on the prevailing bureaucracy and legal anachronisms in architecture. In the early eighties, he won several competitions such as the one for the Institute of the Arab World in Paris and the social housing competition the French Government regularly organized at that time, and which led him to build the famous Nemausus blcoks in Nimes, along with Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart. After these projects, his international prestige grew and, in the nineties, he was responsible for projects such as Tours Congress Center, the Euralille Shopping Center, and the Cartier Foundation in Paris.

This attractive book traces the professional career of internationally renowned architect Jean Nouvel. By featuring 25 major projects, both built and unbuilt, particular themes and characteristics begin to emerge, such as Nouvel's sense of landscape and his fascination with transparency. This deluxe paperback edition includes over 180 full-color illustrations of Nouvel's projects, such as the Lyons Opera and the Cartier Foundation building in Paris, and is published in three languages side by side: English, French, and German.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting look at Jean Nouvel's work.......2002-03-25

This book is worth a look for anyone not acquainted with Jean Nouvel's work, or anyone wanting to get a better sense of his projects, philosophy, and aesthetic views. The images in this book are beautifully photographed (check the images on the Lyon Opera House). My one complaint about this book and many other monographs is that most of the concepts for the projects are left unexplained. It's hard to fully appreciate the work if the sense of space, and volume are hazy and unclear. It would be nice if some of Jean Nouvel's projects were documented with plans, eleveations, section cuts. But despite this fact, this book still holds my interest.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2001-06-29

This 206 pages reference book briefly gave us a glimpse of Jean Nouvel's accomplishment. The introduction told us of Jean's anti-establishment past, his evolution from embracing pop-culture (on the same wavelength as Robert Venturi) & subsequently, to tectonic architecture. Here, we started to appreciate his depth, his versatility, his vision in undertaking small & major projects alike; urban planning; residential, industrial, & commercial buildings. Some of the highlights would be the Opera House at Lyon, Cartier Building at Paris, Building at Berlin, The Arab World Institute, Paris. Towards the end of the book, there was a list of his principal projects & buildings from 1970 to 1996, his biography, & professionals that he is working with. It was a rather easy book to handle with plenty of pictures, & descriptions conveyed in 3 main languages: English, German, French respectively. For readers who want to read more about his latest works, perhaps, a new edition is waiting in the pipeline? Well-worth browsing through.

5 out of 5 stars Jean Nouvel's Revolutionary ideas in architecture.......1998-11-10

This is a very interesting book. It covers everything from Jean Nouvel's beginings in architecture, his aesthetic ideas and his influences. Then it explores some of Nouvel's most important projects such as the Lyons Opera House, the Lucerne Concert and Convention Center, etc. The book is written in French but it has the Germanand English translations in it. Very interesting book.

              Book Description

What is a singular object? An idea, a building, a color, a sentiment, a human being. Each in turn comes under scrutiny in this exhilarating dialogue between two of the most interesting thinkers working in philosophy and architecture today. From such singular objects, Jean Baudrillard and Jean Nouvel move on to fundamental problems of politics, identity, and aesthetics as their exchange becomes an imaginative exploration of the possibilities of modern architecture and the future of modern life.

Among the topics the two speakers take up are the city of tomorrow and the ideal of transparency, the gentrification of New York City and Frank Gehry's surprising Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. As Nouvel prompts Baudrillard to reflect on some of his signature concepts (the virtual, transparency, fatal strategies, oblivion, and seduction, among others), the confrontation between such philosophical concerns and the specificity of architecture gives rise to novel and striking formulations-and a new way of establishing and understanding the connections between the practitioner and the philosopher, the object and the idea. This wide-ranging conversation builds a bridge between the fields of architecture and philosophy. At the same time it offers readers an intimate view of the meeting of objects and ideas in which the imagined, constructed, and inhabited environment is endlessly changing, forever evolving.

The philosopher and writer Jean Baudrillard is one of the most influential thinkers of his generation and has taught at several universities around the world. His best-known works in English are The Transparency of Evil (1993), Simulacra and Simulation (1994), The Gulf War Did Not Take Place (1995), and The Vital Illusion (2001). Jean Nouvel, an architect of international renown, designed the Arab World Institute in Paris and the Hotel Broadway, currently being constructed in New York City. He is recipient of France's highest architecture award, the Grand Prix d'Architecture, and is the author of Present and Futures: Architecture in Cities (1997).

Robert Bononno, a translator and teacher, lives in New York City. He received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for translating the forthcoming Isabelle Eberhardt: Letters and Journals.

Since his stunning Institut du Monde Arabe opened in Paris in 1987, French architect Jean Nouvel has designed widely published buildings throughout Europe. This superbly illustrated volume--the first book to be published on Nouvel since the establishment of his new firm, Architectures Jean Nouvel--features approximately twenty-five built and forthcoming projects, including his most important commission to date: his Concert Hall in Lucerne, Switzerland, scheduled to open in August 1998.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A must read for understanding Nouvel.......2001-06-28

The book is simple and direct in its format and writing, yet it touches upon some of the most poignant themes in Nouvel's architecture, such as Light, Colour, Grids and Details, as well as an outlook towards the future of architecture. Instead of a boring chronology of the works these become the main chapters of the book, and take on several buildings that are representative of these essential themes. The squarish format of the book with full page colour pictures, details and architectural plans, make it both pleasent to read and entertaining to simply flip through.

A few interviews or writings of Nouvel could surely have been added, for the more academic minded; but basically the book is an inescapable artefact in understanding the passion, simplicity and beauty of Nouvel's architecture.

4 out of 5 stars He is a very important arc. and this book explains why........1999-11-05

Jean Nouvel is a very important person not only for French architecture, but also for Europian architecture. This book explains succesfully why he is so important. The price of the book is not much because of its quality. But more drawings are expected. more drawings.

The Great Irish diaspora that began in the 1840s with the potato famine soon saw the island's population of 8 million reduced to less than 4 million. The process continued well into the 20th century, and has only finally been reversed with the arrival of tourism in the West of Ireland. In Hungry for Home, Cole Moreton traces one of the last of those tragic emigration stories, from one of the very remotest places in the West: Great Blasket, off the Dingle peninsula in County Kerry. The last chapter in the ancient history of the Blaskets began on Christmas Eve 1946, when a young man on the island, Seainin ("little Sean"), collapsed in bed with a terrible headache. There was no doctor, no policeman, not even a priest on the island to help. The only telephone was down. And on Christmas Day, Seainin died, "with his aunt whispering the Act of Contrition into a dead ear." And with that, the islanders realized that their lives on Blasket were no longer tenable. It is the kind of story that has been told before, and by natives of the islands as well, in their unique, poetic style: in Peig Sayers's memoirs, for instance, or Maurice O'Sullivan's Twenty Years A-Growing. But Morton's account is equally worth reading, imaginative and sensitively written, as it follows the O Cearna family all the way from Blasket to the mainland, and eventually to America, the New World. It is pleasing, too, that the author does not pretend to some mythical Irish ancestry of his own, as is so fashionable nowadays with politicians and creatives on both sides of the Atlantic. Instead, he states clearly that he is neither American nor Irish, but comes from East London. Good for him. --Christopher Hart, Amazon.co.uk

                Book Description

From ancient times until 1953, when dramatic events forced them to evacuate, the people of the remote Blasket Islands off the southwest coast of Ireland led a medieval way of life, speaking a pure form of Irish and gathering by turf fires to hear tales handed down from ancient times. Cole Moreton tells the story of the Blaskets through the eyes of the Kearney family, who lived there for generations until 1947 when they paid a terrible price for their isolation-a young man's life. Moreton discovers a few survivors still alive within sight of the Great Blasket, but most had left Ireland for America, settling in Massachusetts.

Hungry for Home is a beautifully written and gripping account of a quest for a vanished people, and the Kearneys' incredible journey into the twentieth century is "a moving, atmospheric testament to the mythic lure of home." (Entertainment Weekly).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical account of life on the Great Blasket Island.......2007-06-13

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author transports you to the island with his descriptive text that is not overblown with hyperbole. I feel like I know the folks he wrote about, like they're family. I highly recommed this book-- another slice of Irish history.

5 out of 5 stars a rare glimpse of something beautiful.......2004-08-04

Times change and people have to adapt or leave. This author takes the reader with him as he visits those who lived on the Blasket Islands at the westernmost point of Ireland before it was abandoned. Neither an Irishman nor an American, Mr. Moreton gets inside the heart of islanders as he tries to retrace the steps taken by those who left for America to find a better life and those who were left behind. The small villages of the Dingle Peninsula come to life through his narration and you feel you are there, listening to voices from a past that is harsh and cruel yet beautiful in its life struggles. This is a book to read both before and after a trip to Ireland, or if you have Irish ancestry and want to see inside a window to your family history.

                5 out of 5 stars A Deep Yearning.......2002-07-30

The people of the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Kerry in Ireland, became famous for their storytelling (Twenty Years A-Growing, Peig, and The Islandman), for the purity of their Gaelic and their old Irish culture, and ultimately for the tragic removal of the dwindling population to the mainland. Cole Moreton, in 1998, began researching the history of this removal, digging up old newspaper stories, governmental records, and speaking to the few remaining living Islanders. It's a wonderful, sad, beautifully-written tale, never shrinking from the awful bits, and I came away from it yearning for a homeplace for which I could feel so deeply. (The western suburbs of Chicago just don't cut it...)

5 out of 5 stars Blasket Family History.......2001-01-03

I read in the Springfield Daily News that an author had written a bookabout life on the Blasket Islands. This tweaked my curiosity becausemy mother's family was from the Blaskets. I mentioned this to myparents who were trying to find a copy of the book. I found 'Hungryfor Home' and ordered a copy for each of us.

I was stunned to findthat the book was about my second cousins. The book vividly describeswhat life on the Blasket Islands was like in the times of prosperitythrough the times of despair. It documents the circumstances thatlead to the evacuation of the island, the journey to America and thelifestyle waiting in America. Those of us enjoying the prosperity ourparents and grandparents made possible should read this book andappreciate the challenges they overcame so that we may have thelifestyle we now take for granted.

This book will be in my familylibrary for generations to come. I thank Cole Moreton for doing theresearch and writing this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Imagery..........2000-10-17

This is a wonderfully written book that captures the beauty of the Irish west coast, the personalities of a unique population of people and a connection to the Irish of America. A great old 1934 documentary called 'Man of Aran', although filmed in Galway, captures on film how the good people of the Blaskets would have lived and worked. Cole Moreton obviously put his heart and soul into researching and writing this story and I look forward to his future projects.

                      Book Description

The author recounts the highlights and disappointments of trying to live a more nature-friendly life close to the land. In a series of fireside tales he talks about wild animals, family pets, simple housing, natural foods-and the daily challenges of raising and home schooling four children in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies without phone, TV, electricity or running water.

4 out of 5 stars Take Me Home , Mr. Hungry Wolf.......2005-02-25

Moutain Home was a pleasant little book about a family living in the Canadian Rockies as it said, but something was missing. I felt badly, which was good, about the most well written parts of the book. Such as the one about the loss of the family dog, Tippy. There were other stories about animals and I am an animal person and have lived around some large animals. He told some good ones. The rest of the book was accurate and there, but more like a daily, weekly or event journal. The emotional impact was missing. I was looking for it on the trek across the Mountains to the gathering using an outdated map. Not there either. But I think what really got me was Mom. Yup, I saw her in pictures, and heard a few peeps about one thing or another, but not enough.

If you are going to have a Mountain Home and you start out with three children, one barely a month old, where did the next one come from? Was it born at home? What was Mom doing all this time? How does she spend her time? How does she feel about it? Does she get lonely being the only female over the age of childhood? Things like this would have made the book more interesting. And the kids. How old were they when they began to chop wood? What did they do for fun? What toys did they have?

So why 4 stars. Here is a man trying to raise 4 children in the Canadian Rockies. Both he and his wife are of Native American background. They home school their kids. Teach them the ways of their ancestors(Even though he has a Swiss father and I believe grew up in Europe.)They build, borrow or trade for what they need and finally he turns to writing to supplement their income. Now, that's something to read about, even if I don't appreciate his style of writing. It's also something to applaude, since all of his children have been able to continue their choosen education, travel worldwide, and enjoy experiences that very few of their peers would have dreamed possible.
