Introduction to Digital Audio Coding and Standards provides a detailed introduction to the methods, implementations, and official standards of state-of-the-art audio coding technology. In the book, the theory and implementation of each of the basic coder building blocks is addressed. The building blocks are then fit together into a full coder and the reader is shown how to judge the performance of such a coder. Finally, the authors discuss the features, choices, and performance of the main state-of-the-art coders defined in the ISO/IEC MPEG and HDTV standards and in commercial use today.
The ultimate goal of this book is to present the reader with a solid enough understanding of the major issues in the theory and implementation of perceptual audio coders that they are able to build their own simple audio codec. There is no other source available where a non-professional has access to the true secrets of audio coding.
Introduction to Digital Audio Coding and Standards is based on a graduate course at Stanford University going into its 7th year. The subject material has been fine-tuned through this process to be accessible to readers of vastly differing backgrounds, levels of preparation, and interests. Exercises that apply the concepts covered are included at the end of each chapter.

Only book which consolidates Audio coding & Standards.......2004-06-22

This book describes the basic details and the Signal Processing behind the Audio compression. It also describes PQMF and MDCT in continuation which is rare in books. Almost all the standard audio codecs are described with comparisons. I am delighted to read the book. At least my search end with this book on this topic. After getting this book, I need not look into IEEE & AES papers. For Audio engineers working on this domain should read this book to have a complete picture and overview of the technology and the domain.

Not satisfying for a nerd like myself..........2004-02-24

The book gives a good review of the historical development of audio coding standards with emphasis on ISO. Generally speaking it is well written, but the technical details as well as theoretical aspects are frankly, quite superficial; therefore it is not satisfying for a (proud) nerd like myself. If one's goal is to implement a program to handle the MP3 bitstream, for instance, then the book does not help. If one's goal is to design a new filter bank to improve the MP3 coder, then the book does not help either. However, it is recommended for beginners to get a flavor of the audio coding field.

Touching the core mechanisms underlying digital audio codec........2004-01-18

For a long time in my school life and now as a audio engineer I look forward to this kind of book.
MPEG Audio or AC3 audio standard is rather simple, but the syntax and decoding procedures imply considerably complex algorithms have been included there.
This book explains related theorys - for example filterbanks in detail, psychoacoustics, entropy coding, etc - concretely and expertly. She(Bosi) was one of the leading members in making MPEG Audio Standards.
Strongly recommendable!

First comprehensible book on the topic.......2003-03-14

This is a 'reference' book for anyone interested in how modern perceptual audio coders work. It is very well written, and complete.

When most of the class was buying spain's IORTV translated fourth edition at retailed price 32 euros I recieve it from New Zeland just beneath my feet a few thosand miles away and upside down, the 38 euros fifth edition. Simply outstanding, these days the latest edition matters, specially on Sound and Recording.

Not a beginner's text at all!!!.......2007-02-27

I teach a recording technology class at a community college, and we selected this book as a text based on the claims that it was a good beginner's manual. It is quite the opposite-- by the second page, the authors are already throwing in equasions to represent the relationship between the frequency and wavelength of a sound-- crazy! The book is written by engineers, for engineers, and assumes that the reader is already well-read in electronics, physics, and advanced math! Also know that the work is British-- so many of the terminologies are different than what we use in the States. Proximity effect is "bass tip-up". Shotgun mics are "rifle mics". TRS plugs are "GPO" plugs, etc. The discussion of mixing boards focuses immediately on features found on very high-end studio boards, not the equipment a beginner would have access to. The discussion of impedance focuses on how to represent values mathematically, rather than clearly explaining what is meant by "impedance" and why it is important. This book has ended up being absolutely useless as a beginner's text, and the publisher should not be representing it as such. We are abandoning it for something more useful to students.

The President would not say Donde.......2006-02-17

This course is an odd mixture of formal and colloquial language and is too much Lisbon centred. It is full of colloquialisms like bica for black coffe and the like, you use in Lisbon but not everywhere in the country, let alone other Portuguese speaking countries. Pronunciation is not always the best standard. Donde is something careful speakers do not say, they say De onde (this means from where or where from in a question). At the other end of the scale you have very careful speech, like that of the President of Portugal, too advanced for a beginners course. This is neither a good beginners course nor a suitable advanced one. I would not use it with my students (I teach evening classes).

Needs Revision.......2002-05-10

This book needs to be edited and revised so that the language presented flows on a smoother gradient from simple to complex. It begins very simply and ends with a story containing a great deal of grammatical complexity, most of which has not been explained or presented. Also, it is impossible with the data given in the course to do some of the exercises. I found it very frustrating. Its greatest feature, however, is Charley Jones as a native speaker.

Learn the sounds.......1998-10-15

This is a great way to learn how the sounds of the language should be. One of the hard points about the language is trying to understand how the words should sound or be pronounced like. This tape helps you in learning the language and speaking it correctly. If you want to learn more about the language, this is the tape series you need.
