3 out of 5 stars Up and downs of Descalzi.......2001-10-23

I bought this book out of curiosity after hearing and learning that Guillermo Descalzi was living as a homeless person in Washington DC, but unfortunately this book is more about Guillermo's carreer as a TV Journalist, the world events he covered while working for SIN and Telemundo and his personal view about where God should be in our life. I did not particular enjoy the last section of the book where he goes into an extensive explanation of the relationship between God and Man and the way how he feels a person should live in relation to God.

I was hoping to get more of an insight of his experiences while he was living as a drug addict and homeless person and how he was able to overcome his addiction.

This book is Okay if you are interested in learning the world events and the person Descalsi interviewed and his personal opinion about religion.

5 out of 5 stars El Principe de los Mendigos.......2000-05-23

El Principe de los Mendios (Prince of Paupers)is really like two stories. Imagine "Fisher King" meets "Broadcast News". This is the true-life memoris of Guillermo Descalzi. This story appeals to those that wish to know the behind the scenes story of world events. This story appeals to those that wish to know more about drug addiction, alcoholism and the plight of the homeless. This story appeals to those that wish to know how better to survive ones own demonds. This story appeals to those that wish help in finding happiness within themselves. Descalzi is the gracious host of Telemundo's Spanish TV newsmagazine show "Ocurrio Asi". His autobiographical story is one of trials, tributes, tribulations and ulitmat redemption. For many years he was a top rated TV journalist traveling the world and interviewing presidents, dictators, terrorists and victims of disaster. His fall from grace due to drugs, alcoholism, and depression eventually landed him on the tough streets of Washington DC, as a panhandler for almost two year. Like the Prodigal Son, he has triumphantly returned to us at last. We are most greatful for knowing him better through his book. I cant wait for it to be published in English, so that I may share it with my American friends.

5 out of 5 stars El Principe de los Mendigos.......2000-04-02

Since meeting Guillermo in 1987, I've been his hairdresser, spent time with him in coffee shops and low key bars -- known for their ambiance. Not a single meeting took place without discussions of mind-blowing intensity. It was as if, so consumed were we in our quest, that we would self-destruct -- in our effort to remain true, committed to the fight and free of hypocrasy.

He covered the Gulf War and broke protocol by crossing over into "no-man's land" where he encountered thousands upon thousands of Iraqi's - mostly women and children fleeing the bombing. The effect of this left him totally shattered; unable to function - not only as an objective journalist; but a man in control of his emotions. He ended up as a drunkard, marijuana and cocaine addict -- living in squalour on the streets of Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant, Washington, DC.

Even for that lifestyle; he still had it in him - the wherewithal to take care of some of his less capable comrades; even to the point of raising money to give one of them a decent burial; thus his arriving late for his scheduled interview with 60 Minutes.

He has since -- with the undying support of Enrique Gratas and others, turned his life around and is back in broadcast television conducting his own show Occurro Asi on Telemundo. This week, March 30, 2000 (last night) Guillermo retured to Washington, DC to promote his memoirs - El Principe de los Mendigos -- The Prince of the Beggars/street-people. I have never seen so many people attend a book reading at any bookstore before. Apparently 250 books were ordered and well over three hundred were called for . . . So many people felt cheated -- but not by Guillermo's captivating story-telling elloquence . . .

(When I asked him at the bookreading if he had mentioned that meeting with 60 Minutes in his book, he sadly reflected that he had not -- for it was uinlike any interview they had ever attempted to conduct before. He showed them up for the ratings hungry hypocrtical wolves they made themselves out to be; ultimately refusing them the interview . . .)

5 out of 5 stars EL GRAN VALOR DE COMPARTIR UNA GRAN LECCION!.......2000-03-12

FELICITACIONES GUILLERMO! Y a seguir adelante!

                  Book Description

Maud Gonne is part of Irish history: her founding of the Daughters of Ireland, in 1900, was the key that effectively opened the door of twentieth-century politics to Irish women. Still remembered in Ireland for the inspiring public speeches she made on behalf of the suffering—those evicted from their homes in western Ireland, the Treason-Felony prisoners on the Isle of Wright, indeed all those whom she saw as victims of imperialism—she is known, too, within and outside Ireland as the woman W. B. Yeats loved and celebrated in his poems.

Before I read this book, all I knew of Maud Gonne was what Yeats had seen fit to tell us. And that's just not very nice, is it? This well-balanced and evocative portrait is not afraid to honestly depict the great lady's weaknesses, but it also gives us her strengths and the story of the incredibly valuable work she did for Ireland - not just for the abstraction of Eire, but gritty, real work that was to the direct benefit of children and prisioners.

I've read many times the celtic tales written by historians or history teachers. However, i've never read those tales in such touching and heartwarming way. Ella Young loved her land, and it notices. From the creation of the world, to the arrival of christianity to Ireland, these celtic tales are lovely to hear and to read. I've read the spanish version (a translation), and even when i know that in the translations some of the original spirit is lost, this doesn't occur with Celtic Wonder Tales. The writing is so simple, direct and beautiful, that the only complaint i could have is that the book is too short. I'd loved a longer book, including more and more legends, in Ella's precious style.

Maud Gonne and William Butler Yeats met in early 1889, and he first proposed to her--unsuccessfully--two years later. Some of Yeats's greatest poems chronicle his long obsession with her, among them "A Woman Homer Sang," "Reconciliation," and "No Second Troy":

What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

We tend to see Maud Gonne through his prism--a firebrand, a great beauty, above all a political fanatic who made him suffer like mad. These letters tell a more complex tale, since the majority are hers, most of Yeats's having been destroyed. What he portrayed as extremism instead becomes deep political involvement: her letters record an endless round of meetings, protests, and good works. In addition, the concern she again and again manifests for Yeats mitigates his cries of indifference; rather, Maud Gonne emerges as steady and heroic. Even as she was preparing to marry John MacBride, she took time out to console her longtime suitor in a characteristic run-on: "Friend of mine au revoir. I shall go over to Ireland in a couple of months, if you care to see me I shall be so glad & you will find I think that I am just the same woman you have always known, marriage won't change me I think at all...." The editors declare the original letter "very crumpled and creased as if carried in Yeats's pocket and taken out and read many times."

                    5 out of 5 stars A feminist and a poet.......2002-09-25

First off, let me tell you I love reading letters so this book has definite appeal to me. And of course, Yeats was Yeats and Gonne, as you may or may not know, was a famous feminist in Ireland. That the relationship continued for so many years despite her contunual refusals to marry him says olumes about the personalities of these two people.
If you're interested in what made Yeats tick or how a feminist conducted herself without major media support, read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Letters of love, passion and politics.......2001-10-18

This is a wonderful volume. The love of Yeats for Maud Gonne is one of the defining characteristics of his life and the passion he felt for her powered some of his strongest poems. Reading these letters you get a marvellous feel for the strength of the woman and her respect and love for the poet, despite turning down many marriage proposals.

Maud Gonne was much more than the woman beloved of Yeats, she was also a political activist, a woman convinced of the need for Irish nationalism and prepared to work for the benefit of the Irish people. This comes through in her letters to Yeats through her mention of meetings and rallies.

I can almost forgive her destruction of almost all the letters she received from Yeats, which explains the one sided nature of this volume, almost all the letters are from Gonne to Yeats with only a few from him to her.

This volume is a superb addition to the library of anyone who enjoys Yeats. It is also gives a remarkable understanding of Maud Gonne, a major element in the Irish history of the early 20th century. It loses a star because of the shortage of Yeats letters.

These four remarkable women, core members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, left a lasting imprint on the politics, literature, and theater of 19th-century Europe. Less well-known than the famous men in their lives, including Yeats and Shaw, their stories are now told.

This was a well-written and entertaining book. I have read other books which gave information on each of these five women, but this was the first which gave such great information on their occult lives. I was impressed by the historical research done on these impressive women. O! To have lived in London,Dublin and Paris during those times.Florence Farr seemed to me to be especially appealing; intelligent, talented and brave at same time. Ms. Greer has written a work to be proud of. It actually caused me to learn the Tarot.

5 out of 5 stars extensively researched book brings characters to life!.......2004-02-01

This well written and extensively researched book gave me great insight into the Women of the Golden Dawn. One gets very accustomed to reading only about the male Golden Dawn figures such as Aleister Crowley and Samuel MacGregor Mathers. Finally, a book about the women and what interesting lives they led!
I liked the way Mary Greer divided the 4 featured women into different archetypes, thus explaining the different roles they had within the Golden Dawn. It also gives contemporary women role models and a deeper understanding of our own psyches.
The book was a fascinating read into these women's lives, what they accomplished and how powerful they truly were during the Victorian era!

                    5 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2001-07-20

The role of the women who were involved in the Birth and Death of the Order has largely been overlooked.

It is highly recommendable if you would like a differing view of the rise and fall of the Order; it is an interesting combination of romance, drama, gossip, and historical information (Although I cannot attest to its accuracy). You are exposed to the flaws of the founders, and their weaknesses. While some of the interaction between members could come right out of Jerry Springer, it is still highly commendable.

I must admit I had a difficult time putting this book down.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining and scholarly book.......1999-04-08

Women of the Golden Dawn addresses a subject that is rarely touched on in other books on the Occult Revival: the role of the women in this movement. Mary K. Greer weaves a tapestry of astrology, tarot, metaphysics, biography, and history. The book elucidates many magickal principles as skillfully as it recounts the story of four uncommon women. The extensive endnotes are especially intriguing; tarot readers will be very interested at the in-depth records of Golden Dawn tarot readings and interpretations.

5 out of 5 stars Good for fans of magic and the Golden Dawn.......1998-08-07

The Golden Dawn magical order was founded in 1888. Although it admitted women, they have been often overlooked in histories of the GD.Mary Greer redresses this oversight. The four women in question are Annie Horniman, actress and writer Florence Farr, freedom fighter for Ireland Maud Gonne and the mystical Moina Bergson Mathers.Greer claims that these women were the true heart and soul of the Golden Dawn, and it is hard not to agree with her. Each woman had exceptional talents, and each made her own unique contribution to this magical Order.Much research has gone into this book and it is packed with information not easily found on the subjects.Interesting details of some of the magical workings are given, including some by Maud Gonne and W.B.Yeats.The personal relationships, the bickering, the magic--it's all here.

I purchased this book after having heard Kathleen Rockwell Lawrence reading excerpts from it in a coffeehouse in Hoboken, just after it was published in 1986. This "Catholic-girl coming of age and subsequently dealing with her life" story is written with wit and elegance, and was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. I have heard nothing about subsequent works by Ms. Lawrence in the quarter-century since, but I hope she is still writing. To judge from this delightful, yet poignant, debut, she is a writer who deserves to be more widely known.
