Book Description
This definitive biography of a Hollywood icon portrays Gary Cooper as a man of complex and sophisticated tastes, as well as large appetites.
Customer Reviews:
Nope.......2005-11-28
This is a unimpressive and down-right sloppy book on one of the movies' greatest stars and actors. How could you write a blah book on Gary Cooper? The author seems to recycle too much "information" from previous books on Cooper or other stars, and is most outrageous in his passing on the lurid gossip from Jane Ellen Wayne's trashy fantasy COOPER'S WOMEN. Does Meyers REALLY believe Clara Bow in the 1930's talked to a "shocked but riveted public" about Cooper's penis size and sexual ability?? Where the heck does he believe such an interview would have been published in the 1930's!!! He further illustrates his lack of second-sourcing his information in the very same paragraph by claiming Cooper didn't have to worry about "knocking her up" since Bow couldn't have children - apparently quite oblivious to the fact that Bow gave birth to two sons several years after the Cooper affair in her marriage to actor Rex Bell!!!! The book concludes with Meyers listing Cooper's films as "best films", "important", "seeable" and a surprisingly large "poor" list including some popular favorites like IF I HAD A MILLION, THE PLAINSMAN, SOULS AT SEA, NORTHWEST MOUNTED POLICE, and CASANOVA BROWN. At least we know THESE are original opinions! Of note the back cover includes a very favorable comment on the book by Bill Clinton. Bill dude, you must have inhaled this time!!!
A simple-minded effort.......1998-08-24
There's nothing new here. Old facts, little analysis, a boring narrative. More of a fan magazine profile than an in-depth biography. Very poorly done.
THE RELUCTANT STAR AND HERO.......1998-07-15
Though still seen today on cable Gary Cooper's movies only tell part of the story. A man that never said 2 words when one would do or even one when a look would do. The book helps us all to understand this Legend of the screen better. Little known facts about his childhood and extensive education are revealed. Proving that images of silence often conceal greater intelligence than the ramblings of the self absorbed.
Book Description
This is the lavishly illustrated, definitive account of The Phantom of the Opera, tracing the Phantom legend from its origins in historical fact through Gaston Leroux's heartrending classic novel and other artistic incarnations to the present day and Andrew Lloyd Webber's incredibly successful musical.

Beautiful.......2007-01-10
Loads of beautiful photos and lots of info. I love it. We do need and expanded edition to cover the movie. This is for Phantom Fans.
A very good book!!!.......2006-08-10
This a must have for any phans of the A.L.W. musical!!
Clearly, my dears, this IS the book for you........2006-01-11
This book... I have no words on how amazing it is.
When I rekindled my love for musicals, and of course, Phantom of the Opera made that happened... I had to get everything and learn everything about Phantom. So I found this book at the library and I went insane over it.
Firstly, it gives a clear background history on Gaston Leroux--the writer and the creator of Phantom of the Opera. Then, it goes into another section when talking about the films it inspired. You'll be surprised and amazed when you see it and read about it. Not only that, it tells you some small tidbit facts on the actors and actresses of these movies.
And then, my favorite part, it goes into the Lloyd Webber musical. And when I say "goes into" I mean it!! There are so many pictures of the Original London Cast it's phenominal! There ares ome behind the scenes pictures as well. I never seen so many pictures about Phantom sure in a book, ever.
And when you think that's enough, there is a libretto of the stage production--including scrafito'ed pictures of the OLC copied in there as it was when the CD/Cassette first made it's debut.
All in all, it's not clearly updated as it is now, there is mention of the movie and who they want in it. But otherwise, if you are a London Cast or simply a Phantom obsessionist, you MUST have this book. If you find it at a house sale, a junk pile, book sale... whatever... BUY IT. You will not be dissapointed!!
An absolute MUST to buy!!.......2005-02-02
I recently purchased both 'The Complete Phantom of the Opera'and the novel, and I am soo impressed! After I saw the movie and bought the soundtrack, I knew that I had to have these books. My interst in the Phantom of the Opera was first sparked when I saw the silent version with Lon Cheney. Then I heard about the movie coming out, so I saw it and I was more than impressed. I still have yet to see the Broadway version however. So, I highly recommend the movie, the soundtrack and the books. In my opinion each is well worth the cost!!
everything about the phantom of the opera.......2004-12-27
best, if you this musical, don't miss it

Primary Math Interventions.......2006-11-10
Teaching Children Who Struggle should be required reading for any teacher of young children. Given a specific deficit, there are multiple strategies and instructional procedures that will remedy the issue. Material from Math Recovery is clearly explained and convincingly supported.
Teaching Children Who Struggle with Mathematics.......2004-09-11
Super book! Great practical ideas for this mom and teacher! Both my 9 and 12 year old daughters were struggling to wrap their minds around the division algorithm. I read the chapter on division in the book, bought some base-ten blocks, and held about 8 practice sessions with the girls by following the author's instructions. My 12 year old can now easily complete the division algorithm. My 9 year old can easily divided with the base-ten blocks and is beginning to grasp the algorithm. Yea! This is super progress for them both!

Book Description
World War I conjures up visions of barbed wire, trenches, mud and massive and futile offensives with horrendous casualties. The frustrating stalemate on the western front with its unprecedented casualties provoked a furious debate in London between the civil and military authorities over the best way to defeat Germany. The passions aroused continued to the present day. The mercurial and dynamic David Lloyd George stood at the centre of this controversy throughout the war. His intervention in military questions and determination to redirect strategy put him at odds with the leading soldiers and admirals of his day.
David Woodward, a student of the Great War for some four decades, explores the at times Byzantine atmosphere at Whitehall by exhaustive archival research in official and private papers. The focus is on Lloyd George and his adversaries such as Lord Kitchener, General Sir William Robertson, and Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig. But the result is a fresh, compelling and detailed account of the interaction between civil and military authorities in total war.

Book Description
1849. This volume is comprised of a series of essays whose purpose on one hand is to exhibit a tolerable sketch of the human mind; and, aided by the lights which the poet and orator so amply furnish, to disclose its secret movements, tracing its principal channels of perception and action, as near as possible, to their source: and, on the other hand, from the science of human nature, to ascertain, with greater precision, the radical principles of that art, whose object it is, by the use of language, to operate on the soul of the hearer, in the way of informing, convincing, pleasing, moving, or persuading. The Contents are divided into the following three Books: The Nature and Foundations of Eloquence; The Foundations and Essential Properties of Elocution; and The Discriminating Properties of Elocution.

Benighted view of Hopkins' life........2007-01-25
I just finished this book and found it very poorly researched, particularly in light of recent scholarship and evidence, particularly that which was revealed in the Soviet archives. Hopkins was clearly a traitor. Although many other New Dealers were well meaning but unsophisticated communist enablers, Hopkins clearly understood and was comfortable with his treachery. Like so many of his sycophants, Hopkins was handicapped by complete lack of understanding of economics. He was a well meaning soul driven by a boundless energy to remake the world into a utopian paradise. Unfortunately, that emotion when acted upon by Hopkins and other utopians led directly to the the deaths of 100 million human beings in the last century.
Harry Hopkins - TRAITOR!.......2004-03-15
That Harry Hopkins wielded great influence at the table of FDR no one denies. What is lost in the clatter is the under the table influence he had with Stalin - as his inside man in the Roosevelt administration. Recently uncovered documents from the former USSR leave little doubt that Hopkins was the most valuable spy the Soviets had in the US during WWII - if not ever! Though to be fair, perhaps Hopkins was only following FDR's ("some of my best friends are communists") lead.
That author George McJimsey could be so pitifully disoriented as to call someone like Hopkins a "defender of democracy" is an indictment of the integrity and scholarship of leftist academia. Read this book with a grainery of salt.
Very well-done and well-researched.......1999-11-16
This tells in a definitive way the story of Harry Hopkins, one of the most important and also one of the most unlikely heroes of World War II. This book traces his life from his birth in Sioux City, Iowa, on August 17, 1890, to his death in New York on Jan.29, 1946. Anyone interested in the years when he was prominent should get and read this good book

Some good ideas, but now there are better.......2004-03-05
TQM was a great idea in its time. Now one can see that TQM, like what came before and after it like Excellence and Six Sigma, is just a subset of what really works- Open-Book Management (see the book of the same name by John Case). When TQM, or any similar program, is implemented, in order for it to work, needs to address the other areas of OBM such as financial information and understanding, appropriate responsibilities, and a stake in the rewards.
Fortunately, not only does this book/tape talk about TQM in particular, but it also talks about certain issues involved in implementing any similar type of program.
Not much more than a promo for a specialized analysis proc........1998-07-09
The audio book discusses companies which are successful at using a particular analysis procedure but barely touches on management itself. More of an 'infomercial' as it lacks quality content.
Book Description
A Season in The Big House is an anatomy of a season in college football at a school with a tradition so rich no one season could spoil it. With perspectives from fans, the head coach, and a writer who's written thoughtfully and intimately about the program for four decades, this book offers an unparalleled view of Michigan football.

Customer Reviews:
Understanding the minds of great men.......2003-04-24
For as long as I can remember, I have had an interest in the biographies of great statesmen. I wanted to read about the lives of the men that have changed the world and understand what made them unique, what gave them the ability to be such influential historical figures. But reading about the bare-bones facts of a person's life does not reveal their inner motives; it does not tell the reader what forces drove these men to lead such influential lives. It was not until I read Rintala's book about the friendship between Churchill and Lloyd George that I discovered the missing link: combining psychology with biography. Not only does this book give the reader a fascinating perspective into the relationship between these two men, it tells the reader what forces shaped their personalities. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in understanding the lives of two of the most powerful people of the 20th century. If you think you know the lives of Lloyd George or Winston Churchill by reading other biographies, your understanding of these two men will not be complete until you have read this book.
Really REALLY BAD!!!!!.......2001-12-09
Not only is this the most boring book on the market but it is absolutely ridiculous. Historical facts are completely incorrect,(...)Worst of all, the grammar and vocabulary used in the book are just plain aweful. I have no idea how this book ever got published. Please go get your eyebrows waxed before reading this sad, painful garbage.
Terrible.......1999-05-11
I have to agree with the other two reviewers. This is one of the silliest books that I have ever read. The grammar and syntax in this book are lamentable and it is extremely boring. This truly is some of the worst writing I've ever read. My advice is to run from any book that this man has the audacity to publish. Hardly a scholar and nowhere near being a writer, this author should truly give up!!
Tedious and Ridiculous.......1999-05-10
As a professor of political science at Columbia University it is shocking to see that such a terribly written and outrageous theory could be published. This book is a disgrace to the field and should be noted as the most aweful piece of writing I have ever had the displeasure to read. The author believes himself infallible and is clearly suffering from delusions if he could seriously consider this as a serious piece of academic literature. Overall, the worst historical interpretation ever written.
A horrendous historical distortion........1999-04-23
This book was a terrible compolation of ridiculous fact and capricious opinion. The author, clearly a pompous man, makes enormously random and unfounded claims. His theories are ignorant and foolish, accompanied by tedious and gramatically poor writing. Truly an atrocious piece of writing.
