5 out of 5 stars Great fun! And educational too.......2004-09-10

A result of Award winning photojournalist Louie Psihoyos' three-year field trip to the world's major dinosaur fossil sites, this oversized book, written with frequent collaborator John Knoebber, is a well-organized, energetic, stimulating, amusing and gorgeously illustrated trek through prehistory.

Accompanied by the bones of famous fossil hunter Edward Drinker Cope (you'll just have to read the book), Psihoyos visits the world's prominent paleontologists, lends a hand when asked and lets them talk for themselves.

The book is organized loosely by time periods, beginning with an introduction to the history of dinosaur hunting and concluding, cleverly, with opinionated statements from all the scientists on "What killed the dinosaurs?"

In between are colorful visits to major museums and field sites, lively discussions of the theories of warm-bloodedness, dinosaur physiology and evolution and the evidence to be found in tracks, scat and site environments.

Psihoyos' crisp, humorous style is reminiscent of the best of personal journalism - an irreverence for academic stodginess and a participatory flair - mixed with a deep respect for expertise and avid curiosity. His photographs are complemented by paintings and maps showing fossil sites.

4 out of 5 stars impish and wonderful.......2001-05-07

This book is an original, combining the stories of discoverers, hard science, and masterful photography. It is a true feast, leavened by odd humor and genuine love of the subject. For example, there is a section on coprolites - petrified dino scat - that goes into what they are revealing about the ecology of the dino era. In addition, it features a lovely photo of a smiling scientist, as she preside over her coprolites like a baker advertising her wares: it is funny, informative, artististic. The stories in it are also fascinating, telling of their quirky personalities, inexplicable talents, and fanatical drive.

Reading it helped me to re-live my childhood love of these great and mysterious beasts as well as to update my knowledge on the state of the art today. Now I am introducing my children to them through this book.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful piece of photojournalism.......2000-08-14

Psihoyos, a photographer for National Geographic, has written a tremendous book about dinosaurs as we understand them today. Central to the book, of course, are Psihoyos' terrific photographs: Of fossils in museums, of individuals in their workplaces, of the beautiful landscapes to which paleontologists travel to search for bones, and of the bones themselves in varying states of discovery and repair. All by itself, this book gives you a deep respect for what really good photographers can accomplish with their craft.

Psihoyos also turns out to be a lively and witty writer, and the book provides a good general background on what we understand of dinosaurs and how they lived, as well as a history of dinosaur hunters dating back to the mid-19th century. I've been a casual "fan" of dinosaurs since childhood, and much of what's related here was completely unknown to me. Psihoyos outlines several of the controversies in the history of dinosaur digging, including the discovery of the reptile-bird archaeopterix, and the wars between the two great bone hunters of the late 19th century.

Along the way he also caught a few big breaks, such as discovering that there was no "type specimen" (defining example) for homo sapiens (humans), as well as getting caught up in the Tyrannosaur Sue controversy which resulted in lawsuits and jail time for some of those involved.

Anyone with any amount of interest in dinosaurs - from casual to deep - should find this book entertaining, and maybe even enlightening. For the pictures alone, it's a steal.

5 out of 5 stars can't believe it's OP--check it out at the library!.......2000-04-25

This is a wonderful book for amateur paleontologists and those who just like dinosaurs. The authors visit all the famous locales, where the big finds were made (you know the names--the Badlands, Mongolia), and talk to those who are currently working in the field. You learn some of the interesting stories from behind the scenes. Beautifully photographed as well. Accompanied by the skull of Edward Drinker Cope ("the Man" when it comes to North american paleontologists, along with his nemesis, O.C. Marsh), this is the ultimate dinosaur roadtrip. Maybe it will come back into print soon, with the ever present interest and appetite for dinosaurs and dinosauria.

Librarians--while this was published as an adult book, Amazon's suggestion of YA is right on--glossy photos, some irreverant humour, nice layout with just enough white space, and a subject that is always in demand somewhere make it just right for a YA non fiction collection.

4 out of 5 stars This book is exceptionally informative and beautiful!.......1999-01-07

I enjoyed the informative, humorous writing and beautiful photography of this book so much that I have included it in my course designed for teachers. Good work, authors!

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous artwork of modern and Ice Age animals.......2001-03-08

Dutch illustrator Rien Poortvliet has done an outstanding job with this work, depicting in a series of illustrations the modern and Ice Age wildlife of the Netherlands. Beginning in the present with deer and rabbits seen from his treestand, he goes further and further back in time, showing more and more exotic wildlife. Soon he shows pheasants, partrides, foxes, deer, and wild boars, as well as bringing us to early modern and medieval Holland. Eventually the work progresses all the way back to the Pleistocene, with wonderful illustrations of early man and such long vanished animals as Irish elk, woolly rhinos, and his crowning acheivement, the woolly mammoth.

Though the modern animals are well depicted, the main reason to buy this lavishly illustrated book are for its Ice Age fauna. In addition to extinct mammals, animals no longer found wild in the Netherlands such as wolves, horses, lions, bears, and elk are well covered as well.

This book is again extremely beautiful; many of the paintings have a very haunting quality. The way he takes you back in time really shows a unity of theme and makes the Ice Age fauna that much more real, showing they were as natural a part of the landscape as trees or rabbits, and look all the more real for being depicted in landscape still around today.

The book is not only on wildlife and landscape, as he shows a great deal of the life of peasants, farmers, fishermen, hunters, and eventually primitive early Man in Holland. He shows the building of ancient burial mounds, the dolmens. Poortvliet takes you on an Ice Age hunt for reindeer, then back to the village to show how the skins were prepared for clothing. He richly depicts a medieval hunt, complete with peasant drivers pressed into service, magnificent hounds, and the deadly last stand of the wild boar that was often the subject of the great hunt. A good number of pages are depicted to the interaction of wolves and humans in the Netherlands, showing wolf attacks and the campaign to wipe them out in response.

Sorry if I ramble in this review but there is just so much to take in with this magnificent work, it is like a concentrated blast of Dutch natural and human history, rich with wonderfully depicted landscapes, wildlife, human interest, and magnificent Ice Age fauna. Truly a rare book. A great book to get lost in, a great coffee table book, just a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into the natural history of early Europe.......1997-07-08

Rien Poortvliet's Journey Into the Ice Age offers an excellent and illustrative insight into the natural history of Europe. He begins the story from his modern-day perch built into a tree for the purposes of viewing wildlife in their most relaxed state, and continues as a virtual daydream which illustrates to the reader with both personal reflection and visual images how the wildlife of earlier days may have appeared had he been in the same perch hundreds or thousands of years ago. His illustrations are very detailed and anatomically perfect, and his handwritten notes add a very personal touch to this aesthetically as well as literally pleasing work of art. I enjoy reading the book to my children and leave it on the coffee table for guests to thumb through as well. I will definitely seek other titles from this author

Book Description

Writing in a conversational style for the lay person -- without forsaking science -- the author embarks on a world-wide hunt for the largest predatory fish and most fearsome shark ever to inhabit our global seas. After 62 million years, the fossil record for this 60-foot aqua-motive known as C. megalodon abruptly ends.

In part, this is a color-illustrated guide book that pinpoints where to search for Meg teeth and other shark fossils in Florida and elsewhere, as well as how to identify the various species. It is also meant to invite lively discussions about how such a menacing predator became extinct, or whether it is still lurking deep below the ocean's surface. Additionally, the book is a rallying cry for treating today's sharks (as well as all life forms) with as much respect as we ourselves would want to be treated.

This was a poor book that seemed like it was not even useful. The book was not that informational, only in a few parts.I do not reccomend this book to anybody!

5 out of 5 stars Meg...BIG AND BAD.......2004-05-12

...yup, read this before you go to the beach...
A very informative read about nature's most dangerous predator of the sea. Includes evidence of the Meg still existing today out there, lots of photos, a comparison between other notorious extinct predators, and tons of gripping facts.

5 out of 5 stars "Megladon" Enlightens in a Big Way.......2003-09-30

I have had the opportunity to hunt with Mark on several occasions in Florida and found him to be a wealth of knowlege regarding fossils. He has taken the time to put much of this knowlege into the framework of an educational and enlightening text. The book "Megladon" brings his casual, conversational approach to fascinating levels for interested readers. As a graduate from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, I found this book to be delightful to read, informative in it's scope, and very thorough in it's coverage of this large predator. The photographic documentation was awesome, and the additional information regarding various other fossil forms was an added bonus. This book is a "must" for the serious collector. I enjoyed "Fossiling in Florida" very much, but "Megladon" tops my list!

5 out of 5 stars MEGA Praise for this Megalodon Book.......2003-09-24

Having successfully used Mark Renz's first book- Fossiling in Florida- as a guide to finding some awesome fossils buried within Florida's abundant rivers, I decided to give his second book a try. Megalodon: Hunting the Hunter exceeded my expectations. Renz's imaginative writing style brings to life a creature that became extinct millions of years ago. This reader-friendly account, which cuts through all the academic jargon without sacrificing scientific detail, chronicles the emergence and disappearance of this giant species of shark. As an added bonus, the reader is introduced to Megalodon's relatives and other ancient sharks. Full of interesting facts and color photos, this book will appeal to fossil enthusiasts of all ages and levels of expertise. There are over 390 illustrations and photos (including Meg's dentition) -- a gold mine for fossil hunters who need help identifying their finds. Renz also lists at least 50 sites around the world open to intrepid fossil hunters. A reference section lists fossil clubs, related websites, and museums. Young readers should especially enjoy the chapter comparing Meg's ferocity with other prehistoric beasts, like Tyrannosaurus rex.

Megalodon: Hunting the Hunter comes highly recommended by renowned paleontologists and "Meg" experts. Believe me, this is one book that won't sit on your shelf collecting dust!

I enjoyed the way the book presented ideas about the Ice Age and its inhabitants in a cartoon format. However, I was looking for a book that was appropraite for 1st graders to read independently this would be a little above them. I think 2nd and 3rd graders would enjoy this book and be able to understand the humor.

              Book Description

Developing countries are under enormous pressure to produce more food for their growing populations, conserve natural resources, and reduce poverty. In the short term, however, these objectives may compete with one another.

This book focuses in particular on the interactions between agricultural growth and environment and between environment and poverty. The chapters analyze and illustrate these interactions with case study evidence from the developing world in general and from specific agroclimatic zones in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The contributors also discuss the implications of these links for development policies, agricultural technologies, and social and economic institutions. With a clearer picture of how these goals interact, policymakers and researchers can design strategies for working more effectively to meet them.
