Confluences: The Design and Realization of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall

Book Description
The graceful curves of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles are familiar to anyone interested in contemporary architecture or the work of this great master. They are also famous, if not infamous, to the ironworkers faced with the challenge of building them. With a building skin stretched tight and tolerances shaved to a thousandth of an inch, there was simply no room for typical industry standards. A new breed of ironworker was required, one who relies on modern tools like lasers, yet whose muscular forms wielding hammers hundreds of feet above the ground testify still to the great unchanging tradition of their trade.
Photographer Gil Garcetti had unparalleled free access to the construction site. The personal relationships he developed with the workers over the course of many months and his admiration for their artistry are evident in these moving portraits. Garcetti's evocative images, reproduced in rich duotones, bring to life the romantic ideal of the heavy industry.

Wait a Minute.......2003-09-16
Michael Webb is arcitectural critic for a magazine owned by the publisher of Garcetti's book. Fair's fair.
This is a nice book, but the photography is well, mediocre. The building is astounding.
Iron: Erecting the Walt Disney Concert Hall.......2003-04-11
In his foreword, Frank Gehry calls ironworkers "the forgotten heroes of architecture," and this book celebrates their courage and skill. Nobody who saw the structural frame going up on Grand Avenue will forget its raw beauty, but most of the bones were covered in a shimmering skin a year before the hall opened. Garcetti, better known as the former DA of Los Angeles County, has captured the physicality of the work in his photos, and in the words of the people who did it. Their pride and solidarity are inspiring. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
Wonderful and Uncommon View of Iron Construction Today.......2003-02-24
There were only a few architectural drawings of The Disney in the back of the book: most of this photographic tour de force deals with the iron works, the skeleton of the building. After paging through this entire book, which is on display for sale at the historic Lummis Home off the Avenue 43 exit of the Pasadena Freeway, I had a new appreciation of the new Disney Concert Hall, which I had photographed under contruction against the backdrop of a thunderstorm.
Garcetti takes you close to the massive lattice of ironwork that underlies the curvaceous and apparently delicate hall. "Lattice" , "Skeleton", "frame", none of these words capture in their sense of mere adumbration the massiveness of the iron underneath. Can I say it simply? There's really a lot. Just what you're looking for in a book entitled "Iron."
Garcetti does a great job of capturing the workers, too, with many closeup shots of them as people that really bring out their essential happiness. There's a sign of their union hall, and the wonderful holiday shot of the christmas tree being lifted up to the top on a huge steel beam.
Also shown are some huge ironworking tools.
If you're fascinated with the state of the art in iron-based construction today, I'd say this book is for you.
Something else to remember -- once a building is built, you'll never be able to take photographs of it under construction again. It may sound trivial to say it that way, but after reading this book you probably won't think so.

While conventional marketing can help create public awareness, social marketing identifies and overcomes barriers to long-lasting behavior change. This ground-breaking book is the primary resource for the emerging new field of community-based social marketing, and an invaluable guide for anyone involved in designing public education programs with the goal of promoting sustainable behavior, from recycling and energy efficiency, to alternative transportation.

The Community-Based Social Marketing Primer.......2005-10-10
I don't know if McKenzie-Mohr coined the buzz-terms used in Community-based Social Marketing, but he covers them (at the introductory level) completely in this book. Case studies and personal experiences offer practical examples to the lingo commonly used in CBSM, plus plenty of articles are referenced for further reading. If you've heard about "Prompts" and "Norms" associated with CBSM and need to know what everyone's talking about, this is a great place to start.

Book Description
One of the most important issues facing humanity today is the prospect of global climate change, brought about primarily by our prolific energy use and heavy dependence on fossil fuels. Fueling Our Future: An Introduction to Sustainable Energy provides a concise overview of current energy demand and supply patterns. It presents a balanced view of how our reliance on fossil fuels can be changed over time so that we have a much more sustainable energy system in the near future. Written in a non-technical and accessible style, the book will appeal to a wide range of readers without scientific backgrounds.
Customer Reviews:
Great Overview.......2007-07-07
This book hits all the high points of the issues present and future. It doesn't go into any one area in great detail, so it's a true overview. There are lots of charts and graphs so be prepared for these, but you don't need a college education to understand it. After you finish it, you'll understand the big picture just fine. It covers oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind and biomass (ethanol). I wish it were a big longer and went into more detail, especially on ethanol. It has a little coverage of global warming issues, but not enough to really teach you much if you're just aware of the issue.
Be sure to get the paperback version, which costs about 1/4 of what the hardback edition goes for! It's a very good read and I enjoyed it.

An incredible book.......2007-03-26
This book is absolutely amazing!!! The way it covers such complexity in such simple terms - with information that our children's generation MUST know - this is a must read (for both children and adults). My middle school science students are mesmerized by this book year after year, and it has lead them over and over to service learning projects. This book is definitely worth reading and owning.

Book Description
This book draws upon data and theories from economics, political science, anthropology, demography, and environmental studies to provide a broad interdisciplinary overview of the Third World. A brief history shows how the expansion of Europe in the 15th century created dependencies in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The Third World is shown to be not a "natural" or innate phenomenon, but a consequence of its relationship to the First World that involved economic dependency, rapid population growth, inflated and internationally supplied militaries, and governments trying to provide attractive investment climates for huge multinational corporations. Human rights violations, environmental degradation, the demographic transition, traditional agriculture, world markets, and export policies are examined in a balanced theoretical approach which is aimed at a synthesis of modernization and dependency approaches.
